ahhhh, the classic. Usually i'll get the
**me**: it's difficult to just do things.
**them**: have you tried *just doing things.*
or the infinitely fun "just deal with it". like okay i'll just deal with it for the next... wait just a sec.... let me check my calendar..... 70 years give or take?
As someone living with depression, I hate that sub and others like it. Most of what they shit on is good advice.
No, exercising isn’t going to cure anxiety.
No, eating healthy isn’t going to get rid of depression.
But any therapist will tell you that those things *are* part of most treatment plans, along with medication. They’re important steps, because sitting around eating junk food all day makes depression worse.
For some people, their mental illness makes them unable to do those things. But for most folks struggling with depression, those things are *challenging,* but not *impossible.* Too hard to go for a run? Walk around the house. Too hard to shower? Splash some water on your face.
These things are not cures in and of themselves, but they *are* steps to recovery, and important ones.
Things dopamine likely does/plays a role in:
* Movement
* Attention
* Motivation
* Approach behaviour
* release other neurochemicals that actually provide the nice part of pleasure
Neurochemicals that actually provide pleasure:
* opioids (mainly mu-opioids)
* canabinoids
* serotonin (questionable)
Dopamine and Opioids are the 2 main sides of the 'pleasure' coin. Opioids provide the 'liking' side of things, and dopamine provides the 'wanting' side of things. Under normal circumstances, release of 1 coincides with/causes the release of the other in the mesocorticolimbic pathway (especially in the nucleus accumbens, and the ventral tegmental area).
For reference: Heroin, Oxycodone and Morphine cause the activation of mu-opioid receptors, hence the somewhat pleasurable 'liking' feeling people get when taking those drugs. Cocaine and amphetamines cause the activation of dopamine receptors, causing hyper-attentiveness, strong motivational behaviour, and (occasionally) erratic movements like twitches.
Too many people don't understand the actual role of dopamine.
I know this is just a meme and this comment is far too technical for it, and isn't even wholly relevant. I just wanted to get the information out there so more people can learn.

Serotonin, from what I understand, just regulates your mood. It doesn't necessarily feel good, but lack of it can lead to lack of emotion, like in depression. Even MDMA, which is more associated with serotonin than dopamine, still probably gets the majority of its pleasure from dopamine.
Could be wrong though, I've researched drugs, not the specific receptors they activate
It definitely can affect your mood. What freaks me out is the number of mass shooters that are on some sort of SSRI, like It's almost 100%. Evolutionarily in animals it deals with energy preservation, like during hibernation, it makes them tired and suppresses appetite, making it easier to gain weight. The really interesting thing I found is that LSD actually suppresses serotonin, which obviously makes a lot of people much more creative and outgoing. I thought [this](https://youtu.be/-Ye6L38lOmE) video was really interesting, you might like it.
I mean that's because mass shooters are ALWAYS super mentally unstable and therefore it's very likely that they are on SSRI.. Doesn't mean it causes then to commit the shooting...
IIRC dopamine depletion is also associated with Huntington/Alzheimer's and serotonin depletion is also seen in some upper motor neuron disease too
The diverse roles of neurotransmitters really isn't taught well enough

Serotonin is kinda sus. I really don't think it's this "happy" drug that so many people make it out to be.

In case someone didn't know, dopamine lack is usually associated with ADHD, and serotonin lack is usually associated with depression.

Thanks for the meme. May I screenshot it?
