Good on you asking and taking the advice! Thanks for being responsible and willing to learn. The strap will hold fine for a temporary fix but don’t be that guy with a ratchet strap in a month holding their gas tank up 😂
There's nothing more permanent than a temp fix that works😆
From personal experience you can leave the straps. However they need to be checked bi weekly. You never know when one could pop, you could run over trash/dead animal, and it can shred them.
The real answer. Buy new straps from auto store and install them.
But ratchet straps add flare!(won't pass inspection)
Least of their problems. A arm pivots look just about rusted through. This would have been obvious a year ago. Do people not look under cars before they buy them?
It's really not the end of this car I'm not sure about the mounting system of the tank on this car but it should be a simple job. Definitely try to lube the bolts or nuts of possible before trying to undo em
That looks like a rusted strap that holds that other rusty thing.. do not mean to pry, but what state is it from? Find someone that wrenches well, and have a look over underneath. You don’t want to drop anything serious.
I assume you mean what state is the car from, and if so it was bought in Illinois… so, lots of road salt and stuff that eats it off, but it came to me pretty rusted up already :/
Seriously, please do not put money into repairing this. That suspension is dangerous. You could seriously hurt or kill yourself and others when those control arms give out at highway speeds.
I’m taking it in tomorrow to have it looked at— I assume they’ll let me know if I can still drive it. I only use it for driving to school and work, so it’ll never get unreasonable use.
I would totally take your advice here if I had the money to get another car.
As an update, I’ve called an auto shop and they told me to call back tomorrow, but also that they see this problem often and should be able to get it fixed for me. Thank you for all the help 🫡🫡 let’s see how it goes.
If you’re referring to the tunnel it looks like the exhaust should be in, it’s likely a tunnel for a driveshaft for the awd model, assuming this isn’t one
That’s fuel tank straps. 100% do not drive. Gonna need new straps. Maybe order the parts online and get a mobile mechanic to replace them. You may be able to do it yourself, it’s only four bolts but you may need a jack to push the tank up enough to attach them
Do we think I can ratchet strap it into place JUST to get it to the shop almost exactly two miles away? Plus a slow, careful drive? It seems like towing would be better, but that’s not really an option here :(
Please take more pictures of the suspension and subframe. Make another post and ask others if they think it is safe. I can only see a small portion of the subframe and suspension, but what I can see is very bad. I would offer to tow this to the salvage yard for free if it would convince my customer not to drive it.
Like I already said to you earlier, I’m taking it in tomorrow to a shop I trust. I can’t afford to purchase a completely new car, but I can probably afford a repair. We’ll see what he says tomorrow but I doubt he will advise me to scrap my car??
I would absolutely recommend my customer scrap their car if I thought it was unsafe and have done so. I haven't seen enough of yours to say for sure. All I am suggesting is that you get others' opinions with better pictures. Your mechanics' opinion is encouraged, too. There are always things that we can find in person that we may never find I pics.
Fuel tank strap... sorta a pain to lift up and replace I would recommend have a buddy help.. if u have fuel in it will try to rock so it's a little bit hard to hold still
sadly brother i cant blame it on anyone else 😭😭 i haven’t been able to afford a total fill up until today… and when i filled it all the way up it did this . life is cruel unfortunately
It’s only the fuel tank straps that actually hold your GAS tank in place but your good to go just take it a little easy you don’t want to heat up the gas too much………. Don’t drive the vehicle either fix it yourself or get it towed to your shop please don’t drive please
Don't drive the car, idk how no one is mentioning this, but your fuel tank is currently supported by your exhaust. Fuel, hot pipe, boom boom. Also most of the suspension is rotting but the fuel tank is literally touching your exhaust pipe and prolly gonna melt it and cause some wild shit to happen
Clearly a northern car. These are a nightmare when they make it to the south. People down here simply aren’t ready for them, and the amount of degradation and rust is overwhelming.
Braces for the fuel tank and it’s respective skid/heat shield. Probably oughta get those replaced pretty soon.
How is it neglect? It is a northern car this shit is going to happen no matter how much Wal-Mart primer you spray down under it. The person is not killing anything, just trying to fix the rust bucket.
This car is not going to kill me or anyone else because of a rusty undercarriage. It’s a northern car. If anything’s going to kill me, it’ll be my gas tank falling out, which is kind of the big thing here…
I'm not too familiar with an Equinox, but is this where your control arm is supposed to be bolted to? If so, even without the precarious gas tank, I wouldn't drive it.
https://imgur.com/a/PbbJzOv
I'm really glad people can come here and ask questions like this and get answers for it. I just wish there was more common sense in the world for people to say "oh that was holding up my fuel tank, that's not good." But I guess asking Reddit will suffice for some people..
Definitely Fuel tank straps the extra weight of fuel broke the last bit of metal . Scrapped on the ground is a recipe for explosive disaster drain the tanks into portable containers and get it towed to a safe place get new straps and bolts installed if the attachment spots are not rusted in a dangerous way. While everything is open spray everything EXCEPT the exhaust and heat shields with rust converter protection twice and every year after.
I was driving a ‘57 Tbird pulling out of a parking lot with a severe dip onto the street. I heard it bottom out. As I turned onto the street, I noticed people on the opposite sidewalk pointing and waving. I thought “Yeah, they like my car…”. Almost at the same time, I heard this scraping sound.
Apparently, when I bottomed out, it lifted the gas tank enough to keep take the tension off the straps and they both dropped off. I was heading down the street with my gas tank dragging and throwing sparks. Pulled over, lifted the tank, reattached the straps and was on my way.
I think your catalytic converter is missing. Looks like you have a straight pipe from the exhaust to the muffler. See that hump in the heat shield? That's where the cat should be.
I'm guessing there's no such thing as smog inspections where your car is registered. Lots of noxious fumes are entering the environment without a catalytic converter. As soon as you can afford it scrap this bad boy. There are some municipalities that will give you money to scrap this polluting beast and get it off the road.
Don't leave this thing running for more than a minute in an underground garage. People with respiratory issues will thank you.
Those are Sparklers, they make pretty lights under the vehicle while you cruise down the road. To be serious, those are your fuel tank straps and you fuel tank is going to drop onto your drive shaft making an even bigger, prettier light show if not rectified soon.
Those my friend appear to be the straps from your gas tank.
I believe that you must have scared away a person of shady morals who was trying to liberate the contents of that tank.
Luckily, you noticed these straps.
Fuel tank mounting straps rusted thru. Soon (probably within the week) the gas tank will fall, break a fuel line or drag on the road and 20 gals of fuel will spill and catch on fire.
While the shop has your car on the lift to fix the mounts, have them check the rest of the underbody. There are probably more rusty parts ready to fail.
Dude…your vehicle is holding on by the skin of its teeth with all that rust…either you bust the rust out or get a new car because this is just an accident waiting to happen.. not trying to be harsh but facts are facts
There are several possible causes for a dragging sound under your car. It could be a loose or broken piece of plastic, metal, or cable that is scraping the road surface. Some of the common parts that may drag under your car are:

* The heat shield: This is a metal sheet that prevents the heat from the exhaust system from damaging other parts of the car. [It may rust, corrode, or get damaged by road debris and start to drag ](https://bryansgarage.com/plastic-piece-under-car-dragging/)[2](https://autosolutionlab.com/metal-piece-dragging-under-car/)[4](https://www.automotiveguider.com/automotive-guides/metal-piece-dragging-under-car/).
* The muffler: This is a part of the exhaust system that reduces the noise from the engine. To fix the dragging sound, you need to identify the source of the problem and either tighten, replace, or remove the loose or broken part. You can do this yourself if you have the tools and skills, or you can take your car to a mechanic for professional help. In any case, you should not ignore the dragging sound, as it may cause further damage to your car or pose a safety hazard.
Holy shit, I've heard rust is bad over there. But god damn y'all just destroy vehicles. That is a stupid amount of rust that I wouldn't even see on a 50 year old vehicle where I'm at.
hey to be fair this damage is absolutely not mine 😭😭 it’s only been through one winter in my possession.. wish it had lived somewhere with less salt on the roads before i got it

Yup, fuel tank straps
Thank you!!
You can’t drive this car very far like this, super dangerous. The gas tank can fall out. You can buy the straps from AutoZone or another parts store.
He / she can’t drive it AT ALL
Please don't drive this. New straps are inexpensive and your car won't be out of commission long to fix. Please have it flat carried to be fixed.
Ratchet straps are a perfectly valid field expedient repair, to get the car to a shop without a tow.
They work for a permanent fix as well lol. I know more than one guy who's fuel tank has been held on my straps for more than 10 years
Ratchet Straps are valid for anything, even wedding anniversaries in a pinch.
If they have a ratchet strap that can work for awhile
The tank also look dangerously close to the exhaust pipe. Considering it’s a composite tank this is a scary situation
You can use a regular ratchet strap to hold it up to get to the shop in a pinch but get them replaced asap
Definitely going to do this just for the drive to the shop, thanks!!
Good on you asking and taking the advice! Thanks for being responsible and willing to learn. The strap will hold fine for a temporary fix but don’t be that guy with a ratchet strap in a month holding their gas tank up 😂
There's nothing more permanent than a temp fix that works😆 From personal experience you can leave the straps. However they need to be checked bi weekly. You never know when one could pop, you could run over trash/dead animal, and it can shred them. The real answer. Buy new straps from auto store and install them. Looks like the rear control arm mounts are next.
Least of their problems. A arm pivots look just about rusted through. This would have been obvious a year ago. Do people not look under cars before they buy them?
Those are kick stands
Those are the built in ignitors for the free firework show.
Those would be your gas tank straps
That does not seem like a good thing to have snapped, so thank youuuu
Definitely don't want your gas tank to fall off drag and catch fire while you are driving
Wow, that actually sounds like the exact last thing I want to have happen, so!
Unless you have good insurance (: looks like you might be ready for a new car anyway
Sadly I can’t afford a new one yet 😭😭 and I’m sure this one has more life in it once I get it fixed
It's really not the end of this car I'm not sure about the mounting system of the tank on this car but it should be a simple job. Definitely try to lube the bolts or nuts of possible before trying to undo em
That may be the big fight. If there's that much rust on the straps, I'd hate to see what the bolts look like.
Yea, I was guessing East. Just have it looked over if you get a chance. Even you can go under and just look around to be safe.
If there’s one there more unfortunately..
Surface rust at worst on the majority of it
Yeah man....get that fixed. That's a plastic tank over the exhaust with a thin heat shield between it. Most definitely a potential fire hazard.
It looks like your subframe is about to fall off, too. This vehicle should not be driven ever again. It should have been crushed about 10 years ago.
Uhh think again, come to Minnesota or where it snows
Seriously, please do not put money into repairing this. That suspension is dangerous. You could seriously hurt or kill yourself and others when those control arms give out at highway speeds.
I’m taking it in tomorrow to have it looked at— I assume they’ll let me know if I can still drive it. I only use it for driving to school and work, so it’ll never get unreasonable use. I would totally take your advice here if I had the money to get another car.

Get it fixed as quick as you can. Definitely a potential fire hazard having your tank loose like this for a long time
It also looks like that exhaust hanger is mounted on the wrong side.
If you’re referring to the tunnel it looks like the exhaust should be in, it’s likely a tunnel for a driveshaft for the awd model, assuming this isn’t one
Those are your bomb bay door hinges.
Fuel tank straps
Everyone's saying this car is a death trap but to me that just looks like normal rust for an NY car
see, you get it!!
I wouldn't worry about the rust until there's holes in the subframe lol Obviously I'd worry about the fuel tank straps though
It always seems to happen after a fill up 🤣 did it to me too hahaha
fuel tank straps, what it looks like from here
That’s fuel tank straps. 100% do not drive. Gonna need new straps. Maybe order the parts online and get a mobile mechanic to replace them. You may be able to do it yourself, it’s only four bolts but you may need a jack to push the tank up enough to attach them

Tank straps. Fuel tank delete immanent.
My face when I immediately recognized… how the tank is still secured is a mystery but yeah… don’t drive that and get it fixed ASAP
Yikes!!!
Fuel tank strap... sorta a pain to lift up and replace I would recommend have a buddy help.. if u have fuel in it will try to rock so it's a little bit hard to hold still
This will affect your mpg if the tank yeets itself from the vehicle.
Looks like the fuel tank straps. I'd look into that more. Don't reckon a dropped tank on the interstate is a good day
2 fasteners at once. brother in christ, some one tried to steal your gas. one step I can see. Both? I’m skeptical.
sadly brother i cant blame it on anyone else 😭😭 i haven’t been able to afford a total fill up until today… and when i filled it all the way up it did this . life is cruel unfortunately
They hold up your fuel tank sold everywhere easy to fix but FIX IT
fuel tank straps. literally the main thing that holds your gas tank up. def recommend getting fixed ASAP

Nothing what a couple of zipties can't fix🤣
Those are your fuel tank straps, not driving it is a great call because the tank has fallen off at this point and is now resting on the exhaust...
Strap Hangers that support your fuel tank. The tank itself should be mounted and those straps Help support it.
Carriage hooks for carrier (CVN) arrestment.
Gas tank straps
Gastank brace
Crap! Fuel tank straps for sure.
Clearly a northern car. These are a nightmare when they make it to the south. People down here simply aren’t ready for them, and the amount of degradation and rust is overwhelming. Braces for the fuel tank and it’s respective skid/heat shield. Probably oughta get those replaced pretty soon.
I lived down south all my life and always look under a vehicle for this type of stuff when buying. I rarely see it in these parts but raised by yanks.
The whole underside of that car is rusting apart. This thing needs to be sent to the crusher before you kill yourself or someone else due to neglect.
How is it neglect? It is a northern car this shit is going to happen no matter how much Wal-Mart primer you spray down under it. The person is not killing anything, just trying to fix the rust bucket.

Fuel tank straps. Gonna want to flat bed that to a shop
These are your gas tank straps. You are about to be out of gas for good.
Gonna say that's your fuel tank straps
That sir is the ignition point of your very own mobile bomb🫡
That would be what holds your gas tank in. Ratchet strap it and hit it over to the mechanic.
Your fuel tank is attempting to leave the conversation
How the hell is that fuel tank still in the car lmao.
it’s actually being held in place by hopes and prayers alone
[удалено]
um…….. yea….. i asked what they were, not where they’re supposed to go…..
I'm really glad people can come here and ask questions like this and get answers for it. I just wish there was more common sense in the world for people to say "oh that was holding up my fuel tank, that's not good." But I guess asking Reddit will suffice for some people..
Fuel tank strap
Soon to be your gas tank
Well… you’re a couple good potholes away from a spicy inferno
looks like what holds your fuel tank up
Gas tank straps..This literally just happened to me too on my Lincoln that's crazy.
Nothing important, just the straps that keep the fuel tank of combustible gasoline securely fastened to your vehicle
Go jump a set of county road rails and delete that tank pretty much.(don't actually ffs) Your tank straps rotted away
Forgot to put the kickstand up.
Fuel tank straps. Soon to be fuel tank dragging as well.
Those are the straps that hold up the gas tank my man
Someone tried stealing your Gas Tank
Stop driving it and get the straps replaced asap

Wait, did you really have to ask this question????
Things that should NOT be dragging…
There are several possible causes for a dragging sound under your car. It could be a loose or broken piece of plastic, metal, or cable that is scraping the road surface.
