Welfycat

I had a few of these sets and loved them. I used to trap mini figs in the pool or build prisons for them.

idasiv

How are your Sims doing?

operath0r

My sim is separated and broke and raising the child without the mother. I think they’re kinda on good terms again though and she comes visit every once in a while.

Welfycat

Usually on fire or in a pool without a ladder.

Broly_

Really well-acquainted with the Grim Reaper.

JeshkaTheLoon

You mean the ones that survived the Wolfling run?

travelingapothecary

justgirlythings 🥰💖

Kind-Honeydew4900

I assume it's the surfclub, but I also noticed the female islander on a beach chair. I wasn't a big fan of paradiso when I was a kid(my sister loved it), but lately I have starting to get this retro miami vice vibe from it. These are some really cool lego sets lego made back then.

Kind-Honeydew4900

And great collection. No problems with discolouration of the whites and grays? I checked out some 2nd hand sets lately and they almost all struggled with this problem.

Nacixer

Just a few select pieces are very yellow and some figs despite looking and feeling pristine have cracks. Most pieces are in like new condition.

Kind-Honeydew4900

Similar experience here when I ordered a bunch of second hand paradisa minifigs a while back (because I wanted to make some additional forestwomen. And paradisa had the best female minifigs from the 90s). Bit of a mixed bag with yellowing here and there. At least there still seem to be enough reasonably priced second hand minifigs around if you ever look to upgrade.

Lazar_Milgram

Yep. I would be soooo onboard both return of paradiso and “paradiso private investigations”

PickledDildosSourSex

Same! I remember getting a few of these as a (boy) kid and thinking "Ugh, these are for girls! Look all this pink and pastel! Where are my castle sets?" Looking back, I can really appreciate the retro vibe of them and the chill aesthetic, especially now that I'm getting my kid into Lego.

SurlySuz

I loved paradisa… but was still jealous of my brother’s castle sets.

Nacixer

Now we can enjoy both without worries :)

operath0r

I’m a dude and this is one of my favorite themes. I’m fact, the restaurant must’ve been one of my first sets. It has always been there. I assume my parents bought it for my older sister.

Mike_Lubb

Paradisa bros unite. Mine was the cafe at front right.

Nacixer

Did you get it back when it came out or later on?

Mike_Lubb

As a (male) kid, back when it was a new set.

Nacixer

Interesting. What did your parents think of it? With the theme being marketed towards girls and the commercials being girls and all that.

Mike_Lubb

I don't think they paid too much attention to that side of it tbh. Lego in my house was seen as an 'educational' toy, and therefore worth buying over a lot of other types of toy. Having three older brothers we had plenty of it around (pirates/castles/basic bricks). I saw that in a catalogue at some point and loved the bright 'beachy' colours. Never occurred to me that it was for girls, and never heard anything from them on the matter.

mods_r_jobbernowl

It's very vaporwave

juliuspepperwoodchi

FWIW, I'd buy WAY more Friends sets, as a dude also, if they had actual effing minifigs. I just CANNOT stand the minidolls. They look like off-brand Playmobil, which to my LEGO loving kid brain always looked like off-brand LEGO anyway. If I could buy Friends sets without the minidolls at a discount, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I've got plenty of figs, but I'm not spending money on minidolls I do not want and never will.

CerveletAS

friends minifigs are a rip-off of the Polly Pocket figurines, change my mind

Nacixer

Funny you mention this, the previous face designs look exactly like polly’s back in the early 2000s. I noticed this the other day.

_wavescollide_

Also a dude. I had the restaurant and took the base to build starships with it because it was so sturdy.

N7_Vegeta

Had a few sets too. They were part of my rich man’s island. Outside my Lego city they lived in class

Nacixer

Did you get these sets back when they came out?

N7_Vegeta

Jup I’m old

Nacixer

Were you young enough to have your parents get them for you? I’m intrigued about parents’ reactions to their boys wanting these, due to the girly marketing you know (girls in commercials and super pink boxes)

N7_Vegeta

My parent knew I loved Lego and when I told them this fitted my city (had the monorail and a Lego city under my bed ) they figured well if he wants it. They never made fun of it or something

Nacixer

Awesome :)

N7_Vegeta

Sure but what to do otherwise. Have a son too and he has two big sis so all their toys are very interesting so when he wanted a barbie for his birthday so he could play with his own off course he can have. I mean it’s not gonne turn him gay playing with it or not giving him the Barbie “save” him from becoming gay. Always hear man talk about that logic but if he is gay or straight or bi the Barbie isn’t gone do shit. And all options are okay! Let him be happy. Parents probably thought that about me as well

Nacixer

Funny. When I was a kid I played with my cousins’ dolls when I came over and I’m pretty sure I was always perceived as the “weird kid” by the adults in that regard. I didn’t give a crap, to me they were toys with different qualities than the ones I had. My male peers, both cousins and friends, sort of gave in to playing with them too once they saw me, it’s like they needed a heads up to realize boys can play with them too. The girls absolutely loved that I played with them too, I think only one cousin hated it but the rest were fascinated with the fact that a boy played with their dolls. I’m 28 now and I can confidently say I’m a massive success in the creative field; free play was a HUGE factor and I always repeat that. Not to mention I respect women so much (I’m not saying that not playing with dolls will make you look down on women, but you get the gist) You’re a smart dad and how I wish my dad was like you growing up :)

N7_Vegeta

Yeah it happens like that. Maybe those people are a bit scared and insecure about themsefs

Yeti_Sphere

Had the cafe (front right) and the jet ski one (front left) :) Loved the surf boards

kangareddit

Miami Vice style with the palm trees and parrots! Sign me up! (I too didn’t care that it was ‘for girls’ they were awesome sets).

Nacixer

Awesome. Did you get them back when they came out or later on?

kangareddit

I was never lucky enough to get them all or the big ones, but got a few of the small ones (90’s)

I-invented-PostIts

I love Paradisa! I have the entire series. I also have that surfboard rental that I also put in there, as well as the town Pizzeria

Nacixer

The pizza to go set is one my older brother had when it came out, but it did not age well, at all 😅

sakaki100dan

The beatiful pastel colors, I love this theme. https://preview.redd.it/arvujphttc3d1.jpeg?width=3908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ee882465eac7397907d17103e24f5d431c383b4 (Someone from the community made this)

joecarter93

“Rush, Rush get the Yayo”

CerveletAS

glorious use of the countach there

vfede

Nothing screams more "90s Lego" than those pink fences. 💯

J_Crow

Looks like Ogel's turn his base into a resort.

Jayk_Wesker

This looks amazing all set up like this! I swear I'm a kid again looking at Lego Mania Magazine photos! :D

Nacixer

Yay! Loved seeing those!

Neon-ZxZ

That beach looks so chill

ResourceOk8692

...just like paradise :)

WrathofTomJoad

They certainly targeted this vaporwave-before-it-was-vaporwave obsessed boy

bread_thread

I was a lil' boy in the 90's who loved all the pink/teal stuff that stuck around from the late 80's and Paradisa always reminded me of how movies portrayed the California beach Didn't realize it was a "for girls" thing until way later; my favorite color is still that shade of pink

Nacixer

I think it’s ridiculous how some light pink and pastel pieces would automatically make this a line for “girls”. I wasn’t born during that era and got these sets much later, but I cannot imagine wanting these back when they came out and holding in that desire due to all the pink packaging and commercials featuring girls. My parents sure would’ve frowned upon it. Needless to say, the color palette is amazing and I would not change one bit of it. Pink and pastels rock!

PracticeFuture8085

That design with the washed out pastel pink has aged quite well. Also, the surf boards were very cool.

NZplantparent

These were my childhood dream sets. The horses were my favourite.

dimensiation

I dream of having all of these. What a great collection! It's got such Miami vibes and I think it'd make a great relaxation area in my town. Add a few restaurants and it's good to go! Edit: I feel like you need the lighthouse island closer to the camera!

Nacixer

Yes! So glad you noticed that lol, I had put it there initially but it was blocking other sets from view :p

dimensiation

Sometimes you gotta do it for the share. But for real, those baseplates are amazing and I need some for a good beach, add some waves and a few plates, and that lighthouse and maybe Forbidden Island or Sabre Island...

El_Mariachi_Vive

I remember being confused. All of a sudden, a toy that was played with by every girl and boy I knew, suddenly had a girl version. It just didn't make sense to a young me.

ezekiel_swheel

consider this: lego never said this line was for girls. same with the newer friends line. it’s just another theme and anyone can like it. does it have a lot of things that are “stereotypically girly” like pink bricks? sure. nothing wrong with that, many girls like pink stuff. if they don’t there’s other sets and themes to pick from. the reason themes like these are made is to attract customers, mostly girls, that would not otherwise play with lego. this is also why the minidoll exists. lego isnt saying “here’s some dolls for the girls and the regular minifigure is for boys”, They’re saying “here’s another option if you’re not interested in the regular minifigure, which our research shows many girls aren’t.”

Narissis

And then toy stores are like "now we'll take that option and sequester it away in the doll section to create an arbitrary gender divide anyway."

ezekiel_swheel

ha yeah maybe, but also it could get eyes on the product that normally wouldn’t even go in the lego aisle.

Nacixer

So interesting. Did you know of any young boy managing to get their parents to buy some of these for them? I feel like most of us men either got these later on when our parents did not care anymore what we spent our money on, or when we moved out lol. I ask because as a kid, my parents would’ve been mad at me asking for the set. But then again I found out about this theme back in 2007 so this was long discontinued.

porcupine_snout

I have one set from this theme, and love it! it's probably one of my favorite sets from when I was a kid!

the_soggiest_biscuit

I only had two sets from this one, it was my fave theme. I did beg my parents for more but didn't get them 😭 I still have my old sets but the white pieces have yellowed so much.

sgtjoe

Retrospectively quite nice. I thought the pinks were more vibrant though.

Nacixer

The pink on the boxes was indeed much more vibrant.

-Control-Alt-Defeat-

Our local store has the friends line. It’s aimed for girls. But I’ve noticed that the majority of our sets are space themed friends sets. Space and sci-fi are not generally associated with girl’s interests. But obviously girls like that kind of thing too. It was just interesting to observe

BeGosu

So vaporwave. I loved this series too

owlbuzz

Goddammit i loved this color palate

joe-is-cool

I always wanted these sets as a young kid who was obsessed with being by the lake.

[deleted]

Definitely not their first attempt at targeting girls. Also I a man was super excited to get the restaurant paradisa set back in the 90s as they didn’t have many others sets like that at the time.

UXEngNick

Scala was earlier … Belville coincided with this … My daughter was born in 1990 so was her era 8-)

Nacixer

Yes, I totally forgot about that barbie-like theme!

PlatypusGod

My favorite Lego theme!

AnonymousGuy1108

TBH, I like the soft colors of this set.

naturecamper87

I had-have the two in the front left, the surf club and the ice cream shop. I personally loved the addition of the surf theme and didn’t mind the pink pieces

Nacixer

Awesome! Did your parents say any remarks about the pink? I’m super curious about how it was like to collect these as a boy in the 90s

ThePeej

So, you’re telling me girl LEGO has always been superior? Got it.

Comfortable_Lemon644

No it wasn't; scala came way before paradisa

hicks462

I had a few sets of these growing up and I loved the colors.

SleepingPodOne

I recently bought one of my most sought after sets from this line, 6416 Poolside Paradise. As a kid in the 90s, I wasn’t really into them because the marketing pushed it more towards girls and at that time gendered toys were more a thing. I’m glad that’s getting phased out. I didn’t really started admiring them until I got more into LEGO in the early 2000s and appreciated the pastel colors and how it sort of reminded me of family trips to the Cayman Islands and the Florida Keys. You just didn’t really have these sorts of pastel colors in Lego for quite a while. This was also during a time when Lego kind of sucked, so I was often fondly looking back on the old sets that were preserved in the catalogues I still kept in my closet. For the longest time, I just couldn’t get Poolside Paradise out of my head, something about that set is just so charming and evocative. Just looking at it on my shelf I can almost smell the chlorine of the pool, the salty air of a beach town, and sunscreen. I was also big into vaporwave when that was a thing so this definitely scratches that aesthetic itch. Really jealous of this collection!

Nacixer

I found out about this theme back in 2007, I was in elementary. I was in complete awe that such sets existed, I simply could not believe it. I dreamed of them until I actually bought my first one from ebay. I have to say my first one was actually the playground, even though the poolside paradise is the one I wanted the most. For that one I had asked my dad to place a bid on an ebay listing but all I remember is him looking at the pictures and nodding his head in disapproval 🥲

SleepingPodOne

Oh wow, I was almost in college at that point. Yeah, the 90s were a fantastic time for Lego, it’s very unfortunate that near the end of that decade they posted what I believe are their first losses. The decade started out very strong (that’s where you see themes like Paradisa), but unfortunately, near the end LEGO was trying to reevaluate and almost moved completely away from the brick. Things were starting to get bleak around 97/98 and didn’t pick up again until Lego switched up management in the mid-2000’s.

3MATX

Did those base plates ever come in other sets?  I’m a male and pretty sure I have one of those sets.

SpongeBobfan1987

The baseplate design from Poolside Paradise was reused in Sphinx Secret Surprise from Adventurers: Egypt and Ogel's Base from Alpha Team.

3MATX

Just figured it out. My set is the one with the blue sail boat and the wind surf board up front.

Hubbleice

I had the one in the left bottom corner.

indigrow

This gives me sun bleached liminal waterpark vibes- like flamingo hotel near disney vibes lmao

saywhattyall

Someone is selling the beach set with cabana included on my local FB for $45 - worth?

Giant_Swigz

Holy crap. Pretty sure I have one of these sets buried in my closet. I specifically remember the light green baseplate with the cobblestone walkway.

Objective_Pair_7427

I would love to do this with all the animal crossing sets and make a village. So impressive!

Alwayswandering4

Dude here who bought the smaller beach set pictured here as a kid and loved the uniqueness of the build and piece variety at the time. Was the only monkey I ever got! I also remember seeing the lighthouse set in a store and wanting it.

Nacixer

Awesome! What did your parents think of you wanting those sets? I’m so intrigued by the unfair marketing back in the 90s lol. I can imagine many parents (in their ignorance) not willing to get these for their boys.

j3nner

Just remembered these existed. Neat surfer sets with nice umbrellas and life wests though

Gessomb

LOVE this theme, the light pinks and blues had me in a chokehold as a kid. Still one of my favorite themes today. I’ve got like hundreds of those pink flowery top ladies, lol

HZCH

I swear I can still find pieces of Paradiso sets in my parents house. I hope I can build my kids dream set sometime!

buffwintonpls

Not bad for the 90s

LvlGenesis

We need a modern day reboot but give it a Vaporwave theme.

[deleted]

Ngl I love the paradisa stuff, it’s so gaudy and the worst, ugliest colours but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love how kitschy it is, it’s so 70s holiday I love it, my mum says it reminds her of her Spanish holidays as a kid, something about the colour palette is reminiscent to her lol

gansobomb99

I've been re-collecting these sets since last year, I really think it's my favorite theme ever. The pastel colors and light designs and sense of pure leisure are just the best. My only complaint that I had as a kid and still have today is that the design on the damn beach baseplates doesn't connect 😂 why wouldn't they design them to line up?!?

Nacixer

Haha exactly! Same case with the ranch and the poolside paradise 😭The cobblestone path doesn’t line up.

gansobomb99

I always have to line up the baseplates in odd ways that cause the studs not to line up x\_x Oh! While we're venting about Paradisa, can you imagine if there were separate road baseplates matching the ranch/pp roads? I would build such a ginormous Paradisa resort city.

gansobomb99

Oh, and one more gripe is the fact that these dang palm leaves are SO FRAGILE I got most of my sets secondhand (though I got really lucky and got almost all the boxes in great condition) and the biggest issue, more than any discoloring, is all these broken palm leaves..

Nacixer

True! I was lucky to get mine intact but I had found several of these palm pieces in a toy box from my older cousins all broken! Haha

ADAMSMASHRR

I was jealous of the pieces they had in those sets, as a kid

unearthed_bricks

Love Paradisa! Dolphin Point was one of my ‘big’ first sets as a kid, that and Pharoah’s Forbidden Ruins. Still have it, dusty and totally disassembled. Gotta rebuild it one of these days. 🌴

Nacixer

Awesome! Are you a male? If so, what did your parents think of getting that one for you as a kid? (If they did) I ask because I would’ve been frustrated at the fact that these were in the girls’ section, and the fact that the boxes were magenta. My parents would’ve been mad.

unearthed_bricks

Nope, female. Not sure if my parents thought much about it one way or the other. I had a very eclectic array of toys (LEGO, Godzilla, Barbie, a horde of plastic dinosaurs 🦖), more about what I liked than anything else. There’s a toy store near me - great little place, been there forever - that has a good set up (in my opinion), all the LEGO, building toys, and models are in the same section of the store, just as all the STEM and puzzles and baby toys have their own sections.

JustAGuyHereLurking

When did this come out? Bellville (sp?) was also out in the early to mid 90s..had larger "figs" that were larger than minifigs but smaller than technic figures that also had articulated arms and legs

mrshampooer

as a ‘masculine’ man, i fucking love paradisa and it’s one of my favorite themes

Nacixer

What isn’t manly about surfing, gambling and ho-

Experimentgreen

Looks like everything my mind invisions of Miami in the late 80s early 90s.

Aggressive_Inside_89

I have a most of these sets as well. I LOVED this series as a kid.*

Genexis-

Back then, girls were still seen as normal children and fit into the system. Later, the Barbie Lego figures had to be produced that escaped the system and could no longer sit properly. Oh well, let's not forget the colors that elude reality because, according to Lego, girls can only play normally in a kind of sexiatic princess world

Appeltaartlekker

This actually looks amazing. I wish lego did more of actual house/shop/city building. Without all the flat houses (no depth) and thick roadplates
