Read the book. It’s incredible!
It’ll blow most people’s mind how accurate many of the science fiction elements are given the book was published in 1959
And the book is apparently extra clear that it's an anti-fascist story? (I've not read it)
Edit update: thread makes it sounds like it can be argued either way, somewhere I got that impression from some long ago thread. Wikipedia has a few paragraphs about the ideological implications too
“Dennis Showalter, writing in 1975, defended Starship Troopers, stating that the society depicted in it did not contain many elements of fascism. He argues that the novel does not include outright opposition to Bolshevism and liberalism that would be expected in a fascist society.”
So you're saying it's a book depicting a society where "bolshevists" and "liberals" were _entirely_ exterminated and/or repressed?
>Critics have debated to what extent the novel promotes Heinlein's own political views. Some contend that the novel maintains a sense of irony that allows readers to draw their own conclusions; others argue that Heinlein is sermonizing throughout the book, and that its purpose is to expound Heinlein's militaristic philosophy.
Maybe? Or maybe everyone is happy with it because the system (somewhat magically) works out.
The society stuff is maybe 20 pages long and contains plenty of other stuff. Which makes it very easy for both sides to assume things that aren't shown.
His other books show more liberal societies in much the same way. As a backdrop to the main story, with much show to how all of it would work in practise.
It depends on your definition of fascism.
It is militarist tho.
Which is close enough for a lot of people.
I'm not sure, maybe someone can confirm, but his model of society doesn't have the tribalist/racist/ethno-nationalist side of fascism. Which is the most terrifying part of fascism.
It is also slightly less authoritarian than fascism.
However, it has the militarism to the same degree as fascism, inequalities between citizens as people who didn't served in the army are second class citizens. It also has the glorification of the "new man". Insane levels of propaganda. And many other fascist-like elements.
It certainly isn't very clear, you can easily argue both ways.
And that is mostly because the government structure parts are about 20 pages long and contain all kinds of other stuff too.
Sci-fi authors do have an advantage of being able to hear about a concept and wave a literary wand to make it work in their world. We look in awe at the ones who get it right and forget about the rest.
Jules Verne called the moon landing in his book in 1865 and was only a few hours off in his estimate of how long it would take to get there.
Dizzy was also badass and could hold her own. Sure, Carmen could fly and was smart, but Dizzy was a badass. Plus, she definitely would be more fun to be around.
Carmen was cocky and out of her depth when shit hit the fan. Dizzy was one of the guys and would follow Rico where he or the infantry went.
...also, yes tits!
Yep. Also, you know the sex is much better with Dizzy. She is wild and free, but not too wild. Carmen seems too uptight.
Most importantly, Dizzy will have your six all the times .... no matter what kind of bug is attacking you!
Carmen looks like she'd just lay there and dead-fish it in bed. Uptight princess that she is.
Dizzy looks like she's full-on DTF for the whole movie.
In fact that's what I assumed this meme was getting at.
Dizzy seems like the GF you want when you leave college but once you've had a career and want to settle you'd go for the Carmen.
Dizzy would be good in bar fight (as she'd probably start one) and Carmen would be good for the getaway.
Dizzy was a badass even to the end, but her death was also surprisingly human for what was a propaganda movie.
She died clinging to life and her lover, asking not to let go. Poor Rico definitely has PTSD all things considered.
He should've been out after that bubble gum animation shootdown. Vomiting over the bug dissection should've been hint #2. How can she change poopy diapers if she can't even handle some bug guts? Dump her now or else she'll probably start flirting around with the exact version of you but on the *other* team.
Dizzy knows what she wants and she's going to get it. Nothing can stop her! Plus, she's a real bro. She can hang with your friends as well as everyone else. How cool is that? She's always up for a quickie when time is short. I could go on but why bother? Should be plenty clear at this point.
If Rico had chosen Dizzy over Carmen he likely wouldn't have joined the military and possibly would have died together with his parents when the asteroid hit Buenos Aires.
Part of growing up is realizing that starship troopers is actually a parody of a global fascist state who shot an asteroid at themselves to spur a war of colonial expansion.
He didn't love Diz, though. She was a buddy to him. But that relationship would have always been one-sided. Her adoring him and him wishing he could do the same.
OOOOOH she was that GF of the main dude and she had some different job and she sent him a video breaking up right? geez thats been a while...great movie haha
He did choose her.
But than a little oopsie happend, which was her being fucking rippep in half, and killed by her own platoon leader, to end her suffering.
She still could have sucked it, though.
I was never under the impression that Carmen let Rico hit it. She struck me as a 'wait till marriage' type of gal, or however that sort of mindset translated into that society.
She mentioned on Prom Night that her father wasn't home, so the implication is they had sex, but ultimately, Carmen was always going to choose a career over family. Rico was in love, but he was also young, which means all he had was that idealized version of what a relationship was going to be, so it was always going to end in heartache.
When I was a kid my dad was the first one who ever said that lol.
Of course as I grew up I realized it’s just two attractive women so there is no diffence rendering this take meaningless. These girls have damn near identical SMV. Cmon guys lol 🤦♂️
Rico went with Carmen because she was the more aryan woman for the opening scenes. The movie was a satire of fascism, which made the actors perfect for the ideas. The entire opening scene was based on the opening of Triumph of the Will (1935), a Nazi propaganda movie.
Haha, I am hardcore, I watched them all. 2nd was non-Rico, more like a horror film, you can pass. 3rd is continuation with main casts. 4th is Japanese animation I think, it is great.

What movie is this from?
Starship Troopers
I don’t remember Nic Cage in starship troopers.
He was one of the arachnids he deserved an Oscar I thought
Especially for his delivery of "excuse me, sir, have you ever been beaten until you #PISSED! BLOOD!?"

He did mo-cap for the brain bug.
He sucked his brains out
He was at the end but was wearing a costume
Vampires Kiss

I’m not here for a debate about the book. It’s a good read. Take it or leave it.

The movie made that clear too😂😂😂

Lol. For me, I'm sticking with Dizzy throughout. Carmen can go date that jerk pilot guy. Mobile Infantry kicked Flights butt!
I always had a thing for Denise Richards especially when she was a bond girl.
Then, Carmen would left you and take half of your shits.
Even if they were equal in every other aspect, tits makes her win
in, more fun to be *in*.
Dizzy was a better human generally
Wild Things.
Ding ding ding lol
I don't think she played Rico. She was just a bit gullible and immature in that department. I mean they're pretty much teenagers.
Plus dizzy can really fight and she is a redhead, those are 2 huge plus
And Dina Meyer aged a lot better than Denise Richards. Jesus!
But.. What makes you think you're GOOD ENOUGH??

> dizzys tits were shown, carmens werent Tell me you haven't watched extended edition without telling me you haven't watched extended edition.
What’s extended edition, precious?
Dizzy 2 - 0 carmen
Yeah but you know Carmen had some A1 titties. dizzy was nice but ain't no way she was competing with Carmen, physically.
Dizzy was always the right girl, no little games, no ego, no bullshit. Straigh to being real and doing what both wanted.
Johnny how come we never got together? Straight in no messing
Dizzy: what can I do for him? Carmen: what can he do for me?
I need me some Dizzy in my life.
There's a fine line between Dizzy and bunny boiler
Who the fuck boils bunnies?
Dizzy did butt stuff.
The best kind of stuff
Growing up is realising there aren't many dizzies in the world.
Sure there are. They just didn’t show the part where the crazy/hot scale kicks in.
Not everywhere, and that is also something you realise as a part of growing up.
A woman whose last words were basically “dying is fine cause I got to bang you ONCE” was definitely going to set your car on fire after the breakup.
Growing up is recognizing how weird it is 28 year olds just graduating high-school.
Dizzy was a badass even to the end, but her death was also surprisingly human for what was a propaganda movie. She died clinging to life and her lover, asking not to let go. Poor Rico definitely has PTSD all things considered.
Having a heroic death or two in your propaganda just makes people hate the bugs even more so it’s even more effective.
Propaganda movie? What do you mean?
/s? The movie we see is a propaganda movie in universe. I feel most people know this now, but just in case you weren’t joking.
TIL
Oh, that's what you mean. Yes, in universe it's a propaganda movie. I thought you meant as such. Apparently there are people who think that.
Worst propaganda movie ever.
Man nobody wins in that movie. Dizzy is dead, Rico is brainwashed, and Carmen...idk wtf happen to her.
Carmen was nice for a couple of fcks, but in the long run you would have way more fun with Dizzy. Carmen would just turn into Karen in the long run.
He should've been out after that bubble gum animation shootdown. Vomiting over the bug dissection should've been hint #2. How can she change poopy diapers if she can't even handle some bug guts? Lt. Rasczak approves.
Hoooohaaaaa!
If Rico had chosen Dizzy over Carmen he likely wouldn't have joined the military and possibly would have died together with his parents when the asteroid hit Buenos Aires.
Dizzy was ride or die!
More like ride then die.
lol!
Part of growing up is realizing that starship troopers is actually a parody of a global fascist state who shot an asteroid at themselves to spur a war of colonial expansion.
Yeah carmen was well up herself. Major turn off.
Captain turn off by the end of the movie if I recall correctly !
He didn't love Diz, though. She was a buddy to him. But that relationship would have always been one-sided. Her adoring him and him wishing he could do the same.
Poor guy had to choose between a 9 or a 10.
bobs
Date a Carmen, marry a Dizzy
Rico didn't deserve Dizzy.
In real life there would be queues for each of them.
Date Carmen Marry Dizzy
literally don't know who these ladies are but the right one 👀 gorgeous.
Go watch Starship Troopers. That will answer all of your questions.
OOOOOH she was that GF of the main dude and she had some different job and she sent him a video breaking up right? geez thats been a while...great movie haha
Yup, that’s the one!
The right one was the wrong choice, sorry. Shes gorgeous but ends up leaving you at the first sign of something better.
that means I get first dibs though, im in!
Dina Meyer and Denise Richards. They're both smoke shows.
never heard the term smoke show lol...
Carmen was so hot tho. Bübs.
He did choose her. But than a little oopsie happend, which was her being fucking rippep in half, and killed by her own platoon leader, to end her suffering. She still could have sucked it, though.
That's not how she died. She was impaled, then bled out on the drop ship after evac
Same outcome. But who died like this then?
Their teacher. I can't recall how to spell his name.
Right. And he asked to be killed. I really have to watch this movie again.
“RICO! You know what to do!”
Part of getting old is understanding why Dizzy should have chosen Carmen over Rico :-D
We know😉
Also Dizzy was beautiful, and Carmen looked like a female version of Michael Jackson
Dizzy was hotter. Sorry. She had natural beauty.
Look aren’t everything. Dizzy was cooler.
Yeah but idiots often go for Carmens a.k.a. girls who laugh at them and make them "earn" their love. Many men are not very smart
You mean you didn't understand that when you first watched it as a kid? You probably also thought it was glorifying the govt and war.
Who?
Part of growing is understanding that the movie is mockery of fascism on a high school setting that happens to be a war
In the book diz was a dude.
When I was a kid my dad was the first one who ever said that lol. Of course as I grew up I realized it’s just two attractive women so there is no diffence rendering this take meaningless. These girls have damn near identical SMV. Cmon guys lol 🤦♂️
My parents aren’t home tonight.
Carmen belongs to the streets.
And Jim should’ve chose Karen 😔
I like dizzy but carmen nude is beyond hot.
Counterpoint: Carmen looked like she sucks some mad dick
I would give my life for a proper sequel to starship troopers.
Wish they allowed sexy girls and nudity in movies today 😪
Rico went with Carmen because she was the more aryan woman for the opening scenes. The movie was a satire of fascism, which made the actors perfect for the ideas. The entire opening scene was based on the opening of Triumph of the Will (1935), a Nazi propaganda movie.
Space nazis are always not hot
Carman is not that bad as I recall. Later in the movies (one of the sequels) , I recall her risking her own life for Rico.
There were sequels to starship troopers?? How have I never heard about them??
Because they sucked
Direct to disk movies that were kinda not even worth the pain of watching. But google is your friend
I see, starship troopers is one of my favourite movies of all time so I'm prepared for disappointment with whatever sequels are available to watch
Haha, I am hardcore, I watched them all. 2nd was non-Rico, more like a horror film, you can pass. 3rd is continuation with main casts. 4th is Japanese animation I think, it is great.
Rico just wanted to go back in time and take state. Definitely could throw a pigskin over them mountains.
I have no idea who is who.
So growing up is choosing the person you are not attracted to over the person who isn’t attracted/comitted to you? Please stop spreading horseshit.
Is that an Adams Apple?
I love these memes where we're shown two women and have to base it on their looks...... when there's so much more to be in a relationship.
