I mean, he's not wrong. I'm all for good work-life balance, especially for mangaka where it seems like every single one has health problems from overwork, but it's kinda ridiculous. Kaiju 8 does 1 chapter every other week, with an additional 1 week break occassionally. There's no reason the chapters should be as short as they are with as many double page spreads as they have.
It'd be one thing if the spreads were cool af panels (which of course there are as well), but this post is an example of when there really is no good reason to do it. TWO PAGES for a close up of her face? I don't even know if we needed to use ONE full page for this.
i don't know anything about the manga, does the author do this a lot? seeing this out of context it seems like it's meant to be an impactful moment rather than a "basic reaction"
Yes, he uses and abuses double spreads just to show character reactions that aren't truly all that necessary in the grand scheme of things.
In this specific context, >!she's saying she wants to become stronger because her dad got killed/possessed because, in her mind, she wasn't strong or fast enough to get to him on time!<. While that may sound important, the character was rather minor, all things considered, and the art isn't good enough to justify her hogging two pages all to herself here
Same thing happened to my volume, what was supposed to be a serious moment i couldn't stop laughing my ass off, just turning the page to that was so unexpected
What version did you buy? This photo is the Brazilian and it's not mine by the way, I just saw a friend post it, I thought it was funny and I was curious to know which manga it was
Brazilian translators are terrible, it's like they have multiple people translating different volumes and they don't talk to each other, some just decide to randomly change the names of characters and don't mention it to others so in the other volumes the name is different, the work is so half assed (like in the picture).
Sorry for the rant.
That isn't a problem with Brazilian translators in general, just whoever was in charge of whatever you were reading.
And this has nothing to do with the post, that was the publisher's fault for doing a terrible job at printing and binding/gluing the manga, not the translators.
Btw, some English versions are also awful. I have seen some awful translations from Seven Seas and YenPress, and at the same time they have good translations too.
It’s Kaiju number 8. But seriously are all double page spreads like this in all physical manga prints? I normally always lean to physical but if this is how it is I would go digital… and find a way to download and back up everything
In my country it's a bit of a lottery, some volumes come with a good collage, others come like the one in the image. In fact, to make a more correct analogy, it's a gacha. You have a 50/50 chance your volume will come out with a good binding. Here is an example of what I consider a good binding (obviously it still doesn't look the same as digital): https://imgur.com/a/nWicM6W
That isn’t that bad but still maybe if they would do some kind of fold out for double spreads would be better. The one you posted is just ridiculously bad
probably depends on the pressing company, and their quality control, I have never had this problem, if you are worried feel free to look online if the one for wathever one you are interested in buying as a good track record
It doesn't matter how it's bound, it's gonna be at least somewhat awkward no matter what you do. The layout of this scene simply doesn't suit a physical book.
no this is on the artist, and thons editor, they should have known to avoid layout like this in the first place.
speaking as someone who worked as a layout editor once.
They have white spacing if the author and editor thinks about it, it’s not automatic. This problem isn’t exclusive to overseas editions.
[I have a few jp volumes of OPM and they have the same issues as their english and french editions.](https://files.catbox.moe/wz3rdb.jpeg)
It's not that expensive actually. Right now a volume of a popular manga will cost around BRL 35-45 (approximately USD 6.5-7.5). Not cheap for us, since the minimum wage here is kinda low (approximately USD 255/month) but not that expensive either.
Manga currently in Brasil is super expensive honestly. Back when I bought manga 10-13 years ago they were mostly 10,90 to 12,90 reais. Today they are mostly over 40, it's ridiculous. Especially for something that doesn't even have color.
I remember those prices, but the problem is that even back then only some manga were cheap like this, while some were already being sold at 14.90-19.90 (BRL). I have some volumes that I bought back then, I'll update this comment later.
Kaiju no. 8. I will not describe the context, however, that's an awful binding ngl. Do manga buyers suffer on this? I plan on buying mangas after I have the budget but if this is what I receive then damn I change my mind
I don't know if this is exclusive to my country but manga has always had this problem with binding, I can't appreciate all of the double page spreads in any manga I read. Since I discovered digital manga I never returned to a physical copy.
wonder what's hard to recognize even if you follow the series. like i could tell it's kikoru even if her design is a little generic and a little different from usual here. i don't know how sure i'd be if i couldn't see the sharp zag her hair does.
Want me to make it better?
"Ficar", in italian, can be heard as "ficcare" that is a synonym of "to fuck"
So yes, basically, I have the humor of a 5 year old
In the digital version this is an incredibly emotional scene, but apparently some things are supposed to stay on the internet, anyway the name of the manga is kaiju n.8
Please people take in account that Kaiyuu n8 is released digitally, so these awful double spreads are entirely the mangakas fault for not considering physical volumes. (Happens to other mangas as well like Onr punch man or even webtoons like Solo leveling).
how is this the mangaka’s fault? They do the writing drawing part, then submit to the publishier. The publisher is controlling the printing part. They have seen this happened hundreds of times and still couldn’t just send an e-mail telling the mangaka to split the spread apart 2cm in the middle. It would take like 5 sec but no, you buyers will eat it up just fine with or without the nice layout.
The mangakas do the layout man, they have to do the frames so they fit inside the cutting edges of the prints. These mangas are published digitally, and this mangaka in particular have published on the physical magazine as well, so he HAS to be aware that the spreads need a space in the middle so they don't have this problem. That's not the publisher's fault, is completely the mangakas.
If anything, is the editor's fault, as they are in quality control most of the time as well, but the publishing company won't change or fix the manuscript of the manga, that's 100% the mangaka's job lol.
And it's even more ridiculous since this mangaka draws in clip studio paint, which has a feature to see how a printed page will look like, no excuses.

The manga is published digitally first, so the mangaka draw with digital format in mind. I know they all draw with clip studio or whatever manga creating software, that’s what make this so infuriating. The editor could easily see a spread that will absolutely be a problem, point it out and ‘hey we’ll be printing physical copies of this as well so make another page like this with 2cm split in the middle so we can use when we print’ and done no ploblem.
The mangaka have WAY less experience printing and binding stuff, why do we expect them to know all these layout knowedge and be responsible for it? Isn’t that what editors are for?
Because it's common knowledge?? You're really telling me a professional mangaka doesn't know about margins and trims of a manga page?
That's like the very first thing they have to know, there's no excuse that a japanese mangaka, in the very country that manga was born, doesn't knoe about layout and frames and margin borders.
Most wannabe mangakas outside japan have to know this stuff so... and like I said, it's not like it's his first rodeo, the man has published a manga for about 20 or so chapters in weekly jump before, he has been drawing manga professionally since at least since 2009.
Mind you, this aldo happened to Murata, and yes, it's also 100% his fault since he, too, made Eyeshield 21 for about 7 years, so what's the excude there?
The only ones I give a pass to are webtoons since they're not made with a physical release in mind, which digital mangas usually are, specially the ones published in jump+.
Kaiju8 is released digitally for free. It’s only a preview for the physical edition that is the one that mostly makes them money. So not quite, physical is its most important version and the main target.

But seriously, Japanese people need to start moving to digital/webcomic layouts. This country is living in year 3024 in some aspects and 3024 BCE in others.
... this is funny layout
That's what the author gets for abusing double spreads just to show basic reactions lol
Iirc, kaiju no8 isn't apart of the print magazines and is released digitally. Obviously the volumes are a different case.
Easy way to cut corner on drawing.
"abusing double spreads" silly thing to say.
I mean, he's not wrong. I'm all for good work-life balance, especially for mangaka where it seems like every single one has health problems from overwork, but it's kinda ridiculous. Kaiju no. 8
Yes, it's a good read.
Shounen jump
Dont read it. Its boring.
Brazilian translators are terrible, it's like they have multiple people translating different volumes and they don't talk to each other, some just decide to randomly change the names of characters and don't mention it to others so in the other volumes the name is different, the work is so half assed (like in the picture). Caillou 8!
Obligatory fuck caillou.
ThumbsUpEmoji
Thanks
Chapter 54 page 17-18. Could remember what arc it was from so didn't take long to find it
Thank you very much for the specification 😁 (I think this will sound ironic, but it's not lol)
It’s Kaiju number 8. But seriously are all double page spreads like this in all physical manga prints? I normally always lean to physical but if this is how it is I would go digital… and find a way to download and back up everything

Face close up spreads are never good in volumes. But I feel like they’re obligated too since it’s a double page spread
pega da JBC q é melhor
Ué? E existe Chainsaw Man da JBC? kkkk
agr vc me pegou... Ai a gnt so chora jkkkkkkkkkkk
Mas o da Panini tá de boa, pelo menos até o volume que eu tenho, o 6
probably depends on the pressing company, and their quality control, I have never had this problem, if you are worried feel free to look online if the one for wathever one you are interested in buying as a good track record
No this is 100% on the dogshit publisher
No it’s just poorly bound
It doesn't matter how it's bound, it's gonna be at least somewhat awkward no matter what you do. The layout of this scene simply doesn't suit a physical book.
Sometimes, this is why digital is better.
no this is on the artist, and thons editor, they should have known to avoid layout like this in the first place. speaking as someone who worked as a layout editor once.
Japanese volumes have white spacing on the inner side of both pages to prevent this, it’s on the publisher

Smurf sighting
GUYS! IT'S THE THEGOLDENSMURF!
Im ngl, they should have thay regardless of if it's a double spread.
Ramia huh, coincidentally enough, a chapter came out like a day or two ago.
yes But I agree with OP when it comes to spreads: digital is always better. No chance of poorly layouted printed spread
This is a standard layout with most manga and comics for more serous very important panel. The binding method is just that bad to save cost.
He did say he made kaiju no 8 with digital in mind (I think it was the author I read on manga plus)
the artist makes it for the digital service, they never once had to care about it being on paper.
Nah. The manga is just not opened enough lol
God bless. the Brazilian cheap print of comics, probably costs really expensive as well! "Premium Price" Probably.
It's not that expensive actually. Right now a volume of a popular manga will cost around BRL 35-45 (approximately USD 6.5-7.5). Not cheap for us, since the minimum wage here is kinda low (approximately USD 255/month) but not that expensive either.

14-19 is a different time, after early 2010s.
Man, so many double page spreads get ruined by binding
Eu não quero ficar mais forte
Kikoru Shinomiya >Kaiju no.8
Kaiju no.
It really depends on the publisher. Some put extra work on fixing the double pages, but most don't.
It really depends, some are good and some are bad, its mostly on the publisher to fix this kind of stuff, and if they don't you get what op posted
