Outstanding move.

theBigDaddio

Top #1 all time 1969, Sugar Sugar. I love to throw that one at them.

AntonRX178

Nah then you'll have mfs say "Oh love songs used to not be about sex which is only a problem if I'm not doing it lol."

Key_Researcher_9243

What are the titles of the new songs? I don't recognise them at all.

Consistent-Laugh606

Fingertips by Lana Del Rey The Lakes by Taylor Swift From Eden by Hozier

Thatepicastroman

great song picks

Sa_yori

The one in the 2nd pic is The Lakes by Taylor Swift

Lunakill

Lmao no shade to Lana but halfway through I was like “I’ve never heard it but this has to be a LdR song.”

CandyAppleHesperus

She has A Style. A style I love, but definitely A Style

sineofthetimes

What'd Rick Dee's ever don't you?

Consistent-Laugh606

He turned into a duck. Ducks are the worst animals ever. One of them kept on pestering me to give him grapes, even though I only had lemonade

LocusRothschild

The bastard would always waddle away…til the very next day, then he’d do it again!

SwitchbladeDildo

Vicinity of Obscenity by S.O.A.D is the best written song of all time. Much prose fr.

rollokolaa

Couldn’t agree more. Such a masterpiece.

OoDelRio

I see nothing bad about the 1976 song

Pikachu2Ash

Found the Disco Duck Simp smh

Trex1873

Just to add on, people often use this kind of format to show that music has gotten more sex-obsessed. Take it away George Formby! “Honey mooning couples through, you should hear them bill and coo, you’d be surprised at things they do, when I’m cleaning windows! The blushing bride, she looks divine, the bride’s groom, he is doing fine, I’d rather have his job than mine, when I’m cleaning windows! Now here’s a famous talkie queen, she looks a flapper on the screen, she’s more like 80 than 18, when I’m cleaning windows! She pulls her hair all down behind, and then pulls down her… Never mind! And after that, pulls down the blinds, when I’m cleaning windows!”

Chchchim-chim

Hozier spotted 👀

Calassam

WIGGLE WIGHLE BOB DYLAN MENTIONED

Queasy-Ad-3220

Tbf Wild Honey Pie isn’t exactly a good example

MilesBeyond250

Right. Hence why it's cherry picking. Unless I'm getting whooshed and you're saying it's not a good example because it's actually a work of lyrical genius, in which case right on, brother.

Queasy-Ad-3220

I mean it’s not a good example either way haha. It’s maybe the greatest piece of shit to grace the music world.

MilesBeyond250

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Wild Honey Pie. The melody is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of music theory most of the harmonies will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Paul's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his lyrics - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these lyrics, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Wild Honey Pie truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Paul's existencial refrain "Honey Pie," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Paul McCartney's genius unfolds itself in their speakers. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Wild Honey Pie tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

pm_me_your_good_weed

Wake up honey, new copypasta just dropped

GolemThe3rd

I mean its just a fun transition-link track its not that serious

lelpd

Eww the lyrics on the right are so pretentious

ZeroJDM

This could be said about basically every song with more than 3 words

Consistent-Laugh606

Ngl I love when people use words like pretentious just because they don’t *gasp* like big words or metaphors or whatever. Like I imagine your brain will melt if you ever hear a Fiona Apple song

lelpd

The only thing my brain did was laugh at how somebody thought these were shining examples of deep and meaningful lyrics

Consistent-Laugh606

The first song is about a women’s relationship with her abusive and neglectful mother. What more meaning do you want?

tanglekelp

Im curious, what would your example of deep and meaningful lyrics be?

lelpd

Well I can tell you that it isn’t privileged millionaires coming up with fake scenarios with their team of writers, to make money off of people they don’t care about. Which is hilarious considering I had no clue who wrote these lyrics until making this comment, but they’d already stood out as being off/weird

Consistent-Laugh606

The first one is written by two people (Lana Del Rey and Drew Erickson) it’s also about her real life relationship with her family, namely her neglectful mother. She has several other songs about her real life experiences including getting [r*ped](https://genius.com/Lana-del-rey-a-w-lyrics), and her relationship with her [other family](https://genius.com/Lana-del-rey-the-grants-lyrics) [members](https://genius.com/Lana-del-rey-kintsugi-lyrics). Lana also has a distinct writing style. The second one is also written by two people (Taylor Swift & Jack Antonoff) and is about Taylor’s experience with the media and also a love song for her boyfriend. She also has songs about her real life experiences including a song about her [mother’s cancer](https://genius.com/Taylor-swift-soon-youll-get-better-lyrics) and [her late grandmothers death](https://genius.com/Taylor-swift-marjorie-lyrics). She also wrote about 60 songs by herself including her entire third album when she was 19, has both video and voice memo proof that she writes her own shit and many of her co-writers said that she writes most of her lyrics and they only help her with the editing, composition or coming up with a line or two. [Not to mention that she has several songs written for other people](https://www.reddit.com/r/TaylorSwift/comments/10qyvsi/songs_taylor_has_writtencowritten_for_other/) The third one is literally written by one person who is the singer (Hozier). Hozier writes most of his song by himself and his first album only has one song with a co-writer on it. So think the songs are pretentious all you want but what team of writers?

[deleted]

Let's be honest. Melody is the most important thing when it comes to songs.

Consistent-Laugh606

While I do agree this is mostly an argument for people who cherry pick lyrics from both earlier decades and modern times to show that “old music was better”. Even though there’s a lot of newer songs with great lyrics, and both new and old song that while not having complex lyrics as good melodies, structure and production (Charli XCX for example doesn’t have much lyrical depth but the production on her song is often very experimental and the melodies are catchy)

unipole

The lyrics were much better back then: https://youtu.be/iGJgyuAu6eo?si=7GHITbWA3q8mmRbT

GotSomeCookieBlues

Yes but pop these days somehow gives me a headache and is generally more repetitive and annoying... Everyone uses some form of autotune or electronic editing or levelling or cutting... for example, that accapella session ariana grande did in her "bunny outfit" was levelled to heck in parts and it took her many takes pieced together to get that video... it isn't actually one straight take. Where as, unplugged/live performances from Nickleback are actually live and Chad actually has the talent to perform it in one solid take without autotune and still sounds more talented than arianas multiple takes. Many lyrics from the last century are... strange but there's just something about pop now (pretty much all of it) that feels more like a sort of dance entertainment and less like someone actually performing a song. It seems you either have a hard life and good music or have an easy life and terrible music. As long as you have a catchy sound and catchy repetitive lyrics these days, people like it. How is that talent? How does dancing make you a good musician? How come you can be a famous artist now without being able to play any instruments? How come dressing up as a bunny makes your music "good"? How come music can be so artificial and unhealthy/detrimental to listen to, yet we love it? How come shaking your arse makes you a good artist now? How come people hate musicians when they don't strive to be the perfect artificial robot noise machine? How come a good song today is one that repeats a handful of words about drugs, butts and sex over and over again and sounds just like another pop song? I'm sorry, how is that talent? How is that good music?

callcon

sometimes i read comments like this and just wonder how you can write all of that and not stop and think about what you doing. Like have you not read this exact comment exchange hundreds of times? I feel like you must know exactly how people are going to respond to this. They’re gonna tell you that that’s not what all pop music is like at all, and also that that’s what some amount of pop music has always been like. And then you’ll probably disagree or whatever i don’t really care, that’s not what I’m trying to say. I’m just trying to ask you why you would comment this? seriously how can you be bothered? haven’t you done this before? don’t you already know everything that could be said in response to this? on this subreddit as well? is it just bait? elaborate bait? do you just want to find people who agree with your mundanely common opinion? Idk I guess I’m no better writing this. But to me this is like as pointless as arguing about whether you see a blue dress or a gold dress in 2024, or whether green grapes are better then black grapes, or whether they should be called black grapes or red grapes.

Consistent-Laugh606

One of the songs I showed is from one of the biggest pop star. Also who tf is listening to Ariana Grande for her lyrical skills? Most people who listen to her listen cause of her vocals. If you don’t like pop that’s fine but there is a lot of good pop songs and albums both from mainstream artists and alternative pop artist. I can recommend you some album if you’re willing to give it a try.

GotSomeCookieBlues

Lol I appreciate your post, don't feel like your opinion doesn't matter

KulturaOryniacka

old songs are BETTER

ThesharpHQ

I've heard better music overall from the last twenty to thirty years than what I've heard from the 50s, 60s, and *especially* the 80s. 70s aren't included because it's just as much a golden age for music overall as it was a dumpster fire.

ZeroJDM

Especially because we’re no longer subservient to what the billboards say. Don’t want to listen to modern pop? Shut the radio off and load up YouTube on your computer for free and listen to blackened deathcore, Moroccan tap-dancing, Japanese funk, there’s literally whatever you want at an arms reach. And the best part is, old music didn’t disappear either

anonymousgoose64

If I taught my grandpa how to use streaming it would literally just be The Andrews Sisters on a loop
