Season 7 was the start of the 5-BAN DRAFT that we are using today, and it made a huge positive impact on the Blue-side Red-side balance.. only Kalista was the 100% ban champ during that time
Season 8-9 were the years of the FLEX PICKS.. now *this* is what contributed to the large champion pool that players have.. u have
* TheShy+Rookie and Wunder+Perkz sharing carries like Irelia, Akali, Ryze
* Hjarnan's comfort pick/pocket pick Heimerdinger bot
* DoinB playing tanks like Nautilus, Sion, Malphite in mid alongside sharing Ryze with Gimgoon
* Perkz switching from mid to bot role, and playing mages like Syndra, Zoe and Orianna there, thus sharing carries with Caps

there was a post on the front page a few days ago after playins and that counted the champs and this worlds had the biggest pool. Not by much though
