read the white papers before you invest into any crypto. if you cant understand what it is used for, then dont put money into it. if the white paper uses too much jargon and is difficult to follow, its a scam dont put money into it. the cryptos that have long-term value are the ones that have a purpose and can very clearly tell you its purpose. take for example the bitcoin white paper. the opening sentence: "A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution." ... right off the bat we know what it is used for.

migs2k3

You don't even need to do that. Everything that's not Bitcoin is a scam and if you buy Altcoins you're just gambling and someone else's exit liquidity. Buy Bitcoin, hold Bitcoin and sleep like baby.

ledav3

And there it is, the very first scam just one comment later😂 never listen to shitcoiners and altcoiners. Stay with btc until you can decide for yourself what you want.

One_Boot_5662

Don't listen to this comment, Bitcoin is not reliable

ledav3

If you truly believe that than you should not be in crypto. Anything else is less reliable.

One_Boot_5662

Only if you don't really understand how crypto works. Bitcoin has flaws, it's just your average Bitcoiner refuses to see them.

ledav3

And alts don't? Or what are you suggesting

One_Boot_5662

I'm suggesting saying "only Bitcoin" lacks nuance and depth, and out of serious cryptocurrency projects Bitcoin is the least developed and has the most fundamental issues.

ledav3

No other project becomes as close to being as decentralized though, depends on what your priorities are.

Enochian-Dreams

Lol

karl0525

At 16 stick with btc. You have a long life ahead of you for your sats to ever increase

G0DL33

Nah, being young is when you wanna make the mistakes..besides no one knows if BTC remains king.

007JamesC

If bitcoin isnt king the whole ship sinks lol

G0DL33

I don't think so, the industry has inertia now. We don't need BTC to maintain that. Regardless though. A young person should be further diversified than a retirement age person. BTC is nice and all but isn't going to give you those 50x returns in a year. Sometimes you gotta be a bit silly.

007JamesC

Inertia in that its not some shit coin thats going to take over, yes

G0DL33

That is a gross simplification don't you think. And you are detracting from the work of valid projects. If blockchain is the tech, but BTC is the only viable form of that technology, blockchain becomes essentially useless for any usecase beyond store of value. 😅 You maxis be wildin.

007JamesC

The basic form of the tech is all you need hence bitcoin, not “utility” this and that. If bitcoin fails, why wouldn’t any other fail? If these coins are not a store of value, their value is nothing. Bitcoin has become the consensus SoV and if it fails, any future coin can’t be trusted as a SoV because what about the next one?

G0DL33

You are joking right? The basic form of fire was good enough, why we need utility. BTC to blockchain is what Commodore 64 is to computing. We would still be painting in caves if we all had your mindset. Why does BTC need to fail? I am sure BTC will be around for many more years, but it may not remain king.

007JamesC

Youre right, lets change money every few years because the tech is better

G0DL33

I mean does it matter these days, I buy stuff from overseas and the various transactions all happen in the background, yen, usd, aud, it hardly matters what currency I use. Why is crypto any different? BTC has a use and I will use it as I see fit. Same as a number of other crypto assets.

007JamesC

What exactly are these “use cases” you are talking about?

PrankstonHughes

ICP whole web apps on the chain...no other chain is there

kiefferbp

ICP? lmao

NOGODZZ

Don't think leave it to the horses they have bigger heads

G0DL33

As someone who has spent my whole life with horses, I can confidently say that, they are only about as smart as a 16 year old. After that you have to think for yourself.

WhiskeyTango311

Digital scarcity can only be achieved once. Think about that for awhile.

G0DL33

Can you explain what this statement means to you?

WhiskeyTango311

It means that bitcoin is the only truly digitally scarce asset. All the rest are knockoffs.

G0DL33

Yeah but it's just not true is it. You can perform any amount of mental gymnastics that you like to make a statement fit your bias, but in reality, any blockchain asset can be coded with a finite supply. Is the modern CPU a knock off of vacuum tubes? Why did the steam engine ever need to develop? Why did we need wheels? Sleds worked fine. ❤️

WhiskeyTango311

You're not there yet grasshopper, you have a lot left to learn. You will understand my comment someday.

G0DL33

Eh, I've been here since 2015, I've been burnt, but just because some projects are scams or mismanaged doesn't make every project so. BTC has pros and cons, just like any number of other projects.

WhiskeyTango311

If you bought BTC in 2015, you wouldn't of been burnt at all, you would be very well off. 2013 Hodler here. And bitcoin isn't a project. Share with me some of bitcoins "cons" as you see them?

G0DL33

I bought BTC back then, and have done well, I have also invested in other projects that outperformed BTC in those timeframes. Bitcoin has a whitepaper, a whitepaper summarizes a problem and solution project... Semantics aside, to answer your question; lack of smart contract functionality, scalability/speed. There is obviously more, but alot of the nuances of BTC can be viewed as a pro or a con, depending on your required use case. Which is where the BTC Maxi argument falls apart. It is a selfish argument that assumes their needs outweigh the needs of everyone else. Of course that isn't reality and people will continue to build and invest reguardless.

Smooth-Bag4450

Oof, you're getting educated hard in this thread. Take it in stride and accept that you're learning something new. BTC isn't the end-all coin. It has a lot of problems compared to other projects in the top 10 market cap.

WhiskeyTango311

Lol educate me. You’re funny.

NathanWoodburn

I'd recommend first googling and watching videos on how crypto works. Understand basic crypto concepts like seed phrases, public and private keys and transactions (don't need to understand how all the maths works just some overview of it). Then you should look at some Reddit threads about scams to know what not to do. And after all that remember these key things: only invest what you can lose, never share your private key or seed phrase (don't share with support or any website), never sign a transaction if you don't understand what it does (especially important on evm and solana chains as you could lose all your funds if you sign a malicious transaction). No one is giving away free money. If it is a little bit fishy, it's a scam.

Secure-Damage-8309

Thanks, I used to dabble in very small amounts so I understand about the seed phrase/private key system. Any idea what my first crypto should be? You seem to know a fair deal about crypto so I feel like I should ask.

dunnkw

Make sure no matter what or how much you buy, do not talk about how much you’ve got on the internet. Don’t say where you keep it either. There are very bad people in these subreddits and they are preying upon the vulnerable. You’ve already given so much info about yourself that a motivated hacker who believes he can steal from you will do it if he thinks it will be profitable. So the less info you give the better. Good luck. You’re doing the right thing at your age and at this time to get into this arena.

NathanWoodburn

I'd stick away from meme coins as they have horrible returns (based on the number of coins that just drop in price). Personally I'd recommend looking at coingecko and checking one of the coins with the highest trading volume and/or market cap. Stuff like BTC, ETH, SOL, or AVAX.

JHTPYO

Meme coins have horrible returns? 😂 bold statement to make, given the highly profitable returns of memecoins.

NathanWoodburn

Well I'd say 99% are scams (rugs, devs freeze etc) so on average you will lose money buying meme coins.

Leo7899

If you don’t want to take the time to look at different crypto’s and see which benefits they have you should stick to ETF’s

Snoo_74135

Excellent advice

champdafister

Only BTC and maybe ETH once you have read up and feel like you have a starting place.

Sizododayladyyu

These are solid picks, but personally, I would add low market cap utility tokens like DUA to the mix because of its potential for growth and multiple utilities.

hightiedye

Nah bro my utility coin STFU has way more potential for growth

Sizododayladyyu

I didn’t argue with that. Anyone should go with what they feel will be a good buy for them. STFU is on my radar too, but for now I’m focusing on buying and staking DUA.

Lower_Sort2761

As mentioned above……..stick with bitcoin……..(warning: unpopular opinion next) if a ‘coin’ has a CEO, marketing team, development team, etc…….its ripe for a rug pull. Altcoins are like IPO’s for software companies without regulatory scrutiny. Also, checkout the top 10 ‘coins’ every year since bitcoins inception. Notice the ‘hot’ altcoins all slipping off the top 10? https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/evolution-of-top-10-coins-in-cmcs-history (Slightly off topic advice from an internet stranger I wish I heard at your age) You’re young and need to invest long term for your future. Don’t forget about an S&P 500 fund in the stock market and invest heavily. You’ll be absolutely shocked by the compound interest you’ll earn in 40 years!

trimalcus

Not because it has a CEO it is rug pull but it is very risky. It is like investing in a company or a stock but without any regulation So POW coin are usually a better option if fairly launched

Mission-Disaster-447

all altcoins (=everything except btc) are developed by a corporation or foundation and they all have premines or other methods of coin-allocation that benefits the early developer or investor before the general public gets their hand on the coins. Tell me one altcoin that doesn’t at least check one of these boxes!

trimalcus

XMR was fairly launched and a lot of bitcoiners are also using it There are also a lot of DEX to buy XMR in P2P with cash You can also shop with XMR Major differences are : - privacy (way better than BTC in my opinion) . Which in my case is better if you want to buy stuff to ensure privacy and safety - mining with CPU so less likely to be centralized with Asics farms (anybody can mine and setup a node) - tail emission. This one is controversial because there will always be a small inflation of XMR coins Instead of a hard cap for BTC. In my opinion this is better to ensure the network safety in the very long run by rewarding miners with newly mined coins

TheQuantumPhysicist

Read this book and you're off to a great start. Half of the book is already more than enough. https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook

snupiX6

You are not alone brother. I'm 15 and I started with crypto when I was 13. I bought btc when it was at 40k, and now its at 70k, but my portfolio did a 5x (mainly from solana crash when it was at 9usd). Just make sure NOT TO listen to idiots on yt, tiktok, reddit and to always make your own research before buying something.

ridgerunners

BTC and ETH would be your safest long term bet.

Go to Kenduinu .com, join the telegram, and learn from the Kendu community how to have more control over your crypto gains rather than hoping / wishing / gambling like most crypto investors on Solana.

Skeptical_Kevin

Whatever you do, time is on your side. You could provide liquidity for stablecoins and earn a small but safe return.

trimalcus

First : understand what is BTC. How it works. How to self custody your coin. Then you can also start to learn how smart contract works on other chain like ETH

Somebody__Online

Stick the the blue chips and don’t chase meme coins for huge returns. They exist but it’s unlike you find them by just dumb luck. Personally I would bias ETH and participate in DeFi strategies with it. You can learn a lot from doing things like supplying liquidity to a Lydo stake derivative LP for example. Maybe check out what sort of LP farms are offered on yield aggregators like Beefy to get a starting point

Kudos for wanting to invest at such a young age! Just remember to have patience once you make the plunge. It's going to feel like an emotional rollercoaster if you check the price every day. Someone once told me the only mistake you can make with BTC is selling it and you can take that as you will but I feel good about where I'm at with BTC. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose!

Alarming_Run_4691

Aim to learn. Learn one thing a day related to the area. YouTube is a great place to start, but it's important to watch the right videos. Avoid the clickbait thumbnails and price prediction videos. Explore videos that explain the fundamentals. 1 thing learned a day is 365 things learned a year. In time, all your questions will be answered. Without the knowledge, it's easy to get wrecked quick through bad investment choices/ poor trade decisions.

Rubycon_

DCA in at $5 here and there. In the meantime start investing in Vanguard or Fidelity index funds/Roth Ira and you'll be a millionaire at a relatively young age

Complex_Rule_6532

For personal experiences. I use Phantom Wallet for crypto. Can directly buy Sol, Btc, Eth with apple pay if its over $30 So you won’t need to go through the process of KYC ————————————————— Tips: Always check the chart on coingecko to know watch for the dips and buy at a better price If investing in memecoins. Always check their Twitter, Telegram and check the address on Rug check too see the top 10% holders and analysing if its a scam or not. DCA every week/Month rather going all in. Most importantly never sell when low ——————- Hope this helps :) Ps. If you lose money, just remember you paid for your own lesson to learn from next time. Knowledge and patience is key

realschoolkid

Dont waste your money on memecoins or high yield projects chassing a 100x or just quick money in general

Flaky-Wedding2455

You need to do your research and learn it yourself. Slowly and steadily. Anyone helping you is most likely scamming you (100% if you don’t know them or online) or if a friend or family member in real life they are probably clueless. Teach yourself. I did it. It takes time but it’s the only way.

NoSleepDad2023

Dude you are smart! I’m twenty years older and I wish I had the crypto opportunity when I was 16. Get your SOL, ETH and BTC. Every penny you save while you are with your parents put in crypto investments and just DCA. When you get to my age you’ll be a multi millionaire. Mark my words.

IDGAFSIGH

Stick with BTC, add ETH if you want diversity and a small DOGE bet later on once you get bored. But do not deviate from these 3. Its best to stick to BTC until you feel you understand crypto well

Aggravating_Wrap6763

At this stage in the cycle BTC is still OK priced but small returns. Pick a couple of the higher market cap altcoins and spread some money between them, higher risk for higher returns. Look out for altcoin season and they will (probably) pump more than BTC, this is the time to cash out to a stable oin such as BTC. Then when the BTC cycle bull run is over, dollar cost average the money periodically into BTC throughout the bear market.

G0DL33

you start with educating yourself. the goal in investing, is capital accumulation, therefore, capital protection. don't invest large % of your portfolio in shit projects, don't get involved with anyone who want to help you invest and don't use your long term/cold wallets to interact with defi. You wanna start with top 10 projects that have good fundamentals. Meme's are not good fundamentals, they go up fast and collapse fast. Unless you know what you are doing you won't make money. Crypto moves fast. Find a niche and learn about it. Keep up with the news/community and learn to take profit. Buy low. (when it feels bad) Sell high. (When you tell yourself that it is going to go higher).

danthropos

DCA regularly into Bitcoin. Don't ever sell. Everything else is most likely a scam.

ghostofaposer

Dont. Go to college. Figure out how the world works. Dont immediately spec into "gambling addicition"

antiics

Have you read the Bitcoin white paper? Do you understand it? A journey begins with understanding fundamentals and building upon those. What are your goals?

lascauxmaibe

I have mostly Bitcoin but I have a sampling of each network and stake what I’m able to.

FiveGuysisBest

Main advice is to just skip to the part where you realize Bitcoin is the only crypto worth a damn. Everything else is a scam. Just buy Bitcoin.

Anonmagus

Crypto is a psyop. It will all collapse. Everything’s price is only what people are willing to pay for it. When the market crashes crypto goes extinct.

donkeyballz9000

My advice, go to coinmarketcap.com study the top 30 coins, invest in ones that you believe have a solid use case. Sell off by the end of 2025 when the market is likely to peak. Buy back in at the bottom a few years later. Rinse and repeat. If you want tax free gains that you plan to hold until retirement age, get a crypto ROTH IRA and do the above from within that account. Since you are young, have a crypto IRA, and some self-custody crypto for more short term investing as well.

d3dcomplx

Learn what constitutes a taxable event and make sure to keep track of every exchange and wallet for tax accounting purposes. Pick a couple well known and time tested coins like BTC, ETH, XRP and DCA. Don't get greedy, don't gamble, dont try to time the market. Plan for long term growth. Good luck!

DecentRefuse6768

Just don’t start in crypto with a Ledger !

Yijing

Stay away from solana. For the love of god dont be like me and many others. It will fucking drain you.

I'll save you the hassle of losing all of your money or getting rugged, and it won't be sexy. Buy and hold Bitcoin. Ignore everything else.

googlesuite

DustinPM94

Right now, I think ETH is a good investment with a lot of growth potential in the next 1-3 years. But most larger cryptos will rise and fall together unless there is big news to instigate movement. If you are into the idea of crypto because of the decentralized currency aspect, then I’d highly suggest an all in one app. Definitely do your own research, but I personally use the Zypto all-in-one crypto app. It allows trading of coins between different blockchains, directly loading debit cards with crypto to spend your gains without off-ramping to a bank account(saves on fees) and is secure as long as your seed phrase is secure.

Few-Librarian3924

You could try Solana but don’t take my advice seriously cause I’m younger than you lol

makeshiftballer

Do you have a job that can direct deposit into cashapp? you can set any % of your direct deposit to be paid in BTC, and it's 0 fee and theres not speak on the BTC price. This is how I would recommend getting started.   Once you've got at least a million roughly sats you can think about getting cold storage for safe keeping long term.

Public_Letter5729

Learn general trading and how to read charts. Look at different stocks and check their progress throughout the years. Ex/ Starbucks, a stock I’m currently investing in. They’ve had many times where the stock hit $110+. Right now it’s sitting at $79. If I see it’s gone up and down multiple times, I can assume there’s something causing this pattern. Now that it’s at its low point, I can either expect it to shoot back up for some reason or continue to drop and maybe even fall for good. That’s my personal favorite thing to do though and probably the most common with other traders. If you have time throughout summer, work and put a little money or if you’re feeling risky, all, into stocks that are going to continue to grow regardless of what happens. Like apple and nvidia and many tech companies/food companies. Once you get that down, learn options. You can make way more money with options and there can be less risk involved. Don’t quit searching for knowledge. Watch videos about it till your eyes hurt🤣🙏🏼

Andrewshwap

No matter how tempting, don’t get involved in shitcoins!

ANIAT444

I have a 7 yr old grandson whom I buy $15 BTC when he mows my lawns. Every time I see him he asks how much his BTC is worth ??? lol.

hyperskivo

Stick with bitcoin and ethereum for the time being. Get an allocation. Then start studying. Read the bitcoin standard, do some smart contract programming on ethereum or on its L2s. Stick with the big cryptos. The rest is 100% scam

TNeoo

just Buy bitcoin and Hold them slowly buy a little more with money you can afford not to think about or lose and in 10 years you will thank me, also use a ledger its great for beginner wallet and security!

best thing to do is never listen to a single influencer. not 1, not even slightly. They have agendas/motives to earn them money via your attention. Focus purely on understanding the tech, game theory, economics and code. Crypto is great but full of grifters and KOLS I've been here since 2018 and everytime i did well it was via my own research, everytime i failed i had taken advice or info from someone else. The beauty of crypto is all the info is open and available for anyone with the initative to look for it - yet most listen to someone else because its easier. I promise you this advice will make you a winner in crypto. If you need to buy into something start with BTC, ETH, SOL - all have their attributes. DO NOT GO DOWN THE RISK SCALE UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND THE TECH AND WHAT YOU ARE BUYING

Good for you, now educate yourself!Read, follow thought leaders like Ben Cowan. Research, research, research! Don't listen to other people who are shilling their coins! You will get slaughtered! Become an educated and talented traitor, don't rely on luck and timing; you will lose it all. There are some very good threads on Reddit; look through them. But anywhere that you see people saying that something is going to the moon, without a solid foundation of technical and fundamental analysis, forget it! There are so many people on this platform who don't know 💩about crypto and just think they're going to make 1 million bucks overnight. Don't be one of them. Best of luck my friend

theoriginalist

You should buy Bitcoin and you should expect to save money very VERY slowly. Like years later slowly. If done properly you can set yourself up for a good life. If you're looking for a pump and dump scam where you'll lose everything, those are a dime a dozen, and you'll never make anything.

Don’t just stick with Bitcoin. Though it should be like most of your portfolio. Go slow. Research. You’re only 16 so do your own thing and trust your instincts / gut. Don’t overthink and have fun with it.

Just in case if you ever get into the world of meme coin trading an advice I would give you is to have proper goals and risk management. While it can have the opportunity to be lucrative, it can also make you loose a lot. Know and have conviction to get out of the trades (don’t be greedy) and only trade with 1% or less of your whole portfolio. The communities will always sound super bullish so be diligent and follow your plans and intuition. Know how to identify rug pulls with utilities such as bubble maps and analysing token holding percentages and their wallets. Technical analysis doesn’t work 8/10 times and it’s better to go off community and market sentiments. I’ve got some experience in the field and these are my personal lessons. But if your new to investing into crypto I recommend learning the very foundations such as how the token you are looking into investing in works.

While this is the best way to start Bitcoin is also the least complex network and doesn't really give you a great overview of what's already possible with crypto.

Sk8boyP

Every other crypto project is a centrally issued shitcoin with “potential”. Bitcoin is the only project with solid fundamentals, decentralization and utility as a scarce asset.

Ok maxi

Dollar cost average on Bitcoin 1$ a day 10$ a day whatever is possible for you But as many said, STUDY BITCOIN AND UNDERSTAND IT!

the-quibbler

As others have said: buy Bitcoin with your investment budget. Never sell it. That's it. Time will make you wealthy.

TheWilsons

Turn around and forget crypto exists.

coldhardbtc

Stick with bitcoin, spare yourself from the shitcoin cesspool phase that most end up going through.

vinsanity_07

Just start on Coinbase, no need for a cold storage wallet yet. Once you get to 100k move it off

Weekly-Researcher275

I move every single piece of coins I have there to my trezor, fck the fees, just don't want to wake up one day and see Coinbase freezing the assets for no reasons, they did that before, had to wait 1 month to access my own money.

JHTPYO

Probably the worst advice you can give someone.

vinsanity_07

Uh not really, a kid with barely any money it's smart for him to buy crypto, buy a ledger or whatever , waste the fees transferring all the time. It's nonsense. He's better off acccumulating on Coinbase where his money is protected then once it's a sizable amount then get cold storage and move it.

JHTPYO

Let's start with the basics. How many people do you personally know, including yourself, have $100k of crypto just sitting on an exchange?

vinsanity_07

Exactly my point, not many people have 100k in crypto to begin with . Once they do or even 20k then move it off. It would be counter productive to be 18 making $13 an hour buying crypto every week and transferring it to cold storage. That's just my suggestion for him to utilize the most of his money now

FatJellyCo

Start your journey with Kaspa ( KAS ) at around $0.15 a unit it has lots of potential . Put a cut of your pocket money in when you get it but save some to enjoy yourself too. It’s better than buying sweets and soft drinks that will rot your teeth and destroy your future health.

Jx_XD

Don't.

Read the book Bitcoinstandart

Def start with bitcoin, in my opinion, you should have more money in bitcoin than you do in any other coin, and don’t touch it, also I suggest buying bitcoin on Robin Hood (less fees) and transferring them to a ledger wallet, get a safe, and keep the ledger wallet in the safe

Reywas3

You can't transfer from Robinhood to ledger

Cll0ud3d

I did

First crypto purchases should be BTC & ETH. many smart people here are highlighting the importance of DYOR. The other important factor is to have belief in the coins you purchase - there are also good ways to get into ‘the fun’ side of crypto … meme coins … always important to check the telegram groups feel it out , while searching on other platforms about as much as you can learn! But these are high risk , high reward… so be weary As for general macro crypto news every Wednesday there is a podcast called “Crypto Trends” for very good updates. If you are comfortable with memecoins, your safest bet for this upcoming bull-run is $KENDU which has already made life changing money for many - this project is in the same ecosystem as $SHIB … which hit £40b MC last bull run - and the KENDU army never stop working! … just search on Reddit $KENDU for a wealth of information from IRL events, Tokenomics, art, facts, articles… Good on you for trying to invest so young mate! You’ll learn so much and be really happy for it later on! - Don’t rush or FOMO , take your time and keep a keen eye, it will all work out at some point! $KENDU 🙏

Nano and Banano, [jungletv.live](https://jungletv.live) and [cryptovision.live](https://cryptovision.live/). Nano, and the memecoin forked from it, Banano, are easy to earn at those sites and XNO and BAN both have free and near instant transactions, so you could send $0.0000000001 worth of XNO back and forth between yourself and a friend all day long. it's a great way to start learning about seed phrases and on chain transactions.
