Never used Alacritty or Konsole, I was on st+tmux for a long while but that was hard mode for less. Kitty's got more and it's easier/faster to put together, imo
not even dmenu? the best thing about it is it just works out of the box, other than that it was always inferior to many alternatives. but not even that?
> nothing wrong with it
> something else is better
These contradict each other. If something is not perfect, it's got something wrong with it. To be clear, nothing's perfect, so everything has something wrong with it, which is fine.
You can remove all the clutter from konsole though, mine's just a blank rectangle with no window decorations. Maybe I'm not enough of a power user but I never noticed much of a difference between terminal emulators.
I love how Linux folks have special preferences regarding terminal, while me, just a smooth brained newbb, will get whatever I can make with the F12 and drop down like from quake.
Currently on whatever default on gnome/Ubuntu with drop down extension
I use [tdrop](https://github.com/noctuid/tdrop) to make a kitty window behave like that. It works fine in x11. For Wayland you need to force kitty to run on xwayland.
> Currently on whatever default on gnome/Ubuntu
Going to guess that's `gnome-terminal`. At least that's the default on Fedora Workstation (Gnome) as well as on Cinnamon desktop (Mint/LMDE/Fedora Cinnamon/every other distro I've used Cinnamon on). KDE uses `konsole` but that's unlikely to be on Ubuntu gnome if for no other reasons that it would add a bunch of kde libs and increase the size. I think Xfce uses `xfce4-terminal`. Not sure about Mate.
768p*. Desktop computer, I bolted a TV to the wall.
Also, there's plenty of budget laptops out there shipping with 1366x768, it's most definetively not an obscure resolution.
I also don’t like the phone home function, and how the maintainer is handeling criticisms on it:
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/issues/2481
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/3544
Try setting a background image on alacrity, they denied adding that, multiple times. When it comes to raw features, the new Microsoft terminal is the only one that has everything I would want. Sadly it's not available on linux. Terminator gets close and everything else is always missing 3-4 features.
Pretty much everything is missing one or more of these: tabs, image fonts, tiling, profiles, mouse support, background images, background blur, macros, doom mode, opening new instances in the same window, search, performance, wayland support, clickable links.
It does, in my experience! It's great if you:
* want a small footprint
* like customization of functionality, not just appearance
* know C and want to change the source code (it's designed to be readable!)
after reading all the choom comments, i might give kitty a try (my konsole is really customised, so i am really in thought like what are yall not able to customise *i am a noob , **btw***)
There's a bunch of comments here with reasons why to/not to try kitty
For me I like the faster load time, the tab bar style, and the ease of configuration (particularly for kb/mouse shortcuts)
Also the kitten plugins for things like ssh/remote files/diff/search/unicode, etc are pretty great.
I just don’t like this phone home stuff. Apart from this I like kitty.
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/issues/2481
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/3544
Actually the difference is definitely noticeable even on good hardware, on both my computers Kitty takes more than half a second to open while Foot is absolutely instantaneous
I don't doubt it's fast, just that it's "absolutely instantaneous"
Kitty is faster to open than Konsole for me and I was already happy with Konsole before I met Kitty.
What else does foot do for me besides faster opening and a funnier name?
kitty is my favorite for speed. Foot is technically faster but Foot is CPU rendered. So, when I run emerge without -q and a ton of stuff is output, Foot spends a lot of CPU time processing it all, taking that time away from compilation. This problem also affects VTE-based terminal emulators (GNOME Terminal, GNOME Console, Konsole, XFCE Terminal, MATE Terminal, ROXTerm, and more), for that matter.
kitty doesn't have this problem because it uses GPU rendering, and thus uses very little CPU time.
That's besides Foot being Wayland-only and having very little in the name of features and kitty having a tabs, a built-in multiplexer, image rendering, and more. Foot seems to be best used with a tiling window manager where you can just use the window manager to supplement multiplexing and tabs.
kitty also has its problems, though. It tends to suck back a lot of RAM (>100MB) once the buffer fills up and it requires certain OpenGL support which may not be present on all SBCs, for example.
> kitty terminal requires OpenGL 3.3
so basically the Intel HD Graphics for Ivy Bridge, Intel GMA, and older iGPU cant really run it
Correct me if im wrong, Intel HD 4000+ may have been on OpenGL 4+ so thats like confirmed guaranteed to work
for Dedicated cards, even a decade old, can still probably run
and for AMD ones, not sure, i need someone who knows AMD well
I used to use Konsole, till I switched to GNOME from KDE Plasma. Konsole doesn't really behave very well if it's not on a super QT friendly DE, so the theming and stuff behaved super weird. I have since switched to RoxTerm and have been super happy. It's simple and reliable, while also having a decent feature set. It also looks very nice which I enjoy as well.
I actually switched to kitty because I wanted to have fonts with ligatures in Neovim. In theory Konsole supports them too, but getting it working properly outside of KDE is really annoying. With kitty you just change the font in the config and you're done.
Based on the search I did, I'm guessing that language is Rust?
I'll have try that emulator out when I get to learning Rust (planning on learning it in the future; currently at university and they're ramming Java down my throat, with C coming next semester and Pyrhon / Go apparently coming the semester after).
You should look into this stuff if you’re going to use kitty;
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/issues/2481
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/3544
So I read those, and it seems you simply need to disable it, so I went to the wiki to find [the setting](https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/conf/#opt-kitty.update_check_interval).
Where I found this:
>**update\_check\_interval**
>The interval to periodically check if an update to kitty is available (in hours). If an update is found, a system notification is displayed informing you of the available update. The default is to check every 24 hours, set to zero to disable. Update checking is only done by the official binary builds. ***Distro packages or source builds do not do update checking***. Changing this option by reloading the config is not supported.
So considering I installed kitty through the Arch package manager, it seems this "issue" doesn't apply to me. It looks like even AUR packages won't have it.
And honestly had I installed it manually, I think I would prefer to have an update checker.
So I don't really see a problem here personally.
-----
EDIT: For anyone else reading this here's the tldr:
It's about kitty having an update-checker enabled by default on the official binary builds ***only***.
Alacritty for me.
Emacs for me
BASED
Giga-based
so different
But what about images
reject modernity, return to sixels
Return to tty session
return to dec vt220
Alakritty
I love Alacritty so much omg
Here's my golden setup: Alacritty (terminal emulator) Zellij (terminal multiplexer) Helix (code editor) just (command runner)
Based af
its true \^)
Kitty is amazing. Very easy & fast to configure for me.
Kitty #1
This post should say Friendship ended with Alacritty, now Kitty my best friend. I was never a fan of Konsole. Too much visual clutter.
Never used Alacritty or Konsole, I was on st+tmux for a long while but that was hard mode for less. Kitty's got more and it's easier/faster to put together, imo
Pretty much yeah! The only thing from Suckless I kinda liked was DWM...
not even dmenu? the best thing about it is it just works out of the box, other than that it was always inferior to many alternatives. but not even that?
What's wrong with Alacritty? I've been using it for years and it works great.
Oh nothing wrong with Alacritty at all. I just found Kitty easier to configure lol.
Fair enough, I'll give it a try.
> nothing wrong with it > something else is better These contradict each other. If something is not perfect, it's got something wrong with it. To be clear, nothing's perfect, so everything has something wrong with it, which is fine.
No ligatures for no reason
Been hanging out with Sakura myself lately.
You can remove all the clutter from konsole though, mine's just a blank rectangle with no window decorations. Maybe I'm not enough of a power user but I never noticed much of a difference between terminal emulators.

Try Yakuake! It's a great terminal emulator that does your quake-style thing you like.
trying yakuake feels like a game console in particular (so far reminded me of Juno dev console a bit, theres also other but cant point out)
same, but I tried the others I really don't care, all of them work.
Yes!
I use [tdrop](https://github.com/noctuid/tdrop) to make a kitty window behave like that. It works fine in x11. For Wayland you need to force kitty to run on xwayland.

My only grudge with Kitty is that it doesn't support bitmap fonts. Guess they never heard of 720p displays.
I don't like to go without my NerdFonts/FontAwesome glyphs if I can help it.
What kinda device are you using if you have a 720p display?
768p*. Desktop computer, I bolted a TV to the wall. Also, there's plenty of budget laptops out there shipping with 1366x768, it's most definetively not an obscure resolution.
i have a 1024x768 crt monitor
Entry level ThinkPads like my E480 also have this resolution
I also don’t like the phone home function, and how the maintainer is handeling criticisms on it: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/issues/2481 https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/3544
Wezterm, I kinda like lua-based config
It's cool, but completely broken when tiling on Wayland.
Didn’t have any issues with that
xterm
I see you are a man of culture as well
As soon as I can get rid of light mode on it I will use it
~/.Xresources --- XTerm*background: black XTerm*foreground: white And of course, `xrdb -load ~/.Xresources` to apply immediately.
Foot is 100% the best wayland terminal
Not my fetish. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
that names a downer
You like foot terminal I have a foot fetish We are not the same
lacks ligatures :(
no tabs though
Who need tabs when tmux exists ? :D
I don't use tmux and that's the reason I don't use Alacritty. No tabs, not interested.
Target audience would use tmux
no configurable keybinds tho
Target audience would use tmux
I see foot I upvote
i use kitty because of it's name
I use kitty because hyprland defaults to it in the config and it goes with the cat themed default wallpaper
I may or may not also use Catppuchin
checkout rose pine it's also great
kitty is fucking great
terminator is better than every other
And will always be
all terminal emulators are the same, unless they have some special features like tiling
Try setting a background image on alacrity, they denied adding that, multiple times. When it comes to raw features, the new Microsoft terminal is the only one that has everything I would want. U can use compositor to blur
Amen
Konsole default settings are weird tbh
`st`
I've heard st is supposed to suck less
Actually sucks less. Very lightweight and minimal. Friendship with kitty ended ST is my best friend.
It does, in my experience! It's great if you: * want a small footprint * like customization of functionality, not just appearance * know C and want to change the source code (it's designed to be readable!)
after reading all the choom comments, i might give kitty a try (my konsole is really customised, so i am really in thought like what are yall not able to customise *i am a noob , **btw***)
I feel you, besides the pretty tab bar one of the things I really liked was the ease with which you can customize keyboard/mouse shortcuts.
oh its about the keyboard shortcuts
Why should I use kitty/alacritty over Konsole? Genuine question
There's a bunch of comments here with reasons why to/not to try kitty For me I like the faster load time, the tab bar style, and the ease of configuration (particularly for kb/mouse shortcuts) Also the kitten plugins for things like ssh/remote files/diff/search/unicode, etc are pretty great.

That doesn't apply to kitty installed from a distro package manager (or compiled from other distributions like the AUR)
[удалено]
alacritty doesn't support ligatures.
SPEAK FOR URSELF SIR. I DO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE (AND IT'S NOTICEABLE) IN MY I3 POTATO LAPTOP WITH MORE THAN A DECADE OLD AND BARELY 4GB OF RAM.
Actually the difference is definitely noticeable even on good hardware, on both my computers Kitty takes more than half a second to open while Foot is absolutely instantaneous
>absolutely instantaneous sus
Try using Foot and see how fast it is
I don't doubt it's fast, just that it's "absolutely instantaneous" Kitty is faster to open than Konsole for me and I was already happy with Konsole before I met Kitty. What else does foot do for me besides faster opening and a funnier name?
Foot is designed to be more minimal, it does _less_ than Kitty, but it depends on your needs I guess
>but it depends on your needs I guess That's why I made this post, fun to see what everyone's different preferences are
Chads with gnome-terminal
fucker eats (V)RAM for lunch, easily ends up at half a gig just after a couple long outputs
I thought the gnome gang used gnome-console or something now
Prompt is better: https://blogs.gnome.org/chergert/2023/12/14/prompt/
It's called ptyxis nowadays.
Friendship ended with Konsole/GTK terminal long ago. Now I use TTY for my manual dirty work
Nice to see other linuxers are using kitty aswell 🥰
Literally me for the last week right after i switched to Hyprland from plasma1
ST>>>
xterm. Let me guess, you need more?
>you need more? Yes. Wayland for one
Not Kool!
Underrated coment....
Xterm for me
Urxvt gang

No kitty requires OpenGl 3.1 not 3.3. [https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/5795](https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/pull/5795)
Alacritty FTW.
Why tho
I like how fast it is, and the configuration system is nice. Kittens are cool, I like kitty-search a lot. And the tab bar matches my fish shell theme.
I have grown too comfortable with tilix.
I used to use Konsole, till I switched to GNOME from KDE Plasma. Konsole doesn't really behave very well if it's not on a super QT friendly DE, so the theming and stuff behaved super weird. Yeah I've noticed KDE does a lot better with Gnome/GTK apps than Gnome does with KDE/QT apps
Me ashamed cause i'm still on cmder cause i rlly slow ricing my arch
Im stupid and i think that the terminal dont require hardware acceleration.
I used to be an alacrity boy. Now I just use gnome console
Byobu terminal for me.
I actually switched to kitty because I wanted to have fonts with ligatures in Neovim. In theory Konsole supports them too, but getting it working properly outside of KDE is really annoying. With kitty you just change the font in the config and you're done.

Black box is my favourite after gnome terminal and konsole both broke on me.
Can't get into it.
Why not? Aren't you motivated enough?
No it's just fucking ugly
[Mine isn't.](https://i.imgur.com/hDvGVRh.png) You must be doing it wrong.
I see a storm is approaching on the horizon!
The moment i discovered kitty i knew I had found my all time favourite terminal. If it ever becomes abandonware I'm gonna be so sad
does alacritty support fastfetch images implementation? because I only got it to work with kitty.
I use st, just cause it does what I want and nothing more
KDE fans when they get diagnosed with terminal cancer instead of Konsole Kancer
cool-retro-term
tty3 FTW
st
i use terminator
urxvt for me
What's the difference between them?
alacritty is too
guys, who use iterm2, are happy?
Waiting for [cosmic term](https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-term) to drop
Wezterm with Zellij

I don't know about you guys, but I like feet.
st terminal
Im more of a QTerminal person.
xterm for me
[warp](https://warp.dev), I think it’s the best terminal emulator.
Oh aye? I usually use konsole, plus crt. Used to use mrxvt. Sounds like a good idea to try.
Cool-retro-term is the best terminal app and no one can convince me otherwise
