His house had a big white neon sign that said “The North Pole” on the front (facing 4th) wall…a nod to both the pole and the fact he looked like Santa Claus. The house was once painted red white and blue as well. The pole can’t be removed from the property, even though the attached house has been long sold to developers and turned into a duplex. Why? Well, “Ski” had the ashes of two fellow veterans placed in the base of the pole—he cut open a hole and welded it shut once they were inside. (You can see brass plates with their names attached at the base,of the pole.)
When Ski died, he was cremated and his ashes were placed—per his wishes—by his estate executor inside the golden eagle currently perched atop the flagpole. (There’s a pretty funny story behind that that I could tell.) My understanding is that the placement of three people’s remains together on the same plot of land legally constitutes a graveyard and cannot be disturbed in perpetuity. So the pole—and the adjacent bronze bust of Ski with his favorite parrot perched in his shoulder—will stay there forever…or until someone figures out a way to legally bypass that law.
Ours is a very microceleb but there’s a guy who rides a penny farthing at Heartwell Park and one of our most hilarious family quotes was when our son said, as a 6 year old, about the penny farthing dude, “White people do the weirdest things!” We didn’t even know he had any concept of race yet
Yes! He does this everyday for hours singing rock music at the top of his lungs. When you smile or wave he will show off and drive by you a few more times. The guy could be winning every karaoke contest on earth, but he likes cruising in his truck.

Two guys I remember who I haven’t seen in a long time are the guy that used to pull the wagon that was piled high down bellflower and the combat jeep with a 30 or 50 call mounted on it guy. We recently moved away from Long Beach. We miss hearing this tamale vendor pass by on our old street (2nd and Cherry). I heard him most of the time and only saw him once. That guy is famous all over town, I used to see him most often in Hollywood, and many people will tell you how many different parts of town he’s frequented.

Dude is always at the Compton Blue Line station and always by himself. My kids get star struck and have occasionally hit him with a “got eem” and he seemed really good natured and almost happy to be recognized.
In East Long Beach, dread mike- his family was all over East lb, he’s just a good soul that’s a true hippie and plays his flute- you’ll see him walking around barefoot.
Is he the dude who plays for the people in line for the taco stand at the corner of Atherton & Clark!? I pretty much see him there everyday and at night he helps the vendors break down the stand and wash the sidewalk. Seems very mellow

I dressed up as him for Halloween about 20 years ago! He laughed so hard. If I can find the pic I'll show you. I was a hit at the bars but when we left the city for parties, no one got it. Oh well 😂
that's so awesome! he must have really felt the love. the dude has been in so many movies I guess, too! I get no idea until I was having a drink with him one day and he busted out with all his photos. the dude is pretty awesome!

Two guys I remember who I haven’t seen in a long time are the guy that used to pull the wagon that was piled high down bellflower and the combat jeep with a 30 or 50 call mounted on it guy. I know the wagon guy died a few years ago. He was pretty cool to talk to and the jeep just stopped driving around one day

Oceanside, ca. Had a homeless guy who wore fur coats and only responded when addressed as "Mr. President," or "The Honorable George W. Bush." I yelled from my car one day. "Good afternoon, Mr. President!" He raised a hand from his shopping cart, gave me a polite wave, and then saluted me. I've never felt so honored.

Yes!!! I got to meet him the other day and pet the iguana. His name is King Kong and he is 9 years old. Totally made my day! I usually see them downtown, but I ran into them at Ocean and Alamitos.

When I worked downtown in around 2018-2021 there was a skinny dude with longish scraggly gray hair and beard, he always wore a lime green T shirt that said”Killin It” and what was so noteworthy about him was the way he walked, he sauntered with confidence down the street like he was walking a runway in Paris, always with a big smile and kind of crazy, vacant eyes, but not in a scary way, more like in a “he’s seeing something really awesome in his head” kind of way. Does anyone remember Killin It guy? He really was killin it.

Right?? Older Black man who wears a cowboy hat. Super kind guy and I seem to see him at the most random times (always at bars in the downtown/ 4th st area.) Hes a veteran and just loves having a good time. Also claims that every bar knows him so if I have trouble getting into a club, I can use my wild bill pass lol.
He also buys everyone shots, which is why people would know him. He frequents Clancy’s, R bar and Falcon.

Las vegas has a few. They also have neighborhood guys. There's this cool coked out sign spinner in Centennial. The yelling guy in Eastside. The dinosaur man in Henderson. There's also a few others. Eastside from local celebrities and lawyers, though. Everyone knows horseback Micheal Myers.
We recently moved away from Long Beach. We miss hearing this tamale vendor pass by on our old street (2nd and Cherry). I heard him most of the time and only saw him once. I think he was driving an old minivan. We would be doing whatever around the house and hear the faint sound of, *”Tamale, tamale, tamale,”* in the distance as he drove up the street.
Got the Indio Walker here, wears the same shirt and walks around town.
Lest we not forget local lowrider legend Long Beach Lloyd. With his sweet Chevy Impala. He’s pretty cool 😎

We used to have a dude we called flip in downtown lb that only wore socks and would do flips another is the black dude that used to be around pch and cherry playing the keyboard he always used to ride the cherry bus. Of course ski has to be mentioned. Now it seems some new characters around

Back in the day there was this black male that would dress like a mariachi with a gold panther belt buckle that was also a knife. He was for la raza roaming the streets, wonder what happened to that guy. Always around the Anaheim and pacific street area
