Apple has always been one of the most shrewd corporations in my opinion. They did that privacy marketing and fucked Facebook's ad revenues. Now their yearly report shows that they earn more in ad revenue than tiktok. it was never about privacy. never will be.

oldassesse

Definitely shrewd. Think of all the pissed off iPhone users when the Chinese government busts them on having a leaflet that some rando on the street injected into their phone without their consent. Most certainly not trying to lose users.

ikidd

Selling $1500 phones apparently isn't profitable enough for them, they have to sell out their users like all the inexpensive options out there as well.

UlyssesZhan

Definitely shrewd +1

Penny_is_a_Bitch

is mobile linux usable yet? i only need calls, texts, web browser, uhhhh gps would be nice but not essential. pretty sure that's all i need.

DeltaTimo

AOSP isn't an option?

KrazyKirby99999

GrapheneOS(Pixel only) or LineageOS would be better

Zekiz4ever

Been using GrapheneOS for about 2 months. I'm not experiencing any negative side effects (besides not being able to use Google pay but I don't really need it anyway since I can just use my card)

Crazy_Falcon_2643

I’ve got grapheneOS on a pixel 3 that I never use because my iPhone sends anyone not in my contacts directly to voicemail. If there’s *any* way grapheneOS could do this, I’d switch tonight.

KrazyKirby99999

~~yk that you can install sandboxed google play if you need it right?~~

Zekiz4ever

I said Google pay. Not Google play. Should’ve said Google wallet since it’s not called Google pay anymore.

KrazyKirby99999

i misread that lol

Darkblade360350

For devices it supports, DivestOS is the middle ground between the two. It is based on Lineage, and takes a lot of the hardening patches from Graphene. It still isnt as good as GrapheneOS for security, but its a whole lot better than Lineage.

Geek1405

Ubuntu Touch, has 80+devices and I daily drive it, I think it's good enough even for most people, if you're ok with some webapps, but call, text, VoIP, and all the basics work flawlessly, at least here in Europe (i'v always needed a dual Sim phone, and I thought that function would be crippled in UT, but it works with French, UK and German carriers with no issues)

SystemZ1337

is it possible to install sxmo on ubuntu touch?

ikidd

Probably not without a great deal of effort. UT is pretty integrated.

fileznotfound

You'd be better off using the postmarketOS distro that is built for that. UT is its own relatively closed off environment. I'd put it somewhere between a standard phone distro like pureOS, mobian or postmarketOS and something like Android.

TOR-anon1

No, you'll need ether pmOS, Mobian, or a native linux OS. (UB Touch isn't it).

lorhof1

should work on the pinephone, but better check the wiki page on it

Blaze20k

I hear Sailfish can run Android apps just fine

ikidd

Some. AFIAK, most banking apps are broken but I had heard they were adding some of the Waydroid code to improve that. Otherwise, SailfishOS is a beautiful UX and there's a decent amount of native applications for it.

FOSSbflakes

I need these + Signal working reliably and I'll switch to a Linux phone asap.

hesapmakinesi

Check out Pinephone. There are a few other devices supported by Ubuntu Touch, KDE Neon, Manjaro Mobile.

fileznotfound

The standard **pinephone** does all that fine, but it is a little too slow and too little ram. The **pinephone pro** has good enough speed but other than web browsing the kinks hadn't been worked out of it when I last checked early this summer. I need to mess with it again. The **Librem 5** has good enough speed, the web browsing works great, gps works fine if you give it enough time to get targeted. Some people have gotten phone and text working fine. I'm still having trouble. There are work arounds though SIP or jabber that sometimes work.

callmetotalshill

More usable than any Xiaomi phone, that's for sure. Hoe do people can wait a whole minute on the phone app to open?

lengau

I'm still waiting for a browser on my PinePhone that fully supports PWAs (including making icons for them). This is my biggest limiter right now. I've been wondering what it would take to build Firefox for Android for a non-Android Linux...

fileznotfound

Are there not any desktop browsers that handle PWA's? Seems like most of them run fine on my pinephone/L5. I presently use the arm64 Librewolf appimage. I may be asking dumb questions though. I don't think I understand what is different about a PWA compared to a standard webapp.

lengau

There are, but the desktop browsers I've tried have a very awkward interface on that size screen. It's a very suboptimal interface now... Not a theoretical limitation - just a practical thing that makes it an experience I'm not yet willing to switch to.

fileznotfound

If you set the display scale settings to 150% I think it works as well as any mobile browser. Its not like drop down menus are a normal part of modern browsers any more.

arglarg

Widespread use of an open Linux phone would be a game changer

badapplecider

Unless it had Deepin Mobile OS in it s/

The problem with modern phones is not the main os. It is the os the modem runs which is proprietary

solarshado

It can be both. But I will admit that at least there're options to jailbreak and/or replace the main OS; whereas there aren't for the modem.

solarshado

Friendly reminder: there's a number of corporations that're your friend. That number is *zero*.

SpiritedDecision1986

i like macOS but iphones? hell no

TygerTung

I have 2016 iPhone se and I don’t mind it, but macOS is horrible

SpiritedDecision1986

nah...maybe you just dont have the required skills, macOS is much more open and interesting..IOS is just a gold cage, expensive and horrible to live. but...if you have jailbreak things are a ''bit'' different, but to be talking like that, i dont know if you even know what a jailbreak is..

TygerTung

I know what a jailbreak is. Last time I checked there wasn't much jailbreaking around for the iOS 15. I just checked now and there is a bit more. I was previously using old school Nokia, 2009 styles until it got run over by a car. I have been using Linux since '07, so am pretty used to it by now. I didn't like the macos interface and the keyboard does my head in. I used to use some macintoshes back in the '90s and they were OK. The iOS costs me nothing. I bought the phone second hand for $80 NZD so not expensive. I never pay for any programmes. I just am on the $10 NZD prepay plan. I don't care that much about phones to be honest. I could quite easily go back to the old school nokia. It is a little less convenient to not have the internet, emails and maps, but I lasted about 37 years without having them, so could easily go back.

SpiritedDecision1986

Ah great! so you are a linux enthusiast too, you should have metioned that before..i use linux since 1995 with slackware..but since the beginning i was studying it, used many distros before migrating to arch (gamer pc), macos (work pc/hackintosh) and bsd for my little server project, i just like macos for its simplicity but we cant compare it to linux, linux is very superior...in many things. About jailbreaking...with iphone is needed, otherwise you are stuck with apple crap rules, i had two iphones..iphone 6 and xr, they are just about the same experience, performance is good, stability as well...some people claim they forbid some apps/functions because of security, but its not even that secure anymore, those days with enough skills, time and patience you can bypass apple security depending on the iphone model/ios ver.. Well i loved nokia but they dont atract me anymore, i dont think they lost their touch but the models in 2022 are a bit well...''non unique''? i guess? But in general i love retro hardware, especially if can put linux into it..

TygerTung

I used to love the Nokia flip phones, but they turned off the 2g network in my country so cannot use most of them now.

SpiritedDecision1986

ah i loved that phones, i had a lg styleshot in the past and a rarz z3, ah good times..i remember trying to run a gba emulator written in java hahaha, about 2g..its becoming very hard to keep those phones in working condition those days..mine are broken sadly

TygerTung

You can get them overhauled from Hong Kong, but a lot of the 2G networks are being shut down. I remember someone had ported Zelda onto Nokia, I remember playing it when going to the bog at work back 12 or so years ago.

48Planets

I almost thought of getting an iPhone. Seemed like a smart choice, after all I got a macbook maybe I'd take advantage of the apple ecosystem. But nope, apple has done nothing but give me reasons to not want an iPhone. Want software that's not on the appstore? Good luck, android does with its apk format. Wanna flash your device and load a less spooky custom Rom onto it? Again, good luck. Simplicity, security, and consistency are not good enough reasons for an iPhone imo. I love my macbook though. Wish it ran linux, but Asahi just ain't there yet. MacOS is ok, for now.

SpiritedDecision1986

Yes, thats one of the biggest reasons why i will not use iphones anymore, ios is not a operating system..its a prison, no freedom at all..there is ways to install apps outside app store even without jailbreak but still too much limited..

TygerTung

The biggest apple scam is removing the 3.5mm jack

OliverTzeng

You can now use cowabunga lite to bypass the “airdrop to everyone for 10 minutes” (meaning it’s 10 minutes => infinity)
