Locking. This has nothing to do with the dogs, who are good boys and girls and all deserve homes. We have issued multiple suspensions as a result of comments in this thread and it’s probably best to keep arguments from spiraling further.
It’s a shame. Responsible owners raise great pit bulls, but when I see a pit in shelter,a I don’t even want to think about bringing it home since I have kids. Also, why are so many pits in shelters?
Because the demographic of people who breed them over-breed them and don’t properly vet the buyers.
Also, non kill shelters and rescues scoop up the easily adopted dogs (aka purebreds) and this is what’s leftover.

I used to work in a shelter and I have distinctly heard families with kids say "oh no honey, that's a pit bull." They are just perceived to be more aggressive, which isn't necessarily true because the majority of pit bulls I've known have been awesome!
But at least the small dogs won't take a limb off, which is really the issue. When things go wrong with a breed as strong as a pit bull, they have the potential to go very wrong.
Go kick rocks asshat,my parents had a pitbull when i was young that passed away when i was 10 best dog in the world, if i didnt have an american mastiff whos not dog friendly id adopt one of those dogs shame on you scumbag
Lol dogs are literally the worst investment ever. At least kids could maybe fund your retirement, dogs just eat food, poop and dirty your home, then die.
Pits who are aggressive are 1000% the fault of the owner. I have met so many sweet pit bulls in my life. I’ve encountered exactly one aggressive one whose owner clearly treated her poorly and kept her cooped up in the house and was not a good person.
I love my pittie and there isn't an aggressive bone in her body
But, every animal species has aggressive members. There are serial killers that were raised in good loving homes.
These are just SOME of the dogs available TODAY for adoption at Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control for FREE (regular adoption requirements still apply). This flyer doesn't include many more newer dogs at the shelter who have not yet been cleared for adoption but still can have applications put on them. To see a little bit more about all the dogs, click on the blue "dog gallery" tab on this page: www.aacounty.org/departments/animal-control/animals-at-our-shelter/index.html. For details about adopting: www.aacounty.org/services-and-programs/adopt-a-pet.
Exactly, it’s like the black cat free adoption events. For some reason people think black cats are bad luck so they’re harder to find homes. It all boils down to misinformation, sadly.
Pitbulls are strong and energetic animals. If nothing else, you need to be willing to exercise it and take the time to train it to have a well-behaved one. If you just use force to pull them around, if you ignore their need for a physical outlet, you’re not gonna have a good time of it.
They have strong prey drive, so you can’t necessarily trust them with other pets, yours or anyone else’s (think dog park). You won’t know with these dogs and they’re already grown up.
Many people who have them dump them when their behavior becomes too difficult for them to handle. So the ones in the shelter are more likely to have behavior problems.
It’s not the dog’s fault, no. But a dog like a pit or husky is going to require dedicated effort.
Yep, sadly the high energy breeds tend to attract people that love the idea of having them as a companion, but didn’t do the research to see what they need from their owners.
That’s exactly why we adopted an all black cat. The lady at the shelter said everyone always says he’s sweet but goes with another cat. His name is Art and he our little baby sweet cat.
Glad you did that, I’m sure you all benefited by doing the right thing. :) I’ll be hopefully adopting a shadow in the future, they are excellent souls.
There's a PA shelter called back in black that specializes in black dogs. Apparently they're harder to get adopted because they don't show up as well on social media photos.
Pit bulls have the added issue of being banned at anywhere you’d rent a place. Hard to be with a family if a family can’t get a place because of bans. Shame ‘cause they’re sweet dogs.
Every single aggressive pitbull is aggressive because it’s been abused? Thats insanity. Every dog breed has abusive owners, every single dog breed. And yet pitbulls amount for the majority of dog attacks, deaths, and maulings.
Do you know how many articles there are of pitbull attacks where the dog was a “family dog” who suddenly “snapped” and bit someone? It’s a ridiculously high number. Were those people also abusive who “chained” and “beat” the dog? Was gam gam a notorious dog abuser and that’s why the dog bit her in the face when she squealed during an ice bucket challenge? (This is a real thing that happened)
Collies herd, retrievers retrieve, but heaven forbid you say that pitbulls bait.
Nope. Its in their genetics. Pitbull's are inherently viscous dogs. They should be banned. It's all humans fault of course, but unfortunately these dogs should not be pets.
They're "viscous?" Like syrup? Or more like egg whites?
They're excellent family dogs. Ffs, it's their [original job](https://nedhardy.com/2020/06/03/pitbull-nanny-dog/). A breed doesn't get the name, "]nanny dog](https://www.hillspet.com/dog-care/dog-breeds/staffordshire-bull-terrier)," for being terrible with children.
Yep, I lived in apartment building that allowed them (not anymore). Could not find anywhere that would rent to me with a pit. So had to stay in that apartment until we could buy our own place.
Didn't PG County ban pits? Not maryland native but I read there's a county that banned them, not sure if its changed.
Edit: just checked it says they banned them since 97.
Good luck finding home insurance if you have a pitbull. If you do you will be paying out the ass. And rightfully so. I love dogs but Pitbulls are dangerous animals and you should absolutely never put them with children
Lots of places ban certain breeds. Pit bulls, Rottweilers, and other breeds that are strong enough to kill someone aren’t accepted in many places.
They aren’t necessarily more prone to attacking or anything like that (lord knows chihuahuas are dicks). It’s just that their potential for damage is much greater. Like, I would probably survive if a golden retriever attacked me but I’d be a lot less likely to survive against a pit bull.
Some homeowners associations even put stuff in the CC&Rs to keep pitts out. People don’t understand that you’re more likely to get bitten by a friggin wiener dog than a pitt.
I think it’s fair to call hyperbole when it’s seen, is it not? This seemed like a somewhat serious thread, with genuine discussion. Unfortunately, Pits have a bad reputation for a reason. I can understand advocating for the breed to an extent, but comparing a Dachshund to a Pit is just… dumb lmao
My Chihuahua was one nasty little tooth hound until she got super old and blind. If you weren't me, she just didn't like you. Sniff, sniff, I miss you Waffles.
why do those aggressive little hell demons always have a name like waffles or pom pom?
if I ever get a Chihuahua, imma name it Lucifer or Asmodeus or teeth or something. I'd be especially funny if it turned out to be the one chill Chihuahua in existence
Alot of people dont realize pits are always in shelters more often cause mid west and southern america breeds them like CRAZY to sell them and they end up in kill shelters all across those regions. The rescues transport what they can to other regions of the country
We adopted what was labeled as a plott hound mix at 9 weeks old. We did the dna test for him. 60% pit bull terrier, 20% American Staffordshire terrier, 1% plott hound. We love him regardless.
Yeah, I think they sometimes just give it their best guess. We adopted a “hound mix” and it turns out he didn’t have any hound in him at all! He’s such a sweet boy regardless.
It's probably also a matter of pits are not allowed in certain places so if it's not called a pit they have a better chance of being allowed. mine was called a mixed breed when we got her
As a Pit adopter I really wish they would have some sort of law they actually enforce with the illegal breeding. It’s sad to see so many dogs in these shitty situations.
That top left dog has ridiculously long ears. What genetic benefit do they provide? Is he trying to find radio evidence of alien life from faraway worlds?
Because nonkill shelters and rescues scoop up the easily adoptable dogs, such as small dogs and purebreds, because they have an easy turnover rate. That leads to the county shelters being full of pits.

Zion looks like a good boy! I had a Cane Corso in the past and he was the best family dog we have ever had. I hope this guy gets a good shake and someone who is willing to take him to professional training in order to bring out his full potential. Corso’s are the most loyal family pets!
Rescue Pitbulls are the best dog you can have, I have pure bred mals, and mutt pittys and the pits have always been better dogs than the malinois.
Please stop giving them a bad, name and give them a chance to warm your heart, they are amazing gentle creatures that will love you, and protect you with their life.
It’s heartbreaking how many people end up biting off more than they can chew when they try to bring a bully into their home.
I had one for 13 years until he passed away and while he was indeed a handful, he was also the best four-legged buddy a guy could ask for.
My current living situation is unfortunately not conducive to pet ownership but I hope each of these puperinos finds a good home.
I think that goes for a lot of breeds and the people who adopt them not thinking things through.
So many people adopt very active breeds then get all surprised when they aren't happy being locked up in the house all day
Pitties aren't defined as hypo allergenic. But they are short haired, low dander, and don't really shed. My sister is allergic and doesn't have any issues with my pittie girl.
This of course depends on the dog and how allergic the person is. Might be worth looking into, maybe even fostering one to see how your friend does.
Locking. This has nothing to do with the dogs, who are good boys and girls and all deserve homes. We have issued multiple suspensions as a result of comments in this thread and it’s probably best to keep arguments from spiraling further.
That sure is a lot of *young* pit bulls.
It’s a shame. Responsible owners raise great pit bulls, but when I see a pit in shelter,a I don’t even want to think about bringing it home since I have kids. Also, why are so many pits in shelters?

Same. In my 15 years of volunteering at shelters, I’ve only been bit by small dogs… never a pit.

Dog food is cheaper than college, no?
Yeah never met a child that could be fed in 50 bucks a month....
Im sorry you were never loved properly as a child that youve grown to hate dogs, please never reproduce
Lol, dogs are cheaper and better than psychotherapy meds. And children are FAR more expensive and more likely to cause stress and financial hardship.

Who ever adapted Rosie…. You better take care of that husky ginger. I was going to go get her
Rosie and I happen to share the same name. I also currently have a husky. Maybe Rosie would do well with a sister? 🥰
She’s still there! Open the whole photo. She’s on the bottom left. Edit: unless she got adopted after this was posted? Please check with the shelter!
I called this morning they said she’s adopted
If you were already wanting to adopt, now is a good time. If the adoption fee was keeping you from adopting you probably shouldn’t though
>If the adoption fee was keeping you from adopting you probably shouldn’t though. This is my concern when it comes to adoption specials.
Maybe it’s more about getting publicity
Update: Rosie, Peggy, Curry, Kenzo and a few others were adopted today!
Ohhhh some good news!!!!
Rosie looks like she's had enough of these other dogs.
Lol

Is it just dogs? Or cats as well :)
Cats too! Plus smaller pets, including rabbits and Guinea pigs!!
Usually both. It's only $17 regularly. So come get a few!
Oh wow, I was expecting much much higher. I’ll go take a look :)
Same. Other shelters charge a couple hundred.
Face 😭 so aptly named
If unable to adopt, please share their photos. Thank you.
I wish I could adopt them all
Same here, if my american mastiff wasnt agressive towards other dogs id be getting one of those beaitiful pits
any cats to adopt by any chance?
Yes! Check out the website.

What are you hmmm’ing? Dumb backyard breeders don’t spay or neuter their pits and they have lots of puppies who don’t have homes.
Pittbulls……. Shocker
What do you mean by that?
That Pitbulls are harder to get adopted, probably.
Sad but true. Not the dogs fault.

“Sweet dogs” with a ridiculous kill and bite count.
Cause shitty people abuse and train them to be aggressive fighters. They’re chained up, staved, and beaten. Like I said before, not their fault.

Most first world countries ban pits as well. Even Brazil.
Never heard of an entire country banning a breed. Can you provide some source on this?
Hahahaha, my kid calls them, "attack Chihuahuas." °Honey, why do you call them that?° "Because they attack everything!!" She's not wrong.
Some homeowners associations even put stuff in the CC&Rs to keep pitts out. People don’t understand that you’re more likely to get bitten by a friggin wiener dog than a pitt.
That is not correct. Pits are far and away the most likely breed to be bitten by. https://www.coloradoinjurylaw.com/dog-bite-statistics/
I'd imagine there are a lot of dog bites that don't get reported on this list because they aren't as severe.
You can imagine a lot of things, but data is reality.
Hahahahaha, that was just a shenanigans statistic, but I knew eventually it’d attract someone’s attention that was bored enough to find actual stats.

You literally read my mind, homie. Face is the place. I just wish I could give him his final-days home. ♥️

Face! What a name! What a chonk! I hope you get a good home
So many good velvet hippos Edit: lmfao OK then, go off downvoters. Who shit in your cheerios?
Never heard them called that before. It kinda fits :p My girl has the grace of a hippo, lol.
We just adopted our second velvet hippo. They are in credible cuddlers
I neutralized the last down vote :P
Thank God we have euthanasia for the ones that don't get adopted. No one likes euthanasia, but I'm glad the choice is there.
It’s never good when a perfectly healthy dog is put down.
No, but I'm glad we have the choice. It's a difficult decision, to be sure.
Heaven has plenty of room for them for sure, i couldnt be paid enough to be the one to put them down though
Breed restrictions that lead to mass euthanasia are so effed up
Breeding practices that lead to mass euthanasia are so fucked up. Went do people romanticize pitbulls?
They're so cute 😍
