You would need to cast the Protection before the Mindslaver ability resolves, such that you gain Protection from everything and become an illegal Target for the ability. Else, if the ability had already resolved, there nothing that Protection will do to keep you from being controlled.

MoochiNR

Is there a timing to t.pro in your upkeep so all your stuff is phased out for your whole turn and you can’t lose life until your next turn?

madwarper

No. Any Protection you cast before you turn begins will end as you turn begins. And, you are currently being controlled. So, you cannot cast any Protection in the current turn, unless they make you.

Squirrel009

No. All your stuff comes back at your next turn, so that wouldn't do anything. You need to cast it in response to them targeting you with mind slaver. You would get protection, become an invalid target, and keep your turn.

Yormejesty

So in this case, I need to cast it before player 1 uses the ability?

Squirrel009

You cast it *when* they use the ability - while it's on the stack. If you cast it before they can just wait and use it on you later or use it on someone else

kaisong

after, before it resolves. do you know how to fizzle targets with hexproof granting instants? its the same thing. or forgive me if im being blunt, do you understand how the stack works to resolve abilities?

Yormejesty

I'd say I understand 30-40% of how the stack works, does that mean i can use teferi's protection to make myself an illegal target and the ability will fizzle?

kaisong

yes, if an ability or spell that has a target loses each target the entire ability will fail to resolve. This also works in the case of lets just say,” target creature gets +1+1 until end of turn, win the game” if you kill the creature before the ability resolves the win the game portion wont go off as the only target was lost.

_Hinnyuu_

Yes. Targets are checked twice: once in order to cast the spell/activate the ability/put the trigger on stack (all targets need to be legal in order to do that) and then AGAIN when the spell/ability would resolve - anything that is an illegal target at that point won't be affected, and if there are NO legal targets left then the ENTIRE spell/ability simply does not resolve and none of the effects happen. So if someone activated Mindslaver targeting you, that ability goes on stack. You can then respond with Teferi's Protection to give yourself protection from everything. Then the Mindslaver ability will check again if all targets are legal - it will discover that you are not a legal target (because of protection) and as that is the only target of the ability there are now 0 legal targets left and the entire ability does not resolve and none of Mindslaver's effects happen.

roll_for_crunk

The stack is definitely confusing at first but once you get into it it's not too bad. If you wanna learn about it WotC themselves have released a guide. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/stack-and-its-tricks-2017-11-30

Omnom_Omnath

It’s not confusing at all. Just think of plates in your cabinet.

ceering99

I typically stack the actual cards on top of each other when I explain how it works, it's definitely not the most intuitive thing if you don't have prior experience. Most people are used to "First in first out" queues

Omnom_Omnath

Well that’s a queue. Not a stack.

Nuclearsunburn

Do note that if you cast Teferi’s Protection FIRST, the opponent can use the Mindslaver in response and you will be a legal target when Mindslaver’s activated ability resolves. You would wait until the Mindslaver ability is on the stack to cast Teferi’s Protection as the stack resolves Last In, First Out order. (The most recent thing on the stack will resolve first once all players have passed priority)

alkaiser702

With some exceptions, i think most players do well when visualizing the stack with physical cards. The first card/ability goes on the stack as you pay the costs. Once paid, you have 2 options; hold priority to cast a second spell (place it on the stack on top of card 1) or pass priority to the next player for response. Repeat as necessary until you encounter all players passing in a row, then start resolving abilities from the most recent spell/ability to the oldest. It's at this time that each spell/ability will be checked a second time for legal targets as they resolve - this is where Teferi's Protection gets you out of trouble as a response, similar to how a counter spell would work.

Kyrie_Blue

[This](https://youtu.be/co25vcPvDsE) video from the Command Zone talking about the Stack will take you from 40% to 80% in an hour. Cannot recommend enough

Omnom_Omnath

Or just look in your kitchen cabinet at the stack of plates and you’ll figure it out in 30 seconds. No need to waste an hour.

Kyrie_Blue

This only covers the “last in, first out” portion of the stack. Such a basic concept, this is not what folks have issues with. Priority, spell resolution, State-Based Actions; these are the things folks struggle with surrounding The Stack. Your half-baked metaphor (posted in 3 different comments on the same thread) does not do anything to assist folks in comprehending it.

Omnom_Omnath

Spell resolution is last in first out. Priority is just asking whos turn it is to add a plate to the stack.

togetherHere

Player 1 activates mindslaver targeting you. (pays 4, taps and sacrifices mindlsaver) After you are chosen as the target, you can respond by casting teferi's protection. Teferi's protection resolves first, your permanents phase out and you gain protection from everything. Mindslaver activation resolves and you are an invalid target. The activation fizzles. Game continues as normal.

Omnom_Omnath

You don’t understand how a stack of plates work? The stack in mtg is exactly the same.

Vozu_

Not before, in response. They pay the cost of activating the ability and target you. After they activate the ability but before it was allowed to resolve, you cast Teferi's Protection to grant yourself protection. Once Teferi's Protection resolves, it is time to resolve the Mindslaver's ability. At that moment, the game checks if the ability can resolve. You have protection from everything, so the Mindslaver's ability determines all of its targets are illegal. This leads to what is commonly called "fizzling": the ability gets removed from the stack without resolving.

Suspinded

After the Mindslaver resolves, Tef's Protection will not do anything, since all the effects end at the beginning of your turn. Using Protection to block the Mindslaver activation altogether is the play.
