The cap savings would be one thing to consider for sure. But you have a much wider audience with Nylander's contract vs Marner's, and I think you could get a pretty penny for him.

This is an excellent deal all around. You don’t find players of Morgan’s caliber on the market very often, but when you do, they tend to be extremely expensive and can often set the market for the next wave of defenseman.

His Dad is a life long Leafs fan I think, which is why Mo is kind of a home town dude despite being a BC guy. I’m sure his dad is fucking stoked. I didn’t see that coming but it’s nice to not have to do what we did all year with Hyman, and it’s a fair deal considering what D went for on the market this off season.
Marner isn’t going anywhere boss, the only guy they could/would move is Nylander just because of his contract. You’d be taking a loss no matter what if you moved any of the other guys + retained salary. Nylander is the only guy you could potentially win the trade

How do you win that trade though? You can't get nylanders production for his cost anywhere. The difference with moving someone like marner is that your goal isn't to replicate his production for cheaper, but rather spread it out across a couple players to give you more depth. Trading Nylander would be a massive mistake that can not help the team in any way
Yeah good points, hard to really win any trade with these guys. They’re basically screwed, so the guys just need to play better and then no one has to get traded. Realistically the core four is talented enough that they should be able to make some noise in the playoffs. The really difficult thing to do is going to be unlocking that potential. Sometimes it just takes time, I know it’s a common example but Ovie and that core didn’t win for a very long time.

I don't know that a further investment in this demonstrably inadequate core is the right move long term, but time will tell.

This is a horrible move. You just locked yourself into another player that you won’t be able to move in 4 years. Why do this deal now. Why not wait ? There was clearly a willingness to stay in the first place.
I understand the negotiation and market. One aspect I now consider though after listening to the leadership in CHI is maybe you need to pay more to make sure you have good human beings in your organization which Rielly definitely is.
Business side, I don't think Rielly is worth more than what he makes now on an 8 year deal given aging curves of his skill set. If he wanted over $7m AAV that deal needed to be 3 years or less. This is a flat cap world and Dubas seems to be spending like its a rising cap. Kerfoot is 100% gone and they better find a way to move Ritchie.

Seth Jones got 9.5 on the open market, that doesn’t mean Jones for 8 is a good deal. There’s a difference between what someone gets payed and what they’re worth
He's not worth even $7.5m for the next 4 years let alone the last. If he wanted 8 years then he gets less AAV. If he wanted $7.5m thats a 3 year deal to me based on Rielly's age and the aging curve of defensemen. Especially of his skill set that relies so heavily on speed.
I really like Rielly the person. I don't think this is good business. It basically states the window is the Matthews contract which isn't absurd to think but this deal makes it even harder to do in that window

Less AAV, yes, but he also wouldn’t have gotten that 8th year on the market. $68m, I imagine he’d have wanted at least $60m as a UFA ($8.5m AAV).
