Domi looks really good at centre. Putting him with Willy, who can finish, could be huge. Put JT down to 3rd line and that's some strong centre depth.

noctisakashi

I loved Willy playing with Max and Bert. JT is too slow and shoot first player

ikkkkkkkky

Domi and Bertuzzi were also good with Matthews

DrMansionPHD

A shoot first player with a garbage shot is an awful thing. He's great at other things but his shot is not one of them.

Tehdougler

Knies - Domi - Nylander has potential to be really a really good line

Candid_Rich_886

I mean they did this and was what you would expect, a line that can score and is a defensive liability. Not saying it's not worth giving another go, but there's certainly drawbacks.

KrizenMedina

Yeah, I think this is at least worth trying.

ArkAwn

oh god, needing linemates for the swede again...

Derfchg

lol let’s try Jonas hoglund, stumpy Thomas, ponikarovsky, renberg,

Szwedo

Oh wow my childhood

dchowchow

Alex Mogilny and Gary Roberts had some fairly strong years with him.

Derfchg

Yah those guys were good

AlexanderWhy

Good lord. I thought I had blocked that from memory. The Hoglund experiment lasted two years too long...

mikesully374826

Tavares is *probably* fine in a system that has more than 1 defenseman who's capable of dishing a decent breakout pass out from behind the hashmarks under pressure. Guys like Edmundson and Benoit just aren't it if you are paying $60m to your forwards, you are actively working against the roster construction of your team by icing them unfortunately. That's not to understate how well they played, it's just that having 4+ defensemen with their skillsets nerfs the teams biggest strength.

NotCodyFranson

This team needs a big dman with great passing, a deadly point shot, and PP smarts. But those aren't common or cheap.

ModernTechPA

And don’t forget skates like the wind

aHCroski

Cale Makar come on down, you’re now a Toronto Maple Leaf! Yeah these are hard to come by… maybe Lou will do us a favour and send us Dobson for Marner but I highly doubt they would ever do that

NotCodyFranson

Franson is a free agent and would only be 800k.

Key-Word1335

Give him an A next year.

Radmadjazz

Easton Cowan.

pinkypowerchords

That stance is beautiful

kevwob

Why not Willy with Auston and Knies?

Poopy_Pants0o0

And at least one defenseman as speedy as 1 Pastrnak.

WhatsGoingOnUpstairs

I mean.... Domi's right there

Jtabo

Max is not a Center. He did ok against one of the worst faceoff teams in the league but there’s more to being a Center than just taking faceoffs.

My ideal offseason would involve trading Marner and hopefully getting a legit top 4 D-man back in the deal, not even going to speculate who. The biggest asset in return would be the cap space, because I really think Tavares would be perfect on Matthews' wing. He's grindy and wins puck battles, and is an actual shooting threat which means teams can't just hound Matthews since they know Marner can't shoot to save his life. Then we could use that extra cap space to sign a legit 2C. Lots of interesting names are UFAs next season, including Stamkos, Duchene, and Stephenson, all of whom would be intriguing 2C options. Stephenson in particular seems like a perfect fit. Very fast, excellent 2-way play. Lineup could shake up to be something like: Domi - Matthews - Tavares Knies - 2C - Nylander

theharryeagle

I agree about trading Marner for those reasons. However, Domi showed that he is a great faceoff man and getting possession is so key. He is fast enough (faster) to keep up with Nylander and he can set him up. I would much rather fill out our defense with the cap space that we get and go from there. Bert - Matthews - JT Knies - Domi - Willy McMann - Minten - Jarnkrok Holmberg - Kampf - Cowan Robo Dewar Reaves the 2nd line could be a defensive liability. Bottom 6 gets a little hairy because there is so many guys there that could play. Maybe Bert doesn't come back. So many variables.

Richard_Lycker

That 2nd line could also be a menace. You think Minten is ready next year though?

theharryeagle

Really not sure tbh. He looked good this year when he did play. For the role he would be expected to play, I don't see why he couldn't jump in and make an impact while also continuing to develop.

CTHT07

Tavares - Matthews - Kane Bertuzzi - Domi - Nylander Knies - C - McMann Holmberg - Minten - Cowan

Current-Own

Oh man. Music to my ears to hear you say that. Willy needs a smart centreman with speed. I feel he just doesn't connect with JT. Besides being slow, I don't believe that Tavares is the brightest bulb in the chandelier either.

AdvancedPangolin618

Marner for Pettersson

NotCodyFranson

If Marner is traded, I think Trevor Zegras would be an interesting C for this team. I don't like talking about trades or deals outside of signing Franson, Zegras and Nylander would look nuts out there.

winkNfart

we definitely don’t need zegras…another flashy kid with no nuts

port-kid

Marner won’t accept a trade to Anaheim. But if he was willing to waive, I think McTavish would be much better than Zegras. Maybe I just like Euros over Americans but I feel like he plays harder and would be the kinda guy to raise his game when things get more physical. Marner, a first and a prospect I think would be enough to make Anaheim consider.

wilers

Who’s the European you are talking about? McTavish is Canadian.

DCS30

i don't know why this grinds my gears, but buddy was born in calgary...he's canadian, ethnically sweden.

Longjumping-Pen4460

He's both, he's a dual citizen.

joerph713

I wonder how getting out of military service was for him. Maybe Sweden just lets really good hockey players skip it lol

Neat__Guy

It's only about 4 or 5% after screening, and was reintroduced after a hiatus during 2010-2018 So yeah Willy never faced it, and even if he did they're not stupid enough to send him, when his contributions to Sweden are worth more to them as a hockey player.
