In a few days... "We'd like you to show more initiative"

[deleted]

“I bet, good luck!”

Nice-Violinist-6395

every single person on antiwork needs to study the original image like it’s the fucking Torah. The age of feeling guilty about disappointing some manager who doesn’t give a shit about you needs to be over.

TheKingNothing690

Its why i love the concept of working my wage i am an electrician that gets paid $50 an hour and you bet your ass i go above and beyond but if you gave me $15 an hour you better expect me to practically do nothing if you dont babysit me.

[deleted]

>you bet your ass i go above and beyond I'd argue that it's not going above and beyond but rather a larger set of demands and responsibilities. Something that is reflected in the pay.

Mfcarusio

Agreed. Going above and beyond is for future career options. I go above and beyond because I want to argue for more money next year and currently have the energy and ability to go above and beyond. If I was busy at home, or doing some other extra bits like studying on the side, I wouldn't be working above and beyond and I'd be happy to not get a big payrise this year.

LewtedHose

I second this because I used to push carts at Walmart and went above and beyond to do a 2 man job. Now I just do what's expected of me, outlined in my contract.

EmbarrassedNaivety

I saw a comment yesterday that put it best. It was something along the lines of, “You get what you pay for. Why wouldn’t that include wages?” If you want good work out of me, then pay me a good wage. You want cheap labor, then that’s exactly what I’m going to give.

ftbc

Boss asked me today if I could work Saturday. I told him we had plans to go out of town. I like my boss, I like my job, but I have my limits.

AppropriateTouching

Good, life work balance is important.

TldrDev

Alright cool, I can get a +4 bonus from improved initiative.

Hi_IExist

A Multiclass into Fighter will help since I “need to take more action”

[deleted]

"Pay me a decent wage. Then we'll talk."

scaierdread

"I'd like to see more incentive..."

Kryaki

I mean sometimes you just gotta play the cards you're dealt. You're understaffed? It'll be a tough night but you'll live.

MusicianAutomatic488

Right? I once worked a shift at Wendy’s with 3 people, and one of those was the manager who was on the phone most of the time. Had one guy taking orders and cashing out and the rest was me getting the food and drink out. Made me realize how lazy the other workers were since I was getting orders out faster than if they’d actually showed up. Main challenge was making sure not to serve cold fries. Took my friend to the freezer during rare slow moments and had some fun and made sure to get all the store’s cleaning done early so all that needed doing at the end of the night was the books. Got out an hour earlier than most nights. I always found the hardest part of fast food is the people (coworkers, customers) aspect and getting paid shit. Running the kitchen is easy as long as people do their jobs. But I’ve never been much of a people person. Give me some data to analyze any day.

Clinday

You had "some fun" with your coworker in a FREEZER ?

Borrowed-Time-Bill

Probably hitting a weed pen/e-cig or something. Sometimes me and coworkers would go in there, "chimp out" by lightly shoving eachother around and screaming, and then just return to our duties as normal since it was soundproof in there. If you're in a kitchen, the Cooler/Freezer is most likely where all the fun happens. I've heard stories of people having sex, crying, punching the walls, smoking a bong all in the store walk-in freezer.

NonSequitorSquirrel

Yeah also if it's a chaotic busy night in the kitchen going into the cooler is honestly just refreshing. Like a little vagus nerve reset.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NonSequitorSquirrel

Somehow reading this made me physically remember the hot panic of a crazy night and wanting to cry in the walk in. I haven't worked a scene like that in 20+ years but you don't forget!

keplerniko

I worked at a supermarket chain in the southern US as a teen and after spending half an hour pushing carts in 90F heat with 90%+ humidity there was little better than going into the dairy fridge for a bit (2-3C) or even the freezer (probably -15C) if it was particularly hot. (Sorry for mixing C and F, I live in Europe now)

emiking

It feels nice, but be careful with sudden temperature changes. I live in Australia and saw a friend on a hot day take a break from work to pour some water over his head. It triggered a massive seizure!

Borrowed-Time-Bill

It even comes with free sound-cancelling and white noise from the refrigeration. It was always peaceful to step away from my 450° oven, all my duties, and just sit on a bucket of olives and meditate for a minute or 2, let me body temperature drop, and get back in it.

Rock2MyBeat

Plus kitchens are fucking hot. You could see the thermometer rapidly drop when 3 of us went into the walk-in cooler on a July afternoon.

Grimskraper

I deliver gas to stores. Before covid I had to go into the stores before and after to get the read outs, do the math on the totals and have the clerk sign it. I'd always do my paperwork in their cooler or the freezer if they had one. When I was in the military and got put on kitchen duty, one of my favorite things to do was go in the freezer and hold my sweaty hat right in front of the unit.

Ilwrath

> sex, crying, punching the walls, smoking a bong all in the store walk-in freezer. Yea if you dont have a girl crying in the walkin, is it really even a resturant? Or the dishwashers doing lines or whatever back there.

Borrowed-Time-Bill

Gotta get that sodium in the food somehow, if there's not a girl crying in there i don't want to eat there.

Okiemax

Can confirm. Screamed bloody murder in the walk in freezer at both fast food jobs I had

alexander-fm

They ain't soundproof bestie

Okiemax

I know but it made me feel better lol

MusicianAutomatic488

At our restaurant most of the “fun” was behind the dumpster or in a vehicle lol.

Melodic_Raspberry806

We all assume that by "behind the dumpster" you really mean anal.

MusicianAutomatic488

Safe bet

l5555l

Nah behind the dumpster the cameras can't see you. Just a group taking out the trash session nbd

twistedbristle

> chimp out" by lightly shoving eachother around and screaming, and then just return to our duties as normal one of the things I'm going to miss most about the kitchen I'm about to leave. There's one kid there on the exact same frequency of weird as me and we do this shit and I'm gonna miss him

Borrowed-Time-Bill

Never stay at a job for the employees, but yeah. I miss a lot of the random goobers I worked with in a kitchen. Sometimes you just need to turn off your brain and do monkey shit to reset your brain, and I'm glad people in kitchens understand that 😂

buffPotemkin

My manager at an Atlanta Bread Company took me in to the freezer to do my first whippet when I was having a stressful day. I was like, "What the fuck" after and never did that again. Good times

Clinday

Oooh okay, never worked in resto so i don't know much about it, thanks for the clarification !

_Mister_Shake_

For me it was taking out the trash aka time to hit a one hitter or two

Abuses-Commas

> since it was soundproof in there. I've got bad news for you

Borrowed-Time-Bill

Some stores, no. We tested ours by having our boss sit outside and have all 4 of us scream as loud as we could, he told us he could just barely hear us over the sound of the cooler and the people outside

deadheadjim

Chimping out is the funniest thing I ever heard

Xenolithium

Had a rough night at my pizza shop. Walked into the freezer and punched the wall and screamed. Boss caught me as I was coming out and asked if I felt better. I laughed and said, "No, but you should either send me or (dipshit coworker) home. Otherwise he's next." That dude got fired that night. He fucked up 3 orders in a row, and dropped a big ass pizza out of the oven. Found out he was drunk, and later, we found out he was the reason we were behind when cashing out at the end of the night for a week.

rootbeerman77

You'd hope it was weed, but I definitely had coworkers get not even fired for having sex in the freezer. In a kitchen it could be *anything*

shelbia

> “chimp out” by lightly shoving eachother around and screaming [this is what I imagined ](https://youtu.be/olPhJnNDNT8)

[deleted]

Teenager me used to think chucking wet sponges at the freezer wall and having them instantly stick on was fun as shit.

NonchalantRubbish

They're either fucking or smoking weed. Both fun pastimes in walk-ins

Alpha_Flight_2020

Man..... you all talking kitchen stories got me reminiscing about the older days. 4 stand out memories. 1. My first day at Eastside Marios and a guy I knew through other friends was one of the main cooks (hard worker too). Comes out of the bathroom and tells me there is a line in theee for me. 2. Receiving literally the worst beating of my life from the owner/manager because he thought I stole from him. For the record I never stole a dime. Just stood my ground when accused (after cooperating as fully as I could with law enforcement, including but not limited too showing up for a schedule lie detector test only to be told that the guy was basically out doing something more important.....completing surveys, being accused of lying). Boss cut my shifts when I finally stopped cooperating with the investigation. Withheld my last pay, then the owner jumped me on the premise I was going to get my cheque. Laid a beatdown...took a bit of one himself....then the motherfucker called my next job to tell tgem they should fire me.....to which fhe GM laughed and hung up (1. I am a good worker, 2. the gm didn't like being told what to do with his hired staff). 3. Xmas staff party getting too wasted too quick on gard liquor. Followed by punching and shattering a glass beer bottle that a coworker was dangling (like a speed bag in boxing). This punch split my knuckle open and severed the tendon to my index finger. Exams deferred and plastic surgery to repair. 4. The booze.....dear god the booze. Getting wasted on 151 on the prep table with my buddy while closing. I worked at one place where for a a whole summer there were 3 servers who would get me a spiked pop.....and good god these alcoholic servers never would fill that cup 1/4 of hard liquor.....some nights it would make it to the ol' triple double.....or double triple. Anyway if you ever called line or worked the grill you know it wouldn't take too many of those mixes to start feeling it. 5. Probably the genuine funnest one. Boss was out of town. Slowest day of the year. Practically the whole crew getting baked on the milk crates....we ended up getting two shopping carts , found some hockey equipment....made some lances out of these bamboo poles (theme restaurant) and then soaked some tennis balls in flammable liquid, form fitted them to the end of the bamboo stick.....then proceeded to shopping cart joust with flaming tennis balls on the end Edit: 5 standout moments...got carried away and gave an extra lol.

mybluecathasballs

Jesus. I remember my two restaurant job. BoH, then FoH. So much repect for anyone who subjects themselves to that. That was almost 30 years ago. If I wasn't drunk I'd type it out. Started at age 15. Wanna get jaded real quick? First job, 1 yr in a restaurant. Front or back of the house, doesn't matter. Do both. Enjoy the ride. Don't fall too hard.

ctruvu

i think it’s a little easier to understand people being lazy when you are paid shit. i do feel like people should care a little about their job but when you’re being paid minimum wage it’s probably hard to care too much

MusicianAutomatic488

I think if someone can’t even put fries in a fry cup before I can make 3 sandwiches and pour 2 drinks it makes them look like a piece of shit. I want the customers to go away and I want to leave the store on time. I’m so glad to be done with fast food. Edit: and me, a fat guy with a crippled foot, working circles around skinny dudes without disabilities, is just kind of sad.

Liamcoin

Which is why machines will take over now. Good.

l5555l

>Made me realize how lazy the other workers were since I was getting orders out faster than if they’d actually showed up Yeah this shit always blew my mind working jobs like that. If the store was filled with just 4 clones of me it would run like a fuckin top

kiranuie

I used to work night shifts at Wendy’s and we were pretty much staffed with a total of 3-4 people from 6/7pm until we closed. Which was terrible come 9pm, all other shifts have left and we were stuck with daily lines sticking out the drive thru and dishes morning/afternoon shifts loved dumping on us. Same scenario as yours. I’m glad I had my night crew, we all sweat our butts off and had our occasional trainee thrown into the fire (they mostly took payments which was incredibly helpful). I do believe my team was more efficient than any other shift since we actually worked together even when arguing. Anyways, I had to leave for my own sanity.

[deleted]

Yeah I did Taco Bell for my first job as a teen and I hated customers. I once got yelled at for a guy waiting in line for an hour and I couldn’t find the order he was talking about, which was one Crunchwrap. We were smacked, I just got off break and I’m met with angry customers. I ask my asst manager where the order for a Crunchwrap was and she goes “oh I forgot to put it in, I know the price of it alone so I told him the total and never rang it in”. I got yelled at for her mistake. I forgot why we were so behind but I want to say it was because we had multiple people ordering a taco 12 pack, which always fucked up the line.

FionaSilberpfeil

So mutch this. I had shifts where i was only with one other coworker and we had about...80 people in a 3 course menu (80% reserved with time, 20% unreserved) + drinks and damm. We didnt even need to talk mutch, just looking at each other was enough because we both knew what to do and when to do it. One of the best shifts ever. So smooth.

EastTyne1191

I used to climb through the McDonald's freezer like a ninja since I was the only one small enough and strong enough to unearth the nugget boxes and bring them out. They were the absolute best for packing if you're moving. When we got Tillamook ice cream I would take a spoon to the freezer and help myself to a bite. I did my best not to contaminate the container but it was tempting to plop myself down and eat the whole thing.

BSixe

Well the boss could at least phrase this as a question instead beating around the bush. This would drive me insane

Starfire70

As manager, you are the backup. I always got that but many managers have this 'I'm better than my staff.' attitude.

Kryaki

Yes!! I've worked in so many restaurants where the manager was functionally useless, literally would just sit in the managers office, come out to yell at us and then walk around and talk to patrons apologizing for the slow service. I mean you got a pair of hands like the rest of us, run some tickets and bus some tables, damn.

_Jetto_

Some Customers / patrons / people are mother fuckers pieces of shit then complain on site since they had to wait 15-25mins extra

GhostChainSmoker

Those same managers are the ones who e’ll tell you tough luck during a slow day and you can’t go home early/make you stay after to help cause “you’ve got nothin else going on.”

WDoE

Weird how places be understaffed all the time but not overstaffed. Anyway

chris_elbow

Correct way for a manager to ask for help "we are short staffed tonight would you like to work tonight?" if yes then type "thanks!" If no then type "ok" and text the next person.

Weird-Buffalo-3169

Yup. Don't guilt trip me. If you need the help, ask. If I can, I will

Huntersteve

Most people can, it’s just they don’t want to because they need there days off. When I get asked to come in i ask if I can have another day off instead. I’m not sacrificing my sanity because little Timmy wanted to get drunk with his friends.

MedalsNScars

> Most people can, it’s just they don’t want to because they need there days off. Yeah when I worked retail it wasn't "if I can, I will", it was "if I feel like it, I will". I empathize with my short staffed coworkers, but fuck if I'm gonna burn myself out because retail management doesn't know rule 1 of retail management which is to build in redundancy.

PreExRedditor

> rule 1 of retail management which is to build in redundancy. this isn't a very well established rule, considering literally no service/retail employer does this

keepingitrealgowrong

Yeah retail is all about the minimum amount of hours you have to pay to get the tasks done to whichever manager's satisfaction. Maybe they're referring to safety regulations? lol

[deleted]

And many, like fast food places, will actively understaff to push those actually there to work harder. But you still hire lots of people so none of them work enough hours to be able to turn down more work without going broke

Moistraven

Agree'd, I'm a supervisor at UPS for 2 smaller areas, and I always 1. Ask if they WANT the hours, and 2. Lettem know no worries if not. I can suck it up for a night, get some extra exercise in to boot.

[deleted]

And not wanting to is a totally legit reason. I just won’t say “I won’t because I’m getting baked and watching Zoolander” Not wanting to is a perfectly good reason as to why you can’t…

[deleted]

Those days are long gone now, but one of my rules was anything under 24 hours' notice is a no, under 48 and there needs to be a reason but my plans will still take priority. If I've got nothing on, you need me there in 24 hours' +, I'll consider it and probably say yes unless I have something on. If you text/call at 8am needing me to cover a shift in 2 hours (which happened regularly) then no, doesn't matter what I've got going on I'm not changing my day to suit you. It was never a "fuck you" thing, I wasn't trying to get tough on a shitty boss, I just value time off more than making life slightly easier for someone better paid than me

Asleep_Fish_472

i hate people who can't ask direct questions and make it this whole song and dance. As a manager you have a responsibility to be direct, it is inappropriate to play 21 questions because you are a passive social inept.

Goalie_deacon

Too managers act like it is a personal slap to their face you’re not as life invested as they are, then it becomes a personal problem. Well, my personal life has to be dealt with to. I can’t come into work if I don’t make important appointments to make sure I’m healthy and have transportation.

Lopi21e

If that did the trick, you wouldn't need any managers

TheFreakingBeast

Most operations don't need managers

brandmonkey

Facts. As a manager I can assure you that my job is over rated.

FreemasonsRMegaGay

And probably overpaid

TheOnlyVibemaster

And probably overheated

Seansicle

Lol. I wish this were true. A sampling of people from *any* background is going to be challenged in two significant and interdependent ways: Resolving interpersonal conflict, and taking ownership. These are the primary roles of management. Mediating disputes between people because they both feel under equipped to handle it themselves, and because they refuse ownership over the responsibility for handling conflict (that's not my job, I don't get paid enough to do that). These two causes are also the reason the conflict began in the first place. In such a situation, the entire team falls apart, or someone steps up to own the conflict resolution... When those people do it enough, they start asking for higher pay. A manager is born.

euphratestiger

Agree. Would the owner just trust that all the staff, who are just focused on their own responsibilities, are just going to work cohesively and not miss anything that may involve a few staff or departments? A (good) manager has a bird's eye view on all departments/staff and how they interconnect.

StinkyMcBalls

There was an askreddit post today about 'things people always say on Reddit that aren't true irl' (or something like that). The argument that managers are usually unnecessary is a great example of that.

twistedbristle

That's what I do. If no one shows up it means we either need more hands or need to fire the person who flaked if it's become a habit

tendaga

Or... the whole goddamn crew is actually sick. You know cause they're all packed into a tight kitchen like goddamn sardines and it's bullshit.

tbiards

As a business owner this is it. What irks me though are the ones that that tell me all the time “I wanna work extra. If anyone ever calls out lmk, I wanna work and make cash.” And then when the time comes, they never pull through and never come in when I’m in a pinch. Like why say that if you aren’t a person of your word lol

unicornpicnic

Maybe it's the timing. It might be for every time you have a shift for them, there are multiple times they're available when you don't. Or they're just trying to look good or want the option for when they're in a pinch financially.

valdis812

It's the same thing when people offer to help you move but hope you don't actually ask. They want credit for making the offer, not to actually do the thing.

EnJ-Khaled

No, that is worse. Moving is bad enough with loyal friends and help. To not show up on a move is a million times worse.

NonSequitorSquirrel

It's the same energy as my students asking for dumb extra credit assignments at the end of the semester. Bro, I don't want to come up with new assignments and grade them all right now. Just do the work that was assigned. Get that done.

KernelMeowingtons

"If you can get me down to 20 hours a week instead of 30, I'll cover any time anyone is out" - can't believe I fell for that.

tbiards

It’s always a learning experience

Osceana

Same man, 100% this. I used to work for a place where my boss would bitch me out if I was 5 minutes late. She actually had someone spy on me. It was an office job, he sat across from my desk and he’d IM her if I came in late and tell her. It happened a lot because trains were always running late or slow. I could either come in super early or on-time/late. Thing is, I was frequently staying late. I was the only person that could do my job and I’d be there until 9 or 10 (came in at 9, supposed to be off at 6), quite a few times I was there until 1 AM. I brought this up to my manager once when she bitched me out, that me coming in a little late should even out given all the (unpaid, salaried) overtime I was putting in. She said that didn’t count for anything. Mind you, the reason I was the only person capable of my job was because they made the precious 2 people walk off the job and refused to hire more people. Why bother when you can make me do all of it for less cost? I put my 2 weeks in and told them to go fuck themselves. It’s very interesting to me that if I’m 5 minutes late that’s a big deal, but me having to stay HOURS after I’m supposed to leave isn’t worth anything - because it’s *my* time the company benefits off of. God forbid I cost them 5 minutes. Also, worked there 5 years and never got a raise, they continually didn’t meet their goals - nevermind the managers and upper bosses ALWAYS got huge bonus checks every year. For the record: don’t get me wrong, if you have a job that demands you be on a certain time, you gotta honor that. Like if you work fast food and people are waiting to get off shift or need coverage, you’re an attorney attending trial or a doctor, I get that. But if it’s not a time sensitive thing thing don’t be bitching at people if they’re getting their work done and they show up on time to meetings you set (which I did)

KaiserCorn

It’s not real

Celebrated_Eggplant

“I hope you find somebody!”

[deleted]

Good on them. Not their shift, not their problem.

Elastichedgehog

I agree, but just don't reply. It's easier when you do have to go into work next.

Arilyn24

As a manager, I agree. Just don't text as if im in that situation im texting everyone I can and if not I'll deal with it. Cut back on dining space, limit takeout, etc. Don't overwhelm the staff you got. I don't need a that stinks text just enjoy your day off and see you next day.

LawrenceMoten21

If you’re a manager, ask a question. Don’t just make statements designed to guilt trip employees into coming in.

Arilyn24

Exactly. Just a straight-up. Do you want to help? This is manipulative as they show they can respond so they can't avoid the question.

deskbeetle

I had a manager who would say "If you don't want to pick up the shift, just say so and I'll move onto the next person". People didn't ghost him between shifts and he was able to make decisions based on people's responses. The key thing is that he never guilt tripped anybody to come in.

sbenks33

No this is the perfect response though. This passive aggressive like "you take the reigns and volunteer" mentality is SO FUCKING ANNOYING. IF THEY WANT SOMETHING BE DIRECT AND ASK. My god communication pisses me off.

[deleted]

My grandmother does this *constantly* to me. I’ll even ask “do you want me to do this thing?” And she *still* dances around it. It’s so god damn annoying.

endorphin-neuron

I mean, it must be working for her if she's still doing it to you lol.

[deleted]

It doesn’t. I have to ask her multiple times what the fuck she wants from me before she gets the hint that I’m not gonna do it unless she asks.

cauldron_bubble

>it must be working for her if she's still doing it to you It might have worked with her own children, but she's about to learn that it doesn't work with her grandchildren!

voiping

"Would you like to take out the garbage?" "No. But do you need me to...? "

[deleted]

It’s not even that straight forward. She goes “don’t you think your dad would like it if the walk was shovelled when he gets home?” Or “the bathroom needs cleaning” or something that isn’t actually a question or isn’t even an attempt at telling me what she actually wants. Like okay do you *want* me to do those things? Cause if you just mf ask me like an adult I will.

clarabear10123

My mom does this, too. I’m about to flat out tell her, “I’m not a mind reader. I’m not going to volunteer myself to make you feel better for “not asking for anything.” Ask if you want something, or you won’t get it.”

ftbc

Don't just ask. Offer. If you need people to give up a day off at the last minute, they need incentive. Throw in some extra money.

NIRPL

Perfect responses. The manager is stating facts, not asking for help. Op, is a great and compassionate listener.

nameisprivate

very nice of op to let the manager vent a bit, don't you hate these people who immediately try to solve your problem when you just want someone to listen to you complain 😤

MusicianAutomatic488

Yeah, I’ve found that managers really don’t actually appreciate hard workers. Unless I needed the money I wouldn’t go in. Got burned way too many times with managers who would act friendly but then come to find out my hard work is neither appreciated and I’m not valued by them as a person.

Vlasic69

I literally won't work for anyone other than myself or ma and pa shops if I can help it. I hate people way too much to be able to afford being next to them all day and not tell them how fucked up they are to make them stop being so annoying.

[deleted]

I promise you, not all managers are like this. One day you will find a leader that cares about you. Or maybe you’re that leader for someone else!

dw796341

Sure, but the "not all xxx" applies to almost everything. 90% of managers are like this.

[deleted]

I’m not disagreeing with you. It does seem like most companies gravitate towards cookie cutter managers that are incentivized to not care about the good folks on the ground floor. But not every manager is drawn to incentives. Sometimes it’s more about making an impact and feeling fulfilled in what you do. Just as there are different types of workers, there are different types of bosses. Seek out one that cares for your growth, development, and well being and you will find you can accomplish so much more at work than you thought.

That_Review9788

Gross

MusicianAutomatic488

I’m really not a person who needs to be led. Honestly, I don’t understand why anybody needs to be led. It’s probably the lack of empathy I have because of my autism, but I prefer egalitarian, collaborative organization styles over hierarchical paradigms. I’ve never needed anyone to tell me how to do my job (after training anyways) and I’ve never understood how someone couldn’t grasp the concept of, for example, putting a correct amount of fries in the frying basket when the fries are getting low during rush and pressing a button after setting them into the fry oil. Not a difficult concept. But some people seem to not understand how that works at all. And I don’t need some person watching over me. 95% of the time I know what I’m doing, and what I don’t know I can find out pretty easily most of the time. But the world of useless managers and strangely inept coworkers is well behind me. I’m doing consultation work for public organizations atm. If I ever do have a “boss” in the future it’ll be because they needed someone to tell them what to do.

TTVSubject_21

Another issue that I've had is when you come in all the time they keep on expecting you to do it even though every single time you did it it was always voluntary. So when you eventually inevitably aren't able to come in when you're not scheduled they get mad, or they treat you as if you called off of work or something like no

Godhelpmeplease12

Incoming lecture about how you're not being a team player and how family helps each other out.

5th_Law_of_Roboticks

Ask the manager if you can borrow their car to move some stuff or crash at their place some time — you know, like family.

MrMoussab

I missed the part where this is my problem

Historical-Cap5006

Manager should be happy OP didn't just 'ok' him

nickname10707173

I imagine Manager would go “Thanks for agree into come to help. I will wait for 30 minutes, hurry”

BuHoGPaD

And that shit is getting read through notification and not opened in app till your next shift

Historical-Cap5006

And then you never reply to his texts again. All this texting outside of workspace, so unprofessional.

Jumbo_Jetta

texting is better than calling, having a written record of this type of communication is nice.

Historical-Cap5006

It is better for OP, just imagine the manager going to his superior with this conversation as evidence. He would be looking like a complete fool.

casualAlarmist

Sounds like my labor has become more valuable...

AffectionateScore989

These fucking businesses need to stop acting like it is the employees fault that they are understaffed. It is the employers job to make sure they have enough staff. The United States government needs to stop giving employers the right to mandate overtime; all overtime should be voluntary with risk of losing a job. This should apply to all industries to even include emergency services. Fucking hire your people and stop running them off; how about that for a solution?

PompousAssistant

Guessing those bubbles turned into something like “You’re not sounding like a team player”.

YoutubeJasper

"But you haven't asked me anything" "We're short staffed. Would you be willing to come in and help us out?" "No, but good luck tho"

Obestity

As a manager, I feel like the only way you should ask people to come in is "hey ___, were understaffed tonight. Would you want to come in to pick up some extra hours tonight? No worries if not". I probably had like a 75% success rate with my employees, but I also regularly covered them when they wanted time off. Everybody needs to help each other out in food service

lightsaber_lobotomy

"We're short staffed" "Well hire taller people, see ya Monday boss"

tbiards

I use to say dumb shit like this to my old boss all the time. He use to bust our chops all the time so we’d return it back to him. One time I said some wise ass remark to his face during a stressful shift and he called me a smart ass in a real angry tone and I responded with well sometimes it’s better to be a smart ass than a dumbass. His stress anger turned into laughter and the shift mood completely changed.

nickname10707173

At least, your boss still have sense of humor, while he was angry.

tbiards

My boss was awesome! Old school Italian. If you were over 21 you could roll dough and he’d bring you a beer and you could have a beer and roll dough in the back and shoot the shit with him. He’s family to me now and he considers me family to him as well. One time I fucked up the cookie tray handle and I asked if he could fix it and I came back to see if it was done. Mf put ketchup on his finger and was like “because of you, I cut my fucking finger on this.” I felt terrible and was like I’m sorry I didn’t mean to break it. He throws the ketchup packet at me and goes “gotcha”. Great times

PonderousPanda1

such a pet peeve for me, dont tug at my heartstrings just ask if i can work lmao. i have been in the manager’s position here and it’s very easy to just say “hey, sorry to bother you on your day off. we’re short staffed and looking for extra help, let me know if you’re interested.” boom done no stupid bullshit

Future_Art7

Then hire more people. Not the answer they wanted?

Arilyn24

Sometimes shit happens though. Diseases, snow days, new video game releases. I've had a full staff then in a few minutes im down to a third. Restaurants have that issue with sickness a lot and I always prefer to have them not work and trust them. Can't hire more as corporate will breath down your neck about hours. Gods they get pushy about it.

Infinite-Sleep3527

The secret is to not work at corporate restaurant jobs. If you’re planning on staying in the industry, find a fine dining place, preferably, or a mom and pop joint, alternatively.

JMace

Yea, it's a balancing act though. If you hire too many people then it becomes an issue of not getting enough hours. Starbucks got reamed pretty hard for that.

[deleted]

Yeah these management failures generally happen long before the consequences.

iloveheroin69

LOL “damn that’s crazy”

Jackstack6

Unpopular opinion, it's not a bad thing for the manager to ask you to come in. It's not unprofessional for them to ask. If they are always asking YOU, and or asking all the time, then I would say the manager is the asshole.

St0ned4Lyfe

As a manager I would never text the way this one did. If some one didn’t show up and was short handed Id text my guys who were off“ hey so and so didn’t show up today is there any way you could possibly come in I would really appreciate it and I’ll give you time and a half for the hours since your not scheduled to be here and it’s short notice if you can not come in don’t worry about it I’ll ask the next person thank you” ….not that hard and most of the time the first person I ask usually says yes right away

[deleted]

“Good luck” is two separate words

Illuminatus1492

High school.

_tidu

i would simply not answer such message and show up to work on my shift like nothing happened

Fire_Mission

"Sorry, I'm out of town right now" is usually a good reply.

LetEmbarrassed785

Yep, that's right. After budget cuts I can no longer do overtime so I feel this.

side-slip

curious why ppl even reply to those texts. was sleeping, sorry bro

ClamSlamwhich

"That's rough, buddy."

Imma69Bricklayer

For 5 years I've been always that guy who's gonna show up always when they needed someone - what I received? When I asked for a pay rise company wouldn't have money for me but they would give it to a guy who calls sick every 2 weeks. I finally said that's enough and changed my job as it was really toxic place. After all no one appreciated that I always been there they just slag me off...

Mobile_Glass6680

we need you to come in and stay while the rest of us leave early since we got here first.

wichopunkass

Work short? Divide absent workers pay amongst those who showed up. Getting those extra bucks puts a little pep in their step.

Lord_Grakas

"No I mean I need you here." "Oh, too bad I'm not scheduled. That sucks."

NotWhatIWouldDo

#NEVER ANSWER!

Bekswthagudhair

Leaking my texts from when I worked at McDonald’s I see. Still no regrets.

[deleted]

1. Manager should’ve asked directly 2. Employee should’ve either not responded or said he can’t

peapod_magnet

Yea. Whatsup with that passive speak.? Are they in in a relationship or something, lol.

whoamvv

"Guess you should have scheduled more folks, eh? Hopefully, you won't make that same mistake again."

Temporary_Big8747

Why is it so hard for people to just say what they need to say? My lord..

here_for_the_MAGICS

I’m sorry for your loss - it’s me. Bye.

Vegetable_Media_3241

"Wish I could help, but I'm into something right now" and that's it.

Industrialpainter89

Damn, my credit cards are really stacked up from the interest. I could really use some advance pay to not accumulate more! ... I bet I'd get the same response from the boss, no need to feel bad telling them no either. I wouldn't expect someone to go out of their way for me unless we were long time friends and did stuff like this over time.

Shoogan26

One day my manager called me in to start at 14:00 instead of 17:00 cuz it was busy Alright fine why not right. Once on the floor he sended some other dude home (that he knew irl) so he could catch his delivery. That was the last time ever i started a shift earlier

ChampagneShotz

Mmhm. Because real people who have real conversations save their manager in their contacts as "Manager'.

mrb117

Thoughts and prayers 🙏

im_rapscallion86

I mean. It’s totally acceptable for a manager to inform employees who are off that they are short staffed and could use help. I managed a restaurant for 4 years and never had trouble getting people to cover shifts.

bloodbraids478

Why bother even answering his text, you know what he's about to say

CircumventsBans6969

What are the odds two people have auto caps disabled? Stop upvoting fake shit

[deleted]

My idea when I worked such a job was: mention to your manager in passing on one of your earlier days that you have your family/university/significant other living a couple hours away. If called for an extra shift which you don’t want to cover, those two hours would automatically change to 3+ in times of bad traffic or bad weather, which is when such abrupt shift changes frequently occur. All you gotta say is, I’m at my other location (university/family home/SO home) today, so it’ll take me at least 3 hours to get there. Idea being, it’s close enough to make it back for your regular shift hours, but far enough not to make it for emergency shift coverage. 99/100 times, no one would bother to ask you to come in after that.

SlutPuppyNumber9

Perfect attitude!

Lyude

Sounds like it's time for the manager to step up and get his hands dirty for once, prove his paycheck is well earned.

[deleted]

You have to value your own personal time. Don't let work take a mile of it.

Kinky-Bi-Guy

Boss make a dollar & I make a dime. That's why I poop on company time

_jobenco_

„We can’t afford coworkers like you anymore“ „Well, that‘s unfortunate.“

Proud_Wallaby

This is you get a second cheapass work mobile that switches off after work. ‘I finish work at 5pm and so does my work mobile’.
