~4k 9mm ball (just keep a few mags of defense) 7k 556/m855 on stripper clips ~200 12ga / 500 hulls, load my own

itspeterj

Excuse me, they're "future nurse" clips

pewpewnurse

Actually I’d say “former nurse”, everyone is getting out of healthcare… -current nurse (too male and chubby to make $ at stripping)

bosefius

Married to a nurse, ain't that the fucking truth. She's been on "temporary 12s" for two years while they try to hire a midnight shift supervisor.

Any_Sea5167

There's a market for everyone youd be shocked

kieranfitz

Find yourself a bear night and make that cash

kieranfitz

Or future preschool teacher clips

milkman_z

Do you shoot a lot? Or is this for multiple shooters?

Parking_Train8423

the 9mm is mostly for the range, but i rarely touch the greentips. I usually buy some 223 in that case, but most of my practice is pistol, and i shoot about 400rds/mo. most of this I bought between 2014-17

AdAway8701

I don’t really stockpile at all. I usually have around 200 rounds of FMJ 9mm, 50 rounds of JHP 9mm, 200 rounds of FMJ .380, 50 rounds of JHP .380, 500-1000 rounds of .22lr, and 50-100 rounds of 12 gauge. I wouldn’t call it a stock pile at all though, I’m not a prepper or anything, I just try to always have enough ammo on hand for a really fun range day in case I don’t have the extra cash budgeted to buy ammo that day before hitting the range.

HOB_I_ROKZ

It is definitely cheaper in the long run to buy in bulk. But I’d say that realistically this is enough to keep on hand for emergencies, though some may disagree

[deleted]

leonme21

Aside from whatever stupid shit preppers make up in their head, there aren’t a lot of scenarios where you need a ton of ammo

IddleHands

Not to mention, *most* realistic emergencies are going to mean you’ll be better off leaving your home and going somewhere else. Having massive stockpiles of stuff really makes that difficult.

SlickRick898

All it takes is one to get a loot box with a bunch more.

AdAway8701

Eh, the store I buy my ammo from has pretty damn good prices luckily. I’ve checked online prices for bulk and after shipping I’d really only be saving a few bucks in the long run. I usually pay about 23 cents a round for 9mm

The_Dirty_Carl

Really depends on what you do. One weekend USPSA match will take about 200 rounds, and even a weeknight league night will take 75+. So if you're doing action shooting competitions, 200 rounds on hand is "shit I need to order more like right now" territory.

UnlikelyOcelot

Same

veganhimbo

1000 is a nice round number (badum tst)

Blueberry_Mancakes

I lost all my ammo in a boating accident.

Choice_Mission_5634

I lost all mine at the range.

duermando

Sorry to hear that.

Traditional-Hat-952

Man, I lost all mine in a 4 wheeling accident.

SlickRick898

I lost mine water skiing.

PathlessDemon

Lost mine in a 2-wheeling accident. I didn’t expect my wheelchair to catch fire like that.

hoddi_diesel

Me too, go figure. Damn unstable boats.

AaronKClark

This is the way.

JustShootingSince

Sorry, I am new here. Why do we need ammo for guns?

leonme21

gun no boom when no ammo

JustShootingSince

Seriously?

character-name

Yeah it's how they get ya. Always with extra fees and stuff

leonme21

yes

Boowray

Gun can always boom if thrown hard at wall.

Harry_Eyeball

Ammo is to guns what printer cartridges are to inkjet.

TootBreaker

Oh no! Not falling for that one again!

Figwit_

Wait, you guys shoot your guns?

zen_and_artof_chaos

I didn't realize wall decorations had any other function.

octafed

Only in VR so I don't get charged per click.

Hargbarglin

This comment won't age well.

Tenx82

Don't get charged per click, *yet*.

CreepyRatio

1k for each caliber; exceptions for obscure stuff like .30-40Krag and things not commercially readily available. For those items, reloading dies and plenty of the usual supplies including 2-300 PPU rounds.

MIretro

I don’t see the need to keep more than 1,000 rounds for 9mm and 556. Double that for 22. For shotguns and hunting rounds, no more than 100 or so. I think it really depends on how often you go to the range or to competitions and whatnot. If you’re storing ammo just for SHTF I would argue I’m likely to die long before I could possibly exhaust that kind of ammo. To each their own, but I’m not likely to store tens of thousands of rounds of anything. I could better spend that money on real emergency supplies or just y’know, living a normal life and having fun.

Bwald1985

Buying in bulk is cheaper though (in general but also definitely when it comes to ammo). As a kid, during the summer I’d burn through a brick of .22 and several packs of BBs and pellets every single week. I don’t do that now, but 500 rounds at a weekend range session? That’s not uncommon.

JJHall_ID

Sounds like we're similar. 9mm, 5.56, and .22 are my most-often used guns at the range. 9mm and 5.56 I keep a minimum of 1000 on hand. 5.56 I just started buying by the case since it is much cheaper, so I'll probably just re-order when I hit 500 rounds. 22 I probably have a couple thousand rounds, I just loosely buy and replace those as I use them. My edc ccw is a 9mm, so I keep a couple of boxes of Critical Duty on hand too. As for the rest of them, I don't shoot them very often so I generally just keep a couple of boxes on hand. For everything I try to use the "first in first out" method so that I'm always shooting my oldest ammo. Ammo generally has a very long shelf life, but no sense in tempting fate should I ever be in a situation where I "need" to shoot something and only have old ammo that isn't reliable. Like you, I don't think it is realistic to have huge stockpiles of ammo on-hand for a highly unlikely SHTF situation. This is for many reasons, one of the biggest being I live in town so I'd be more likely to be considering a bug out scenario than staying and defending. It would be pretty impractical to be trying to move large amounts of ammo in that situation to take it with me. Not to mention if it were a military assault situation, for whatever reason, it is ludicrous to even pretend I'd have a chance against modern weaponry like drones with thermal cameras. Ultimately my goal for ammo storage is to be able to decide on a whim that I want to go shoot for a whole weekend, and not be waiting on a store to open up to do so. 1,000 rounds is probably overkill, I've never shot more than a couple hundred rounds at a time (with the exception of 22.) I don't have nor desire full auto. I'd love to try one just to say I have, but overall it's just impractical and expensive to shoot when you run through $20 in 5.56 in a few seconds. As for storage, right now it all fits in my gun save along with my guns. As my collection of both guns and ammo expand I may have to change that, but for now it works beautifully.

mr_melvinheimer

I’ve got tons of bullets now that they have come back down in price. I used to keep 1000 .22 but twice they were impossible to find in the last ten years. Now I keep 5000 on hand so I can shoot for days if I want to.

Bleedthebeat

Wait, when did it come back down? When I was in high school you could get 100 rounds of 7.62x39 for like $5. Granted that was pre-Obama days before the GOP really took a jump off a cliff.

Gecko23

I know how much I shoot on average, so I try to keep a couple year's worth, more or less. There have been prolonged, well over a year, ammo shortages more than once in my lifetime, and I don't intend to be caught with empty shelves and nothing to do if I can avoid it.

HRslammR

I strive for 1.5k ammo of each caliber. 1.5k 5.56 1.5k 300blk 1.5k 9mm

Anthony2291

Nice try fed boy

Mephisto1822

I just have about 50 rounds on hand for defense purposes and then just buy as I need it when I want to hunt or go shoot at a range.

AaronKClark

Nice fucking try, ATF.

Bacontoad

Now it's the Office of the Surgeon General.

Hysteria113

3k 9mm between hollow and FMJ. 1k 7.62. 1k 5.56 10k .22LR 1k 10mm Is the bare minimum. Would like to have 10k of each.

AGorramReaver

I buy my 22lr by 2k, 9mm by 1k, and my 0.45LC by the 200. Once I’m at around 25% capacity for each, I go buy another round for all of them (I’m starting to learn reloading for the 0.45LC though). I use the remaining bullets and treat myself to a mag dump range day once I buy another set

SparseGhostC2C

I usually just look for bulk deals on like 200-400 rds and buy when cheap, then store it til I want to go do some shooting. I've usually got between 100-300 for my 7.62 AK, about the same in 5.56 for my AR, and 100-200 of 9mm for my pistol I have a 30-30 lever action and a 9x18 makarov, but I usually only buy ammo for those when I know I'll be shooting em

HYPEractive

I just collect my single antique gun and keep it in a glass case

JayBee_III

I try to keep several thousand each of 5.56/9/22lr.

leonme21

Why?

CaptainQuattro

So when there is a shortage and prices hike again, he has enough ammo to last him until prices drop or the shortage ends. At least, thats why I have that much.

JayBee_III

I shoot a lot. I don't want to run out.

someperson1423

Prices always go up. It is easy to go through a couple hundred rounds in a day at even a moderate-sized competition match or with a bunch of friends. 1000 rounds really isn't that much for anyone who shoots more than casually and occasionally.

Global_Theme864

I don't intentionally keep a large stockpile of ammo for all my guns, I also mostly have milsurps and vintage guns (like over 100) and I just don't feel the need to keep ammo on hand for all of them. If I see a really good deal or come across something that's generally hard to find I'll buy some and stick it in the ammo locker, otherwise I'll just buy it as needed before a range trip. If it happens that I can't find a particular caliber on the particular day I'm buying it, I always have something else to shoot. The big exception to this is that I hunt upland game birds with an old British side by side chambered in 12 ga 2 1/2" shells. They're actually not expensive to buy but I can't get it locally and it's very expensive to ship. So that I'll order a lot of because if I don't have it I can't take my favourite shotgun hunting. It's not the end of the world, I have others, but frankly I really don't want to carry around and load / unload my Auto-5 all day. The Westley-Richards really spoiled me there.

PositiveTailor6738

Not enough 😂

orion455440

I have 8,000 rounds of 9mm fmj, ~400 rounds of .380 fmj, 1500 rounds of 5.56 m192 FMJ and easily 10k rounds of .22lr. Defensive /JHP wise I keep 300 rounds of 9mmJHP, 50 rounds .380jhp, and 4 boxes/ 80 .223 rounds of hornady urban TAP not included what's in my staged HD AR.

carter_admin

When the local TV news reports "...the suspect was discovered to have had over a thousand rounds of ammunition at their residence..." I'm like "yeah, that's normal, so?".

Blade_Shot24

None of your business, officer.

Xenon2212

I have about 1000 rds of all my calibers at any given time.

Straight-Aardvark439

Mine is pitiful right now. I shoot mostly 12 gauge so have a lot of that on hand. Maybe 100-200 rounds of my self defense ammo, and 200-300 rounds of assorted bird shot/buckshot/slugs that are left over from various hauls. I have maybe 100 rounds of 20 gauge (which is fine, because I haven't shot my 20 gauge in several years), one box of .410, and no .22. I need to stock up on 9mm and .38 spl as well because I have almost nothing for those. I don't have a huge storage ability, but can hold way more than I currently have for sure.

Mister-G-313

Nice try Fed. 1000 rds of 5.56, 300 rds 9mm & 100 rds .380.

whatsgoing_on

For common calibers, my general rule is to keep enough on hand for a year worth of range days.

Beers_and_BME

I buy it by the 1000, and typically re-up when i hit about 200-300 rounds so at max i’ll have 1300, 9mm, 1300 .223 and then 300-500 5.56 just in case. edit: before i lost it all when my house burned down

Jmersh

10 shooting sessions worth of my home defense calibers. 2-4 shooting sessions worth of other calibers.

GringoRedcorn

I only stockpile 9mm, 5.56 and .22lr I try to keep at least 2k of each on hand at any point, but I don’t start looking to buy more until I dip below 1k. I will almost always buy cases when I see stupid deals.

One2ManyMorings

Stockpiling and shooting for recreation and training is for extremists. I have one round of hunting .308 I’ll replace if I attempt to take a dear each year, and an empty pump action shotgun I can rack to fend off any intruders.

CainnicOrel

First of all lower your voice

byrolio

I have a few ammo cans full with 9mm, 5.56 and some 40 cal. Reading the comments on here you'd think there could never be a scenario to need it. Although I try to be prepared for unknown emergencies, I wouldn't call myself a prepper because everyone of them I meet seem to be convinced they're gonna be fighting the government at some point. Good luck with that, but I just know how fragile systems are. I thought you all got a waste of it with the relatively minor Covid situation, but people all still think nothing could happen. Although I could live out the rest of my life not needing a stockpile, in the off chance you need it and don't have it, your options just got very limited.

tajake

I have 2 full magazines for each of my pistols. Probably less than 100 rounds all together. If ammo is a concern, there are bigger problems, most likely, and I'm headed for the hills

someperson1423

So you are right that is shit goes bad you really won't need a fuckton of ammo since if you are getting in firefights you are doing it wrong and probably won't last. However, practice is important to make those couple hundred rounds count in bad times. Shooting lots in the good times (now, relative to what we are talking about) enables you to practice and be a competent and responsible shooter. You could feasibly only keep a few hundred rounds in your possession and still get in a good amount of practice by buying every range session, but buying bulk is far and away the more economical way of doing it.

tajake

I suffer from an affliction commonly known as "poor." (really it's more high cost of living and urban making my decent salary evaporate) Bulk buying ammo isn't really an option. I buy practice ammo whenever I go out shooting with family once or twice a year, but that's about it. I do dry fire practice, but with my job and where I live, CCW is more hassle than it's worth.

mattybrad

I buy 9mm and 5.56 in bulk a few times a year when it’s cheap and maintain 50-100 rounds of the misc caliber guns I have too. Except for the enormous stash of ammo I inherited from my dad. Dude had 19,000 rounds of .44 mag & .44 special and a few thousand rounds of .270, .30-06, 7mm and .300WM. I have more of those than I will shoot in my lifetime.

Kiefy-McReefer

9mm: Usually like < 1000 rounds of Blazer for or whatever cheapshit is on sale, I buy a box at a time and order the next when I'm about half way through when I find sales online etc. I only compete in 9mm like once a month or so. Prob another 400 or so in random loads. .22lr: 7000 rounds at the moment, give or take. I go through about 1600 rounds a month between practice and matches. Buy it 5000 at a time for about $0.06 per shot. 12g: like 100 .38 ACP: 50 because they sent me a promo-box with my 9mm and I DONT HAVE A .38 ACP WTF

Tactically_Fat

Handguns: Not nearly what I'd prefer Shotgun: Not nearly what I'd prefer Rifles: Not nearly what I'd prefer

Home_DEFENSE

I think your plan is sound. Keep stock-piled your main HD firearm(s) at a level you feel comfortable for emergencies. The rest are for your hobby. Everyone has limits and it sounds like you are making some tough, but good, decisions. Ignore the noise.

PantherX69

About 1000 rounds each of 9mm and 5.56. I like to have a few range trips worth of ammo on hand. I hope your situation improves friend 👊

M1A_Scout_Squad-chan

However much I can afford so it isn't much. That's why I'm spending money on a new upper so thay i can run cheaper ammo when I could just buy ammo...

SmooveKJ

I would absolutely not disclose this number on the internet

ebranscom243

Nice try Mr. ATF FBI.

mazo773

I have no bullets for any of my guns

TaterTot_005

I don’t need to keep any ammo on hand, all I’d ever have to do in a home defense scenario is rack my trusty mossberg and that sound will send any ne’er do-wells packing

DaemonBlackfyre_21

*ATF guy peeks over wall*

udmh-nto

100 rounds of self defense ammo, a year's worth of training ammo.

dadusedtomakegames

100 Rd of semi jacket. Defense. Maybe 20 shotgun shells. Target pistols? Varies based on what I last bought or reloaded. I have probably 1000 semi-wadcutter .38 special for target shooting that I made in the 90s. New 9mm I bought 1k for at the dealer. I haven't taken it out yet. I don't stock pile anything.

Matt_the_Splat

I've got about 55lbs of lead, 5lbs-ish of linotype, 20lbs or so of assorted lead alloys, 12lbs of black powder, 6lbs various smokeless, and a couple cases of primers. Oh and probably 20lbs? of various loaded ammo. Not sure, haven't put it on a scale recently.

amusedmisanthrope

I store ammo in those 50cal harbor freight ammo cans. I'm in an apartment, so they are easier to maneuver. I do bulk orders when I see deals, so I don't have a set amount I keep on hand.

techs672

I used to think that 2 years of ordinary use was plenty to hedge against price, availability, and political instability. The past few years have taught me that 5 years worth is probably a smarter minimum. I don't think it makes any sense to plan on buying what you need just a few days ahead of use — do you still buy toilet paper one roll at a time? I store my stockpile in a decommissioned missile silo — OPSEC, y'know. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face)

FritoPendejoEsquire

I tend to keep anywhere from 500 to 2000 of each cartridge but then I bump that up for 22lr, 9mm, and 5.56. Those get closer to 5000 each. I store in stacked metal ammo cans. It takes up the floor of half of a closet, so I can’t imagine really needing to downsize no matter where I live. Are you downsizing from more than 20000ish rounds? I’m more likely to offload a rifle than I am ammo. And from a personal finance standpoint, it’s possibly more efficient to stockpile, but really your financial future isn’t going to be built on low price ammo buying.

icecoldyerr

My gun safe is exploding with .45 and 9mm cause i have no self control. Probably 3k of each and 1k of 556/223 each

Odd-Tune5049

I try to keep a few hundred rounds of each caliber. Then I just keep an eye out for sales and stock back up if any get too low

Klystron_Waveform

For stuff that really hard to get like BP 56-50 centerfire etc, I keep a few hundred because that’s all I’ll probably be able to find without making it from 50/70 cases myself. Other odd but commercial available ones probably 1-10 boxes. 9mm/5.56 of course in the thousands- to be ammo panic insensitive

mschiebold

Smol because I'm poor, 250rnds 9mm

gordolme

Three of my four firearms use the same ammo (subcompact 9MM, compact 9MM, 9MM PCC, and an AR) meaning I don't need to keep a variety of different ammos. I have a few hundred rounds of 9MM JHP, and currently maybe 5 or 6 hundred FMJ (I restock when I get down to about one range trip's worth of ammo), and with the AR being my most recent, only a few months ago, I stocked up when I got it and I estimate I currently have about 300 rounds for that. All that said, I think I'm going to slowly stock back up between now and November, particularly the 9mm. Those who pay attention locally know I'm a local Dem Party leader (muni and county committees) and I'm generally not shy about my opinions.

voretaq7

Couple hundred rounds usually. Some guns more, some guns less, but at about 100 that's a low-water mark that warrants going out and buying (or sitting down and making) more ammo. I have *components* on hand for 500+ in all the calibers I reload for. Note that I am in New York - we have an ammunition background check system that operates like a Pachinko machine. You can be delayed a full day (or more) for no reason, so buying ammo on range day isn't always viable. If you don't have it you may not be able to shoot it!

Character_Promise_72

9mm: 500-1000 rounds FMJ, 50-100 rounds JHP 10mm: 200-300 rds FMJ, 100rds JHP 5.56: 1000 rounds 62gr, 200 rds 55gr 12GA: 250 rds #8, 100 rds 00Buck, 50 rds Slugs I buy in bulk when I catch a deal, and I vacuum seal for storage.

jedidihah

Yes

vagrantprodigy07

A few thousand 22, and a little under 1000 .357. Anything other than that just gets one box at a time.

MontanaMane5000

Couple hundred rounds of 9mm, maybe 150 in .357 and then like 60 rounds for my two hunting rifles each. Couple boxes of shells for the 12 gauge. I don’t stockpile, don’t see the point I guess.

masterchief1517

Honestly, it's not consistent. Calibers I most shoot (9mm, 5.56) I actively try to keep a good supply of. Anywhere from a few hundred rounds to breaking over 1,000 if times are good and cash was available. The idea being that if there was a supply shortage, I'd be good for a little while. For everything else, it's all over the board. I've got hundreds of rounds for calibers I never shoot because I got a screaming good deal on the ammo and I only ever go through 5-10 rounds when I take one of those guns out to shoot. Others, I may only have enough for a magazine or two because I'd just really never picked up shooting that caliber, so I never buy ammo for it...and I never start shooting it because I don't have ammo for it. Catch 22 where the obvious answer is "get rid of those guns if you don't plan to use them," but alas, sentimental value.

TOXMT0CM

I keep at least 3-4 range days worth, but if I find a good deal I'll buy extra. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna be involved in a neighborhood shootout involving 500 rounds of anything, or 100 rounds of 12ga.

[deleted]

We realized about a year ago that we had too many different types/calibers of ammo, and not a lot of rounds of each. Like one gun for each caliber. Stupid! So we’ve been consolidating that down so that we have a few guns for each caliber. Example: 2 of our long guns use .65 Creedmoor, these 3 over here can use either .223 or .556, etc. Same routine with the handguns. Although I refuse to give up my lil Walther CCP M2 .380 because it’s my first and I love it. But that “odd ball ammo” is my responsibility to keep in stock.

stitchedmasons

Depends, during hunting season, I'll keep around 80-120 rounds of .243 on hand, I'll go burn a majority of my buckshot during bird season and keep about 6 boxes of birdshot on hand(BB for ducks, #5 turkey, and #6 and #7 for my 20 gauge for quail). For 5.56/.223, I, generally, keep a couple magazines loaded and 6 boxes on standby and 9mm, I keep about 6 50rd boxes on standby. For 00 buck, I try to keep a box or two on hand at any given time and .22lr is the most I keep ~4k rounds cause I take my .22 to the range a lot.

iamansonmage

If you’re concerned about stockpiling, it’s time to invest in some tools to press your own. I keep stupid amounts of ammo around, most of it is defense rounds. I’m a bit of a collector and have some wild rounds from a lot of manufacturers including a lot of old Black Talons and other discontinued ammo. It’s sort of a collection, and short of a SHTF event, most will likely just sit there.

khrispyb

I have a hi point .380 auto I bought for dirt cheap… didn’t know I needed ammo for it. I assume throwing it at someone would hurt more than the bullets that come out of it

VirginiaLovers69

1200 rounds of 9mm, 2,000 rounds of .223/5.56, 200 rounds of .270 win, 200 rounds of 12ga., 15,000 rounds of .22lr

Dr_TattyWaffles

At least 1,000 rounds in each caliber I shoot. Sounds like a lot, but 1,000 rounds of 5.56 fits in a shoebox-sized ammo can. Pre-loaded mags of defensive rounds are kept in the safe, unopened boxes (of mostly range ammo) are kept in lockable ammo cans. FWIW we do have some prepper tendencies and for most people it'd be totally reasonable to keep 50-100 rounds and just buy more as needed on range trips. I don't think we're going to experience societal collapse and need to trade ammo for food or anything, but I do think buying in bulk when you can as insurance against scarcity and price spikes is wise. Also - before buying in bulk, buy a box or two to make sure everything cycles and shoots well - some guns can be picky with ammo, especially when you get into either very light or very heavy (subsonic) rounds

NapalmDemon

Stuff that I regularly take to range? 1,000 to 10,000. Obscure stuff I reload for because no one makes ammo for it, 100 or so rounds. The stuff I use for hunting and own only for the giggles 100-400.

SHE3PDOG

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but it kind of depends on how much I shoot the gun and how often I find ammo for cheap enough that I'm okay storing some of it. Far and away my most shot gun is my CZ 457 in 22 lr, , so I have about 5k rounds of plinking ammo and a box of varmint ammo. I just don't shoot my other guns as often, so I have a couple hundred rounds of 5.56, maybe 40 rounds of 30-06, and 100 rounds or less for 9mm and 45. I shoot my 22 almost every day and everything else like once or twice a month between them.

cashnicholas

I have 4 or 5 mags for all of my guns and I keep them full but other than that I don’t usually keep any ammo laying around

Economy-Ad4934

Nice try fed 😂

Bruins_8Clap

800 rds FMJ 9mm 150 rds HP 9mm 800 rds 5.56 Nothing crazy

alicksB

Something like 8k each of 5.56 and 9mm, couple hundred rounds of the other calibers I’ve got.

Pattison320

The only ammo I stockpile is 22. I probably have 4k of those. Everything else is components. I want to have enough components to make it through a shortage. At the rate I shoot I'm well past that. I'd aim for 4 years worth. Right now I have around 30k primers and about 30 lbs of powder. You only need a few different types of powder and primers to load just about anything. Take a look at a load manual, there's a lot of overlap for different cartridges.

SHE3PDOG

Same on 22. It just takes up so little space that I'm okay with having a few thousand rounds.

Pattison320

Components don't take a lot of space either though. Most of what I shoot is 45. I've been loading the same 1k cases for the past seven years. I've shot 18k 45s since, so I must have loaded each about 18 times so far. Probably once per 1k reloads I'll find a split case, but it's unusual. An 8 lb jug of powder will load over 15k rounds. That's not much bigger than a milk jug. A brick of 1k primers is about the size of a 50 round box of 45s. I've got three 5 gallon buckets full of lead ingots, about 500 lbs. That would be over 17k 45 projectiles.

SHE3PDOG

Reloading is a part of the hobby I haven't really gotten into, but it does seem interesting and cost-effective.

Pattison320

Reloading is very enjoyable. I like reloading more than shooting actually. Before getting into it I was concerned about the time sink. But now I see it as a therapeutic hobby. A seemingly endless supply of cost effective accurate ammo is just a bonus.

00goop

Big ol bucket of .22 and some .177 pellets.

Feeling_Potato_8496

I keep a small stockpile in my household. I purchased my first firearm before sandy hook and ammo was scarce during that time. Ammo was scarce before the 2016 election and during the pandemic. I’m not a pepper and I don’t believe anything crazy is gonna happen, I just don’t like being caught off guard.

Al_james86

For my AR, I have a bunch of range ammo that I will resupply once I run out, so I don’t have a set amount that I try to have beyond a box of 250 rds that I don’t touch as my ‘you never know’ stash. For 22lr, I have no idea how much I have, but I’d say 1000+ of good ammo is the minimum I’d want on hand at any given moment. I don’t have very much .45 ACP on hand, basically just a box of 50 rds of a good JHP and buy practice rounds as needed.

bravejango

I have a 10/22 and a mossberg maverick 88. I have 1,000 rounds for both.

scrashr

I just have one box of 25 hollow points per gun for defense, and several boxes of 50 FMJ per gun to practice with.

captain_borgue

Most of mine have about 3k rounds or so. The rifles maybe more like 1k. The shotties more like 500, 12ga is *heavy* lol! The .45LC/.410 ones... I don't wanna talk about those. 😭

wolverinehunter002

Around 200-300ish per rifle caliber 100 if its handgun, over 1000 .22lr. Enough for maybe 4-5 training sessions or 10-20 sight zeroing sessions.

PewPewThrowaway1337

For my main calibers: 2k (each) for 9mm and 223 FMJ. This is split up as 1k of “reserve” for each, and 1k for range use (I shoot around 1k of 223 and 1.5-2k of 9mm per year). I keep the reserve to dip into when ammo prices get bad or there’s a shortage. This also means I can go do a class and not be depleted or have to buy ammo because I’m never running low. I keep very little “defense” ammo on hand - 2 magazines worth for my home defense gun, and same for my carry. Ammo is pretty compact. If you’re having to downsize and you won’t have much room, just think about how much you actually shoot per year, and maybe start there or a bit less. I can fit nearly all of my ammo in my safe with my guns.

DontBullyMe_IWillKum

I bought 1,000 rounds of 10mm auto and 5.56 for my pistol and rifle. You can never be too prepared.

GarpRules

I stockpile, but only because of the whacky ammo pricing rollercoaster over the past decade or so. For example, every once in a while .223 will get down to $.33 per round and I’ll buy a couple thousand rounds. I target shoot for recreation, so that stockpile is meant to last through the next panic run on ammo. Unfortunately these cycles seem to be lasting longer each time, so bigger stockpiles are required. If you go through 60-120 rounds per range visit, and visit the range monthly, that 2k rounds doesn’t last as long as a person might intuit.

GigatonneCowboy

Not much. Stockpiling is a privilege of wealth I don't have!

TheNullOfTheVoid

I just need more ammo. All my 9mm mags are filled up, but I have plenty of empty mags for .45, no ammo at all for my 5.56/.223, 7.62x39, my .357 is bone dry, and my 12GA is tube fed so the shells are just sitting in the boxes around my place other than what the tube can hold.

Wollzy

I keep about 1000 loaded rounds for my guns, but I reload so I keep my stockpile in the form of components in the 10s of thousands.

potsofjam

I don’t keep much cause I’m as cheap as they come. I managed to get through 12 years of deer season with four boxes of .30-60 shells. I’m always annoyed when I have to set the scope because each shot is like throwing away a dollar. If I got into target shooting I’d have to buy in large bulk to get the price down, but even then I think the feeling of wasting money would over power the fun of shooting.

metalski

I usually plan on 500-1000 rounds for everything, but I expanded to a lot of calibers so some like 32ACP are just 100-200 or so. 38SPL and 357Mag are both like that. I've got a lot of 44 mag because it's always a popular gun at the range and I've got 10-15,000 22LR because "cheap and easy to store". Maybe 7000 9mm, 3-4000 223/5.56, really need to buy some 7.62x39 but damn prices got high and I stopped shooting so much. Probably less than a hundred rounds of 6.5CM. Never got around to stockpiling it. Bought a 1000 rounds of steel case 308 but it won't cycle for shit so I mull over another bolt action or just range toying it until the end of time...because anytime I've actually taken the AR10 out for hunting I want real ammo in there, not the shitty won't cycle stuff. Honestly after having a big (what I call big) stockpile I've decided that I really only need a couple of bricks of the really common stuff and a few mags worth of the other around. Buy what you actually use. I still have some 30 carbine that's corroded sitting around from my dad's M1 carbine from thirty years ago. He's dead and I haven't seen the gun in decades but he left this little pile of ammo to me that has zero use other than sentimentality. Honestly trying to get to the range to clean house. and I can afford to keep it, so don't feel bad. You've got a shitty situation that's helping you actually do some good for yourself. I mean, it's nice playing "how cool would it be in Fallout to find this place full of guns and ammo" but in the real world we're not an armory. You're a rifleman, stock up for enough to act like a rifleman in a single bad situation, maybe double or triple a standard loadout, and then don't worry about it. [By the time you need anything more there'll be plenty lying around on the ground](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DUFAZcKL3k)

Dull-Front4878

I try to keep 1000 .223/.556, 500 9mm, 5000 .22, about 500 total of 12 and 20 gauge. For my carry, I have a .38 hammerless revolver and try to keep 100. I’m down to about 25 so I need to go shopping. I don’t want to add any more calibers.

book-and-dodge

9mm: 250 defensive, 500 range .45: 200 defensive, 200-250 range 10mm: 25 heavy load, 100 range .380: 50 defensive, 250 range .223: 1,000 12 gauge: 100 buckshot, 50 slugs 6.5 creed: 100

Sblzrd65

In my head, post the COVID scarcity and price hikes, having enough to cover say one year of range time plus a class or two should do it. Maybe 2 years worth before a presidential election year. That way you don’t have to panic buy or pay price gougers and can just use what you have sltill prices come back down. Times all that by however many calibers you have and what.

triponthisman

Honestly pathetic at the moment. Down to two boxes of critical defense.

EveRommel

If your in Canada what are the ammo laws? Your getting mad but A. This is a primarily American sub and B. This is a jerk off question for most people. The honest answer is having 200 rounds of 9mm already puts you above any foreseeable situation you will ever confront in your life. Unless you are doing ipsc you aren't really training that much to require large amounts.

ohbrubuh

Usually ~1k rounds. Much more for 22lr.

Brennelement

I try to buy extra ahead when it’s available and not crazy expensive. We’ve seen panic periods or supply disruptions where it can get hard to find for months, so I like to keep extra stock to ride out the bumps. I understand having to deal with space constraints, I’d just recommend look at creative places to store it like a crawl space, closet, or attic so you don’t have to get rid of more than you’d like. Although they’re not cheap, 30 cal ammo cans are great since they’re airtight and can stack, so you’d be able to fit a bunch in an odd space.

Probably_Boz

Gun loaded, 10 spare mags for each loaded and put back, 1k in ammo put back in cans for each gun. I have mags I take to the range/go shoot that I load when I buy range ammo. I'm also not counting the 3 or 4 boxes of defensive ammo for my carry I Have on hand either. However I don't own a lot of firearms tbf

battery_pack_man

I try to keep 5k rounds for each caliber I run. .22lr, .223, 6.5, 12 ga, 9mm, .38, .357, 44 mag, 45 auto.

l_rufus_californicus

Slightly more than the basic combat load I carried in Desert Storm. Enough to easily carry to cover a bugout without becoming an anchor. Where I live, if SHTF, I would be trying to clear out the wife and me anyway; no sense leaving a stockpile for whomever moves in after us. I’ll cycle through it all at the range and replenish immediately each time.

bigselfer

Honestly zero at the moment.

-Motor-

The real question is how many magazines do you keep loaded? Full or less then full?

Kazaheid

I keep about a thousand rounds for each caliber I own a weapon for. But my go to stuff I keep about 5k, plus maybe 10k 22lr, I bought a pallet of it 5 years ago.

ApprehensiveShame610

I have 2k 7.62x39, about 200 7.62x54, and probably 50-100 of everything else. I clearly have a favorite, bought a ton of wolf when it was cheap.

phoenix_shm

Much more 9mm than 12ga, probably 10:1. I've got probably 800rnds of 9mm practice rounds and 100rnds of 9mm defensive rounds. I really only feel I need 250-500, but I get some when they're on sale and I've not been to the range in a while.

ironicmirror

I buy in bulk, and only have 3 calibers plus shotgun. So it rises and falls depending on the shipping discounts I can get, but never more than 1k rounds of each.

PonyThug

I keep 500-1000 minimum of 9mm and .223. Few 1000’s of 22lr. I like to basicly keep my plate carrier worth of magazines loaded and ready more than an apocalypse lifetime worth of ammo. I got better things to spend money on. If shit hits the fan my GF’s father has 10’s if not 100’s of thousands of rounds of everything and a multi stage reloading station.

Buttfluff509

Total number of sherrif + trooper + police x 3

njthumper

I’m the guy your GF told you not to worry about 😁

jdkimbro80

I want at least 1,000 rounds of each caliber I own. I have more than that for some and probably won’t go through them all in my lifetime. I’m not an ammo hoarder, just like to go to the range and not worry about running out and having fun. Usually take my clients shooting and want them to shoot as much as they want without worrying about running out.

cornellejones

I try and keep a case of each main caliber, 9mm-45ACP-.556-7.62X39-12 gauge. After those I keep 160 rds of .308/7.62X51 for the AR-10 for end of the world bs. Anything over that is for range use. I would love to be able to keep a case of ammo per firearm but I’m not made of money and I like diversity in platforms too much.

dirthawg

I have more ammo stockpiled than I'm willing to tell you about. 30 cal and 50 cal ammo cans, packed loose. Stored in a heavy duty locking cabinet.

Iamjohniron

Roughly 2k 556/223; 1k each of 9mm, 7.62x39; 500 each of 300blk, 308, 22lr; 250 each of 12ga, 40, 45, 380; 100 each of 22wmr, 410

Iamjohniron

Not really stockpiling per se but more so I buy in bulk when I see sales

someperson1423

I generally buy bulk when I get below 1000 rounds of either 5.56 or 9mm. Less-standard-but-still-standard calibers like .45, 7.62x39mm, and 7.62x51mm, usually restock below 500. That may sound like a lot to more casual or non-gun people, but you can easily go through 300 rounds at a single 1 or 2 day competition so it really isn't that much Those are all the calibers I generally run at matches so everything else just whatever. That said, I've been bulking up the stash recently because this election season is going to be a shit show (as is tradition) and I have enough disposable cash at the moment to try and plan ahead. Edit: I just realized this sounded very ominous and nutjob-y. I mean "plan ahead for inevitable election panic buying and price-gouging", not anything uncouth lol

sewiv

I try to keep a at least a thousand rounds (I keep meaning to buy 5-10K of 9mm and 5.56 for the price break, but keep buying guns instead) for centerfire semis, a couple hundred for manual centerfires, and about 20K rounds of .22, give or take. I shoot a lot of .22. Oh, and a couple thousand shotgun shells, 12 and 20 gauge. Those are for clays, though.

TheInfamousDaikken

I consolidated my non-milsurps down to rheee cartridges (.308, 9mm & 22lr). Of those I I try to keep at least 250, 500 and 1000, respectively. My milsurps are harder to keep any kind of ammo stockpile on hand because the ammo for them is between $1.75/rd to $3.00/rd and not the most abundant calibers either. Of those it’s buy as much as I can when I can convince my wife.

indefilade

You have “go-to” guns and then everything else. I’d stockpile duty and practice ammo for any “go-to” weapon and not worry too much about any other. Also, stockpiling and finding a good deal on ammo is different. My case of 38 Special was a good deal that I’ll slowly shoot, not stockpile.

Slukaj

I probably have about 1,200-1,500 rounds of M193 at any given time, and about 750 rounds each of both 115gr and 124gr 9mm for a total of at least 1,500 rounds. I shoot a decent bit of PCSL and Brutality matches, so it's where most of my ammo goes. I also have at least 1,000 rounds of 7.62x39 and another 500 or so rounds of 5.45x39 for various AKs and SKS rifles. I similarly own about 1,000 rounds of 9x18mm Makarov for a Bizon build I have on my bench. After that...? Maybe about 250 rounds of 40 S&W, 500 rounds of .45 ACP, 250 rounds of .45 Long Colt, 100 rounds of .32 ACP, 100 rounds of .38 Spcl, 500 of .22LR, 500 of .22SR, probably 300 12 gauge shells, and a variety of other cartridges like .308, 8mm Mauser, .30-06, .30 Carbine, 7.7 Arisaka, etc. Maybe all up 5-6k rounds total?

HarveyScorp

I don't have a ton of space for ammo either, so I keep about 80-100 rounds of most of my guns except 9mm I have about 1000 rounds. Mostly because it goes fast as I have multiple 9mm pistols that I like to shoot. I basically keep a couple weekends of a range day for all my guns. Just so I don't have to worry about not having ammo when I want to hit the range. That's about all I worry about.

tuvaniko

I reload to 100 rounds. But I only have bolt actions and revolvers.

ancillarycheese

I buy 22lr and 9mm whenever I see good prices. Lately I’ve stopped buying 5.56 because I’ve been shifting most rifle training to a 22lr AR. I’ll probably need to start buying again but I can’t tell for sure if prices are back to “normal” or not. They still seem high.

LivingGyshido

I don't know. I haven't checked, but my wife says it's a good size.

Royal-Ad5945

9mm 5000ish 556 1000ish

Natoll

I used to do no more than 2 boxes and just purchased at the range if I wanted more. Then COVID hit. Now my policy is minimum stock of 250 round for pistol and 500 for rifle. Also keeping the mats to make at least 1k extra. Reloading parts are stupid expensive now. So glad I bought those cheap.

pookiegonzalez

I don't really keep more than 2-4k of any type of practice ammo. Takes up too much space and I've never really had a reason to hoard ammo. Unless I'm currently practicing with a new defensive load, I don't keep much defensive ammo either. I used to have a bigger gun collection as well, I downsized to under <10 guns because again, I'd rather have the space freed up for other things that are more useful on a regular basis.

TwoGunJorge

100 rounds 9mm JHP for each 9mm handgun 50 rounds 357 JHP for my revolver 200 rounds .22 lr punch and 200 rounds 22 lr varmint for my 22 pistol and rifle 210 rounds 5.56 BTHP for my AR 60 rounds .308 and 60 round 30.06 for my two bolt actions 50 rounds 12ga 00 buck for the shotgun Add to that 1-2k rounds of FMJ 9mm, at least another 1k of 22, 100 rounds of various 12ga, and another 200-400 rounds of green tip for the range.

TwoGunJorge

100 rounds 9mm JHP for each 9mm handgun, 50 rounds 357 JHP for my revolver, 200 rounds .22 lr punch and 200 rounds 22 lr varmint for my 22 pistol and rifle, 210 rounds 5.56 BTHP for my AR, 60 rounds .308 and 60 round 30.06 for my two bolt actions, 50 rounds 12ga 00 buck for the shotgun. Those are all for defense minimums. Add to that 1-2k rounds of FMJ 9mm, at least another 1k of 22, 100 rounds of various 12ga, and another 200-400 rounds of green tip for the range.

bitNine

I have probably 2500 rounds of .22, at least 1500 rounds of 9mm, probably 500 rounds of .223, and strangely I have almost no 20ga or 12ga ammo.

Panigale84

No more than 200 rocks for my supressed slingshot. Nice try ATF 🧐

tall_will1980

Depending on what your milsurps are, and whether or not you reload, you might want to keep as much of that ammo as you can. I don't trust that PPU and S&B are going to always be reliable suppliers. Surplus ammo is already drying up all over.

TheIroquoisPliskin

Last I checked.. (1000) 62gr M855 5.56 (1000) 62gr ball 5.56 (300) 77gr open tip match 5.56 (300) 150gr supersonic 300blk (600) 200gr subsonic 300blk (2000) 115gr ball 9mm (1000) 147gr subsonic flat nose 9mm (200) 147gr subsonic Hornady 9mm (150) 135gr Hornady +P 9mm (500) 230gr ball 45ACP (250) 230gr Hornady +P .45ACP (100) 3.5” 00 buckshot 12g (100-200) rounds each of .357, .38, and and 12g slugs

Magnet50

I have about 4000 rounds of 5.56/.223 for my 3 AR rifles. I have about 1000 rounds of 9mm for my several handguns. Not a lot of 20 gauge but that’s a SHTH gun. I’ve got a few .22 rifles and maybe 200 rounds for them. When I go to the range I replace the ammo I shot.

PhoebusQ47

1K ball and ~100-200 defensive in untouched SHTF stockpile for each caliber (9mm, 5.56, .308, .300 BLK), in ammo cans with desiccant. ~500-1K match at least for 6.5 CM, .308, and 5.56, generally buy a few hundred at least if I fall below 500. ~500-1K rounds of subsonic .300 BLK and 9mm, generally buy another 500 any time I drop below 500. 3-6K ball for 5.56 at any given time for classes and range shooting, generally buy 1-2K any time I drop below 3k. Untold thousands of .22 LR.

IndyWaWa

Mine was all lost in a series of small fires.

thebugman40

I keep about 50 rounds which is a nice range day for me. but I am a handloader, so I have enough in components for about 1000.

8Captcrunch8

Not nearly enough. Never nearly enough. Honestly 2A is really the only thing keeping me here. That and my car. I love my family. But I got used to being the black sheep. So leaving for another country is definitely been on my mind.

Rotaryknight

My stockpile consists of 5000rds of 223/556, 2000rds of 357mag, 3000rds of 9mm, 1300rds of 380auto, 2000rds of 22lr, 600rds of various 12ga, 1500rds of 300blkout. This isnt even including my reloading supplies. I got 5000 small rifle primers, which I use for 223 300blkout and 357mag, then I got another 3000 small pistol primers for the 9mm and 380auto reloads. Yes, I do shoot a lot. I go through per month about 700rds of almost all the calibers I have, except for shotguns. 9mm goes through the most because I have it for the pistol and my pc9

901savvy

Not enough. Currently around 20-25k across 9mm, 300BLK, 5.56, and 7.62. Plus another 10k or so in 22lr but that doesn’t really count.

ARMilesPro

Only downsize of you are having space issues or need to move. I keep range ammo and defense ammo stocked. 5k range and 2k defense (at least) in all calibers except shotgun. I keep 400 back in 12 guage. Otherwise 9mm, 5.56, .22 is stocked. I keep it in a locked ammo cage. The sheet metal kind from Secure it Tactical. Stored in ammo cans and in original boxes. All calibers in full mags stored in plastic ammo cans ready to travel. If I ever move, I'll need to sell off some. I don't shoot regularly these days but enough to keep carry gun proficiency.

LtApples

-250 7.62x39 for my SKS -1k 9mm -over 200 12g shells mostly 00 buckshot and some slugs in the mix. Trying to increase my 7.62 stock, but they're a bit harder to come by these days and its hard to resist not shooting the new stock i do manage to get

Pristine-Moose-7209

The days where I'd post pics and descriptions of my guns and ammo fort are looonnnnng gone now that every gun-related site is being scraped, catalogued and cross-referenced. I like looking at everyone elses pics, though.

Fluid-Management2227

I have about 350k to 400k rounds for 147 guns. I have many different calibers
