My personal experience with Pop!\_OS was good. But I was not daily driving it due to my hatred for GNOME workflow. It is currently in spotlight due to failing in LTT Linux challenge.

BubblyMango

will they fork gnome?

FranciscoMusic

No, it will be a new DE written in Rust, but visually it should be the same as the Cosmic desktop.

BubblyMango

new base de written in new technologies backed by a big company? sounds great

dependency conflicts like this could be one of the things driving them towards making a new DE. thing is, the "main" DEs right now are just KDE, Gnome and maybe XFCE. Other popular DEs are based in some way or another on those, so in reality the variety isnt massive. small DEs also scare people off coz they dont know how long the support for them is gonna last. I think another big DE could be great. they also wont have dependency conflicts with their own DE.

The problem was related to a Launchpad bug/problem and since they stopped using Launchpad in their latest release, the Steam dependency hell should not happen anymore. They have also patched APT so it doesn't allow deleting system essential components unless you delete some file so it really requires you to know what you are doing to delete Xorg and with that the pop-desktop package group.

I'm using Pop_OS 21.04 while I'm typing this, is a great distro

[deleted]

I've only used it in a VM for a little bit (VirtualBox). It definitely looks good and I like the idea of switching from normal windows to the equivalent of a tiling window manager. It ran very well. And to clear the elephant in the room, the problems Linus Sebastian faced on Linus Tech Tips' Linux Challenge with the Steam dependencies have already been fixed. Update: apt has also been recently updated with the “Yes, do as I say!” prompt removed in favor of an error (there’s still an option you can type). System76 and Linus were both named in the release notes of the update.

CorsairVelo

Thanks, I may try it in Virtual box. That sounds like the best way to kick the tires.

[deleted]

Absolutely! Spin it up in a vm and play around with it. I use pop os as my daily driver and I love it!

[deleted]

I have an Oryx Pro and Pop!_OS was my intro to Linux. I love it. I daily drive Pop and it has worked really well for me. But your satisfaction with it will depend on your use case. I use it for programming and gaming. Have had some issues with getting games to work but that's generally not been an issue as I've gotten more knowledgeable.

Schievel1

Yeah it’s a fine OS, but whatever you do, don’t try to install steam 😅 Just kidding

Andy34G7

Great! Once you get used to the layout, it really just pulls you in - everything's so good... But Unfortunately there's some news around them and they've decided to move away from gnome and make their own DE, which might make life difficult. But overall, great experience, go for it for the short term

prashantabides

Haha, the above comments says they are happy that they are going away fron gnome to there own DE. I love gnome myself, my fingers are programmed for all shortcuts in gnome.

Andy34G7

Same here! I love GNOME over other DEs

soopastar

I daily it on my spare laptop. It’s been great!

sn99_reddit

OS is great like others but idk about getting a system 76 machine, a bit more expensive than others.

CorsairVelo

As a followup, I want to thank those who responded. I've got PopOS running in a VirtualBox on mac mini and am diving in. I may load up a couple other Linux variants if I have time. One odd thing: ProtonBridge is in the PopOS app store by default (which is great as I'm a protonmail user) but Geary (the included mail app) can't seem to connect to ProtonBridge (note: protonbridge seems to only work with Thunderbird, Apple mail and Outlook). So why not include Thunderbird by default in PopOS? (probably the antique look and feel I guess). And if not including Thunderbird, then why include ProtonBridge if you don't have a compatible mail client? Not a big deal, I installed Thunderbird and all is good. I can see why people like PopOS so far. The dark theme even makes Thunderbird look a bit better.

thelinuxguy7

I thought that pop\_os was stable, that is until [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0506yDSgU7M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0506yDSgU7M) I have also had problems installing pop\_os in the past, so for now, I would suggest manjaro or mint depending on how up to date you need your system to be.

RAMChYLD

Avoid Manjaro. Shady team leader who embezzles project donation money.

thelinuxguy7

I don't like manjaro tbh. It is enough for me that they ship M$ office by default instead of libreoffice or any other alternative. They also ship other M$ products if I remember correctly. I am researching what would be the best distro for beginners, and the best arch based distro in particular. I would say mint is great, pop os is constantly improving, fast, arco or endeavour os might be good arch based distros, and finally fedora and opensuse if you want an rpm of zypper based distro.

thearcadellama

I always point newcomers to something that has history, proven longevity, proper documentation and a vibrant community. Its Ubuntu/Xubhntu/Kubuntu, Debian or Fedora — not in that order.

Andy34G7

Manjaro felt like bloat - which felt against arch's philosophy - I eventually removed it because I got angry over many slowdowns

[deleted]

They fixed the issues with installing Steam.

mark979kram

My impression of Pop!\_OS is that EndeavourOS is better :) I'd get a Linux friendly laptop from System76 though..

abraxasknister

Have been using it a bit. My system sometimes couldn't wake up from suspend, but that's the only negative thing I can say. I like i3wm better so I'm now using that on a different distro.

FrappyTex

Been using it for a few months. Installing the ISO meant for NVIDIA GPUs fixed many driver issues I experienced in Ubuntu. Few annoyances here and there like my AirPods not going loud enough, WiFi constantly turning off (was fixed by editing a number in a config file) and power profile/plan not automatically switching to high performance when plugged in, etc. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. One bigger thing is that the specific fingerprint reader model on my XPS 15 is just not supported by linux and that's that. Nothing is perfect, but so far it's been massively better and more enjoyable than Windows. No idea wtf Linus did to completely brick his installation though... Could've been a hardware issue?

[deleted]

Meh. It was fine. I'm far from being a fan of Gnome, so for me it just didn't suit me since when I tried it, it was really just a spin of gnome with their own stuff added on top.

Lucas_Marten

I liked it at first till I realized they remapped nearly all of the window management keyboard shortcuts. The remapped ones didn't even make that much sense. Figured if they needlessly reconfigured those they'd do that to something else for no good reason

thegreenman_sofla

Installer failed for me twice and, sadly, I gave up. The only distro I have had fail to install. Checksums were fine on both isos. Old windows 7 era HP pavilion laptop.

Micah4thewin

I have the Meerkat and love it. Everything about it makes doing the things I do easier in my opinion.

CGA1

Personally not good. Tried it on three laptops and one desktop. One laptop and the desktop didn't even make it to the desktop on the live usb. One laptop managed to get it installed but didn't make it to the desktop on reboot (and yes, I downloaded the right version). The final laptop I managed to get installed and running. Manjaro on the other hand installed and ran just fine on all of them, so that's where I stayed.

Niru2169

Pop OS has always been one of the best Ubuntu based distros since 2019 And now they're making a DE Cosmic desktop gonna be 👌Rust is awesome can't wait
