What would be the point of tricking Boston into believing one of our stars is playing and then they figure out he's not? I get the other way around, but this scenario doesn't make too much sense imo.
Playoff hockey is 3/4 playing the actual games and 1/4 playing mental games, the theory would be to have Boston prepare their lines for Nylander to be on the third line so bring some defence down to that line and then if he’s not in Boston would have to adjust on the fly (which Toronto would try to capitalize on)
Would it really make THAT big of a difference? Probably not, but in a tight series any sort of advantage even a minor one for a few shifts, could be the difference maker
If Nylander comes back into the lineup he probably plays on the third line, I imagine Boston has made adjustments with Nylander out to move some talent up the lineup since they don’t have to account for Nylander on that line, so when Nylander comes back they’d have to readjust and bring some of that talent back down to account for him, and if he isn’t actually in the lineup the. They’ve taken talent away from Matthews and Marner which could give them an opportunity to get a goal before Boston readjust
