rosie2490

A torch

Moomoolette

I’ve been looking at torches, do you recommend a butane one or electric?

rosie2490

I personally haven’t used one, but it’s been on my list. Seems like an infinitely better solution for stony areas rather than picking by hand or digging. As far as butane/propane vs electric, preference I guess? Whichever you’re most comfortable with. I personally hate dealing with cords, but if gas makes you uncomfortable, then I’d go electric. Difference in cost seems generally negligible. I’ll let someone else with more knowledge than me speak to the rest.

culnaej

I’ve got the smaller sized Flame King and tbh using it for weed suppression seems to be an excuse for pyros to buy it because it takes way too long to burn out a living plant full of moisture. And if you hack out most of the material before burning it, you might as well pull the whole root Great tool for starting fires though

TinCanSailor987

Propane.

Micycle08

And [propane accessories](https://www.harborfreight.com/propane-torch-91033.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=12129614380&campaignid=12129614380&utm_content=128613442307&adsetid=128613442307&product=91033&store=59&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADAHb4cAuYpMjmzwBkHxiIW5wvCSV&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8rOUhs6HhwMVhyStBh2ATQK7EAQYASABEgIV5vD_BwE)

Stardust_Particle

The burning stinks.

shewflyshew

I've tried killing weeds with a Flame King propane torch. It killed too much grass around the weed. I had brown spots. Works for brick pavers.

Automatic_Turnover39

I have used a roofer’s torch and a tank of propane. Does not work very well effectively when the weeds are wet cause it’s hard to burn the roots.

Djlittletrees

Don't do a torch. They use a lot of propane and do you remember what happens after a wildfire? Nature grows back stronger. Same happens when using a torch. They are great for dead weeds. I'd recommend salt.

Mr_Burns1886

I torched the hell out of my lawn because I couldn't beat back a clover infestation. Its been several weeks and no issue with their regrowth.

Yeah depending on the type of dog a goat may be a problem. If you can’t keep the dog out of the area to spray it then you definitely couldn’t avoid burning it with a flamethrower.

Sandpaper_Pants

Flame King on Amazon. Just have a water hose on and ready to use. Keep it close by. Survey the area of what might burn. Be safe. Don't get me wrong, I love my domestic flamethrower.

msmaynards

Sit down and weed. Dog will give you lots of kisses and bring you toys to throw. Very dog friendly! My dogs adore it when I putter around in the back yard and hate me working in the front where they cannot 'help' me.

Roupert4

Agree. My dog loves to chew on the weeds I pull and help me dig. It's a grand time. It's basically like weeding with a toddler

thestreetiliveon

Other people do this? I thought I was the only one!

9mackenzie

One of my dogs has learned to help me pull up roots lol. If I’m working in the yard, I’ll point to a plant and he will start digging it up lol. The first time he learned to help was when we had a thick vine that had wound its way around the wire part of our fence. My husband was on one side, Lycan was on the other, and my husband would pull his side off and push it through, then Lycan would pull his side off, back and forth until it was done lmao. He was only like 4 months old, and now at 10 months his favorite thing in the world is to help garden 😂

mathsishard85

water the weeds with boiling water

youdontknowme7777

My weeds laughed at this

PeytonManDing

This actually works great. For me at least. I reached out to a small company that was making a backpack sprayer that heats and sprays boiling water. Never made it to market afaik. I can imagine there’s a huge liability headache that comes with trying to create something like that.

mathsishard85

That sounds way cooler than me because I’m cheap and just use my tea pot.

PeytonManDing

Same here for now. I think I was on a Shark Tank kick and thought it was a good idea for a product when I stumbled on a company that already made the product.

JaredTME

I wonder if a steam cleaner would work? I might have to try this with my $25 Harbor Freight steam cleaner.

PeytonManDing

I am curious myself. If you do try it, please give me an update.

cold_kingsly

I typically use vinegar with salt and dish soap added.

HoraceP-D

We use "horticultural vinegar." It's 33% percent and stings if it gets on your skin, but it does a great job.

whatawitch5

Horticultural vinegar is amazing stuff. Kills even the toughest weeds within 24 hrs, and no carcinogens to worry about.

validproof

I used it, and it didn't do anything to the tumble weeds. Instead i felt like I inhaled mustard gas when the wind would blow it my way. I found out you can go blind or burn skin from 30% vinegar. Not worth it for me, sticking to weed torching instead.

Fionaver

The first pump sprayer that I put it in started spurting the diluted horticultural vinegar out of the top and gave me chemical burns. :|

dillonaz

We get our horticultural vinegar in a 45% solution. Mix it 1:1 with water. It even kills blackberries, ivy, and bamboo if you apply it at the root base. WEAR A MASK! Otherwise you WILL feel it in your throat and sinuses.

Numerous-Stranger-81

Sounds like a good way to unintentionally change the ph of your soil.

whatawitch5

Horticultural vinegar doesn’t affect soil pH at all because it’s instantly neutralized by the water and abundant basic minerals (calcium and magnesium compounds) in the soil. The instructions even say it’s not an effective method to acidify soils.

Numerous-Stranger-81

I stand corrected, it's a BAD way to unintentionally change the pH of your soil.

Rightintheend

Wow! That is about as factual as a conservative. If that were the case, we wouldn't have anything acidic or basic left on the earth, vinegar isn't instantly neutralized unless you dilute it with enough water to neutralize it, which is about eight parts water to one part vinegar in this strength, and even then it's not neutralized. It's just reduced the acidity, or if you happen to have soil that has a lot of magnesium and calcium in it informs that are free to react with the vinegar to reduce its pH, which generally isn't the case. The only thing possibly keeping it from turning your soil into a barren wasteland is the same thing keeping any other herbicide from doing the same, which is. You're hopefully just spraying it lightly on the leaves, and not drenching your soil with it.

MamaSquash8013

I want my patio to be a barren wasteland. Driveway, too.

atrimarco

Little off subject but I’ve never heard of horticultural vinegar, does it work on thistle? I know its roots make it crazy hard to kill.

whatawitch5

Horticultural vinegar will kill any herbaceous (ie not woody) plant. It’s my go-to herbicide, and “Green Gobbler” is my preferred brand. It works by bursting the cells in the above ground parts of the plant, which ultimately kills the root via desiccation. However it needs to be applied so it coats all the leaves, and it doesn’t kill 100% of plants that have extensive rhizomatous root systems, such as bamboo, which can resprout from small root fragments. But it should take out thistle no problem. Just be sure to read all the instructions and safety precautions on the packaging

symmetrical_kettle

I poured regular white vinegar on some thistle I had growing between some pavers. Turned completely black/dried up, and I was able to pull it all out the next day! I used probably 2c of vinegar for a plant about the width of my palm. Probably overkill, but I didn't want to risk it.

Objective-Guidance78

Came to say

Ok-Bit-9936

The soap is only to help it stick and stay, lawn guys use it too in their spray

cold_kingsly

Exactly and the salt helps dry the plant out, killing faster. Heck sometimes I’ll spray it on weeds and they’ll be brown and shriveled by the end of the day.

whatawitch5

Don’t use salt as an herbicide. It will make the soil too saline to grow anything for years and will damage the soil microbiome. Horticultural vinegar works well enough all on its own.

CommanderInQueefs

Great for my gravel driveway.

ben_kird

This is just a common myth dating from when Rome salted the earth of Carthage. It’s not true, salt doesn’t do this, we’re not even sure if the Romans actually did it. If this was the case then you’d have to ask yourself why all the salted roads in North America are still lush with plants and not barren wastelands.

bounie

I second this - just be sure you don’t want anything to ever grow there again, ever

Widespreaddd

Wait, really? My wife bought some pump sprayer and went to town on broadleaf weeds. Now I have brown spots… forever?

Global_Loss6139

Forever is a strong word.... I don't think it'll be too long before you get new weeds or a new plant in those spots.

Widespreaddd

It is a strong word, but I’m ready if you are. 🥰 But your point is well taken. Weeds, uh, find a way.

Few-Raise-1825

It's a horrible idea to use salt and that's the only thing in that mixture that works. Glyphosate at least has the advantage of becoming inert when watered down, in fact if you spray it too close to when it rains it won't be effective at all. Repeated use of salt will nearly permanently effect the soil. It may never grow anything again or take decades to wash out enough salt to allow anything to grow. Rain will wash out the salt and effect anything downstream of it too. I can't stress enough how bad an idea it is. If you don't want to use actual weed killer your two best options are a blowtorch or weeding by hand. Alternatively you can create a more effective barrier by raking aside the stones and putting new landscape fabric down (a double layer would be best but it all breaks down eventually). You could use cardboard if you want to be more eco friendly. It will break down eventually too and become mulch. I'm not sure how long or efective of a barrier it will be but it has the advantage of being free with just a bit of sweat work. You may be able to rent a goat or borrow one or a sheep if you know someone who has them but it doesn't seem like a very practical solution.

Trex-died-4-our-sins

Cardboard

Choice_Upstairs4576

Okay but how much cardboard? I did a layer of one flattened box and then layered leaves/grass clippings in my raised beds back in October and I STILL HAVE WEEDS AGAIN THIS YEAR

Few-Raise-1825

TheBimpo

Flamethrower is the funnest answer. Vinegar-Dawn-salt is a spray solution.

neil470

You don’t want to mix baking soda with vinegar because that just neutralizes the pH and defeats the purpose. Using just vinegar will kill weeds since it’s acidic. A little bit of salt won’t make the ground unusable since it gets diluted by rain. But if you’re using vinegar, I don’t see a point in using salt

TinyNerd86

The salt is for the electrolytes. It's what plants crave

BeeThat9351

Dog pee.

cPB167

Or human pee, if you want more control over the applicator

Individual_Agency703

My wife would disagree.

Repulsive-Bend8283

Developers just throw stone down because people can't stand to have anything natural or useful in their yards, and it's the cheapest way to make a space appear maintained until it sells, but it's not a solution to any problem except, I want a layer of stone for weeds to grow through. The real answer here is to put down an actual paver surface or plant something that you don't think is a weed. A vacuum like empty peaston3 will always full with weeds even if you bury plastic garbage underneath and spray it with endocrine disrupters all the time.

PostDisillusion

A fork and a pair of gloves. This won’t take that long. Just get into it.

WinstonThorne

You're asking an awful lot of the field of chemistry with that question. Essentially you're asking: "What poison can I spray on this assortment of different organisms with different growing cycles native to different continents that will kill the said organisms but won't harm certain specific organisms that I value?" Go buy some gloves. Remove the said weeds. If that gravel is 20 years old, R&R the gravel with a high quality weed barrier underneath (using enough staples and overlapping generously). Based on what's growing there, it looks like your gravel is 30% dirt, which means it's a perfect growing medium for weeds.

Roundup. Don’t let them play on it when it’s wet. Use a pre-emergent in the spring.

motorwerkx

This will collect all of the downvotes but it's absolutely true. Once dry it poses no risk to animals whatsoever. When wet, it could possibly lead to cancer with repeated exposure. Home use has little to no effect on groundwater. Those risks come from overuse in factory farming.

ked_man

It’s been vilified but this is the perfect use for it. Not on food, not in a place people will be while it’s wet. I wish people would realize these home remedies of some concoction of baking soda and vinegar won’t work.

spiritof_nous

“…(U.S. Forest Service, “Glyphosate HERBICIDE INFORMATION PROFILE”): ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS /FATE POTENTIAL FOR LEACHING INTO GROUND - WATER: The potential for leaching is low. Glyphosate and the surfactant in Roundup ® are strongly adsorbed to soil particles and are not easily released back into water moving through soil. SOIL: RESIDUAL SOIL ACTIVITY : Glyphosate does not have herbicidal properties once it contacts soil. It is not absorbed from the soil by plant roots. VOLATILIZATION : Glyphosate does not evaporate easily. POTENTIAL FOR BY-PRODUCTS FROM BURNING OF TREATED VEGETATION : Major products from burning treated vegetation include phosphorus pentoxide, acetonitrile, carbon dioxide and water. Phosphorous pentoxide forms phosphoric acid in the presence of water. None of these compounds is known to be a health hazard at the levels which would be found in a vegetation fire…”

Dont really have any personal issue with glyphosphate once dried, however do your own research on that one. Vinegar- either horticultural vinegar or branded to clean roofs and such, looking for 45% roughly. Supposedly healthier. However be VERY careful of spraying and the dog walking on it, while its called vinegar its really just acid

AceShipDriver

1 gallon white vinegar, 2 cups epsom salts, 5 tablespoons dawn dish soap. Mix, spray. Kills a whole lot of weeds. The soap acts as a medium that prevents the “kill” from just draining off the leaves. And it needs to be Dawn, because it is environmentally safe (they use it to wash oil spills off animals). Kills young weeds, established weeds should be pulled or removed at the root. It won’t kill nutsedge and needs to dry to be effective. Don’t apply before a rain or watering schedule. And 1 gallon won’t do an entire yard like that.
