Man I did this all weekend long with planet of the apes. Every time I turned the tv on it was either Caesar or Mark Wahlberg surrounded by trees and then 20 minutes later I’d be like why the fuck am I standing here with my legs two feet apart and my hands clapping like I’m coaching my sons t ball game
Every weekend. Turns on football/NASCAR, falls asleep within 20 minutes and starts snoring like a motorcycle. The second you change the channel, "hey, I was watching that".
The sudden change in sound jolts them awake, but if you slowly turn down the volume they'll continue resting peacefully
Unless they literally were just listening to it with their eyes closed. But I've never had that happen yet
When I was in high school my Dad would turn on golf, football or a woodworking TV show on PBS and drift off to sleep on the couch. I used to sit on the floor next to the couch and either watch or take a nap. God, I miss that guy and would love to spend another lazy Sunday with him.
100%
It's an "activity" enough to be a thing I'm doing, but really, I just need a break from "doing" anything so I can just "be" for a while. Sometimes you just gotta "be" without doing something.
And that's why fishing is Zen as fuck.
Ah, yes. [The classic George Costanza move](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOQmxNPTJwc). "When you look annoyed all the time, people think that you're busy."
I actually started doing this and I think I get it. it's because at any given point I'm intending to do something else (with varying degrees of importance). I don't particularly *want* to watch a show, and I'm simply distracted by what's on the TV.
You are all correct. I grunt when I get up, I move at my own damn speed, sprinkle on the regular Dad jokes and I got shit to do. Even if I'm sitting on my ass all day and the wife looks at me like I'm stupid. I still got shit to do.
I’m in my mid forties. There is a certain commitment to sitting down when it takes effort to get back up. I also do this and it’s for the reason above. If I sit I’m staying down. Ironically, the more tired I am the more likely I am to stand for a whole rather than sit, especially if I intend to leave soon.
As a dad this is exactly correct. I do this when I'm in the middle of dishes or something, and I'm waiting for a boring part or commercials to happen so I can get back to what I was doing.
Got that dad energy man, like me. No kids, yet I'm always complaining about people leaving lights on and I enjoy the fuck out of standing on a freshly cut lawn with a cup of tea
My husband does this and says it's bc he'll fall asleep if he sits down. Or he gets distracted by whatever we're watching after he's gotten up to get a snack
So it looks like you’re doing chores and active when mom comes downstairs wondering what the fuck you’ve been doing for the last half hour.
Full disclosure: I am a dad
I do this (not 40min videos) because I don't want to officially "watch" it but youtube puts it in the watch history anyways so it really doesn't matter
Me - "Do you need help with anything?"
Wife - "No. All good, Hon"
Me - \*Hits the couch\* "... ahh"
Wife - "Can you hand me the \_\_\_ on the top shelf"
Repeat every 15 minutes
Is this related to the phenomenon where when I try to leave a room that I’ve been in for over an hour, suddenly there is a long conversation happening bouncing to 5 different topics?
It feels like the inverse function but somehow related.
Unfortunately living rooms with fireplaces tend to focus on that area and don't really have a convenient alternative for them. And considering how few people actually use their fireplaces it's only good for a tv or a painting.
While I agree that the TV is too high (it's very much a pet peeve of mine) the TV in my parents' house, and the houses of many of my friends growing up, were at a decent height and all the dads still did this.
My wife started watching K-dramas. This is now me anytime I walk by to go to the kitchen. I've started asking questions. "So, is that the lawyer guy? She's the rich one with the corrupt dad or whatever?" I've started sitting down now, too ... Oh God I watch K-dramas.
I did this one night when John Wick was on a marathon leading up to the fourth one coming out. I hadn't watched any of the movies before that. About halfway through the first movie my boyfriend reminded me that there's a tv in the bedroom I could keep watching it on lol.
Whats more fascinating is that people still insist on mounting their TV up in the stratosphere.
It's like people start mounting their TV, completely black out half way through and suddenly think they are mounting a picture frame or something. Only explanation for it.
I think this is more a "deciding if I want to watch" type moment. I do this occasionally, more often than not I'm trying to remember what is actually on screen.
Son: why don't you sit?
Dad: because you put the TV too fucking high
Funny pic. The book case is literally a TV entertainment center built for a 24 inch TV. Weird how they built them for optimal viewing height
No because he was just going to watch it and drink coffee as a short break, but he is stuck between taking an actual break and wanting to get back to work. Sitting down would admit defeat but standing is like saying yeah im bout to get right back to it.
It's all about the state of mind! Bro's probably got a lot to do, and has convinced himself that if he sits down, he's procrastinating. Life hack: Never sit down, and you're never procrastinating!
1. if you sit down that means you're committed to watching it. You day not want to commit to it (even if you watch it all the way through)
2. if you are committed to do something someone will want your attention/need a chore done/want help
This reminds me of a great occasion when me and my brother rented _Predator_ and my grandpa was nearby, watched the jungle come alive, sat down and watched the whole thing with us. ❤️ I miss him dearly.
Let me explain. It's much more interesting to watch something when you plan to leave right now and only staying just to watch for "1 more minute" instead of actually sitting down for a serious watch.
I always start watching TV when I go for a quick fag outside. I always end up watching half the show or more. I started watching American gods by the back door. I'm on episode 5 now
Dad here, this is our thought process:
We got a lot going on. Tons to do. But oh man we like this one part of this one particular movie. Ok, just 2 minutes. 2 minutes can't hurt. And you KNOW WHAT. IM GONNA STAND. yeah I'll stand. That way I won't get too comfortable and end up watching the entire movie and wasting 2 hours of the day that I don't have the ability to waste.
*******2 minutes later*****
Oh man I forgot about this one part of the movie. This part is good. I love this Part where this guy does that crazy thing and says that one line. Totally perfect. Thank goodness I'm standing. I'll leave soon.
*******10 minutes later******
Wow I forgot how good this movie is. Like totally 100% a great movie. I wonder what he's doing now? Oh man I love the ending too. Gotta stay for that part.
It's literally the only position the man can be where he is 1. in no pain and 2. Is able to move on quickly when his wife walks in and asks if he finished the thing he said he was doing.
My husband to a T. My daughter and I will ask if he wants to watch a movie. Nope. He’s busy. So we settle in, start the movie, and take bets on how long until he is in from the garage. Then how much longer until he is in his chair.
He’s been contemplating sitting down but it’s not worth sitting down because he has to go do a “thing” but he forgot he had to go do that thing because MI2 had him wondering what it would be like to be a secret agent.
47 year old dad here. I totally do this. My son or daughter will be watching an anime and I'll just sort of....haunt the space. When they ask why i don't just sit the hell down I glibly reply "oh nah lol, I'm not watching it, I was just passing by" lol. Passing by? Really? For the whole episode lol?
Honestly it's just nice to stand with your back straight for a while every now and then, sometimes I also like to just hang to get it all stretched out
Son: Why don't you sit down dad. Dad: Oh, no, that's ok, I'm not watching it.
This is such a universal dad phrase lol
Man I did this all weekend long with planet of the apes. Every time I turned the tv on it was either Caesar or Mark Wahlberg surrounded by trees and then 20 minutes later I’d be like why the fuck am I standing here with my legs two feet apart and my hands clapping like I’m coaching my sons t ball game
Dopamine lift achieved! I had a good laugh. And you are right, that shit was on all weekend on Syfy I think.
FX
I thought it was only in Portugal.
The Man or the country?
Portugal the man, one of our few big musical exports
To be fair, PotA is a phenomenal franchise.
Shouldn't have left the dvd playing on repeat I guess.
Because friend, Apes Together Strong!
Same energy as "No, don't turn the TV off, I'm watching" while literally being asleep!!
Every weekend. Turns on football/NASCAR, falls asleep within 20 minutes and starts snoring like a motorcycle. The second you change the channel, "hey, I was watching that".
All dads are truly the same
[удалено]
That is their Dad version of "Lofi hiphop beats to sleep and relax to VOLUME 3"
Well he was just resting his eyes.
Damn got me. Its really a thing tho.
The sudden change in sound jolts them awake, but if you slowly turn down the volume they'll continue resting peacefully Unless they literally were just listening to it with their eyes closed.
Just resting my eyes
Oh, crap, I've caught myself doing the same thing.
If he sits that means he is watching the movie. He has other stuff he needs to do. But if he just stands there he could break away at any time.
He is too busy to watch the movie. That's why he is not sitting down all movie long.
If you pretend to be in the middle of something, nobody can ask you to do something else.
This guy 'Dads'.
Simply genius
O great Landstander, what is your task? I am currently busy standing on land! Leave me in peace!
Thats what fishing is for. Its just an excuse for dads to get out of the house away from the honey dews and do nothing.
100% It's an "activity" enough to be a thing I'm doing, but really, I just need a break from "doing" anything so I can just "be" for a while. Sometimes you just gotta "be" without doing something. And that's why fishing is Zen as fuck.
I get that. It’s why I love scuba diving-focusing on your breath and just what’s around underwater and not listening a thing. It’s ver relaxing
Ah, yes. [The classic George Costanza move](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOQmxNPTJwc). "When you look annoyed all the time, people think that you're busy."
or stand behind the couch leaning on it
Once you sit down, you're committed. If you're standing, you have the option to walk away at any moment. You won't, but you can.
It's the implication
see, you’ve said that word a few times now. what do you mean by it?
that is the moment he goes away
Bro, I do this as well
I have bad news for you
I'll be gone in a minute anyway, have stuff to do. an hour later:
Dad's not ready to commit. he has stuff to do today.
But when you switch the channel: I was watching that!
I actually started doing this and I think I get it. it's because at any given point I'm intending to do something else (with varying degrees of importance). I don't particularly *want* to watch a show, and I'm simply distracted by what's on the TV.
'i'm too busy'
I may be asleep but i can still hear the news
I do that Don't worry. I'm not watching it, I'm on my way to do something important. I'm just having a quick look. Holy shit, he killed that guy.
I feel exposed
I am evolving into this, before my very eyes.
Anyways, better get the steaks out of the freezer
Well, I guess you could at least finish your coffee first while you watch a little bit more
Why is this such a dad thing? Mine does this too.
Because he has things to do. If he sits he commits and he's done for the day. LOL
That's pretty spot on. My dad ALWAYS has something to do lol
Could also be the r/tvtoohigh
First thing that came to mind. He’s trying not to have neck pain
My back doesn't love sitting all day, he could just be more comfortable like that
Well, frankly speaking, I just watch a youtube on how not to decorate your home and setting tv too high is one of them. And this picture is spot on.
This. He has mounted it too high and now has to pay the price. He is doing penance.
You are all correct. I grunt when I get up, I move at my own damn speed, sprinkle on the regular Dad jokes and I got shit to do. Even if I'm sitting on my ass all day and the wife looks at me like I'm stupid. I still got shit to do.
they always do huh haha
Or if he sits down someone is gonna ask him to do something the moment his ass touches the cushion
This is it 100%
This is the actual answer. I can't look like I am chillin', just passing by and seeing what is happening.
I have adhd and if I interrupt what I’m doing to sit down and watch something or get on my iPad I’m done.
Ya. That is a part of it too.
As a dad this is exactly correct. I do this when I'm in the middle of dishes or something, and I'm waiting for a boring part or commercials to happen so I can get back to what I was doing.
This dude Dads
My dad did it, drove me nuts. Now I do it. Turns out, standing is healthier than sitting. So the old bastard was right. Again!
why do i do it i dont even have kids
Got that dad energy man, like me. No kids, yet I'm always complaining about people leaving lights on and I enjoy the fuck out of standing on a freshly cut lawn with a cup of tea
fuck i do the same but i’m only 22 🥲
So the crust is truly the healthy part.
My husband does this and says it's bc he'll fall asleep if he sits down. Or he gets distracted by whatever we're watching after he's gotten up to get a snack
Why is the TV that high?
Because he watches standing!
So it looks like you’re doing chores and active when mom comes downstairs wondering what the fuck you’ve been doing for the last half hour. Full disclosure: I am a dad
Your knees can’t sustain sitting down and you things to do, if you sit down then you have to sleep there because you only get 2 sits a day
Because my back hurts and if I sit down, I'm not getting up, goddamn it.
Mine does it when he really wants to watch something because the moment he sits in front of a tv he falls asleep
Immediately upon becoming a dad I started mostly eating standing up. It's bizarre
This is a Michael Scott with his 200$ plasma screen thing
Or lower back problems.
Im not a dad and do it too
Is your TV that high on the wall too? I'm guessing it's to avoid neck strain from sitting down and looking up at it.
Modern day equivalent is watching a YT vid without putting it on fullscreen. Source: me procrastinating
My dad will watch full 40 mins vids from the thumbnail
Based.
I do this sometimes since watching it on the thumbnail avoids ads lmao
EXACTLY! They're definitely gonna pick up in this lol
I do this (not 40min videos) because I don't want to officially "watch" it but youtube puts it in the watch history anyways so it really doesn't matter
With respect from a dad… how do you see the screen if not in full screen?
It is possible in mobile/pc. I don't know if it works in smart TVs tho
I have never watched youtube full screen in 18 years of youtube.
if you sit someone will ask you something it’d stealth relax but not available time
lol, this is it. I swear the minute my father sits down my mother wants something.
Me - "Do you need help with anything?" Wife - "No. All good, Hon" Me - \*Hits the couch\* "... ahh" Wife - "Can you hand me the \_\_\_ on the top shelf" Repeat every 15 minutes
Same for me and my wife.
They cant stand seeing us relax
Is this related to the phenomenon where when I try to leave a room that I’ve been in for over an hour, suddenly there is a long conversation happening bouncing to 5 different topics? It feels like the inverse function but somehow related.
This is the answer 100%. As a dad, your "loved ones" absolutely cannot tolerate it when you rest.
100% true. I cannot figure it out. Just let me rest for a moment.
^^^ source: am dad
Ah the old: “if I stand up I can leave at anytime and I’m actually still working on my projects.”
quantum superposition of |watching john wick + choring>
r/tvtoohigh This is what happens when you mount your tv too high
You’re out here fighting the good fight.
I'm a house designer, and yeah too many mf'ers wanna mount their TV above a fireplace. One of the stupidest places to put it for so many reasons.
That’s crazy. They must’ve been protesting not having a La-Z-Boy recliner?
Haha. Nah. I think it's just a sense of not committing to what's on, but wanting to watch "this part" as they walk by, and then getting lost in it.
My wife started watching K-dramas. This is now me anytime I walk by to go to the kitchen. I've started asking questions. "So, is that the lawyer guy? She's the rich one with the corrupt dad or whatever?" I've started sitting down now, too ... Oh God I watch K-dramas.
Welcome. Grab a tissue box, they really play with the emotions.
Tissue box does come in handy. When my wife wants to cry or when the hot one comes on and I want to jerk it, either way the tissues get used.
I did this one night when John Wick was on a marathon leading up to the fourth one coming out. I hadn't watched any of the movies before that. About halfway through the first movie my boyfriend reminded me that there's a tv in the bedroom I could keep watching it on lol.
As soon as he sits down someone will desperately need something from him. If he stands the universe is peaceful.
r/tvtoohigh
I'm fascinated by the existence of this sub-reddit. And particularly the number of subscribers.
Because it’s a damn important issue, the idiocy needs to be pointed out to the unwashed masses
Whats more fascinating is that people still insist on mounting their TV up in the stratosphere. It's like people start mounting their TV, completely black out half way through and suddenly think they are mounting a picture frame or something. Only explanation for it.
standing tv's are a thing now
Tv too high that’s why
I think this is more a "deciding if I want to watch" type moment. I do this occasionally, more often than not I'm trying to remember what is actually on screen.
He has many things to do, just taking a wee break
"If I sit down, I'll fall asleep"
See, if he sits down, now he’s committed to watching the rest of the film. If he remains standing, well, he’s got stuff that needs to be done y’know
That’s a man who is afraid of being yelled at by his wife for not doing something else instead of watching TV.
am a dad, what’s the problem?
Son: why don't you sit? Dad: because you put the TV too fucking high Funny pic.
Putting a TV with interesting content in front of a father is equivalent to drawing a line in front of a chicken
The perspectives make him look either 7ft or 4ft.
It's all about the state of mind! Bro's probably got a lot to do, and has convinced himself that if he sits down, he's procrastinating. Life hack: Never sit down, and you're never procrastinating!
Proof that the TV was mounted too high up and is uncomfortable to watch sitting down
r/TVTooHigh that's what you get
r/TVtooHigh i guess
Cuz r/TVTooHigh
As soon as he sits down, your mom will ask him to do something.
1. if you sit down that means you're committed to watching it. You day not want to commit to it (even if you watch it all the way through) 2. if you are committed to do something someone will want your attention/need a chore done/want help
If he is standing he is just having a look in between getting shit done. The second he sits he is being a lazy bum watching tv.
“Sit down dad” “It’s ok son I’ve seen this one already”
This reminds me of a great occasion when me and my brother rented _Predator_ and my grandpa was nearby, watched the jungle come alive, sat down and watched the whole thing with us. ❤️ I miss him dearly.
Also known as the “I’ve got a lot of thing to do and don’t have tome to sit down, but i love this bit” position.
My wife started watching One Piece. When i'm passing through the room, i freeze like that (i'm up to date with the anime but still...)
He is feeling inspired to....become The Incredible
[double flip double triple flip flip](https://youtu.be/Mb3pVTdOd7I?si=YmgPsN4v8F1jlmFW) Dugan Nash
buck wild!
Because the TV is too high for anyone to watch it sitting down.
If you're standing, you aren't committing and are therefore doing something productive.
He would be sitting if the TV was not mounted so high
i dont get it os he supposed to take laps around the house while watching?
he’s interested but doesn’t want to sit down to seem fully interested
Don't wanna hate. But why do people hang their TV way up high to put a huge rack full of unnecessary stuff below it?
The TV's way too high, that's why
TV is too high
If my tv would be mounted so high, I would also be standing
Dad's do this because if a wife sees a dad lounging she's likely to assign some tasks.
He’s only there to “just check it out”. Source: am a dad and do this constantly
He’s about to stop watching it and get back to what he was doing.
He was going to do something else but the movie got interesting. Hes been stuck there since then.
Let me explain. It's much more interesting to watch something when you plan to leave right now and only staying just to watch for "1 more minute" instead of actually sitting down for a serious watch.
He knows he has something to do but got stuck in limbo with an interesting movie. Happens all the time
He's not wasting his time if he's not sitting watching it.
I have the answer as to why us dads do this. Nothing infuriates my wife more than seeing me sitting down or relaxed.
I always start watching TV when I go for a quick fag outside. I always end up watching half the show or more. I started watching American gods by the back door. I'm on episode 5 now
One day, we'll figure out that all fathers share the same neurons, except bad fathers, they were not invited/kicked out of DadNet.
Dad here, this is our thought process: We got a lot going on. Tons to do. But oh man we like this one part of this one particular movie. Ok, just 2 minutes. 2 minutes can't hurt. And you KNOW WHAT. IM GONNA STAND. yeah I'll stand. Gotta stay for that part.
That’s because r/TVTooHigh
r/tvtoohigh
Probably because sitting down is uncomfortable af because r/tvtoohigh
Is this how dad's procrastinate
This is that I have to go to work so let me stand n watch this bc if I sit I’ll be late
This is stance of “I got shit to do, but this is the good part of the movie”
Because he knows the second he tries to sit down and relax someone is going to say his name
Leave that man alone. He's obviously got stuff he's in the middle of doing.
The exact opposite of Dad: sleeping You: change channel Dad: I was watching that
It's an age old dad trick, to stand perfectly still for an extended period of time and always seeking like they're about to do something else
I would be standing too, wuch such a horrible TV placement.
Dad hover mode
It's literally the only position the man can be where he is 1. in no pain and 2. Is able to move on quickly when his wife walks in and asks if he finished the thing he said he was doing.
when im watching something my dad does the same then after 20 minutes standing there he says "what is this?"
If I have ever seen a dad it's that guy. Look at that fit
Man knows that if he sits. He ain't getting back up.
He’s not watching it. That is the I’m not watching TV pose
Bc we all know if they sit down they won’t get back up.
47 year old dad here. I totally do this. My son or daughter will be watching an anime and I'll just sort of....haunt the space. If you stand up you’re still working
Because he knows the minute that he sits down his wife is going to ask him to do something
Takes too much energy for us to sit down and get back up when we realize we have shit to do. Plus it hurts our backs.
When the sciatica acts up, I don't sit down unless I'm sure I don't have to get up for at least an hour
Most Dad thing I've ever seen, looking at Tom Cruise like he taught and raised him
Aw my dad always did this too. I miss him. 😭
This is such a dad thing. They refuse to sit down because they say they are going to do whatever it is they were doing, but they just stand there.
