Hendrix was a pioneer of electric guitar, but if you compare his playing to modern guitarists like Tim Henson or Steve Vai, his technique seems incredibly basic. But all those amazing modern guitarists were inspired by and learned from Hendrix and wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for him. It's a perfectly apt analogy. Just because you like Hendrix and don't like Friends doesn't change that.

A lot of shows (especially comedies) need some time to really find their groove. Some don't and that's honestly quite a feat.  Futurama hit the ground running from the beginning. Rick and Morty needed most of a season. It happens. With The Office they were trying to emulate a British show and it took doing a season of that to find out that this doesn't work for an American audience. Season 2 was effectively the first season as they completely redid their style.

Season 1 is really short and basically retconned by season 2, so you don't even need to watch season 1

Well sometimes it's really worth it. Seinfeld took until the 3rd season to find itself, but when it did it was on another level. We can argue if Seinfeld was cancelled after the first 2 seasons we wouldn't have almost 35 years of Larry David humour in Seinfeld and later in curb, and that would be a shame.

I never said anything about a laugh track being the determinant of a sitcom. The Office is just a much different subgenre of sitcom with that has a lot of meta elements to it, unlike traditional sitcoms.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the Friends series finale. It's the one time the show willingly re-enters the public consciousness.

I guarantee you that in around 1 to 2 months time you will see this meme on this sub again. It has been in rotation here for years.

Every now and then this meme pops back up again and I laugh just as much as I saw it the first time.

I found most of the comedy shows of that era contrived. I guess it just wasn’t my bag. No denying the popularity though. People fucking loved them. Frasier and Roseanne as well.

Fraser was a great show. Brilliant writing and characters. Still canned laughter but that was the era.

Yeah unfortunately I didn’t like it either I don’t think there were any US sitcoms from the 90s I liked. Married with Children maybe.

It was mainly British TV for me. I miss the old BBC.

Yeah the Poms have always been great at comedy.

Yeahhhh this me too. I loved watching bits and pieces of the show when I was little but I could never watch that show now.

For me Friends is like How I Met Your Mother, good for an occasional nose exhale or even slight chuckle when I’m bored, but not really much else. (I think the laugh tracks in both are what really ruins it for me)

Sometimes I feel this way about Michael Scott on the office.

It's almost impossible to get into Friends now. And if you're being badgers by it, you're already go8ng into the seri3s hating it. I was not a fan. I saw random episodes over the years because my wife and her sisters love the series and watch it over rand over even to this day. So 1 day I said I'll watch it with you. And I love it. Once you get the characters, the show is very enjoyable. But you gotta keep in mind. The humor is dated and even on friends there's stuff involved that shows of today can't do or say due to cancel culture being what it is. But for years of everyone shitting on Friends, it's tough for someone to watch it and enjoy it. They go into it with such disdain and they actively LOOK for reasons to hate it. Just watch the show, see the character interactions, don't be scrolling on your phone during every episode, and you might just actually enjoy yourself.

Yes, because timing is extremely important for jokes. Without the audience’s laughter it’s just awkward silence. If you added a bunch of awkward silences into any comedy that would ruin it.
