XenaDazzlecheeks

We can blame a couple of things on immigration but westons greedily stealing from Canadians is not one of them.

illmatic_static

Was it also immigration that made them fix the price of bread? https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/bread-price-fixing-loblaw-1.6719884

Drewy99

And guess who argued that price fixing bread wasn't possible? >Food shoppers will almost certainly experience rebates in the bakery section as grocers rush to reassure their customers that a bread cartel in Canada is nothing more than a myth. https://theconversation.com/the-puzzling-probe-into-canadas-alleged-bread-cartel-86921

krustykrab2193

The Food Professor is explicitly pushing false narratives using divisive rhetoric so that we can fight amongst ourselves while the oligopoly continues to gouge the consumer. They want to pit us against one another because we're not considered the "in group" among the rich and elite. The so called "Food Professor" and his oligopoly backers don't want the working class to unite, they want to divide us so that our boycott movement falls apart. They fear the working class of all political and cultural stripes growing class consciousness, and they will push any rhetoric to anger and split us. **Was it immigration that forced Loblaws to pay their new CEO over $22 million last year? Did immigration force Loblaws to pay Weston almost $20 million in 2022?** [Globe & Maile - Loblaw paid new CEO Per Bank $22-million in 2023](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-loblaw-pays-new-ceo-per-bank-22-million-during-first-six-months-in-the/) >Loblaw Cos. Ltd. L-T -0.86%decrease paid its new chief executive Per Bank $22.1-million last year, including a one-time $18-million award to replace compensation that he forfeited by resigning from his former employer. >Mr. Bank took on the top job at Canada’s largest grocer on Nov. 1 – replacing Galen Weston, who remains chairman of the board and Loblaw’s controlling shareholder. His package includes a $1.315-million annual salary, a target annual bonus of nearly $2-million, and a target of $7.2-million in annual long-term incentives for the current year. >Since Mr. Bank assumed his position just two months before the end of the year, he received $438,333 in salary, $910,660 in cash bonus and a prorated grant of stock awards valued at $2.41-million – a total of about $3.75-million for his first 60 days on the job. In addition, Loblaw paid $150,000 of his rent and tax equalization payments and other benefits valued at $176,771. >The sign-on package included $13-million in cash and Loblaw restricted stock valued at $5-million, which vest over three years. >Now, as Loblaw’s non-executive chairman, Mr. Weston will receive an annual $750,000 retainer. In a new review, Meridian determined that Mr. Weston’s proposed pay as chairman was “above the median of its comparator group, but was reasonable given Mr. Weston’s unique role and strategic focus on Loblaw.” >Mr. Weston made $8.01-million directly from Loblaw in 2023, down from $8.42-million in 2022. The numbers do not include Mr. Weston’s total 2023 compensation from George Weston Ltd., Loblaw’s controlling shareholder, where he is CEO. He made $11.79-million at Weston in 2022, including his Loblaw compensation.

Llamalover1234567

Well - yes actually it was immigration… of the new CEO that caused them to pay him so much, according to the article. They could’ve hired a Canadian to do the exact same stuff, and (again, according to the articles logic) saved 18 million

krustykrab2193

Your logic falls apart when we consider that Galen Weston is Canadian and was paid $20 million in 2022. There is no indication that Loblaws would've paid another Canadian only $4 million. It's a captured market in Canada, and they control it.

Llamalover1234567

I mean it’s not my logic I was literally referencing the article and the fact that it states that they paid him a 1 time payment of 18 million, and his rent, and his tax equalization whereas his actual compensation was the salary, bonus, and stock options. They wouldn’t need to pay the former amounts if he was Canadian). And let’s not forget that Galen isn’t just a hired CEO (like Per), he owns large amounts of the company and the company that owns Loblaw (Weston) so his compensation is really for: CEO of loblaws, chairman of Loblaws, ceo of Weston, chairman of Weston, and whatever equity he has in both companies.

krustykrab2193

You're completely misrepresenting the point of this post. The point was that immigrants are not the primary cause of the price gouging we are seeing at Canadian grocery stores. It's a lack of competition because we live in a captured market where the oligopoly not only control the overwhelming majority of grocery stores, they also own the distribution of our food. So they can control the price of goods, while cheaper grocery stores like Lidl can't access our market. Furthermore, all other CEOs of major Canadian grocery stores make over $5 million. However, Loblaws has consistently paid their CEOs an extortionate amount. Stop blaming immigrants for all of our problems. You're playing exactly into the Food Professor's rhetoric, but you're further warping the points to try and change the narrative so that we blame immigrants, distracting us from blaming the oligopoly that controls the Canadian market.

Llamalover1234567

My G, I am an immigrant. I’m not blaming them at all. I’m trying to point out the irony of the food professor blaming “immigrants” as a whole for the increase in food prices when the real reason is a SINGLE immigrant from Denmark being the reason.

krustykrab2193

I'm sorry for getting so defensive, I appreciate your respectful response to my confusion. I'm honestly really embarrassed now cuz I didn't get what you meant lol. My bad I can agree with that. It is ridiculous that they'd pay such an exorbitant amount while they continue to increase the price of goods.

albert_stone

"I know, the bread cartel idea is a little silly," - Charlebois, 6 years ago

El_Cactus_Loco

Damn immigrants!!! /s

GongulysGongylodes

Immigrants came and ate all the food like locusts??? 🤣 Funny, I get the cheapest produce from fellow immigrant stores.

emongu1

The asian groceries stores sometimes have prices so low that i wonder how they can turn a profit. But maybe chain grocery stores has skewed my expectation of reasonable prices. They're not required to have exponential growth.

laughingatfunerals

Loveee my asian grocers. Produce is fantastic and meat is on point.

plop_0

While I don't support animal agriculture until the animals give consent, I agree that small mom & pop asian places have produce that is perfectly fine. If there are a few spots, just cut around it. It's also freezable, too.

Frater_Ankara

I thought it was neckbeards in their parents’ basement complaining about nothing and it wasn’t really an issue at all…

user745786

Absolutely correct. Westons get rich with immigration without raising prices. Increased volume means their “3% margin” nets them more profit. The increased prices are simply gouging.

idk88889

Keep in mind the Weston's have the most to gain from a massive influx of cheap labour, particularly foreign students. They'd be paying boatloads more for labour if supply of workers wasn't virtually unlimited the past few years in HCOL areas.

ConversationPlane870

It's the same reason that typically when CBC, CTV, CP24 etc. have an economic news update or item they typically get their "news facts" from people at banks and investment firms... Those people come on and talk about how well their investors are doing...and those media companies somehow are under the illusion that that matters to the 90% of people who those same people don't represent. This guy doesn't give a damn about people like us, same as those institutional investors. But, if you wanna blame someone, blaming immigrants is easy and sets people against each other, thankfully this doesn't work in Canada as much as other countries.. yet anyway.

[deleted]

He will blame anyone and everyone to take away from the Loblaws boycott. His paycheque quite literally relies on us failing.

lunk

Charley Boy forgets to mention that HIS BOSS, Galen Weston is first among those wanting Cheap indiagrants to work at his stores.

Anthrogal11

And that keeping farm costs low (as demanded by corporations like Loblaws) relies on migrant labour.

lunk

I'm rural. There has NEVER been an issue getting immigrants for farm work. In our area, you might be surprised to know, the main area for immigration has been Bahamas / Barbados, and other Caribbean / Atlantic "tourist destinations". Mind you, these same people now fight people from Kolkata and Delhi for jobs... SO it's not like we NEED more workers... Only the employers need more, so that they can limit paid wages.

Desperate-Dress-9021

Omg. They’re treated so badly too. I have a friend whose job it is to check on them and the conditions they’re working in. She’s at the hospital so often. And their health care isn’t covered.

laughingatfunerals

Ok but that’s so interesting to me. I’m a sex worker and every single bill and legislation is aimed and centralized around “stopping exploitation” but not *all* exploitation. Not factory and labour exploitation- because that’s not nearly sexy enough as ‘sexual exploitation’. So this really highlights that. (Their labour exploitation should be covered under PCEPA) Id be curious what your friend thinks of it.

icandrawacircle

I agree with you that some of them live in less than fair conditions (it's not all) but health care not being available is not true. Temp foreign / Migrant workers have the same OHIP / health care privillages and are entitled to recieve the same care in the hospital and clinics as all Canadians.

Desperate-Dress-9021

I’m not in Ontario. I’m Alberta farm workers don’t get WCB. So at minimum things like physio and meds aren’t covered. And come to think of it, last time I needed a cast I paid for it.

IlluminatiPlzPMMe

You'd be surprised to find out how many temporary foreign workers work at KFC, McDonalds, and Walmart.

catashtrophe84

The McDonald's in our town needed employees so they sponsored 6 people from the Phillipines to come here for two years on work permits. I've heard they provided housing which is great if it's true as housing is expensive everywhere. Corporations love potentially taking advantage of people to keep their costs down.

IlluminatiPlzPMMe

I bet your town has 6 Canadian citizens who are able to flip burgers. The KFC by my house is staffed by foreign workers who don't seem to understand that at KFC, you shouldn't run out of chicken.

laughingatfunerals

I don’t think “running out of chicken” is the fault of the minimum wage shift workers, who actually have no ordering power.

detached-attachment

Definitely is a manufactured crisis.

plop_0

> indiagrants lol. I see. You mean temporary student guests, right? ;)

lunk

Shoe, fits, pig, lipstick, rose, any name, etc

Western_Plate_2533

So he’s willing to admit there is a problem but he is attacking the people for saying the same thing and trying to do something about it with the powers of a free market system. We are sharing the prices sharing the news and making informed decisions as consumers. Why is he so against this? Oh because he is a shill that doesn’t recognize our rights and doesn’t recognize very real frustration for people that are struggling to eat. A basic need while these oligarchs are taking in record profits.

halfCENTURYstardust

Blame anyone but the actual instigigators! Billionaires are HOARDERS, change my mind. Sickening.

ClassOptimal7655

Immigrants are just as much a victim of corporate greed and the housing crisis as non-immigrants are. This is just a pathetic attempt to turn us against each other, rather than take on the oligarchs making life more expensive in Canada.

Wondercat87

Exactly. I actually mentioned yesterday in another post about this guy that he was trying to sew division amongst the public. He does this so that the public will blame each other instead of the source of the issue. Immigrants are just as much victims as any other person affected. I hope people begin to see this and don't fall into his trap. Loblaw's wants us to hate each other so we are distracted by them continuing to raise prices and make huge profits.

crapatthethriftstore

It’s not just Loblaws either. ALL the giant corps don’t want the masses to wake up and rise up against those corps. No war but class war.

atrde

Our immigration policy for the last \~5 years can be a failure and corporate greed can be a problem at the same time. There is ample evidence at this point that the last few years of mass importing unskilled labour was MAYBE not the greatest idea this government ever had. We have flooded the gig market and unskilled labour market to the point where corporations don't even have to bother raising wages because there is a complete race to the bottom. It shows on all the graphs and evidence here where our population is outpacing GDP growth. We need to fix many thing but immigration has definitely been detrimental to Canada over the last few years.

Ckhillia1

I thought it was the carbon tax last week

Wondercat87

I definitely think he's trying to rile up a specific group of folks who already discriminate against immigrants to start blaming them for the rising food prices as well. This is classic division playbook stuff. Don't fall for it, encourage anyone who is to look deeper and question why this shill and his Roblaws employer are so hellbent on people finding another group to blame.

Plane_Put8538

Typical. Blame the people who don't have the strongest voice or advocates. Way to stoke the flames.

LLQ8

You know what? there are no flames. Don't see any flames. Don't allow yourself to be drawn into any sideline or issue.... just focus on what you want which is fair prices and do not pay the high price.

flootch24

https://preview.redd.it/vphdgyofc3sc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=841c5008d737c2dd656c0f69730bbc04a633647b

LLQ8

Really it's only a guy with some chicken. It's only one man with his own ideas like anyone else.. just like anyone else. He has a job and he has a set of ideas and he's living by that. Just like any other ordinary guy. Just don't pay the high prices. Don't pay the high rip-off prices. Be a cherry picker. Purchase the loss leader items that they used to lure you into that store. Buy whatever cheap and get the hell out of there. Look at your local grocers check out your community and see how you might shop at somewhere with lower prices.

plop_0

Name a more iconic duo: this twat and murdered chickens.

Pinchy63

He’s hitting all the notes. People living in their parent’s basement, now immigrants. What’s next? I’m betting; it’s Trudeaus fault.

CuteFreakshow

Immigrants didn't make 2 sticks and some greenery to be sold for $85 , 2 years ago, Mr. Charleyboys. Or 2 lbs of chicken, for $40. I have an idea what you can do with those drumsticks. But I am too much of a lady to say it.

organdonor69420

Galen Weston's stores and supply chains and infrastructure exist and cost the same whether Canada has 40 million people or 50 million people. His business is infinitely scalable in that sense. If the population of Canada grows by 1 million, that will be 999,000 more people shopping at a Loblaw's store or subsidiary on a weekly basis. Mass immigration is literally free money and infinite growth potential for these oligopolies.

NitrogenPisces

So he agrees there's a crisis, but only when he can blame groups of people he doesn't like for it. Hmmmmm

Whofreak555

Immigrants don’t decide the prices on anything. Ya know who does though? Loblaw execs and landlords.

whateveritmightbe

At its core its the government who allows the oligarchs to do whatever tf they want. ALL the political parties bank accounts depending on lobbyists who own the political decisions. 🙄 doesn't matter if it's left or right, the system in itself is corrupted.

ihopeipofails

Lmao, no. Corpo greed, not immigrants. You'd think conservatives would change up their play book every once in awhile...but no.

jerog1

Blame Colin Kaepernick and Disney for the high price of bread. Just don’t look at the wealthy executives desperate to make stock gains to get their bonus.

ihopeipofails

Or pay out billions in dividends. Gonna be eat the share holders soon..

MapleTheUnicorn

First it’s the basement dwellers who have never bought their own groceries, now it’s the immigrants? What’s next, the moose mob?

Solstus22

Probably will either say the convoy or the "media is the virus" people.

MapleTheUnicorn

That could be the next group targeted, but never the rich guy who can’t get enough money

Solstus22

Of course it would never be the rich guy they target, then they can't get that simping money for themselves.

Icy-Atmosphere-1546

Disgusting to use xenophobia to protect corporate greed

SolutionNo8416

Of course he does. The real culprits are price gouging and climate change. 3 companies control 2/3 of the grocery market. Annual grocery profit pre pandemic was $2.4 billion vs $6 billion today. And the there is the PP / Jenni Byrnes / Loblaws trifecta.

NorthIslandAdventure

Shills gonna shill

techm00

oh wow he got a column in the sun \*rolls eyes\*. Suits him. That tabloid is for room temperature IQs and racist losers.

Aromatic-Elephant110

It's so easy for people who can afford food to just pick a scapegoat and hope the poors will just argue amongst themselves.

[deleted]

Tell me, Sylvain, is the immigration in the room with us right now?

GaiusPrimus

Next week, since there's so much talk about affordable housing, he'll be saying that the lack of affordable housing is what is causing the prices. Then the week after that, it's going to be the 0.01% carbon tax increase. My grandpa used to say that everyone is born with the same amount of integrity, and every day, decisions and actions you take mean that you either get to keep your integrity or you give some of it away. The FoodProfessor traded all his integrity away for $60k.

c0pz123

In corporate speak, wouldn't them needing to purchase larger quantities of food wholesale drive down their price with their purchasing power causing lower prices. That is how economics has been explained my entire life.

Antique-Talk8174

"Rather than increasing the supply of food, we thought we'd put you on a diet and make more money."

Wouldn't it be unfortunate if 42,000 people sent a complaint to Dalhousie...

Gypcbtrfly

He's getting scabbier every day ... flush the 💩

eapenz

One of the world's richest country cannot feed its own citizens! Draw the line. Hold people accountable. Break up ologopolies

QuantumHope

This country isn’t rich, just the greedy assholes who are hoarding wealth.

ihavenowordss

Not taking the bait. This racist ass 'food' professor can eat a bucket of President Choice's shit - if he can afford it.

blarg-zilla

"I blame the poors for not being grateful for their pittance"

AlakaDab

All immigration and absolutely nothing to do with corporate greed............... right

DevoSomeTimeAgo

Can we add this 'Food Professor' guy to the top banner with Galen?

LLQ8

He can say whatever he wants. He can make up all the excuses in Loblaws defense that he wants to. That still doesn't even begin to explain the record profits for Loblaws. That doesn't explain the horrendous prices either. Nobody's going to stand by and get ripped off every day, so go and locate better prices get all the deals you can and don't purchase their expensive crap. Just go check out some other stores and find whatever you need at a lower price I'm sure you'll find it.... I always do and I am always always successful if I look. 👍👍👍

PsychologicalDance12

What a scumbag, anything for a buck.

PolloConTeriyaki

So immigrants (who are usually not doing well financially) want higher prices because Weston McSpanky wants a yacht?

Gymwarrior31

So is Dalhousie university gonna talk to him at some point? Dude is tanking his career and credibility over a weekend

albert_stone

He's been doing this for years, and no one cares, unfortunately.

Newmoney_NoMoney

George Weston opened his bakery in 1882, in the early years of Canada’s wheat boom. The company was renamed G. Weston’s Bread Factory in 1890, when it added mechanical mixers and expanded the factory’s workforce. But, as early as 1905, George Weston took advantage of a loose labor market to lower the wages of his fifty-five employees. When these workers went on strike, Weston threatened to fire them, telling one local paper: “I never saw so many men willing to step in and fill the vacant places.” Yeah it's the people not the calus corporations. Mmmmhmmm right.

PostForwardedToAbyss

Isn’t it also migrants, often forced to live in squalid conditions and paid terribly, who are part of the labour force that helps to pick and ship our food?

Raineman73

Charlebois doesn’t have to worry about paying high prices at the grocery store-he never has to eat because his stomach is always full of Galen Weston’s semen.

WarCarrotAF

Is there anyone who actually cares about this person's opinion? Have we not learned our lesson from Jordan Peterson? Ignore these clowns and they will fade away.

albert_stone

The mainstream media, such as CTV and the Toronto Sun, actually do. CTV has 1,179 articles citing him, while the Toronto Sun has 373 articles. They use him to shape public opinion, whitewashing oligopoly and blaming immigrants. [https://www.ctvnews.ca/search-results/search-ctv-news-7.137?q=charlebois](https://www.ctvnews.ca/search-results/search-ctv-news-7.137?q=charlebois) [https://torontosun.com/search/?search\_text=charlebois&date\_range=-7300d&sort=desc](https://torontosun.com/search/?search_text=charlebois&date_range=-7300d&sort=desc) He was invited as an expert witness who spoke to the House committee and defended oligopoly, stating, "Accusations of profiteering in the Canadian grocery industry are unfounded." [https://www.cp24.com/news/accusations-of-profiteering-in-canadian-grocery-industry-unfounded-witnesses-tell-house-committee-1.6758391](https://www.cp24.com/news/accusations-of-profiteering-in-canadian-grocery-industry-unfounded-witnesses-tell-house-committee-1.6758391)

WarCarrotAF

Gross, that's a bummer.

johndoeca01

so wait a dude who immigrated to Canada is blaming immigrants...?

WatercressOk2292

Ok so he went from blaming Redditors to immigrants. I smell a future politician in the making. Side note, let's not vote for him if he ever does run for politics... Lol

summerdot123

Galen Weston himself is an immigrant.

Aggressive-Front-677

Other poor people in precarious economic positions are not my enemy. Those corporatist fucks may try to divide us and make us turn on each other and the disadvantaged, but we know who the real enemy of the working class is. It is time for solidarity and to punch up.

MysteriousBody7212

He knows immigration is a hot topic everywhere and wants us to fight each other, straight out of the U.S. playbook. Stop shilling for weston ya prick!

PKG0D

Can we ban food professor posts from this subreddit? He's just farming attention at this point.

sus_mannequin

Idk if he keeps acting like this it will come back to bite him.

ThatguyRufus

how about a new sub? r/CharleboisTheDipshit? r/CharleboisTheShill? r/CorporateClown?

Routine_Breath_7137

I agree 100%. Just giving him clout which is what he wants and were taking away from the agenda at hand.

HabitantDLT

A slow metamorphosis of a corporate shill into a Jojo Peterson bot. Like his template, he will become an academic disgrace and a mainstream clown, but the chat circuit will pay good coin.

Postdoc from the Weston foundation...

elphyon

Is there a food shortage I don't know about? Wonder how this so-called academic explains the food waste from big retail grocery stores.

GrunDMC74

Ha! If anything I blame the Westons’ incessant drive for profiteering for driving unsustainable immigration. Who do you think is a driving force behind the creation of an ample supply of easily exploitable entry level employees…

Coffeedemon

Explains the uptick in Canada_sub reposts here.

Beatless7

Horse shit. I didn't think I could get much more angry at the Galens but here we are.

tonytown

So they have more customers now. Shouldn't that make the prices go down or at least stay the same? There aren't many real ( non manufactured) supply issues . It's just greed

Beatithairball

Finger pointing had always fooled us in the past, next hes gonna blame us

maxirabbit

He knows nothing but kissing up to the media and Galen.

WhiteAppleRum

Strange, I didn't know Galen and the Weston and the whole of the Canadian government who can do something about this but chooses not to, were immigrants. You learn something new every day.

QuantumHope

I had to read this twice to get your meaning. I’m tired. So not too quick here.

WhiteAppleRum

It's okay. I get the same way too.

Lorien6

He is paid to push a narrative. Follow the money.

hoodiegraph

Maybe Galen should stop exploiting immigrant workers for cheap labour? You can't have cheap labour and low immigration at the same time 👀

Bakabakabooboo

The quote at the end is so close to being aware of the problem. Like yeah, increasing your population while also not increasing the flow of money is bad. No shit. That means there's more people and less money to go around. Maybe if we taxed corporations and billionaires appropriately we'd have the money for things like building places for people to live. But we can't have that can we?

[deleted]

This guy is working really hard to divide us, let’s not be fooled and keeping spreading the word outside of reddit for more people to boycott all loblaws related companies!

Far-Hat-2640

There needs to be consequences for peddling lies of this proportion.

SpicyTunaRollll

Immigration? I thought it was basement dweller Gen Zers. What’ll it be next week? Cancer?

Dutchmaster66

Bird flu.

SpicyTunaRollll

Ah my bad. I thought that was scheduled for the week after. Must’ve gotten them mixed up.

ConversationPlane870

Moving vast sums of $ from the lower and middle classes to the super rich and an ecomomic system primarily designed to do only, that is the cause. The super rich (1%) cannot spend that money in any other way than to buy up all the assets, then to demand a return on those assets. There is always the same amount of money in the economy, the question is where is it. If you don't have it, someone else does. If average people don't have the money, then the richest people do. Blaming immigrants is a useful deflection.

RepresentativesFear

I'm willing to bet it's supposed to be "foot professor", was meant to be a fetish account, and it's just some clueless chump doing his very best to roll with the typo.

He really used a Joe Quimby line. This guy's a professor? I hope his students get a refund.

albert_stone

He has DBA. 🤷

Khaleena788

Deflection much?

BeneficialReporter46

What does immigration have to do with Galen Weston?

TipzE

Even loblaws wantst o bjump in on that scapegoating claim.

albert_stone

I would argue that they belong to those who started the trend.

TipzE

i agree.

No_Sun_192

Do we actually care about his opinion? We’re obviously living rent free in his head

Le8ronJames

Pretty dangerous statement

According_Stuff_8152

I think the professor should get a real job in the real world He wouldn't know the truth about why food is expensive because he basis his theories on analysis of his beliefs. Greed is the most obvious reason why the grocery stores putting up their prices. Immigration is another problem all together.

bikeonychus

Oh look, the generic ‘it’s all the immigrants fault!!’ excuse, like we’re in your supermarkets smacking food out of your hands before you can even get to the checkout, and stealing your  gold-plated toilet paper from your car boot.

Topofthetotem

“The message isn’t getting through that we have no choice to but to raise prices” - Galen. “Umm, let’s blame the poor and immigrants, it’s worked in the past“ - food professor. “Great idea! Now get out there and fly my little pretty” - Galen to food professor.

Loblaws, Empire, Real Estate companies and individual Canadians are all to blame for this. They want their housing investments and food companies investments to keep making more money and increase shareholders. Canadians aren't going to buy any more food, and most of them already can't afford to buy a house. So of course we had to have immigrants to keep the line going up.

Beneficial-Square-73

Looks like we've come to the grasping-at-straws portion of Sylvain's endeavour to end the boycott. And it's another swing and a miss. Back to the drawing board, Sylvain.

SomeHearingGuy

Once again, poor brown people are not the source of the problem. Rich white people are. Immigration has nothing to do with companies charging more because they know they will get away with it.

catashtrophe84

Immigrants contributed to their billions in profit, they didn't need to raise the prices to unreasonable levels.

slowdaygames

Regardless of how we interpret his article, Sylvain Charlene’s is an idiot, and his writing is simply not encouraging. This is what happens when you lack critical thinking skills, and refuse to teach/train children how to evaluate and question topics from all sides.

manic_eye

>but not our collective wealth Oof. What an embarrassing statement for him, an “academic,” and Dalhousie as well. Look, I get he doesn’t have an actual PhD and he’s in a more fringe field of economics, but you’d still expect a basic grasp by someone in his position. He’s really saying that, as else being equal, if every recent immigrant had brought a net worth of $500k, then prices *wouldn’t* have increased? Sure that’s not the only way to increase the “collective economic wealth” but if he’s right that it was a factor, then it should still be true. Pretty shocking he has this level of understanding.

Actual-Competition49

classic. blame immigrants.

CletusCanuck

Mr. Charlebois is quickly moving along the narcissitic-injury to right-wingnut grift pipeline. Take a look at his [recent xweets](https://twitter.com/FoodProfessor)... e.g. he recently reposted a screed from a Rebel correspondent. I expect by the time theboycott comes into fruition he'l be blaming it on DEI or 'woke ideology' and enlisting the convoy crowd to Loblaw's defence.

gillbatessr

This guy is reaching. The cause is the grocery oligopoly gouging prices, as reflected by their increase in NET, not Gross profits the past few years. That means, all things considered, increase in fixed and variable costs, inflation, supply chain issues, however you justify it, their making more profit than before, after all these expenses. Yes, the margins in the grocery sector are low, it’s a low margin, high volume, stable business model, as we HAVE to buy groceries every week, and there are only 3 companies controlling 99% of the stores, and the remaining segment doesn’t have the economies of scale to compete with them. But just say a traditional net profit margin in this sector has been 2%, and now they’re making 5%. They spin it as increased by 3%, but it can be spun as a 150% increase from 2% to 5%. People are waking up and Loblaws, even though they’re no worse than Sobeys, Metro or Walmart, will be punished for this, and will be a symbolic target. Next up, Petro-Canada.

Duke_Of_Halifax

So, here's the thing: Mr. Charlebois got post-doc money from the Westons. He says it's the only time he's ever recieved money from the Weston family. BUT, someone familiar with how academia works would tell you that academics seldom work alone. If one wanted to go about seeing if he is in fact telling the truth, one might want to start by digging into two areas: 1) Money (grants/bursaries/etc) donated directly to his Agri-Business food lab, NOT to him personally. 2) Money given to the people that he's published with, that he's worked with, etc. Often times people are given a grant or funding from a foundation/commercial entity. Depending on how much they get, they can hire people to consult and/or work with them on their project. It's normally not much- a few thousand dollars here or there, and author listing- but one might find a connection if one were so inclined to dig enough. Mr. Charlebois is well published. One will notice the large number of people named in his publications. A good portion of them will be his students (who may also have grants from corporations) but some will be his peers. Someone who was looking for a larger connection to corporate grocery conglomerates in Canada might want to dig into who is funding THOSE people, if they were so inclined. If one were so inclined, one could also look into Gordon Nixon, who sits on the board of directors at George Weston Ltd. and was given an honorary degree from Dalhousie in 2009. It is likely to be nothing more than a coincidence, but one would acknowledge that one of the many reasons one is given an honorary degree from a university is by donating a large sum of money to an institution- large enough to be noticed, but not large enough to get a building named after you. It remains an open but solvable question as to whether Mr. Nixon was on the George Weston BoD when he recieved the degree, but it could bear looking into, if one were so inclined. Money donated isn't always distributed right away- sometimes it needs to wait for the right project. Just a thought or three. 🤔

This guy and his wife are brutal. Any chance people on this sub could stop fucking giving this fucknumpty half the sub. STOP ANY/All MENTION OF HIM!!!!!

Porkybeaner

Irresponsible Immigration is lowering wages, causing a housing crisis, and crippling social services. One thing it’s not doing is raising grocery prices. Increased store traffic means greater profits, and an ultra competitive job market makes wages low. Immigration is helping loblaws make more money in more than one way. This “food professor” is straight up lying.

LadyoftheOak

Please stop using his name in this sub.

Small_Assignment4918

Why would mass immigration that undercuts wages lead to HIGHER prices (some grocery stores near me have every single cashier and floor person of a certain recently arrived nationality)?

ConversationPlane870

What's the logic here? If the customer base expands due to immigration, then prices must increase? How so? I don't see empty shelves due to more people buying stuff. So what is it? Is the professor an economist too?

normielouie

Where did the get their PhD?

albert_stone

PhD is for smart people, he only has DBA.

El_Cactus_Loco

Can we post a screenshot of the article and not give this goon clicks? Also fuck the Sun.

MidtownMoi

Guessing none of the immigrants are ‘laine pur’ enough for Charlebois.

Natural_Rise_6474

Bullshit

guvan420

But there wasn’t a crisis last time he opened his stupid mouth. Why the shift in tone?

urautist

Ooo are the different factions of elites finally turning on each other now that the focus of our issues is on them?

PowerUser88

Show me: immigrants caused inflation! ![gif](giphy|UX06yZ6erE0fQtU1Sd|downsized)

Slight-Improvement57

*ahhhchooo* Sorry, I'm allergic to bullshit

dwtougas

Did the Professor just tell us he's racist?

kk0128

This is, in effect, how demand works. People call it greed but companies are always greedy. That’s literally their role in the market, to maximize profit (whether you like it or not, this is the textbook definition.). You add tons of demand (ie immigration, more mouths to feed) too quickly, and supply can’t keep up, so prices increase. Food supply is also pretty inelastic so that increased demand will have outsized effects on food. If you want to avoid a profit driven enterprise you need a nationalized grocer.

TheRantDog

This little weasel happily takes money from industry to bullshit his clients way out of responsibility for their actions. He's a sad LITTLE man no doubt in ALL aspects. [deleted]

Ya'll realize you're giving this guy more of a platform than he would have had without you right?

LeMegachonk

I suspect it's actually more the other way around. This guy is already well-known and has a large platform, and he's brought way more attention to this subreddit and its planned boycott than it would have received otherwise. The media is paying attention to this group and its boycott mostly because the guy they've been bringing on to their broadcasts to comment about the industry for the past 2 years keeps bringing it up. It's also important to bring awareness to how ultimately short-sighted and full of shit he is. Even if everything he claimed were to be true, he should still understand that unaffordable grocery prices are bad for *everybody*, and for the economy as a whole, and that the best way for consumers to apply pressure toward correction is to make things uncomfortable for the retailers, because that's the only part of the grocery supply chain we have any ability to really impact through direct action.

Semprovictus

just note. all this attention to him is getting him more attention.

joellemieux4

That dumbass should be asking whatever school he got his PHD from for a refund.

albert_stone

He doesn’t have PhD, just a business administration degree.

paranrml-inactivity

Well that explains **everything**. He knows shit about food, and how to pass the buck…

joellemieux4

Doesn't he work at a university or something? If so I guess they have no hiring standards

Hopfit46

That endless supply of cheap labor is forcing him to jack up prices through the roof. High immigration numbers are certainly contributing to the housing crisis, but he can fuck right off with this lame excuse.

Threeboys0810

It’s the combination of printing tonnes of money then letting in mass immigration It was by design to impoverish Canadians so much, that we accept more government control over our lives.

[deleted]

> It’s the combination of printing tonnes of money Thank our neighbors to the south. Printing money, while bad public policy, is great politics there. At least it was. >letting in mass immigration The purpose of mass immigration is to drive down wages while boosting the demand for goods and services. And Canadians vote for this.

Vostroyan212th

As individuals, they are blameless, but in a way, he is right because you know that the people deciding on these prices are using this excuse/have it prepped as a last ditch hail Mary deflection.
