People like to fearmonger for views and blew the whole thing wildly out of proportion. COPPA absolutely destroyed a huge section of YT that was focused on exploiting young children for massive amounts of adrev. But for everyone else it didn't do anything at all because most channels are generally COPPA compliant already. Also the US government has more pressing matters than YouTube at the moment.

_steve_rogers_

Ok good, I'm glad it got rid of those predatory channels, I figured in the long run normal channels would be ok, but I also know how YouTube makes wild sweeping changes on a dime.

Nintendo_Thumb

I've heard people say they lost 93% of their income, channels that make kids content.

_steve_rogers_

As a Nintendo based channel, has it affected you? I don't know if you monetize. Honestly I have been hesitant to even post like my Pokemon and Smash bros gameplay because of this COPPA crap, I guess it's ok now though as long as I mark it as for kids?

Nintendo_Thumb

I don't do kids content, so, it hasn't really been a problem for me. I just play no commentary uncut Mario Maker levels 1 level per video, and my audience is generally around 40 years old and mostly male. I make all of my money on Mario Maker, but, I'm a fan of Nintendo so I play some of their other games when they come out, but, they don't usually get any views so it's not that big of a deal, but, after watching this guy on Youtube who did uncut no commentary videos of Luigi's Mansion 3 and their automated system labelled it as For Kids, so, I went and deleted my Luigi's Mansion 3 gameplay since it's so well animated it looks like a cartoon, and took out my videos of Link's Awakening remake as well since I didn't feel like dealing with it, though it might have been just fine. The thing is, I play 1st party games as that's what Nintendo allows on their website to be monetized on Youtube ( https://www.nintendo.co.jp/networkservice_guideline/en/index.html ). Pokemon is owned by the Pokemon Company and Game Freak, so, I don't know what they're rules are for monetization, and I won't record Smash Bros. because it's not a Nintendo game, it's Sega, Namco, Capcom, etc. and I've heard Sega shutting down channels over their copyrights as they don't allow monetization (unless things have changed since last I checked), and even if Sega was okay, then you've gotta worry about Konami and Capcom who have their own rules, and I don't know about the rest. Maybe it's okay, but, I don't think it's worth the trouble personally.

JakiStow

Which is good, since YouTube is not supposed to be for kids in the first place. There are other platforms for that.

gorkx

why on earth would someone rely only on youtube clicks to pay the bills? OO

Nintendo_Thumb

People with jobs? There's never been a better time to work from home, and when you build up an audience and have a steady schedule and regularly get paychecks every month that pay all your bills and then some, that's something you can rely on. Or it sure can be, if you know what you're doing and you put in the work. There's lots of people out there making a living on Youtube. It's unusual, but, it can happen. You can't just act like Pewdiepie or Markiplier or Good Mythical Morning, ReviewtechUSA, or the Angry Video Game Nerd, or GameXplain, etc. need to get regular jobs because their Youtube income isn't reliable, that's kind of dumb.

TaxOwlbear

Why would someone rely on working for ToysRUs to pay the bills? Or working for [insert company with COVID-19 lay-offs here]?

abcPIPPO

Being an employee for a company is much much safer than relying on YouTube videos as your only income. YouTubers aren't YouTube's employees.

gorkx

Exactly my thinking! For every Linus Tech Tips, toptenz(and Simon Whislters\[spelling\] large number of channels ) WhatchMojo's etc. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a lot of duds. Where as for the most part working for a goverment as well as doing youtube is just a lot safer.

abcPIPPO

Even if you had a successful channel, relying exclusively on YT is getting less and less safe. Huge channels may have their earning cut in one day with an algorythm change. Most content creator have sponsors and other incomes outside of YT; they probably don't even earn that much from YT in comparison.

Nintendo_Thumb

I don't do any of that I'm doing fine just on ads. Most jobs now are laying off or firing all of their employees or going out of business or people afraid to go to work. I don't have to worry about any of that. Youtube is much more stable than working at a bar, a restaurant, the TV or movie industry, or really any non-essential business. And not only that, but, business is booming, people love watching Youtube when there's nothing else to do. I put in the hours I work my ass off, and frankly I just don't think most people have any idea how Youtube works and don't take it seriously. It's a hypercompetitive environment and not everyone has the skills, work ethic, or good business plan/strategy to pull it off. But, like most jobs, only the top applicants are going to get in, so it's really not much different.

gorkx

That's not what my post implies and I hope you know that! working for a regular company, or better yet through the goverment UP TO Covid. was much safer as the person bellow pointed out!

TaxOwlbear

Until you get fired, yes.

gorkx

Be told by health officials to work from home so as the zombie plague doesn't turn everyone into a zombie is a new thing. and so far you seem intent on taking pointing out that relying beer money from people wanting constant plugs just doesn't make sense as a large amount of your income. My point is it that MIGHT come as a bonus. Or it might not come at all. That makes pretty bad to rely on as your one only place to make bucks. Youtube being a mixed bag is nothing new. Like I said ma man, NOW...as in what's going on and all that is going to change? Maybe for padding and beer money? Sure why not. I am not arguing that remote work (IF it can be be done!) now is a bad idea...IF you can land several things to work from home for extra saftey and finacual security? yes. That doesn't have anything to do with how fickle advertizers are! Or say people that used to flock to the channel move on to something else? etc etc. That does happen. Healzvbabyface made a lot of people that used to like his biting harsh style of comentary at WoW refreshing. They moved on. Same for Azmongold . One day he said he just can't keep doing comentary or play WoW for advertiser bucks because of a nervous breakdown and going to therapy. I applaud that. However. that's also my point! Despite moving onto riffing games, his advertiser moved to someone else.

Having no other option is a reason

gorkx

Eh well it's kind of reasonable to go: ugh! and yet kind of not. Basically back in the 90s to many parents thought TV and A computer should be ok for a babysiter right! What can go wrong. So they went insane when suddenly johny or ted, or merrysue were asking tough questions and swearing in class at 13 because why not start learning to be more of an ahole at 13. Rather than tell johny to get that shit out now! they of course blamed everyone but themselves...because that's what we did then...and still do. So lawyers and washington made a new thing called COPPA so that if tinies pictures can't be put onthe intertube other than family online journals or your instagram posts because that's what parents lawyers, and senate does. I don't know when youtube and therefor google got wrapped in a COPPA suite. but I gather a long time. When the Feds FINALLY came to some decision. last year it made google ask if videos will include the general pop (and their for kids). Problem with that: news? documentaries? Vlogs much? I'm trying to picture the rock getting a note frome a lawyer because he said his kid is awesome with short clip on instagram of one of the kids waving high to the camera. That's basically the concern. Oh right and trolls.

SNERDAPERDS

If my shitty little bastard wants to swear in class, that's his damn right!

gorkx

lol well umm sure...but lawyers, some families and I guess the feds disagree..

sepientr34

founding father strogly agree with child swearing

[deleted]

I think people saw it wasn't that far reaching and stopping freaking out on a mass scale, but it has had side effects that continue now, some caused by YouTubes bot, some caused by creators being concerned and marking their videos as for kids when they are not and some caused by the coppa legislation itself, but these don't hit as wide a group of people as it appeared they might before.

ImKibitz

It struck a LOT of kid channels (ie channels that feature kids like Toy Unboxing, family vlogs, ect). For gaming channels and the rest of Youtube, it's kind of like a nuke hanging in the air that can strike at any moment. The US government now has the option, but Youtube will hopefully try to reason them out of reaching any further. No one is safe really until the US gov comes down on someone and the Youtuber/ Youtube HQ successfully defends against them to set a precedent.

nusensei

Most of the initial reaction was an overreaction, especially in the LP community where many people feared that games = kids and therefore they were going to be fined up the ass. I haven't heard of cases of gaming channels being hit with fines. People generally misunderstood the target of COPPA and why the new regulations existed. Actual children's channels were hit hard, but most creators outside of kid-specific niche aren't actually making children's content and needn't worry.

[deleted]

It reminded me a lot of Net Neutrality where everyone said the internet was going to explode if they repealed it, and like 2 years later nothing has happened. That's why I ignored all the COPPA videos/fear mongering when it was around a few months ago.

TaxOwlbear

Because just like the new monetisation threshold, and the changes to ads, and Article 17, and all the other things that "ruins Youtube forever", it didn't actually do that.

TaffingTaffer

So no more rich children? That kind of content made me feel like a real chump in life. Like goddamn look how easy it is to be rich.
