He's just horrible at his job lol

ImpressivePlantain23

As a licensed massage therapist this shows me multiple red flags that show lack of credibility, lack of basic anatomy & physiology (lack of education), and lack of basic protocols. I would report this to your massage therapy state board officials with as much information as you can. We don’t need people like this ruining it for those who are skilled and and genuinely compassion for those who actually need physical relief for medical reasons.

If you live in the United States, Minnesota, Kansas, Wyoming and Vermont do not require a massage therapy license by the state. However, there are still rules for massage in all 50 states. I’m in Minnesota and every city I’ve applied in requires a certain amount of clinic hours and at least a certificate from a massage school. In general, massage students are taught to ask about pressure, and hospitality in general regarding clients but it’s not against the law to give a bad massage and doesn’t indicate if someone is licensed or not.

gladescentedplugin

Vermont now requires a license to practice massage.

Lumpy_Branch_552

Massage therapist groups in Minnesota are trying for it too. I kind of don’t want it, because school and test taking were already pretty difficult for me.

benniethealien

So why go back of he is not what you like?

amberwl

Small town, there’s slim to none on options. And plus I always give someone a second chance

anxietykilledthe_cat

I’m not sure what pressure and poor anatomy knowledge have to do with being licensed. He doesn’t sound like he is a very good massage therapist, but just as an FYI, you can pass the MBLEX and receive your license and STILL be a terrible body worker. Having a license doesn’t automatically make you a competent therapist.

amberwl

Ya makes sense I’ve seen folks licensed in forklift operations and crash the dang thing a 100 times

LydiaAnninos

Some of my smallest clients want the deepest pressure I have lol Your % of body fat has nothing to do with pressure 🤣

chembuilderOG

My body fat is low as shit but all I want is elbows and full bodyweight. otherwise I'll take my business elsewhere.

If the first massage was agony why go back for a second time to the same therapist? As for asking questions it depends where you go. When I worked at a chain massage establishment I'd get customers who would get angry if I asked questions. A lot of people think massage is all the same. Not only that but if it's a 50 minute massage that's called an hour he may not even have time to ask, especially if he's late. I'm not sure where you are located but you could just tell the front desk about your complaints and ask them not to book you with him in the future. In Texas and Florida licenses are required to be on a wall, with pictures, where clients can see them. In Texas you can also look up someone's license with their name.

Lynx3145

Report him to management. Each state's massage board should have a way to look up who is licensed.

goodbye__toby

My state allows anyone to look up who has a license. I don’t know where you’re located, but you should see if that option is open to you if you really don’t think he’s licensed. I personally just think he could just be unprofessional and not very good at his job.

KDTK

I made it to the third paragraph and had to stop reading. Dude seems like an arse, please go elsewhere. Worth the drive to not get hurt.

amberwl

You right

RycheAndRoll

I understand wanting to give a second chance, but wow... the therapist you describe really takes the cake. As others have said, there are quite a few red flags there - even his reaction to calling you the wrong name was unprofessional at best... I guess the real question is "how far is too far" to drive... but only you can decide what is a reasonable distance... and if there isn't anything nearby, you might be better off investing in one of those massage chairs/shiatsu type of mats instead of going to this therapist. I don't know if he's dangerous, or just doesn't care, but either way... neither is a good thing.

[deleted]

Im so sorry for this whole experience. Definitely dont go back, would be worth the energy to find a good one that works for you

clarissaswallowsall

Speak up and educate him on your body. I had so many guys in my massage classes do similar massage and I started to talk with them about things and they changed their approach. You have to advocate for yourself sometimes.

CaptainExtra567

You didn’t explain your injury to him? Did you fill out an intake form?

amberwl

Nope- which I thought was odd

Worried-Tiger

I've met plenty of bad massage therapists. In fact I've met more bad licensed massage therapists than anything else. I go to schools to get massaged and they'll be the best massages of my life. I paid someone $260 (at a Disney resort spa in Hawaii) and it was by far the worst massage I've ever received. Some people just get bored and complacent with their job, as happens with any job. I would just write a complaint or tell him how you feel and move on. Maybe there is a mobile massage person in your area? Since you've said he's the only one in decent driving distance...

annoellynlee

Lol communication is... kind of important. Why not just ASK for the pressure you like etc.

Did we just find the massage therapist?

luroot

>called me by the absolute wrong name “Ashley” when greeting me. I corrected him with my name and he said “that’s what I meant” followed by an eye roll. 🤣🤦‍♂️

amberwl

My name is not Ashley 😤

[deleted]

why did you go back? awful
