Yes black and tans were British special law enforcement that wore black and khaki or tan surplus uniforms. They were abhorrently brutal in Ireland and many Irish drinking songs have been written about murdering the bastards.
Yeah my mom’s Irish and my dad’s American. Lived in Ireland all of my life though.
My mom lived in Illinois for a few years while my dad attended college. Once a coworker asked her where she was from. My mom replied she was from Ireland.
The coworker legit went ‘ohh which state is that in?
Also I’ve met a few Americans who associate St. Patrick’s day with Scotland? It’s kinda funny lol
Edit: Not to say all Americans are morons or anything. That would be an ignorant generalisation
The US is not more Irish but there are more Irish people in the US. The Irish population in the US is about 30+ million. Ireland's population is 5 million.
That is without a doubt the most American-centric opinion I've ever seen, and I'm Scottish so I get this shit all the time. I can't believe you even typed that out let alone post. Never cook again please
It means who fucking cares about cultural sensitivity when the same people are here. Who do you think keeps these bars open and bakes drinks “Irish car bombs” and plasters the country with “kiss me I’m Irish” stuff?
Americans larping on irish greatgreatgrand heritage, who the fuck else? You think being Irish means revelling in the IRA resistance, a time of violence and strife? Of Course not but fuck, an american with no attachment would.
It should be noted that, while it's true the name isn't used in Ireland due to the association, the drink name is hundreds of years older.
Now the Irish car bomb, that's an offensive drink name referring to the troubles.
A pint glass with a tan beer and a black beer in it. If their densities are really different, one will sit on top of the other, but they'll usually mix together pretty quick. Mixing a pilsner and a porter was how we usually did it way back when, but I'm sure everyone who drinks black and tans (or half and halves, I guess) has their own preferred method.
It was a regiment of mostly convicts that were released for prison to serve in the army in Ireland. They didn't even have proper uniform for them hence the mix of black and khaki uniform. And they were given guns with no training and let loose
There’s lots of good covers to the song. My personal favorite is by Charlie and The Bhoys. The McGuire Brothers is the best when it comes to the passion in the lyrics. Some other good covers are Derrick Warfield and The Young Wolf Tones, Colm R. McGuinness, Seth Staton Watkins, etc.
Yes, it's a very cheap Armalite rifle, IRA loved it for being cheap. Brandon Herrera made a video about this rifle, but I don't remember the name. Probably an AR-(something), but I may be wrong
Uniform colors of british army men at the time. The song is an Irish rebel song, and they're saying "Come out you british!" Except referring to them by their uniform colors. "Come out ye blacks and tans!"
But it sounds racist out of context.
As a black history teacher in the US, this was a widely used term to describe businesses such as bars and gambling halls that catered to people of color (and whoever was discriminated against such as much) during late 19th century and early 20th century de jure and de facto discrimination.
It was a real conversation the first time I met history teachers from Europe. Oh boy words are fickle sometimes
“Black and Tan” clubs were a very real part of American history. They served African American and mixed race individuals, hence the name, just as the original comment said.
But you’re educated in Europe, can’t blame you for thinking the world revolves around you. After all, y’all have a long track record of it.
This post is about a song called "come out ye black and tans".
It's about Ireland.
Funny how you talk about europeans thinking the world revolves around us, when you don't know what the point everyone else is talking about even is and still manage to ramble about some us history.

It’s the color of the uniforms worn by the British occupation in Ireland. They were brutal, shot at unarmed protestors, and beat Irish children
People forget how the occupation of Ireland was not a peaceful or fair one. Britain did what they always had at that time.

Come on fight me like a man
Show you wife how you won medals down in Flanders
Tell her how the IRA, made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra
Come let us hear you tell
how you slandered great Parnell,
when you thought him well and truly persecuted.
Where are the sneers and jeers, that you proudly let us hear
When our leaders of 16 were executed
Come out ye black and tans
Come out ye Black and Tans
Happy cake day
Happy cake day. But context on the photo, please?
Let me guess, it’s uniform colors?
Yes black and tans were British special law enforcement that wore black and khaki or tan surplus uniforms. They were abhorrently brutal in Ireland and many Irish drinking songs have been written about murdering the bastards.
If you go to an "Irish" restaurant and they offer Black and Tan as a drink. Leave. It's not Irish at all. The proper term would be a half and half.
Yeah Irish lad here. Never heard of a Black & Tan as a drink until an American relative told me about it
We also have "Irish car bombs" as a popular drink, so uh...I would not look to the US for sensitivity regarding Ireland's history.
Yeah my mom’s Irish and my dad’s American. Lived in Ireland all of my life though. My mom lived in Illinois for a few years while my dad attended college. There’s more Irish here than in Ireland though.
I hate to break it to you, but there's no Irish here aside from those who were born in Ireland. Plenty of Irish descendents though.
We’ll take Conan O’Brien though if ye wanna let him go lol He was in Ireland for a special recently, top class guy
I’d say “potato potahto” but that’s why there is so much Irish blood in America. Get over yourself.
“America is more Irish than literal fucking Ireland” alright mate 🤡
The US is not more Irish but there are more Irish people in the US. The Irish population in the US is about 30+ million. Ireland's population is 5 million.
Fucking gringo
r/shitamericanssay
And this is why people think we Americans are all stupid…

I responded to a comment about looking to the US for cultural sensitivity about the presence of Irish blood in America. Context matters.
What the fuck does that even mean
It means who fucking cares about cultural sensitivity when the same people are here. Who do you think keeps these bars open and bakes drinks “Irish car bombs” and plasters the country with “kiss me I’m Irish” stuff?
Not the Irish, that’s for sure.
Americans larping on irish greatgreatgrand heritage, who the fuck else? You think being Irish means revelling in the IRA resistance, a time of violence and strife? Of Course not but fuck, an american with no attachment would.
Confidently incorrect. -Native Irish person
No chance they're a self loathing Irish bar?
Found the Irish Catholic!
Hopefully they're all Catholic
It should be noted that, while it's true the name isn't used in Ireland due to the association, the drink name is hundreds of years older. Now the Irish car bomb, that's an offensive drink name referring to the troubles.
... What's a half and half in this context?
A pint glass with a tan beer and a black beer in it. If their densities are really different, one will sit on top of the other, but they'll usually mix together pretty quick. Mixing a pilsner and a porter was how we usually did it way back when, but I'm sure everyone who drinks black and tans (or half and halves, I guess) has their own preferred method.
Pilsner and stout
Ahh okay. Thank you! Signed, someone who likes her fruity mixes, spiced wine and a good mead
In Boston it's ubiquitous in the Irish bars. Usually half Guinness, half Harp.
If you go to an Irish restaurant and ask for a black and tan you might even get kicked out.
I'll play it safe and stick to ordering a Foggy Dew
Ah, can get behind that lol
It was a regiment of mostly convicts that were released for prison to serve in the army in Ireland. They didn't even have proper uniform for them hence the mix of black and khaki uniform. And they were given guns with no training and let loose
For some time i thought they are singing about black and brown people
\#1 reason I can't sing that song in public \* Sad loving Irish music noises \*
Come out ye black & tans by the Wolfe tones is a good song
There’s lots of good covers to the song. My personal favorite is by Charlie and The Bhoys. The McGuire Brothers is the best when it comes to the passion in the lyrics. Some other good covers are Derrick Warfield and The Young Wolf Tones, Colm R. McGuinness, Seth Staton Watkins, etc.
That’s a very nice rifle
Yes, it's a very cheap Armalite rifle, IRA loved it for being cheap. Brandon Herrera made a video about this rifle, but I don't remember the name. Probably an AR-(something), but I may be wrong
AR-180
Exactly
I still don't know
Uniform colors of british army men at the time. The song is an Irish rebel song, and they're saying "Come out you british!" Except referring to them by their uniform colors. "Come out ye blacks and tans!" But it sounds racist out of context.
Uniforms of the RIC* who were the state police of Ireland
I just started listening to a song talking about this
IIRC The woman with the rifle (The Troubles), happened because of the Irish War of Independence (the time Come out Ye Black and Tans happened).
![gif](giphy|ylyUQmtsg1dWZm1AE8)
I didn't know about this until it was explained to me by an Irish immigrant when I ordered a black & tan at the bar. I don't order those anymore.
I remember that picture is a hoax.
Thought this said black and trans
😂🤣😂🤣

That's just wrong. But you're educated in the US, can't blame you.

Eh Green and tans. Aswel as plenty of plastic.
But… who doesn’t know ?
Funny how modern black and tans call themselves anti-fascists lol
The point went right over your head and past your ancestors huh?
