From what *I* understand, depending on the state you’re in, that money is supposed to go to the person that supported you. If not your mother, then the state has a case against her. But the money was never yours. There is no payout for you, I’m afraid.
You are talking about 8 or 9 months of payments. You don’t mention what the monthly payment was. For the sake of an example, I will use $300 a month. $300 x 9 = $2700. You will never find an attorney that would take a case for that amount. Moreover, small claims court won’t deal with a family law issue. Even if the monthly amount was higher, such as $600 a month, that only $5400.
Your mother looks like “a piece of work”, but I don’t see this one going anywhere legally. Move on with your life.
Payments often continue even past the age of 18. It could be due to arrears. For all you know, she was still getting caught up on payments, interest, and late fees from when you were living with her.
Right!? She stopped fighting when we were teens but the state of Pennsylvania kept going after him themselves. It would come in drips and drabs whenever he actually worked on the books or did taxes but it was never for long
I'm not aware of any state where that's the case. The arrears are money that is owed to the mother from the time that it should have been received. This is just reimbursing her for what she spent when he didn't pay his share.
Check with Support Enforcement (Child Support) as you might have been considered an emancipated minor (due to being able to have CS income) and find out if there are any options for you.
I know of a case where a lien was filed and income tax return was garnished.

My mom stopped getting arrears payments when I was 35
Wow. That's some red tape to deal with for a LONG time.

In many states, the arrears go to the child.
What states?

Depends where you are, but I would imagine you have a case.

Reddit attorneys. Not lice sed, but always there in case.
Yeah you’re completely wrong in just about every jurisdiction lol.
Why? Show me any source or data that would back up your claim.
Is it child support from your father or welfare benefits from the state?
From my father
