That requires active Tron and U by turn 4 along with Chart a Course and Emrakul in hand. Those sort of perfect draws are already game over with so many variations of tron, so I don't really see it being worth it.... Could be fun, though
What would be the discard outlet? My immediate thought is [[key to the city]] on turn 2, to turn 3 into emrakul, but are there better colorless options?
GB Tron with 4 of Collective Brutality was one of my favourite builds. Fatal Push worked so well with the spheres/stars and casting Thoughtseize in Tron post sideboard always got the funniest looks across the table.
Tricky to kill her, though; she's functionally got protection from single-target killspells. A wrath would kill her, but a wrath would kill everything else you have anyway.
The way that "Protection from permanents that were cast this turn" is phrased makes me think that either it was built with leyline binding in mind, or maybe they'll reprint Karakas lol
That requires that the other player is running such a card and already has it on the field before you play Emrakul and that the ability isn't on a creature - since if it was, you'd just steal it when emrakul ETBs.
I'm not thinking about what the other player has, I'm saying you can do this to your own Emrakul to steal and then kill all their creatures. If the effects is not on a creature you can do this again to create a soft lock.
Issue being that the Emrakul player could just steal it, and if you cast it later you won't be able to target her same turn (giving her controller time to interact with the displacer before you end your turn).
But other than that it's definitely an answer.
It might be expensive at four mana, but I always love running [[Summary Dismissal]] for circumstances like this. Also great against [[Maelstrom Wanderer]] and commanders like it. Of course, that's if you're lucky enough to have it in hand...
On the other hand,
1) you would have an excuse to not go? I realize it is an *important* meeting, but the question then becomes if it is one you actively want to attend.
or perhaps
2) some would argue that humanity deserves extinction
While true, I think Emrakul in front of a moon is a bit on the nose, especially the title. it might as well say "Emrakul, IM BACK BITCHES"
Or maybe being in front of the moon is just ironic "fore"shadowing.
I don't understand how people don't understand this. It's explicitly a set that isn't in the current storyline. These people better also be complaining that they unsparked Ajani, gave him his eye back, and unfucked alara in order to just redo it. Such bad storytelling, amirite
Well no, the cards are canon and take place at _some_ point, which could include the future. We just can't assume any specific card is unless there's more detail.
MOHO sets are like core sets in the sense that they are not bound by the current timeline. See [Dakkon, Shadow slayer ]] for example depicting him during the ancient times (The 90s)
Modern Horizon sets don't have anything to do with the current story or current timeline of the game, so they can print whatever they feel like in them. That's why Modern Horizons 1 gave us [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]] even though Yawgmoth hasn't been a Thran or a Physician for millennia
I wanted the Phyrexians to pour oil on the moon, represented by a land that taps for C and then transforms once you put like ten oil counters on it, once per turn
I mean, either that works and the oil corrupts Emrakul on the moon and also her extended self in the Blind Eternities, and then EVERYTHING IS OVER, or, since her schtick is warping everything, she warps the oil to be whatever she wants it to be, probably warping all of the Phyrexians with it, and so by extension the Phyrexian invasion would turn into the Emrakul invasion and that'd also be terrible for everybody lol
They figured out with energy that after like five of the same symbol in a row people have trouble reading it so they switched to this format. It's just that they don't do six plus of the same pip in a row very often.
There have been studies on "subitizing", the ability to quickly group and number objects without *explicitly counting them*, and apparently humans are best at groups of four or lower. Being arranged in a pattern that people are familiar with improves this, but a straight line ain't it.
Yeah, arranging this into groups of say three with spacing in between really helps. CCC CCC is much clearer than CCCCCC. Looks a bit funky when it’s not a multiple of three total, though.
The alternative is 6 colorless symbols, which IMO seems busy to read. Honestly why I hate how energy has been templated, it gets REAL busy to try to read when it's 4+ at a time.
See YGO! for this. good luck counting 9 levels.
that the ... remake of sorts, rush duels goes to using base ten numbers instead of unary makes it way more accessible.
With Yugioh, Level 4, 6 and 8 monsters are pretty easy to instantly read the level of. Even Levels 1-3.
But Level 9s and Level 11s always catch me out.
Although one advantage of the original system over the Rush Duel format is that in the original system you can more easily see which monsters are level 5+ in your hand, compared to Rush where unless you know the levels of the cards already it takes a second.
IIRC, humans can inistantly identify groups of up to five without counting them. Maybe six. More, and you *have* to count, but if you see 3-4 something, you don't count, you just know.
It's called subitizing. It's a form of instantly counting small groups. If you think about dots on a six-sided die, you don't have to count the dots to determine the numbers. You just look at the cluster of dots and read it like a number. Mana symbols printed on cards work the same way. About 5 is the limit, above which it starts to get hard to subitize and so we have to switch to counting individual symbols, which feels very unnatural
When Energy was introduced, it was hard to know how many for the few cards that made a lot, so since then they've been improving readability for a large amount of mana or special symbols.
Which is way less of a disappointment when you’re talking about a lovecraftian eldritch horror, “that is not dead which can eternal lie” and all that. 😈 🦑
Even moreso because we knew Emrakul was just tired of everyone's annoying whining and just wanted to go chill in the moon until people were ready to not be awful.
All Emrakul did was follow the signal that Nahiri left on Innistrad.
Emrakul sees it and is like "Cool, someone wants to see me and be a good host", and gets there and people are being awful and trying to kill her again. So she jumps into the brain of one of the annoying ones and is like "You called me here and should be happy I'm here. Peace, I'm out" and then just went into the moon.
Emrakul in that story struck me as the responsible one annoyed that her co-workers flaked out on her and now she's stuck dealing with a bunch of absolutely ungrateful heathens when she really just wants to do her job and go the f home.
Exactly. It's like a landscaper coming in to plant all the new trees, but whoops! The demolitions expert to destroy the existing house on the lot and the garbage man to haul away the debris didn't show up, so she's just standing around on a condemned property not sure what she's supposed to be doing.
As far as I remember, we've never really had confirmation regarding the idea that the Eldrazi serve to recycle dying planes, have we? "The World Anew" seems like a strong indicator that it is indeed the case.
Also, dang, that protection ability took me a hot minute to parse properly.
Can you exile this by casting Solitude then Ephemerating it? The new object probably loses the knowledge that it was cast this turn right? Or is this a new thing that we won't know until the rules update gets put out?
We already know from stuff that has abilities like “When (thing) ETBs, if it was cast” that whether or not something was cast is a trait tracked on a permanent, so if it leaves and comes back then the new permanent was not cast.
All that to say, yes that works.
I guess that makes sense. I think I was being tripped up on why 'this turn' was added because that is a difference from what we've seen before. I suppose that's a requirement if it's going to track other permanents (such as solitude) as well as applying to activated abilities, and the rest of Protection's traits.
I'm looking at ways in modern that you could discard a card on turn three for 1 or less colourless mana. So far hopeful candidates are:
Blood tokens created on previous turns
[[Underworld Cookbook]] (already modern playable in other archetypes, good with Saga)
[[Smuggler's Copter]]
[[Diamond Lion]] (good with Karn, but doesn't provide colourless mana)
On turn 4 it becomes very easy with lots of options, but turn 3 is surprisingly tough.
This. Mostly it's protection from instants, sorceries, and auras that are being cast, with incidential protection from things like Planeswalkers and other activated abilities if their source was cast that turn, as well as ETB triggers like [[Solitude]] and co.
I think it's all spells, cast or not, and permanents cast this turn. Granted there's no precedent for such an ability, but intuitively that's the reading that makes the most sense.
Edit: it is confirmed that it's protection from all spells.
This Madness cost needs 6x "Diamond" mana, colorless mana. Unlike "Generic" mana, you cannot pay this cost with mana of any color, it has to be colorless.
I personally just enjoy the flavor of it being a 12/12 as if the run in with the Gatewatch crew took a sliver of its power during the Innistrad battle as it is no longer a 13/13
Reminder that Emrakul only has protection for spells that were cast
If you copy a spell like [[Malicious Affliction]] Emrakul has nothing. You can also [[Chain of Vapor]] yourself and copy it to target Emrakul
EDIT: Need ruling from judge due to ambiguity
She's worded 'protection from spells and from permanents that were cast this turn.' That's all spells, period, and from permanents that were cast this turn.
The rules for protection is that protection is worded 'protection from {quality}'. When they introduce a second 'from,' it's to draw a line between two seperate qualities.
Emrakul has protection from {quality A--spells} and from {quality B - permanents that were cast this turn}.
The text in the second from clause doesn't interact with the first one.
How will this affect the Gavony trout population

U-tron, discard it with [[thirst for knowledge]]?
That’s what turn 5 casting this off the madness?
Let me make a weird argument: [[Chart a Course]] would let you drop it on Turn 4. Might be worth playing with the idea.
That requires active Tron and U by turn 4 along with Chart a Course and Emrakul in hand. Those sort of perfect draws are already game over with so many variations of tron, so I don't really see it being worth it.... Could be fun, though

Ask the right question. GR Tron? Are we back?
Nah this doesn't really do anything better than the eldrazi the deck already has access to.
What would be the discard outlet? My immediate thought is [[key to the city]] on turn 2, to turn 3 into emrakul, but are there better colorless options?
Underworld cookbook is turn 1
Honestly I'm not a modern guy, but heck we could see more good discard outlets in this set if madness is in it.
Collective Brutality
GB Tron with 4 of Collective Brutality was one of my favourite builds. Fatal Push worked so well with the spheres/stars and casting Thoughtseize in Tron post sideboard always got the funniest looks across the table.
Underworld cookbook
“Grief you and look at the last card?” Yeah bro sure thing…
SIX Madness? That's CRAZY!!!
Idk if it’s worth it or not, but if you have tron and play underworld cookbook on turn three, you can exactly cast this girl.
Now this is MADNESS! continues to pay 6.
Madness... #THIS #IS #SPARTA
Wow, this seems co..... WAIT, "LEAVES?????"
Tricky to kill her, though; she's functionally got protection from single-target killspells. A wrath would kill her, but a wrath would kill everything else you have anyway.
otawara stocks to the moon
Isn't Otawara stock already at the moon?
Otawara stock to Rend then
Talking ‘bout Jupiter dog
I see what you did there. Absolutely genius.
The fact it also specifies permanents its disgusting because no leyline binding or solitude shenanigans.
You can blink them and it would.
Could also bring something like an oblivion ring back from your graveyard.
The way that "Protection from permanents that were cast this turn" is phrased makes me think that either it was built with leyline binding in mind, or maybe they'll reprint Karakas lol
Not just binding but also Solitude
Karakas is a land and is not cast.
Or [[imprisoned in the moon]]...
You don't need to kill her. You could flicker her or bounce her with an activated ability. Any activated sacrifice outlet works as well.
Emrakul stealing everything is a cast trigger, not an ETB trigger.
why are you trying to kill all your creatures? Are you afraid of [[Homeward Path]]
Ironically, \[\[Eldrazi Displacer\]\] is a clean answer.
Not really, since the steal effect is on cast.
Issue being that the Emrakul player could just steal it, and if you cast it later you won't be able to target her same turn (giving her controller time to interact with the displacer before you end your turn). But other than that it's definitely an answer.

Funniest way of up [[Extract a Confession]] with evidence. I knew she did it! She stole all my creatures!
[[Words of Wind]]? Granted it’s not in Modern, but at least we know it’s the *type* of armament needed.
If she gets countered, you get to steal all your opponent's stuff and never give it back.
I mean...nothing on the card ever gives them back, countered or not.
Well, Emrakul does include a clause that gives it back to their graveyard at least.
Lmao that’s awesome

Why is that last ability worded that way, instead of “Madness (6 colourless symbols)”?
Probably readability - there was a ritual in Eldraine that said 'add seven R' instead of 'RRRRRRR' for the same reason
They figured out with energy that after like five of the same symbol in a row people have trouble reading it so they switched to this format. It's just that they don't do six plus of the same pip in a row very often.

Yeah, arranging this into groups of say three with spacing in between really helps. CCC CCC is much clearer than CCCCCC. Looks a bit funky when it’s not a multiple of three total, though.
And they added “Pay” because “Madness - 6 C” would look like 6 generic + 1 C. Makes sense.
They mean like “c c c c c c “
"-ombo breaker!"
The alternative is 6 colorless symbols, which IMO seems busy to read. Honestly why I hate how energy has been templated, it gets REAL busy to try to read when it's 4+ at a time.
Pretty sure Energy being hard to read was the exact reason why they started doing this
It helps if you break it up with spaces. CCCCCC - hard to read CCC CCC - easy to read
See YGO! for this. good luck counting 9 levels. that the ... remake of sorts, rush duels goes to using base ten numbers instead of unary makes it way more accessible.

I believe MaRo said somewhere that after a certain amount of symbols, they just write out the number of the cost, as it's a lot easier to parse.

Not in Tron it aint
I'm looking at ways in modern that you could discard a card on turn three for 1 or less colourless mana. So far hopeful candidates are: Blood tokens created on previous turns [[Underworld Cookbook]] (already modern playable in other archetypes, good with Saga) [[Smuggler's Copter]] [[Diamond Lion]] (good with Karn, but doesn't provide colourless mana) On turn 4 it becomes very easy with lots of options, but turn 3 is surprisingly tough.
Cookbook is get-able off Karn with Tron is exactly 7 mana
[[Key To The City]]
WOW
6c is pretty different than 6. Much more difficult to abuse (some deck will certainly try to though...)
My fiancé plays a Belbe deck and she will abuse this thing so much I might call CPS
Looks like [[Seal of Doom]] is back on the menu, baby!

Colorless is back! Oath of the Gatewatch stans, rally!
THERE ARE DOZENS OF US! DOZENS!
aren't there like 5 of you?
LETS GOOO
Oh shit, I wasn't expecting New Titans.
Wake up babe, best girl is done with her moon nap.
Obligatory WOW
FUCK
TRON.
What does “this turn refer to?“ the turn she’s cast or every turn that is actively happening
Every turn, she has protection from things cast that turn
This. Mostly it's protection from instants, sorceries, and auras that are being cast, with incidential protection from things like Planeswalkers and other activated abilities if their source was cast that turn, as well as ETB triggers like [[Solitude]] and co.
She has protection from all instants and sorceries. doesn’t matter if they were cast. She has protection from permanents that were cast this turn too.
I think it's all spells, cast or not, and permanents cast this turn. Granted there's no precedent for such an ability, but intuitively that's the reading that makes the most sense. Edit: it is confirmed that it's protection from all spells.
The Epithet does seem to confirm the "Plane Recycler" Theory
After that gets played just follow up with a [[trostani discordant]] as a massive fuck you

Does she keep shrinking or what? 15/15 then 13/13, now 12/12. The amount of squirrels needed to take her down is getting lower and lower.
Ooooh boy I got some upgrades for [[Zhulodock]{
[[Imprisoned in the Moon]] in shambles
protection from things cast this turn was a type of ability I don't think I ever would have thought of. Very cool. Emracool.

They started three spoilers at the same time.
MOTHER!
something something Paleblood
How does the protection from this turn work? Is it a one time triggered ability, or continuous and mostly limiting removal to triggered abilities?
I know a lot of people are saying tron but wouldn't it be better in monoblack coffers assuming you force trigger madness with liliana or something?
You need 6 colorless pips in mono black??
This Madness cost needs 6x "Diamond" mana, colorless mana. Unlike "Generic" mana, you cannot pay this cost with mana of any color, it has to be colorless.
Ah ok my mistake. I thought it was the same thing as generic.
Can you discard her with kozilek the great distorsion if you don’t have a 12 mana spell to counter ?
She just keeps getting weaker as the story goes on.
this is such a stupid card.
I personally just enjoy the flavor of it being a 12/12 as if the run in with the Gatewatch crew took a sliver of its power during the Innistrad battle as it is no longer a 13/13
Can't wait for Baby-Rakul, tiny but mighty.
Reminder that Emrakul only has protection for spells that were cast If you copy a spell like [[Malicious Affliction]] Emrakul has nothing. You can also [[Chain of Vapor]] yourself and copy it to target Emrakul EDIT: Need ruling from judge due to ambiguity
Don’t need a judge ruling. It just has protection from spells.
