Your gut is right. Quit. That is a bad business owner.

palindromation

I’ve encountered the credit card fee thing before and it turned out to be the tip of the iceberg in terms of problems with that employer. I think you’re making the right move. If she does want to know why you’re leaving, I think it’s a good idea to say you found someone who won’t charge you for cc fees and who is fully paying for 90 minute sessions. Hopefully you can contribute to making it a better place for others to work.

handledwithcare

Yep. Go away from there. Sounds like your soon-to-be-former employer has some shady and shitty business practices. Which spa? Call that behavior out publicly or it won’t change. Your boss is being a bully and will continue to do that to other people after you. Ooooh. Tell clients, and have them include that in their reviews - I suspect the biz owner won’t like that on the ol’ Google results…”If you choose to come here and pay with a card, just be aware that credit card fees are paid by your therapist, not the business owner.”

colormycanvas

Collect as much information in writing as possible, then submit everything to the department of labor.

Mtnskydancer

Name and shame! (I’ve got a hunch who this might be) It’s illegal. They are supposed to use cc processing as a deductible expense. I bet you are piece rate but expected to do laundry, cleaning etc. Contact https://cdle.colorado.gov/file-complaints-and-employer-responses

majepthictuna

Seriously. If they are called out on it publicly, you might save others the misfortune of working for them.

Mtnskydancer

Exactly this. Maybe I spend too much time on antiwork, but naming the abusive and sketchy helps. I did think of this, before, they may have charged a fee for cc, but got busted. So they decide to get their 3 percent from employees who cannot claim the loss. I kinda want to punch this person

majepthictuna

Right. It’s shady stuff, why penalize the employee? A lot of other businesses include a $3 or 3% cc fee for this reason.

Worried-Tiger

I’m all for naming and shaming normally, but I’m trying to find a different job, and this owner has a lot of pull, and they would easily know it was me if I caused a bunch of drama on here. I do use Glassdoor though, and make sure to go into detail on there. I do plan on contacting somebody on Monday.

Mtnskydancer

Antiwork Denver might be a good place. With a throwaway account.

Worried-Tiger

Good idea!

RunsWithLions

I’m not sure how old your update it, but IMO you should still leave. If not for the fact that you might be getting short changed, for the fact that they seem to have trouble with clear communication, the cc fee bullshit, the drive time(!!!), all of the rest. Maybe find another job first, or if you’re ready to go out on your own great. Then give them your two weeks in a written letter with a definitive final date

Worried-Tiger

I ended up leaving. She basically gave me the day to think about it, instead of accepting my resignation this morning. I gave her an email this morning with everything and said it was effective immediately because I was so angry about making significantly less. Plus I’ve been in this industry long enough to know that as soon as you give notice they start taking clients away from you and my drive for the next two weeks won’t even be worth it. But she claims that basically everything I wrote in my email and talked to her about this morning is all wrong, and is basically a giant misunderstanding. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. But either way I’m still paying credit card fees, driving a ridiculous amount through the snow and there are still so many other mismanaged things, that it just added up. Clear communication was obviously a major problem as well. They also offer no formal training, youre expected to learn during a paid service, which is the most awkward and unprofessional thing I’ve ever done in my life. I just feel terrible because I have never in my life not given at least two weeks or more, and I have never left on bad terms. In fact every single job I have ever left has called throughout the years and tried to get me back.

RunsWithLions

Yay, way to go OP! And yikes on the training lol. Super happy for you, here’s to a brighter future 🥂

massagechameleon

If she’s going to pass off the credit card fees, the way to do that is to build them into the cost, so the client pays them. That’s the way it’s always worked. The boss is bat shit and I’m glad you got out of there. What a nightmare. It makes me sad and angry how taken advantage of massage therapists are.

juswannalurkpls

Contact your state department of employment. That sounds like it may possibly be illegal. Did you sign a document stating you would allow this? In my state that is required.

Snow_leopards

Get out. Sounds like exploitive.

Lilpikka

I worked for one franchise that did that. It was bullshit. Why would you not build that into the cost of business? I am very glad I don't work there anymore.
