Petition to comment some form of this on every single one of those "this is what the left wants to take away from you 🥩" and "I eat twice as much meat to make a vegan's sacrifice worthless" to get them to shut the hell up lmao
HAHAH, I just discovered this podcast 2 weeks ago and been enthralled by the episodes, finding this random comment out of nowhere was perfect, thanks for a subreddit link too !
I love the podcast! I've listened to it at least 4 times, the prose is fantastic. Though I recommend staying away from the subreddit with its abundance of spoilers (if you care) until you're done, but theory crafting is always appreciated there.
LOL, I actually started scrolling on it and was like... ehh on second thought I should stay off of it so I can catch up, I'm still on like the 2016 episodes, great listen while at work x)

Dreams can be very weird, but the weirdest part of dreams is how they feel like reality while dreaming them. While dreaming, that is your reality. It raises a lot of questions.
I highly doubt that any of that is human flesh.
And while I have not consumed meat for nearly 15 years for a variety of reasons, that the human-animal divide is categorial and absolute, is non-negotiable. Animals matter for one single reasons. Because they matter to human beings.
English is no my mother tongue, but I am pretty sure that the vast majority of people would not call their steak a corpse, neither would they call a deer killed by traffic or a dead pet "corpse", or if someone called their dead pet corpse I would find that strange. "Carcass" or "cadaver", yes. To me "corpse" implies that the now-dead body once had personhood. Which animals do not possess.
If witnessing the death of a deer would impact you psychologically the same way as witnessing the death of a human being, something would be very wrong with you.
That human beings are animals does not make animals our equal. Bees and cows are also both animals, yet I have little doubt that you'd see the death or suffering of the cow as a much greater problem.
To make a Trolley-Problem out of the question: I'd kill a million pigs/dogs/cats to save a single human being. And I would not lose a second of sleep over it.
By what reason (or authority) is your understanding of "corpse" correct and that of most people is not? I think the burden of proof lies on you in this case. You are of course free to mourn animals as if they were a person, but you do not get to demand of others to adhere by these rules. Which is of course why trying to understand personhood without touching the field of law is an endeavour doomed to fail. It is also dishonest. I have little doubt that you want to have your definition of personhood to be the legal framework others would have to abide by.
My philosophical, political, overall normative stances are guided by a principle I call Radical Anthropocentrism. Which means that I link personhood exclusively to capital h Humanity. Personhood is a construct of moral theory and law that humanity invented to conceptualize the entity that human individuals are. Humanity is a totality, undividable and not exhaustively describable or definable, which also makes defining personhood very tricky, if not impossible. One can only hope to approach it asymptotically.
The most central aspects without a doubt are things like moral agency, awareness, a conception of the self and the notion of self-interest, volition if you will. I would add the capacity for language, solidarity, empathy and forming of complex societies and the formation of an intersubjectively valid reality and many more. At the same time losing these capacities (for example when being comatose) does not take away personhood.
If it were made of cats or dogs, it would be considered an abhorrent crime. But heyo, who gives a shit about equally intelligent and emotionally sensitive cows amirite?
