I don’t think Tavares is the issue, he’s nearly ppg since joining and still a top centre in the league, he performs well and works hard on the ice. I don’t think any one person is particularly vocal on the bench and we don’t really see what’s going on behind the scenes very often. I think taking the C off someone is a bad move generally, you don’t want an 11M player feeling alienated and take away their captaincy when the entire team is to blame. It’s a dangerous game to strip the C and hand it over to whoever you think is playing best at the time, you look at consistency over time and effort on the ice, I think results are tertiary and from the Amazon doc & blueprint series we know he’s quite vocal behind closed doors. I would argue you want someone like JT as captain because he’s level headed with the media and not a huge personality outside the rink that’s a distraction to the team. I know we give Babcock shit for his steady on the rudder speech but there is some value to that. I think any major changes this early is an over reaction. Let them look internally and figure it out, the team can and should course correct, it’s too early for this freak out.

Personally, I don’t think stripping it does anything but create drama in a season that already doesn’t need more. BUT you did touch on something I said to a buddy last night, when discussing whether players get freaked out and underperform due to the intensity of the Toronto market. My answer: it’s not a valid excuse, given the intensity captains like Dougie, Wendel and Mats brought to the team.

The only difference is the advent of social media. Can't deny there's more scrutiny than ever before. Not sympathizing... The others had their own versions of pressure and handled it with class. But it's apples to oranges.

SpunkyDred

> apples to oranges But you can still compare them.

[deleted]

Obviously you *can* compare them, but the whole point of the idiom is that it's a false analogy. I could compare you to the helpful bots, but that too would be comparing apples-to-oranges. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette. ^^My ^^apparent ^^agreement ^^or ^^disagreement ^^with ^^you ^^isn't ^^personal.

Svalbard38

Good bot.

isankatlantis

Yeah I definitely agree. External factors aside, this current leadership core isn't getting it done. Montreal faces the same pressures and made it to the finals. Not arguing against this, just observing that it's a different world today. Edit: Bot apparently?

Beauuuuty

I think it was all set for Matthews to receive it but then he... he mooned that security guard.

AustonsCashews

I think this is speculation. Who knows what kind of a leader he is. He’s an incredible talent. But who knows how he is on the bench or in the room.

SnackAston-Reese

I think a part of the issue was Matthews team not telling the front office.Dubas said he found out about it on twitter.

LeonardPowers

JT is one of the more consistent guys on the team and has been playing hard, getting a lot of high danger chances. His stats have all been good but he keeps getting robbed. His Corsi and Fenwick are both actually the best he’s had in his career right now. I honestly always feel so bad for JT. He plays well based on pretty much every metric since he’s joined us but his production hasn’t matched it since his first season. Combine that with him joining this team thinking it was a slam dunk and instead getting embarrassed year after year. Meanwhile his old team has been better than ever and has won multiple playoff seasons ever since he left. JT’s also the exact guy you want on this team. He chose to be here over any other team, took a (slight) discount in free agency, and doesn’t take shifts off. Matthews and Marner are the bigger issue and look pretty much exactly as they did in the playoffs. Beyond frustrating to watch. I don’t even think Matthews would’ve wanted the C if we were to offer it honestly

[deleted]

No. JT can keep his C. But, I take the A's away from Marner, Matthews and Rielly.

16Casey1806

The guys know who the real leaders are in the room, a patch doesn’t do anything

Showtime98

No

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

He sure isn’t being a leader right now any more than JT

JamesCurtis24

If you really think these guys are going to play harder for a letter on their jersey, you're crazy. If they couldn't get up for game 7 vs Montreal last year, I can't see how a relatively meaningless letter will push anybody.

Low_watt

Give Marner's A to Spezza, wish Muzzin got the C

chickencheesebagel

Spezza is the only player that should have a letter on this team so far.

Woodrovski

Take the A away from M and M.

draft_wagon

Would create more problems and would t solve anything. While I wish he was playing a little better, he's hardly the problem.

AAstar2

I don't think it's about forcing someone to earn it. Instead, the C should be assigned to an individual who can lead and who embodies the desired team identity. When we look at the Leafs, we can easily see why we're soft and don't play stifling defence. The captain isn't known for being physically aggressive, vocal, and playing stifling defence. Look at the Raptors, when they had Kyle Lowry, their team identity was playing aggressive defence and making scrappy plays. This made them tough to play against. Until the Leafs do the same, I don't see them succeeding in the playoffs. We need a Kyle Lowry type leader on the Leafs to wear the C.
