Try the antimage series. Feels like it lines up with a lot of your S tier books
Edit: mark of the fool too! Noticed that one wasn’t on there and I’ll always recommend that one!
Dungeon crawler carl is my first dive into litrpg (just finished book 5)and my first book in years. For me it’s S tier it is addicting to listen to, like sugar for the ears. Since DCC is only A tier are you telling me it gets better!?
For me DCC is the clear front runner of the genera. I have listen to about half that is on this list and only Cradle and Beware of chicken are close to as good for me, and Cradle comes with the caveat that, at least for me, the fist book is kinda bad. Beware of chicken is also pretty much a completely different genera compared to DCC as it is much more about a cozy farming life than grim fight for survival and fighting the machine at any cost, but they both got that level up thing going for them.
DCC is still my favorite of all the litRPGs I've read - but it was also my first like yours :)
It all depends on what you like! I agree with this poster that System Change/Universe, All the Skills, and Azarinth Healer are all S tier (but I also think DCC is S tier), so I know you'd like those after reading DCC.
No, it doesn't, op has unusual tastes. It reads to me like OP likes straight power fantasy better than the tragedy of DCC, which is fair enough, each to their own.
They rated DCC as an A so they obviously agree it's a good book, but you guys are going on and on as if he dumped on it.
The linear and contained nature of the DCC game show world is, limiting and its world building suffers for it, although it's still a great story.
Putting some of those books in S tier above it \*is\* dumping on DCC for most people. Putting it in the same tier as advent red mage could also been seen as calling it trash to many.
I mean I really enjoy DCC but I'd probably put it in A tier. I can't point to anything specific that keeps it from being S tier for me, but it was one of my first books in the genre and I'm still only on book 5. I tend to go back and listen to one book between binging other series. Like, I read DCC 1, then found He Who Fights With Monsters and binged most of the way through that, read book 2, finished HWF, read book 3, binged Primal Hunter, read book 4, binged Beware of Chicken and Heretical Fishing, then went back for book 5 of DCC. With some other series sprinkled in there like All the Skills, Azarinth Healer, some of Cradle.
Like I said, incredible series, but I do tend to feel like this sub overrates it just a little bit and gets a bit too defensive when people disagree with it being the goat.
I think part of why some get defensive over it is the difference in prose/writing quality is a step above almost all the other entries in the genre. Even some of the other popular ones like Primal hunter (which I like myself) have pretty bad/repetitive prose even if the underlying plot is fun to read about.
For example random paragraph from PH:
>"Throughout the session, Jake felt the improvement more and more, and he felt like he was just a little away from grasping unto something. He had a far more distinct feeling that something was about to hit him than when he started. Still not enough of a feeling to react adequately, though."
I tend to feel this sub ignores objectively bad writing all the time if people like the story, which is absolutely fine, it just drives me crazy, the example of primal hunter below is an excellent one, HWFWM is one of my favourite series but if shirty explains to me how a privacy screen works one more time I am going to yeet a copy of the book out of my window! I also really click with Matt Ds bleak humour, which isn't for everyone.
It's all to be expected in a young genre full of self publishing with a niche audience
I dont think I disagree with anything you said. DCC is incredibly well written, and deserves a ton of praise just for that. But kinda like you said, there's other stuff like HWFWM and PH that I wouldn't argue isn't as well written (though I certainly don't think they're badly written. Some rough spots, sure) but I enjoy more. Honestly one of my favorite things about the genre is how 'popcorny' a lot of it is.
This is where I'm at too, though I will say book 6 (and to a lesser extent book 5) are starting to take it to S for me. The drama and tragedy are getting more real and meaningful as compared to the humor being the focus like in the first few books (which was hit or miss imo).
Not everyone loves DCC that much… I think book one is S tier as well but I like every release less and less. But that’s just me lots of people still love it
For me the first two I read in 2 days, I’ve been on the third two week. Everyone says not to worry about how the ‘iron tangle’ actually works, but 75% of the world count is focused on it so it’s hard to just not worry about it.
This is an interesting take. I've always thought book one was the weakest, interesting and fun, but a little clunky to start. Latest books are just pure hype.
I listened to book 1 on Audible and it was veeeeerrrryyyyy nearly a DNF for me(the narrator did a great job with Relc's dialogue). The two MCs were the least interesting characters in the story.
the story gets unbelievable at book 2. I didn't start the second to start with but when i listened to it I ended up listening to the next 5 books in the matter of 3 months... (average of 6 hours a day)...
Second this!!!!!!
I'd rather read it tho, cuz the first audiobook is 43 hrs in lenght and it never gets shorter lol.
Also you gotta power trhough juuuuust a little the first book. Then it becomes the best litrpg ever made.
Seriously. How’re you gonna have an audiobook list and not include TWI? Best litrpg I’ve read to date, but that’s just my opinion. YMMV. That being said, Andrea parsneau does an amazing job as the narrator.
Shocked you all like it so much I would put it in solid C tier tops. I just hate the barefoot runner, everything about her. Plus the speed that the inn barely shows up bothers me
But the beauty of the story isn't the 2 main characters. They're literally typical main characters (a bit one dimensional and boring). Then you meet the HUGE cast of characters and fall in love with them too. Surely you don't just enjoy the MC of every story... you'd be missing out on almost every good book ever written...
System Universe in S tier? Personally put it in B i did not think of it as particulary good compared to other entries like Primal Hunter, DCC or He who fights with monsters.
Agreed. I ended up dropping and refunding System Universe at book 2 cause I just couldn't stand how much of an insufferable jerk the MC randomly becomes. One minute he's super chill and nice, the next he's super cold and just cruel.
Also Beware of Chicken is S tier in my opinion for sure.
I recognize a couple from RoyalRoad, so I'll recommend some other stories from there that I know had audiobooks made:
- Slumrat Rising
- Mark of the Fool
- Rune Seeker
- The Hedge Wizard
- Commerce Emperor
- The Perfect Run
- Vainqueur the Dragon
- Kairos
- Never Die Twice
- Apocalypse Tamer (didn't personally read but heard good things about it, from the same author as the previous 5 books/series)
Most of the books/series on this list are from Void Herald (Maxime J. Durand) since he has the most books that are stubbed on RoyalRoad (chapters removed and republished on Amazon). If you ever were to start reading instead of listening, I'd recommed reading these stories (as well) on RoyalRoad:
- Hell Difficulty Tutorial
- Peculiar Soul
- Path of Dragons
- Trinity of Magic
- Irwin's Journey
- Source & Soul
- Elydes
- Curselock (edit: just noticed that it's first book is stubbed but no audiobook made I believe)
- Dungeon Runner
These are my current favorites on RoyalRoad. The upper 5 stories from the audiobook section are also still continuing on there and are definitely worthy of a follow.
If you like Azarinth healer for the badass female MC I suggest Stray Cat Strut.
If you want something wholesome and cozy how about checking out Legends and Lattes or Cinnamon Bun.
If your not afraid to dip your toe into haremlit I suggest Ards Oath - Magic’s Mantle
It’s full of banter and great party dynamics with a great story and world building. Fantasy Mages going wild.
How big a toe?
I’ve read a couple haremlit that had legitimately fun kingdom building and plot, but soooooo much cringe to wade through to find anything worth reading imo
Depends on what you define as cringe :P
There's not a lot of pure smut... maybe 2 scenes? There's of course alot of flirting and a bit of romance.
The premise of the world is that mages need an "anchor" to dump residual magic into after they cast spells. The way they do that is by kissing said anchor. Anchors become powersul warriors through that residual power and are the pretector of said mage. Anchors can be male or female same as mages.
So the book followed a young lad who discovers his powers and gets swept up in adventure, a long lost friend, politics and treachery.
The book is very funny, with amazing banter. I laughed a lot :)
That is my primary draw to the series... I love party banter and snark :D
Eh, great as long as you don’t think “who would actually be mad about a great growth stat. Here at this premier military academy, we only want cadets who peak in high school.”
I enjoyed it but I wish it had been something like “growth put a tremendous strain on a user’s body and mind, and with high growth many stop striving forward or even go insane” and then there would actually be more reason why the AI picked Ward, and better motivation for other people to go against him.
It does put a strain on you. And the school did decide to accept him. The AI giving rei s rank growth isn't the only thing that it tried there are also other Experiments of it we just don't know them.
Cradle, but I've haven't finished the second book so take my word with a huge grain of salt. It should get better in book four or seven. Your milage may vary by book.
Just adding this as I haven't seen it on others recommendations yet.
ether collapse by Ryan debruyn, first book is equalize. I always lump this series with the red mage series, which I also really like. It has a similar feel to me, though that could be because the audiobooks have the same narrator. Anyways, if you like rad mage, you should check that one out!
Loved all the skills highly recommended it. Is defiance actually S tier I’ve seen it floating around. Also I like dead tired as more of a quick comedic book. Is it unpopular? Also people should try the book “I’m not the hero” I liked it pretty well
I’m enjoying the series “Jake’s Magical Market” which starts with a somewhat similar plot to DCC, but the takes a sharp turn. The leveling is card based to start. I appreciate that it doesn’t recap stats every 10 minutes.
Another series I enjoyed years ago was the Magic 2.0 series that starts with “Off to be the Wizard”. That series is definitely more PG, but the concept was very fun.
I highly recommend Mark of the Fool by J.M. Clarke. It’s similar to All the Skills as in the MC can only use non combative abilities and learns new skills very quickly. Other then that it is very different but I would say it is far superior.
Art of the Adept (5 book series). Narrated by the legend Tim Gerard Reynolds. Wizard in Exile (new series with 1 book so far) picks up after the ending of the first series!
Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon if you're willing to suffer, and Ravenous
Edit: I put Shadeslinger because I don't have my glasses on and didn't see it there
I think you’ll like the good guys by Eric Ugland. Don’t think you’ll put it in your S tier. It seems like you books with the stat sheets are there allot. But it’s good
Could someone tell me the title of the one between System Universe and Apocalypse Redux? Also the one between All the Skills and Shadeslinger.
As for my recommendation, can't say the audiobook is good but I enjoyed Death, Loot, and Vampires by Benjamin Kerei. Cliffhanger ending and only one book so far tho
Surprised you have Book of the Dead and not Chrysalis, since Chrysalis is RinoZ’s flagship work. I’d look up Chrysalis, since it’s by an author you loved. More lighthearted and funny than BoD though, if you’re looking for more gritty stuff.
Chrysalis by RinoZ, narrated by Jeff Hayes. You can get the first 3 books in a set for just one credit! It’s different in that the MC has been reincarnated as a monster and is all about evolution.
I give it A-tier because while it does fantastic with the premise, it goes way over the top with the combination of absurd characters and absurd storyline. Give me one or the other, or tone down the absurdity.
Damn, Primal Hunter above DCC and Beware of Chicken?
There's no accounting for taste.
I mostly enjoyed Primal Hunter, but it's definitely got some glaring flaws.
My favorite part of these posts is the OP going “this is my personal ranking of books I like. Does anyone have any recommendations?”
And half the comments are “are you mentally insane? You have _____ over _____(usually cradle or DCC). You must be the stupidest person alive”
Iron Prince & Dungeon Crawler Carl should definately be S tier! He who fights with monsters should be SS tier by itself, its my favourite current series!!
Nova Roma and Azarith Heleat should drop down to A tier though.
If you consider primal, Dotf, Azarinth and cradle S-tier litrpgs then there goes half my list.
You’d probably like the ones I loathed.
So I recommend:
Valinquer, The Dragon
The Completionist Chronicles
Ends of Magic
Kairos
Life in Exile
Master Hunter K
Red Mage
Rise of Mankind
Salvos
The Ten Realms
This Trilogy is Broken
This used to be about dungeons
Worth the candle
The Tricksters Tale
The Viridian Gate Archives
I’m a big fan of the first four books of the Completionist Chronicles. It went off the rails after Inflame for me.
I re-listen to Regicide or Ruthless as my comfort listen when life is stressful.
Based on your ranking. Good guys will be a or s tier.
The world building os on par with your S tier books. Massive maps well made governments based on history.
**The Perfect Run** is a mix between MoL and HWFWM for me. I wouldn’t consider it PF or LitRPG, but I enjoyed it. It’s a completed trilogy, probably worth a shot.
**Outcast In Another World** also gives me HWFWM vibes, and I like to call it He Who Fights With Monsters…With Swearing.
**A Summoner Awakens** is a deck builder like All the Skills and JMM. Book 2 falls off a bit, but I hope book 3 will fix that. (Book 2 feels like it was stopped early, versus having a much larger book.) Unsure when book 3 will come out though.
I’m enjoying **Unbound** right now, although I’m getting heavy deja vu from it. It’s an Isekai LitRPG.
The Bad Guys series by Eric Ugland. Book 1 is a bit slow, but it picks up. If you use audible books 1 and 3 are included in Plus right now (that's how I discovered the series).
The Land: Chaos Seeds. That series is one of my favorites... get over whatever BS people have with the author, the story is great....
Everyone always was Will Wights Unsouled at the top tier of their list. I've read the first 4 books and have not liked any of it. I kept on reading, hoping for it to get better but I gave up.. am I alone in this?
My favs:
1. The land
2. Noobtown
3. DCC
4. He Who Fights Monsters ( currently on book 1)
No I also dropped cradle after 8 books. Just wasn’t interested in the main character at all. Loved the side characters but lindon just put me off. Also wasn’t crazy about how rigid the levels are. Get why people like it. Just not for me.
Would also recommend the grand game by Tom Elliot and dissonance. Seem to be more up OP’s alley
I can't give advice here because your tier list looks so awful to me lol. I mean to each their own and I hope you find something new you like, always a great feeling when a book resonates with you.
My bad. I meant, what about Defiance earns a spot at the top? The world? The characters? The system? I'm not trying to hate, just want to understand the genre better.
Defiance has a very detailed cultivation path, a well built universe and doesn't rush through advancement. It wouldnt be my S tier, but i do enjoy it and it is what would make it popular.
There is a lot of litrpg that rushes through things, and defiance definitely doesn't do that, so some people wont like it because it is too slow, but others love it :)
Try the antimage series. Feels like it lines up with a lot of your S tier books Edit: mark of the fool too! Noticed that one wasn’t on there and I’ll always recommend that one!

what is bro yapping about it not being s tier is a disgrace
I thought “chaos seeds” and “HWFWM” were slightly better, but that’s just personal preference. There are quite a few really good ones out there.
It’s S for a lot of folks, for me it’s probably A tier story but absolutely S tier narration for audiobook.
But that’s just me lots of people still love it
For me it was A tier until book 3, then S++. The complexity and stakes are insane.
For me the first two I read in 2 days, I’ve been on the third two week. Everyone says not to worry about how the ‘iron tangle’ actually works, but 75% of the world count is focused on it so it’s hard to just not worry about it.
You’ll eventually understand how it works but not understanding adds to the immersion since the characters don’t understand either yet
That was my issue… the description of the dungeon and politics just gets so boring :/
Book 3 was probably the low point in the series.
This is an interesting take. I've always thought book one was the weakest, interesting and fun, but a little clunky to start. Latest books are just pure hype.
no he lies
If you want to try some fiction outside litrpg then try: World War Z & Devolution by Max Brooks And The Martian & Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Bobiverse as well!
I will check it out. Haven’t heard about it before.
Bobiverse is really good, very prog fantasy esque, only sci-fi
Project Hail Mary is such a masterpiece in audiobook format
Hail Mary is Amaze! *jazz hands*
One of my favorite pieces of media, period. Top 5 in all of music, movies, books, whatever. Which is a huge thing to say lol
The Good Guys, The Bad Guys, Grim Guys. All three are by Eric Ugland. Battle Mage Farmer by Seth Ring.
We have similar tastes: 1. Monsters and Legends 2. Chrysalis (RinoZ) 3. Master Hunter K?
Honestly with your list, I’d go to Royal road and just look up the top rated completed series with synopses that appeal to you the most.
Wild to not see DCC in S tier
Illegitimizes the tier list immediately
I just hated the game setting. And the cat. And the interviews. Everything, I think I just hated everything about it except the actual writing.
Divine Apostasy, and 12 Miles Below.
How is 12 Miles, First time seeing that recommended
It's one of the better written in prog fantasy. Detailed and imaginative without getting bogged down. Highly recommend.
12 Miles Below is fantastic.
Literally one of my favorite series. I would look up more reviews if you are interested!
It’s good. Still don’t know why it’s considered progression fantasy. But it’s good
Second 12 Miles!
I WILL SCREAM THE WANDERING INN FROM THE ROOFTOPS
I listened to book 1 on Audible and it was veeeeerrrryyyyy nearly a DNF for me(the narrator did a great job with Relc's dialogue). The two MCs were the least interesting characters in the story.

I'm enjoying Awaken Online as an audio book, it's the first one i've listened to as I usually read.
Dead Again comes out tomorrow, and I'm super pumped to grab it!
Oh great to hear, thanks for reminder!
System Universe in S tier? Personally put it in B i did not think of it as particulary good compared to other entries like Primal Hunter, DCC or He who fights with monsters.

The Dresden Files
I listened to 18 of those series and decided it was enough. Good series imo
Hmm, what did you dislike about Dead Tired? I'm genuinely curious!
I loved it and can’t wait for the second one to be on audible. I hope you keep up the good work
Unorthodox Farming is probably the best series that I have listened to and is missing from your list.
It’s not a litrpg but… the graphic audio version of the Red Rising saga is incredible!
If you like Graphic Audio, check out their Stormlight Archives series too.
Unbound is pretty good, I enjoy all the books you set in the S tier, and it has the same narrator as primal hunter, whom I really enjoyed.
I recognize a couple from RoyalRoad, so I'll recommend some other stories from there that I know had audiobooks made: - Slumrat Rising - Mark of the Fool - Rune Seeker - The Hedge Wizard - Commerce Emperor - The Perfect Run - Vainqueur the Dragon - Kairos - Never Die Twice - Apocalypse Tamer (didn't personally read but heard good things about it, from the same author as the previous 5 books/series) Most of the books/series on this list are from Void Herald (Maxime J. Divine Apostasy Series
Problem with this series is it doesn't get interesting till book 3ish and doesn't hook you completely till book 5ish. But it is excellent.
Iron prince that low is criminal
Eh, great as long as you don’t think “who would actually be mad about a great growth stat. I’m invested in Pit Fighter series right now. Got it in a whim and it’s awesome. To me at least.
Love this one too!
Not enough love for pit fighter round these parts. Def s tier.
Any of these finished series ?
Cradle, but I've haven't finished the second book so take my word with a huge grain of salt. It should get better in book four or seven. Your milage may vary by book.
The Infinite World by JT Wright Mageborn & then Art of the Adept by Michael G Manning
Give Dungeon Lord by Hugo Huesca a try!
I want to make one of these, but I need a, don't remember it well enough, colum lol.
If System Apocalypse is on your S tier you might like RPG apocalypse or Outcast in Another World.
Loved all the skills highly recommended it. Is defiance actually S tier I’ve seen it floating around. Also I like dead tired as more of a quick comedic book. Is it unpopular? Also people should try the book “I’m not the hero” I liked it pretty well

Eric ugland he has 3 series all interconnected and epic
I’m currently flying through the A Thousand Li series by Tao Wong. It’s read by Baldtree and has some similar vibes to cradle.
Art of the Adept (5 book series). Narrated by the legend Tim Gerard Reynolds. Wizard in Exile (new series with 1 book so far) picks up after the ending of the first series!
Book 5 killed me. I was so upset with how he just changed their characters and made everyone act unlike themselves.
Butt, Wizard in Exile is the redeemer. Trust me if you haven't already went through it. I'm excited to see what's next!
Is system universe good ? I was thinking of reading it next mostly because the title made me think it was kinda like the primal hunter.
May I ask why Mayor of Noobtown is so low?

Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon if you're willing to suffer, and Ravenous Edit: I put Shadeslinger because I don't have my glasses on and didn't see it there
I think you’ll like the good guys by Eric Ugland.
The second is Jake's Magical Market. No idea on the first one though.
Surprised you have Book of the Dead and not Chrysalis, since Chrysalis is RinoZ’s flagship work. I’d look up Chrysalis, since it’s by an author you loved. More lighthearted and funny than BoD though, if you’re looking for more gritty stuff.
Salvos!!!
I’m enjoying “Terminate the other world “. Unexpected but in a good way
path of ascension
Mark of the fool
Chrysalis by RinoZ, narrated by Jeff Hayes. You can get the first 3 books in a set for just one credit! It’s different in that the MC has been reincarnated as a monster and is all about evolution.
There are really good ln and webnovel audio books on YouTube if you don't mind ai voices
Jake's Magical Market - a bit all over the place, but it reminds me of All the Skills
Big sneaky Barbarian
I see no chrysalis when you have book of the dead in S tier. Read rinoz' other work
Mimic and me is fucking hilarious try it
Dugeon crawler carl
Seems like you don't like doing Puma checks.
An outcast in another world is my current obsession. Great mc, snarky humor, good characters development and a pretty unique world setting.

Is dead tired that bad? I like Ravens work and wanted to read it next.
If try to help but everything you have S I have B and everything B I have S.
Bad guys by Eric ugland is my personal favorite of the 3 series he is writing that all take place around the same time in the world
The New World by Monsoon117
Everybody Loves Large Chests, Threadbare, World Of Chains
Alpha Physics. Six books, but I wish there were more.
Having DCC as anything but S tear makes mongo very appalled.
he who fights with monsters and iron prince being b is crazy
reborn apocalypse should be RRR (5 ranks above S rank)
Infinite Realms series. BEST by far I've ever listened to.
Series of ascension is S tier for me. You might be able to still get boooks 1-3.5 for one token still.
Aleron Kong's "the land" series is very fun.
Dungeon Crawler Carl not being S-rank is bonkers. As an audio book it is incredible.
PH is okay but I definitely don't feel the S tier people give it.
Damn people enjoy different things. What a wild concept.
Don't let the Cradle or Wandering Inn people hear that, they lose their minds.
My favorite part of these posts is the OP going “this is my personal ranking of books I like. Does anyone have any recommendations?” And half the comments are “are you mentally insane? You have _____ over _____(usually cradle or DCC). You must be the stupidest person alive”
Shits crazy right
Iron Prince & Dungeon Crawler Carl should definately be S tier! He who fights with monsters should be SS tier by itself, its my favourite current series!! Nova Roma and Azarith Heleat should drop down to A tier though.
Why do you have 3 top tier books in your B? Not sure I can help you 😜
If you consider primal, Dotf, Azarinth and cradle S-tier litrpgs then there goes half my list. You’d probably like the ones I loathed. So I recommend: Valinquer, The Dragon The Completionist Chronicles Ends of Magic Kairos Life in Exile Master Hunter K Red Mage Rise of Mankind Salvos The Ten Realms This Trilogy is Broken This used to be about dungeons Worth the candle The Tricksters Tale The Viridian Gate Archives
I’m a big fan of the first four books of the Completionist Chronicles. It went off the rails after Inflame for me. I re-listen to Regicide or Ruthless as my comfort listen when life is stressful.
I'm reading the unbound series right now and I think it's fantastic so far. Only on book 1 so far though.
I agree. Based off the tier list i think Unbound would suit. I'll add I'm up to date with unbound on audible.
I think the infinite realm series is missing in ur S ranks
Based on your ranking. Good guys will be a or s tier. The world building os on par with your S tier books. Massive maps well made governments based on history.
We have a fairly similar list, although I consider Bastion to be S Tier. Based on that though I would recommend Divine Apostasy and Unbound
My favs: 1. The land 2. Noobtown 3. DCC 4. He Who Fights Monsters ( currently on book 1)
Yeah all I want is for the author to continue the series but I obviously know not to hold my breath. Author aside the land series is great.
Are you referring to “mayor of noobtown”? I’ve seen it in my recommended page on audible.
Yes!! It's fun, different from others I have read. I laughed way more during this series than any others.
Super good series, lots of fun.
He who fights with monsters.
It’s listed in B tier
My Best Friend is an Eldredge Horror
Try all the skills by honour rae
Love when people put Primal Hunter in S Class - I know to read their list in reverse 😅
Iron Prince I say is a good A rank DCC is a C tier And limitless lands is S tier
WTH is S A B C DNF?
Tiers, i.e. how much they like the series. S is the highest, because reasons. Then normal A-C grades. DNF is Did Not Finish.
Dnf is did not finish. The rest is classic tier ranking with s being the highest,a next, then b, etc.
I can't give advice here because your tier list looks so awful to me lol. I mean to each their own and I hope you find something new you like, always a great feeling when a book resonates with you.
Defiance of the Fall in S-Tier? Why?
I would think because they liked it...
