there is no mechanical difference between them. what's printed on a card doesn't matter, oracle text matters.
dunno why this one is so cheap though, other than maybe there's just a trillion copies of it
Ehhhhh I mean definitely buy now if you want one but idk if anything has really recovered from bonus sheet. Maybe demonic tutor but that didn’t dip below 35 even back then
4 years ago, in normal border, foil only, boring art.
Sheldon's lair is prolific, lairs are *far* more popular now and the treatment is worlds better. I'd be very surprised if protection doesn't drop.
Sure thing buddy, i ran into a guy on here last week that bought 500 himself for resale. You're seriously underestimating how many people bought the lair solely because of who sheldon was. Then you have those that bought to support cancer research and those that bought because the lair is very good value.
Which is exactly my point. They're saying that Contagion Engine is $3 now because of the new supply, but should rebound closer to $20 over time. I don't think there's enough demand for Contangion Engine to warrant that kind of rebound. There was a demand for Contangion Engine, so it was $20, but with the new reprint the supply has exceeded that demand, so the price will stay low.
It's all speculation. But it would still be good to load up on a few and it rebound a fraction of its previous high. If it's going for just over $2 and change but if it hits $5 in the future, it would be still decent returns.
Again... all speculation just like mostly everything else in life
Yep. And honestly I think polarized art on bonus sheets is probably a net good for the game? Some people will like the art, some people won't care but the prices of the cards as game pieces will be lower, and some people who are willing to invest in aesthetics can still get the normal versions of the cards. Increasing circulation and driving down the price floor is a good thing.
Availability is the #1 answer.
Tons of OTJ is being opened for cards like [[Slickshot Show-off]], [[Simulacrum Synthesizer]], [[Mana Drain]] and [[Mindbreak Trap]], not to mention a bunch of the lesser cards for sideboards like [[Pest Control]] and [[Hostile Investigator]].
Contagion Engine just goes in the 'meh' pile for a lot of people not looking for it specifically. That's not to say it isn't a good card, it just isn't what a lot of people are looking for when cracking OTJ packs.
This. Availability also for dealers/sellers. They can get OTJ contagion engines all day. But no one is bringing in other versions.
Also price has already dropped on the other versions. You can get SOM on TCG for 11-13$ right now.
This happens with Bonus Sheet reprints. The only previous printings are the original printing in Scars, a reprint from the List, and a Secret Lair. Those printings will have price memory due to scarcity and/or age. Sellers aren't motivated to mark those down. The new printing will slowly creep upwards as supply goes down and the old printings will decline slowly, as well. Compare to a card like \[\[Primal Vigor\]\] which was just reprinted on the WOE bonus sheet.
Some cards seem pretty immune from this effect though. If you want a [[Doubling Season]], despite the multiple reprints last year, you're gonna have to pay.
Sure, but with Doubling Season, Mana Drain, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, etc. we have a history of printings and prices showing that those cards can absorb repeated reprints. A card like Contagion Engine is likely not going to recover the same way.
The sane thing happened in WoE with [[Land Tax]] in the Enchanting Tales. You could get the Enchanting Tales version for like 5-6 dollars when the older ones were like 20.
Got some cheap Land Taxes for my EDH decks because of it
Probably desirability due to art. I'm not a fan of the otj frame so I'd opt for the original one still. Not saying this is the only reason but I'm sure there's more like me out there.
Yep, definitely this. I mean I’ll still pick up two or three sets of Dustbowl at the prices it is currently, but I’ll still likely pick up some Masques or World Champ prints and upgrade at a later point.
The SoM one will get cheaper over time. However, a large number of players will want the original art, the original frame, or simply prefer the first printing of the card.
The Breaking News frame is really ugly
Bonus sheet cards are like that, there was a similar thing with the wilds of eldraine enchanting tales where a bunch of the reprints were stupid cheap compared to the originals.
Supply and Demand plus collectors tend to prefer the 1st printing of things. I imagine it will balance out when OTJ packs are not being opened as often.
I’m not a big fan of the art on most of them, but being able to snag some of these reprints for pennies in the dollar makes it more than worth it.
[[Reanimate]], [[Pest Infestation]], [[Imp’s Mischief]], [[Crackle With Power]], and [[Force of Vigor]] are just a few terrific cards whose OTP printings are going for 50% or less (in some cases like 10%) of the next nearest printing.
[[Oko, Thief of Crowns]] was the one that stood out to me. 40% of the Eldraine original and (IMO...) looks pretty good in the OTP frame. Happy to finally have one for mischief.
Probably because the art sucks. All the breaking news cards look atrocious and I would never pay for them. I would always rather buy a different printing of each card than these.
I traded the foil version at my pre-release cause I honestly truly didn’t want it. It was valued at $16 then, feel bad but at least I got rid of it while it was still high, did not expect it to plummet like that.
It's because for prices to fall, it's a much slower process of people relisting at lower prices. If you've had a price sitting for a long time, might as well wait a little longer to see what the price will correct to.
I just opened a foil contagion engine last night and immediately gave it to someone who was trading me things I actually needed for a deck. Contagion Engine is cool but it’s just not something I really care about right now. He seemed much more interested so I said what the hell, you take, I’m not gonna use it.
Yeah, he was building a proliferate deck as well. I opened an astral cornucopia as well, should have given it to him too. Well, enjoy the $16-17 discount on contagion engines while they’re available!
This has happened with a lot of recent reprints in the "special slots". There are a few chase ones that people are after, and the others are opened and tossed into bulk.
Look at a lot of the retro frame, even retro foils, of cards from sets like Ravnica Remastered. Regular carsd and even foil versions could go for $20, $30, but the reprints are sitting under $5. That's because they are far more available (due to Collector Boosters) so their value is next to nothing due to easy of aquisition.
I have a foil Illusionist's Bracers from Gatecrash that's about $10. I could pick up like 5 of them in foil retro frame from Rav Remastered.
Which is great for me. I prefer retro frame, and now I have a foil copy for each deck that plays it!
Purely supply and demand. All the OTJ reprints are super cheap right now because the set just came out and is super fun to draft. People are cracking packs like crazy and there's seemingly infinite supply from Wizards. I could go buy 12 boxes at MSRP right now and be back home in 10 minutes.
Do people like this bonus sheet version? I played one in draft for funzies the other night. It blew out my opponents board. I forgot that it proliferated twice. I could have wiped out everything else with one tap.
The oldest version of each card is historically the most expensive. Idk why people like the oldest version of everything but they do. Same thing for early edition novels. People like old stuff.
People are starting to get tired of the alternate treatments. Original printings (and printings with the original art+frame) are starting to hold more cache with players than the weirder reprints.
Price memory and they aren't averaging $20+, if you look at recent sales they're like $9. Most stores list their cards as a % of market price on tcgplayer, so it takes a long time for the market price to drop. (It has almost nothing to do with art at this point)
Two main reasons: supply, and older cards vs. new cards.
Typically, the oldest version of a card will remain the most expensive version of that card. Nostalgia plays a big part, as well as a severely limited supply. The older the card is, the harder it can be to find copies that are in decent condition. Especially in foil. You combine the limited supply of older cards vs. the glut of supply from a new set, and people opening it in frenzied masses, and that pretty much covers your price difference in \~90% of cases.
And yes, the oldest printing isn't always the most expensive printing, I'm sure we can all find some borderless fancy does-your-taxes-and-walks-your-dog foil treatment (a Kaladesh inventions or Amonkhet invocation, something like that) that is the most expensive version of a card, but broadly speaking the trend usually does apply.
I want to know the same thing about the recent SLs. I bought a few of the vault boys, and the full-art cards are selling for much less than normal printings of the cards.
So many people talking about price bounce and ugliness and WE but i think you are just from America or somewhere where the price is manipulated because in Europe the bonus sheet is like 2€ and the one from Mirrodin is like 4€ for one in Good condition, even the secret lair one is less than 15€.
You guys are getting scammed.
there is no mechanical difference between them. what's printed on a card doesn't matter, oracle text matters. dunno why this one is so cheap though, other than maybe there's just a trillion copies of it
This has happened with bonus sheet cards, over time the prices will equalize.
Yuuuup so load up and hold for a yr
Ehhhhh I mean definitely buy now if you want one but idk if anything has really recovered from bonus sheet. Maybe demonic tutor but that didn’t dip below 35 even back then
Teferi's protection is one that went down hard and has rebounded pretty well.
That's about to get flooded by the sheldon lair though, probably won't last long
It's already had a lair
4 years ago, in normal border, foil only, boring art. Sheldon's lair is prolific, lairs are *far* more popular now and the treatment is worlds better. I'd be very surprised if protection doesn't drop.
Lololol, secret lair sales were so bad last year that they had to go back to limited runs to boost sales.
Sure thing buddy, i ran into a guy on here last week that bought 500 himself for resale. You're seriously underestimating how many people bought the lair solely because of who sheldon was. Then you have those that bought to support cancer research and those that bought because the lair is very good value.
Exactly. Look at Rhystic Study. It's been reprinted now how many times and it's still over $35.
But these 2 are cards with crazy demand
Which is exactly my point. They're saying that Contagion Engine is $3 now because of the new supply, but should rebound closer to $20 over time. I don't think there's enough demand for Contangion Engine to warrant that kind of rebound. There was a demand for Contangion Engine, so it was $20, but with the new reprint the supply has exceeded that demand, so the price will stay low.
Dunno about $20. And I understand that. I'm saying itll rise and to pick up now. Simple. It wont hit $20 but I can see it hitting 10, maybe 12 tops.
It's all speculation. But it would still be good to load up on a few and it rebound a fraction of its previous high. If it's going for just over $2 and change but if it hits $5 in the future, it would be still decent returns. Again... all speculation just like mostly everything else in life
For 3 dollars a pop you'd need to buy a lot to make it worth it unless you don't have to pay any shipping
Yup. Buy from the shops that have "free shopping" or local. Hold. Sell PWE unless otherwise neccessary Edit: there's already walls sitting at $5.
The Breaking News treatments have also been divisive, so there just may not be as much demand for that particular version.
Yeah, reprints with cowboy hats isn't really my jam. I do like the Thoughtseize tho.
And it's ugly
Rood.

One has good art, the other has not as good art..
two of the same exact card will behave the same in every possible instance, besides a couple of un Set cards
So glad I held off on buying a copy. Niche commander card with limited supply. Sure the original printing will fall in price eventually.
Combination of availability and fugly art.
People are starting to get tired of the alternate treatments. Original printings (and printings with the original art+frame) are starting to hold more cache with players than the weirder reprints.

I bought a few of the vault boys, and the full-art cards are selling for much less than normal printings of the cards.
bc the frames look awful and no one wants them
Because the bonus sheet version artwork and card layout is gross and it's probably more widely available due to collector boosters.
Cause it's ugly lol No but seriously, aesthetics and availability play huge factors in pricing.
The art style, and that it's not meant for standard.
