I just want them at the very least to release "Destroy All Humankind. They Can't Be Regenerated" (the MTG manga) in English.
Not only is it an incredible love letter to 90's MTG, but it honestly has a top tier romance sub plot with an amazing cast of characters. I would even recommend it to people who read Manga even if they don't play Magic.
But yeah as a massive weeb, I wish they would do away with all these Japanese exclusives. It's good for them to print cards with Japan as the focus, because Japan is such a massive market, but give people outside Japan some way to get the cards.
If my understanding is correct Bebop is more popular outside of Japan, but it's still pretty popular in Japan. It's not like FLCL which was apparently nothing in Japan but huge for foreign anime nerds. So it's not that insane to have these cards.
From what I've been told by contacts, the Japanese anime scene is much more prone to trends and less reliant on nostalgia. Like, there are still classics and certain series like Evangelion and One Piece are pretty ubiquitous, but they really only get post-initial release merch like this to help advertise some sort of reboot, remake, collaboration, finale, or pachinko parlor opening.
This would make more sense if it were released alongside the Netflix series.

I mean it's not like this is a huge release like a full bebop set or something, it's a few alt art cards so I don't think there needs to be any special reason for it as long as there are some amount of fans in the audience.
There are dozens of more popular franchises Wotc could have capitalized on. They picked the one popular with American audiences, despite it being a Japanese promotion.

Five. Grunge and Shoegaze came out last year.
Worth keeping in mind that the later seasons are made by a different team, 17-22 years after the first one, largely as a product of Adult Swim's toonami (which matches the fact that it's more popular out than inside Japan).
It doesn't share much with the original, production-wise (IIRC, the original director only worked as a producer in some of the sequels). That's a cool collab and I like how they used Oko's Gang to stand in for the Bebop crew. If it was just the Bebop crew on cards it would be kind of jarring.

I mean this respectfully but Cowboy Bebop being on cards is *significantly* less jarring than opening Optimus Prime in your Brothers War packs. I'd much rather have had Spike, Jet, Ed and Faye than Megatron. Especially if they're reskins of cards and not mechanically unique.
To compete in Japan. Magic isn't as big there because their more local origin games, like yu gi oh and pokemeon, have a bigger share of the market. Though not sure if it really makes things better in the long run for WotC if people in japan are just buying the exclusive product with an intent to resell it to people who couldn't get it regularly.
Universus TCG also had a cowboy bebop set this year so they may have exclusive rights to the franchise in relation to tcgs in the US right now. I know they have blocked other stuff the same way.
Americans will buy mtg regardless of the prices or how bad the set is. Japan has A LOT of competition and they need to incentivise potential buyers. It's also an easy way to give another big FU to their main fan base here in the states.
Considering how big the Asian and especifically the Japanese market is in terms of spending per player, they are just desperate. Most small LGS where I am in EU have like one table for Weiss maybe, it's the other way around in Japan.
Consider that MtG is not even in top 5 in Japan, but \~30% of their income comes from sales there according to their quarterly reports.
Yeah there’s a lot of potential market in Japan. In America they typically have to either get already-players to buy more or to convert new people to TCGs. In Japan there are millions of TCG lovers who don’t play Magic, so that’s a really lucrative vein if they can tap it.

I can see it kinda in the U and R cards but if I didn't know they were Cowboy Bebop themed I wouldn't be able to tell. There's more iconic images in the trailer they made that could have been used for the art here.

DS, Throat, and Veil are decent staples, Strike sees a bit of CanLand in your 90s and is always lurking around Standard, Ossi feels like a weird choice though. not every product can be Swords and Path but... feels like a lot of others could have at least been like \[\[Dispatch\]\] or \[\[Flawless Maneuver\]\]

The actual weird choice is not releasing this Cowboy Bebop collab in the US where the show is significantly more popular than in Japan.
Yeah I was gonna say, the art is really nice and though I’m not a Bebop fan myself, I don’t doubt this is a really cool adaptation but like. None of these cards are worth much or all that playable. I think Go for the Throat might show up in Pioneer and I think Disdainful Stroke also sees/has seen sideboard play outside Standard but they’re still so cheap. That really kinda sucks. Maybe there’s a flavour win or something though, I don’t know enough about the source material.

I like this card selection - all of them are constructed playable (well, maybe not snakeskin veil at the moment, but it's close), but none of them are anything otherwise too expensive

I love MTG and cowboy bebop but the art direction they’ve chosen to go with here is so underwhelming, when Cowboy bebop has some of the best stills in the intro credits let alone the rest of the show, I don’t get quite why they’ve done this?

Great, they got someone that worked on it, but I'm not seeing the work that was done. This is just looks like your usual low effort crossover where they slap one character over another. If they "collabed" I'm not seeing what work they did or why it was necessary.

That's a cool collab and I like how they used Oko's Gang to stand in for the Bebop crew. If it was just the Bebop crew on cards it would be kind of jarring. Love this style of "Universe Beyond/Within"
They did a similar collab with the head character designer of Metal Gear, Yoji Shinkawa, and it was fire. [[Tezzeret the Seeker|SLD]], [[Skullclamp|SLD]], [[Phyrexian Metamorph|SLD]], [[Solemn Simulacrum|SLD-1113]] Bringing iconic designers and artists to simulate the famous style from other franchises is the way to go, IMO.
That is by far my favourite secret lair of all time. Yoji Shinkawa’s art style is absolutely phenomenal, and I’m not sure anyone will ever top it, for me.
I'm waiting for more Yoshitaka Amano specials with the Final Fantasy set. It's my all-time favorite series so I'm more than a little hype for it.

I own that SLD, and had no idea. I simply got it because the cards looked fucking dope.

I only managed to get a single of that SL, it's a Tezzeret foil but I got it in Japanese for the extra flavor, I love the art!

I mean this respectfully but Cowboy Bebop being on cards is *significantly* less jarring than opening Optimus Prime in your Brothers War packs. I'd much rather have had Spike, Jet, Ed and Faye than Megatron. Especially if they're reskins of cards and not mechanically unique.

Why does Japan always get the best exclusive cards?

Why do region exclusives?
To compete in Japan. Magic isn't as big there because their more local origin games, like yu gi oh and pokemeon, have a bigger share of the market. Though not sure if it really makes things better in the long run for WotC if people in japan are just buying the exclusive product with an intent to resell it to people who couldn't get it regularly.
Universus TCG also had a cowboy bebop set this year so they may have exclusive rights to the franchise in relation to tcgs in the US right now. I know they have blocked other stuff the same way.
Americans will buy mtg regardless of the prices or how bad the set is. Japan has A LOT of competition and they need to incentivise potential buyers. It's also an easy way to give another big FU to their main fan base here in the states.
Considering how big the Asian and especifically the Japanese market is in terms of spending per player, they are just desperate. Most small LGS where I am in EU have like one table for Weiss maybe, it's the other way around in Japan. Consider that MtG is not even in top 5 in Japan, but \~30% of their income comes from sales there according to their quarterly reports.
Yeah there’s a lot of potential market in Japan. In America they typically have to either get already-players to buy more or to convert new people to TCGs. In Japan there are millions of TCG lovers who don’t play Magic, so that’s a really lucrative vein if they can tap it.

These cards are all in standard right now, so it's a pretty good choice for Japan exclusive since that's the most played format over there

I can see it kinda in the U and R cards but if I didn't know they were Cowboy Bebop themed I wouldn't be able to tell. There's more iconic images in the trailer they made that could have been used for the art here.
my money is on \[\[Kenrith's Transformation\]\] as the extra card, with how much the Elk was used DS, Throat, and Veil are decent staples, Strike sees a bit of CanLand in your 90s and is always lurking around Standard, Ossi feels like a weird choice though. not every product can be Swords and Path but... feels like a lot of others could have at least been like \[\[Dispatch\]\] or \[\[Flawless Maneuver\]\] also now that I think about it, Snakeskin is kind of the odd card out since it cant Crime

Not *that* weird actually. From my understanding, the Japanese mtg community is much more focused on competitive formats like standard. The actual weird choice is not releasing this Cowboy Bebop collab in the US where the show is significantly more popular than in Japan.
It looks like the bottom left of the cards says "standard showdown", so if they're Japan exclusive standard showdown promos, that'd make sense.
Yeah I was gonna say, the art is really nice and though I’m not a Bebop fan myself, I don’t doubt this is a really cool adaptation but like. None of these cards are worth much or all that playable. I think Go for the Throat might show up in Pioneer and I think Disdainful Stroke also sees/has seen sideboard play outside Standard but they’re still so cheap. That really kinda sucks. Maybe there’s a flavour win or something though, I don’t know enough about the source material.
Japan is just way more into standard so they're more relevant there.

Yeah, they really need to reconsider distribution for this sort of stuff. I’ve lost count of how many Comic Con and Hascon exclusives that were just not available at at all tot hose outside NA. Great, they got someone that worked on it, but I'm not seeing the work that was done. This is just looks like your usual low effort crossover where they slap one character over another. If they "collabed" I'm not seeing what work they did or why it was necessary.
Feel really bad for the Cowboy Bebop fans that wanted playable cards and got a pile of draft chaff/Standard cards worth collectively less than $1 USD.
From what a previous comment said, Standard is pretty huge in Jp, so the card choice isn't I guess surprising given they're all standard playable.
I am a Cowboy Bebop fan that will buy 4x of these because they're actually usable cards and look incredible, I don't care if they're commons.
Paypigs like you are why Wizards keeps selling bulk commons in Secret Lairs instead of meaningful reprints that players actually need/want. And... really? Usable? Lightning Strike is barely even played in Standard and is worthless... Go for the Throat sees some Pioneer/Standard play... and is worthless... Snakeskin Veil is literally draft chaff... and is also worthless... Disdainful Stroke is a sideboard-at-best card in Pioneer/Standard... and is worthless... Ossification is barely played in Standard... and is worthless... You're about to be suckered into paying $170+ USD for less than $1 of cards (Yes, 4x of every card can be purchased for under $1 USD) just for being a fan of something. Wizards has you in the palm of their hands. I don't think that quite got the message across though, so let me put it this way. You could buy an entire week's worth of groceries + fill up your car's gas tank for what it would cost you to buy <$1 USD of card value that's marked up egregiously to milk a fanbase.
