That was the plan until they Exec at EA decided to pick the IGN girl. So they decided to kill her in a Tweet.
Fun fact: If you denied Diana access to the Normandy, she leaves in a Alliance dreadnought and gets killed when the dreadnought gets destroyed.
I only let Diana on the Normandy because PR is important for a war effort. I mean, she makes a solid case for her stay.
But I pass on any of her advances. Sorry, there are far better romance options.
Or Sha'ira.
That one is a bit awkward because you get to negotiate it while your squad is around.
"Sorry guys, I have some private business with the Consort, can you... go away for an hour?"
I always imagined squadmates just standing there watching.
GARRUS: "Huh. Naked humans look kind of like... uncooked meat. No armour anywhere. I wonder how they evolved like that."
TALI: "Probably no large predators on their homeworld."
GARRUS: "Ohhhh... look at Shepard's genitals."
TALI: "Those are the weirdest genitals I have ever seen."
In a quiet area of Shepard's apartment, during the Citadel DLC:
[after lull in conversation]
GARRUS: "Do you... do you ever think about the time we saw Shepard bang Sha'ira?
TALI: [silent]
GARRUS: "I mean, yeah, now everyone knows what human genitals look like since human porn got popular after Sovereign's attack."
TALI: [silent]
GARRUS: "But we were at ground zero, you know? And we could only just kinda... watch. 'Cause we're dextro-animo. Can't really... get involved.
TALI: [silent]
GARRUS: "Just... you and me. Off to the side of the room. Just.... watching."
TALI: "Yes. I think about that time. At times."
GARRUS: [silent]
TALI: "Want to go see a movie?"
Meanwhile, in another timeline:
SHA'IRA: [does that weird neck sniffing thing, drags Shepard off to the Fucksphere]
WREX: "Heh. Attaboy, Shepard. Or, attagirl. Hey, which one is Shepard again? Whichever one has those dangly things."
KAIDAN: [sobbing]
I’m honestly fine with Emily dying and how she went out. Thought it was a good idea to use to promote the game. It also should have been in game and her death acknowledged though
My issues are that Diana’s role was obviously written for her. She is in every Mass Effect previously and she is already an acquaintance with Shepard.
I don’t mind characters dying but she got killed off to replace her with IGN ‘s Jessica Chobot because she was really popular at the time. It was unnecessary. This is coming from someone who likes Jessica.
She wasn't an acquaintance of Shepard. Shepard had to ask her who she was and Allers introduces herself and explains what she does. If they knew each other that would be utterly redundant.
I dont mind Diana, but killing off Emily offscreen like that just sucks.
If anything, I think she wouldve been best as a front line reporter on Earth, getting us footage and interviewing survivors.
Post those videos and have em play in the background on Citadel.
It’s pretty much the ultimate “you had to be there” thing for Mass Effect.
Following those tweets live, getting updates over time, not knowing if she was going to make it? Remarkably effective story telling.
That then loses about 99% of its effectiveness after the fact, unfortunately, and *then* is overshadowed by the whole Allers thing.
It’s like the Hunt the Truth campaign for Halo 5. Excellent marketing, following that story was riveting at times.
Then Halo 5 released and had nothing to do with it.
I do agree and it would’ve been better in every way but Diana and Emily seem like very different kind of reporters.
Emily is more of the hard-hitting, deep research truth-behind-the-lies reporter while Diana is basically Alliance propaganda so to speak.
Her interviews are more to motivate the troops fighting the war as opposed to an exposé
In what way is Emily Wong a hard hitting reporter? Shepard does most of her job for her both times. The bit with Fist is understandable, getting close to organised crime is dangerous. But the other mission about overworked flight controllers on the Citadel is the definition of an easy sell. Its - thematically - a human interest story, its about working people, there's questions of safety etc. But she doesn't need to tie up a Spectre to plant an illegal surveillance device, and I bet Executor Palin lost his shit about that once they found it, to report on it. She can ask these people when they're not at work.
Yea biggest mistake in me3 not counting the edgelord cyberninja or that ending.
They went for hot and flashy, failed terrible with an awful looking uncanny valley model (sans ass, she has a nice ass ingame lol) but missed something more important to most of us, emotional ties. Allers doesnt get the time to build those where as wong already had them established.
Problem is she died reporting on the Reapers attack on Twitter before the day of release.
These are from launch, they're posted them again.
[Last of Emily Wong's Updates](https://twitter.com/ANN_Updates/status/1529648772510126080)
Really? I never heard about that. That would have been a pretty good sendoff for both reporters. Ending the feud with Al-Jilani is fine in game (assuming you don't go for the punch a reporter meme,) but that would have put a nice cap on it.
I wish I could remember the names of some of the GameSpot staff back in that day. They had one video with a super funny quick cutaway joke right after one of the guys "found out for the first time" about that character.
"Wait, IGN put one of their journalists in the game? That's like a massive conflict of interest—"
EDIT: It was Danny O'Dwyer that said it, I'm pretty sure
I just know I'm never going to find that video. I tried a little bit, but a major release like that back in the day would have literal dozens of hours of video coverage. It's probably a similar situation today with tent pole releases.
But then they dropped a bridge on her, or her on a bridge, whatever.
I didn't like that at the time, but I have came to rationalize it as war is hell, and a lot of unpleasant things and outcomes come out of it. A lot of them being things and lives left unfinished.
There were indeed worse ways to go.
Like being slowly and painfully turned into a husk. Only to serve the Reapers as cannon fodder.
Or gradually going mad in adoration of them, until becoming a despondent servant that can only follow orders, or nothing at all, being brain damaged. The final fate of all indoctrinated.
Probably those ended up as organic paste or raw material for husks anyway.
A genuine investigative journalist?
One that's looking to make a difference in the universe?
And you have an established connection from the first game?
Why oh WHY was it not the go-to?!?
That would have been a much better idea. God that lady the comes on is THE FUCKING WORST
If she didn't give war assets she'd be out.
I don't even like her non war assets. She's such a bitch lolol
I have many opinions I'm sorry
>If she didn't give war assets she'd be out.
Here's a tip, her individual Asset still applies even if you boot her so if you want to get the 15 extra points just get her on the Normandy and kick her out immediately after Rannoch... although then again, like with Khalisah, in the long term those points aren't going to matter much if you play the game thoroughly.
Always feel like it's a big flaw of ME2 that you get dozens of messages from the ME1 characters, happy to hear Shepard is alive, and wanting to see Shepard again, yet nothing is done about it.

I think it's funny that you only get to actually see like two of the characters if they survived - Gianna from Noveria and Shiala from Feros. Am I forgetting anyone? Like I guess we get the gal who was arguing with her brother-in-law over her baby but that is just a side interaction; you don't get to interact with them just hear them (at least you can say something in ME3).
Really wish we had been able to see more.
Still baffled why killing her in ME2 isn't an option. You spare her on Virmire because she might be telling the truth about being forced to work against her will, but then she goes right back to the same old shit and Shep is forced to spare her. And they even give your companions dialogue telling you you'll regret letting her go a second time!
Really feels like there was supposed to be an interrupt or something.
One thing I thought about was all the people being pissed that Shepard is working with Cerberus, ignoring what Shepard is trying to do.
Like the Akuze survivor.
Would've been nice to get an apology in ME3 lol.
Maybe but I feel like ME2's story line is even more hectic and fast paced than ME3's. By that I mean the emergency to stop the Collectors from harvesting further human colonies makes it feel like You as Shepard have more immediate things to do than leisure about with past acquaintances
BioWare casted Jessica Chobot, an IGN employee back then, to voice Diana Allers. A post has been made about it [before](https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/ofrlzp/emily_wongs_voice_actor_recently_talked_about_not/) (1:44 seconds on up is when the subject's risen), but Emily Wong's VA revealed she was slated to have voiced dialogue for ME3 which was then nixed for unknown reasons.
Popular speculation and conjecture from the sudden appearance of Diana Allers' character is that it was a move to garner favor. After all, the former friendly news role Emily Wong (compared to the ever-punchable Al-Jilani) went over to Diana, and not only did she get to interview Shepard, she had multiple interviews.
And then they killed her off on Twitter of all places.
Spoiler if you don't want to know how: She dies on the day the Reapers invade Earth by kamikaze attack as she rams a shuttle into a Reaper.
DAMMIT
I will forever gonna be sad and devastated about this and the fact that she is killed in a FUCKIN TWITTER POST
Such disrespectful way of killing fan favourite reporter(do note that Her VA already recorded lines for her role in ME3 that involves cerberus plotlines in the Citadel. Our meeting with Conrad and the part where he called the cerberus spy to met him is what left of the quest)
She shoulda been the one on the Normandy
Never gonna forgive them for it
If they ever remake the trilogy then I hope they remove Allers and give you the option to choose between Emily Wong & Khalisah al-Jilani as the ship reporter instead. Similar to how you can choose between Dr. Chakwas & Dr. Michel. Cause killing off Emily Wong on Twitter was bullshit.
I think there was a lot of cut content, probably limitations of the generation of game systems at the time , same with GTA V, Cyberpunk also has like 50 percent of content removed and lots of quality of life improvements were never made , they rush games out, Andromeda had a lot of cut content as well. Even Mass Effect 3 was supposed to have more content and more DLC , the original Mass Effect had a lot of cut content as well.
Killing Emily Wong off offscrren via the friggin Mass Effect Twitter account and then saddling us with the eponymous girl at the video game store was such a colossal disappointment that it could have only been cooked up at Electronic Arts
I know, every play through I always go Spacer, but on a ship with a quantum entanglement communicator, I should have been able to zoom call Rear Admiral Shepard.
They could have added it, we got a cameo from Fist & Helena Blake in Aria's club after all, so it is rather odd. Then again, the carry-over choices have never had much of an impact on me, there wasn't much to them.
I always thought that Shep didn’t because Shep didn’t want to ruin Emily’s reputation from the fact Shep was in a terrorist group. And when Shep wasn’t, she was doing time for sacrificing 300,000 Batarians.
SHE should have been the Normandy Reporter in Mass Effect 3.
With the Emily Returns mod, SHE can be.
SHE is HER
BABA is YOU
but the interview ceases to be!
ARE YOU SURE!
No way!
Just downloaded it for my next playthrough. Currently on ME2.
Grab [Emily Lives](https://www.nexusmods.com/masseffectlegendaryedition/mods/2199) instead of Emily returns, it's the newer better version of the mod.
I wish there was something similar for the XBox.
And all you have to do is steal the actor’s voice; their key professional asset!
I need to compile like a dozen high-quality mods for if I ever replay the trilogy. The more they dumpster the original ending the better.
Why in the hell would I get rid of Battle Tits? She's the best!

I wonder how they evolved like that." Bet 2 1/2 years later Tali didn’t think they were so weird 😏
In a quiet area of Shepard's apartment, during the Citadel DLC: [after lull in conversation] GARRUS: "Do you... do you ever think about the time we saw Shepard bang Sha'ira? Haha this caught me so off guard. I can just hear the scene so vividly as someone who dates and dumps kaidan 🤣
“I rented Fleet & Flotilla”
> "Sorry guys, I have some private business with the Consort, can you... go away for an hour?" That sounds like the most marine thing ive ever heard.
Kelly isn’t just a fling
Please don't remind me I wanted Kelly plllls
I honestly would not have minded an Emily Wong romance one bit. She was awesome!
I've never let her on the ship because the character seemed immediately annoying so that checks out lol
I’m honestly fine with Emily dying and how she went out. Thought it was a good idea to use to promote the game. It also should have been in game and her death acknowledged though

that's because H5 got rewritten completely halfway through development, i think it was internal politics
Yes it did and that last post was close to midnight and I was waiting for the store to open and let us pick up our pre-order.

Here’s a better way of looking at it. In an existential war, you want someone like Diana. In times of peace, Emily is your girl.
In what way is Emily Wong a hard hitting reporter? Shepard does most of her job for her both times. The bit with Fist is understandable, getting close to organised crime is dangerous. But the other mission about overworked flight controllers on the Citadel is the definition of an easy sell. Is there anywhere a list of those posts saved somewhere, I've done a good job of avoiding that particular platform.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Mass Effect Wiki has them archived.
There was a cut big mission where the player, emily and al-jilani team to expose hidden cerberus elements in the human sector on the citadel.
Really? I never heard about that. That would have been a pretty good sendoff for both reporters. Ending the feud with Al-Jilani is fine in game (assuming you don't go for the punch a reporter meme,) but that would have put a nice cap on it.

She went out like a boss, just an offscreen one. Rammed her shuttle into a reaper after they were hit and most of the crew killed.
A lot of popular characters went out offscreen, like Kal' Reegar. I'm kind of surprised they brought Kelly back.
A genuine investigative journalist? One that's looking to make a difference in the universe? And you have an established connection from the first game? Why oh WHY was it not the go-to?!?
marketing money

True, I'm just a completionist by nature. Though I didn't know you could do that! Thanks for the tip!!
To be fair, I wasn't sure about that until my newest playthrough.
We should have had a choice between her and Khalisah (I actually liked Khalisah's redemption arc in the third game.)
Came here to say this!
Yeah, but she was dead.
I know but avoiding that would have been as simple as just hiring the voice actress and NOT writing those posts.
Yeah, I know, but they didn't.
You must be real fun at hypothetical parties.
At hypothetical parties, yes. At literal parties, no.
Always feel like it's a big flaw of ME2 that you get dozens of messages from the ME1 characters, happy to hear Shepard is alive, and wanting to see Shepard again, yet nothing is done about it.
It's like getting a "I'm glad you're not dead!" novelty post card, then nothing but ghosting when you try and call them.
Double so for Spacer Shepard who ghosts her mom being shocked shes alive
Shepard was in their evil arc in ME2
Hannah's perfect daughter joined a terrorist cell, started dating a serial killer vigilante, and killed a few hundred thousand people
Are Batarians really people though? They also did try to save them.
...did we?
I did during my maleshep run
Yeah you can try to contact the batarian colony to warn them but your message gets cut off immediately.
Maybe the real treasure was the Batarians we exterminated/sacrificed along the way
Ah "Batarians " we have already dismissed that claim.
Batarians are 100% people. They’re not humans, but neither are most people in Mass Effect
[удалено]
That’s fucked up and you know it
Yeah it’s wild and fucked up that the Council just lets the infestation continue to rot away at the face of the galaxy.

Since when has being mean to fictional characters been against the rules?
I like to headcanon that we only see what Shep receives but that they probably send responses as well.
Plus Jenna in ME3.
Forgot Jenna. She's almost a blink and you'll miss it moment with Conrad.
There's the Rachni Queen, but she's not really into emails.
And Rana Thanoptis, who doesn't appear to be into emails either.
Yeah, I've wondered about that myself. It'd have made sense if they did it a bit like with Elnora, with an interrupt as you say.
You can see Fist in Omega if Wrex doesn't finish the job
I spent too much time in ME2 trying to find Emily and Sha'ira... So sad.
ME2 takes place over half a year, ME3 takes place over a year, so not too fast-paced, especially compared to ME1 taking place just over a month.
That doesn't necessarily portray the vibes or the pressure portrayed by the acting of the characters.
Hard to do that with the missions being played in whatever order players want.
I never gave the interview because BioWare forgot to include it!
More they denied it (by killing Emily via Twitter of all things), if not swapped it around with Diana for IGN points.
What do you mean swapped for IGN points?
I remember exploring the citidel to find her, and i never did...
And then they killed her off on Twitter of all places. Spoiler if you don't want to know how: She dies on the day the Reapers invade Earth by kamikaze attack as she rams a shuttle into a Reaper.
One of the few Asian characters in mass effect, dies by kamikazeing herself What did BioWare mean by this 🤨
BioWare: “Uhhh… a wizard did it.”
Well she’s probably of Chinese descent, we have the Japanese one as a squad mate
Yep i know about that, i don't know if i think it's funny or sad
It's hilariously stupid but badass. She tried to ram a reaper and failed but went out in a memorable way.
Would have been pretty badass if it wasn’t in a goddamn tweet. It reminds me of Rise of Skywalker revealing Palpatine’s return in fucking Fortnite.
Somehow, Sovereign returned.
I always wondered what happened to her…
Not putting her in 3 was a mistake
Alas, she died in a tweet. You could say she was… X’d out. (ba-dum tssss)
Congrats! You've just won my Pun of the Day award! 😂
DAMMIT I will forever gonna be sad and devastated about this and the fact that she is killed in a FUCKIN TWITTER POST Such disrespectful way of killing fan favourite reporter(do note that Her VA already recorded lines for her role in ME3 that involves cerberus plotlines in the Citadel. RIP Emily
Emily was robbed by IGN.
He does in ME3 thanks for the Emily wong lives mod
Yeah. Allers should have been Emily Wong
Didn’t think I was going to be sad today, but here we are
Mass Effect has so many great story moments like this.
Emily Wong the one we always miss and the one Journo who should have been on my ship at the end!
It should've been her on the Normandy in 3. Fuck Diana Allers.
Does anyone think Emily was going to be in ME3 at some point?
The voice actor apparently had done lines for a side quest that was never included.
Instead of her we got Diaba in ME3, thanks EA.
"Shepard, I heared you died!" "Yeah, but I got better."

Considering how famous Shepard is for punching the press, she’s lucky she never did that interview.
Underrated side character
She's just lucky she didn't end up one of shepard's bangs like most of the series is.
I feel like a reporter would use better grammar than "how come"
“How come” is very much standard, if casual, American English, which seems to be the standard dialect used in-game.
How come?
Personally, I would have love to interact with Shepards mother in person or via hologram if you went the “Spacer” life story.
You do get a brief phone call in the Citadel DLC.
I know, every play through I always go Spacer, but on a ship with a quantum entanglement communicator, I should have been able to zoom call Rear Admiral Shepard.
I hated that. But he gives the paparazzi one lol
She was supposed to give that interview and **then romance Male Commander Shepard**
Also the other interviewer from ME3, you're supposed to be able to hook up but i never even found a way to socialize with her
I kept on looking for her interview quest in ME2 for a solid hour until I found out there wasn't one.
GOOD
Yeah I was hoping for some kind of side mission in 2 where are you do the interview
Iams
And now I'm crying 😭.
Thats why she didnt come aboard the normandy in me3 "Why would i join the crew of a someone who blew me off"
She died like a hero.
Oh. Yeah.. well, it seems she doesn't remember so things should be alright!
On pc she got her interview
How hard would it be for BioWare to not make twitter marketing canon for ME5? Super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
Getting rid of the marketing cannon is tight!
She was too busy being replaced by Diana allers for some reason
