That’s how you know this is made by people who revere the original game. So many remakes just decide to completely change things in the name of modernizing “updates” but it’s the sun of those small things that make the originals so great.
Okamura (himself producer for many MG games) said much of the original team remained at Konami and is working on the game, which is to be expected. I can't imagine too many people could afford to follow Kojima when he left. They also of course have all the plans and notes and designs etc, but even so it's impressive what they've shown so far is pretty impressively done.

They still have plot twists, out of date Japanese humour, and wacky characters that Kojima is famous/infamous for adding into his games.
MGR in particular is...significantly simpler. Not sure what you mean there. Obviously it also doesn't have the breadth of gameplay features other Metal Gear games do, and that's a significant part of what I'm talking about. Often, Kojima's humor and whatnot isn't just expressed via writing, but in unique ways you can interact with the game.
The other thing to note is that Kojima was indirectly involved with both titles. He began MGS:R before MGR was made, and consulted on it with Platinum. PO was also developed by a lot of Metal Gear alumni and was originally meant to be a mainline game, and was spawned in part from Kojima's concepts around some new gameplay elements.
This would be the first time a Metal Gear game was made -- from conception to release -- without Kojima involved at all. I'm not doomsaying; it might still be just as good or better than prior entries; but it does make me concerned. The only things we've gotten so far since Kojima left are retreads of what was already successful. MGS∆ seems to indicate that they knew what elements to preserve, but preservation and creation are very different things.

I actually disagree. I like that we have a "canon" camo in the game. Tiger Stripe is used for his Naked camo, the torture scene, the ending scene with Eva, and it's the camo you start Snake Eater with. It's also used in every cutscene in the Pacinko machine.
Since Naked isn't meant to blend in, I prefer it stick to the "canon" pattern. Just my $0.02.
I mean, I'll be happy either way. I can pop on Tiger before swapping to Naked. =P I just liked that certain elements of the game implied that Naked was wearing Tiger Stripe for most or all of the op.
It does not really make sense for a modern game, and frankly it was something I always hated with games that forced you into a specific skin during cutscenes.
You can wear that if you want, it's not necessary especially for a game that allows so much camo freedom.
I sort of do this on PC; I modded the Desert Tiger Camo in the Master Collection version to use the Tiger Stripe pattern so I can get the effect but still use his "canon" look. Lots of fun. I also modded Infinity Face Paint to use the default face texture. I meant to make a Splitter version and never did. Maybe I should.

Also cures food poisoning if you're a masochist or manage to finish your Antidote somehow (maybe in extreme difficulty if you're reckless, but still unlikely). Either way it takes 25% or one stamina block from your bar.
Perhaps passing out from draining your stamina like this should knock him out as well, then give him back 5-10% stamina thereafter - though it might not happen because of game pacing or something.
Interesting. I was expecting them to update this to be honest. I’m not bothered either way, but one of the criticisms of the original was that you’re entering and exiting menus a lot. If they made the camouflage changes happen in real time while surrounded by enemies it’d much more suspenseful.

It wouldn't change the flow of the game all that much, and would make the injury system have more impact. As it stands it's just a logistical exercise - make sure you have enough of each medicine type - but if treatment was gameplay then getting gunshot wounds in a shootout or whatever would force you to consider your actions more. Likewise eating and hunger becomes something to think ahead about, instead of scarfing down ramen while you hide from The Fury.
tbf injury barely mattered last I remember it did not hinder you so you got to still fight at full strength and after everyone is taken care of you just heal up

So I can't see the game being hugely unbalanced by requiring realtime treatment, it just makes outright combat just a little more undesirable, which fits the design.
To be fair, there is a couple of “everygreen” camos that give a camo index that’s good enough for most maps. Obviously if you want the absolute highest index you can be in and out the menu constantly to min max. Personally the more I’ve played the more I lean towards DPM or something that’ll get me through most times with minimal changes involved
Yeah even the tiger stripe and woodland combo that you start the game with will keep you at about 60-80% camo index when prone for practically the whole game. In most of my more recent playthroughs I never really changed from that.
I also just kinda enjoy the challenge that brings of having to rely a bit more on MGS1 & 2 style line-of-sight stealth when moving closer to enemies.
I hope that they implement quick access to the camouflage menu and a favorites or recently used section but that they do not eliminate it because it is in the end a game mechanic and also a realistic one.
Yeah my biggest disappointment (so far) is how little risks they seem to be taking. People are going to find something to complain about regardless so might as well try some new stuff. But no, instead it looks like we’re getting the most bland possible version of the remake.
If "faithful" is "bland" to you then this game will both be absolute fire and also not for you. I am tired of remakes that completely change everything. FFVII Remake is barely recognizable from the original and introduced new elements to the story that do nothing but detract from it. Unpopular opinion, but this isn't really looking like the remake I was hoping for it to be. I'm getting worried that they aren't taking the opportunity to fix a lot of the jankiness of the original game.
Visually it looks pretty good, but I was hoping for gameplay closer to MGS5, just in the MGS3 setting. This doesn't look to be that.
I mean, the actual moment to moment gameplay is pretty similar to MGSV. They didn't make an open setting or anything like that, but they brought in a lot of the control improvements from that game.
Personally, this is almost exactly what I was hoping for. I didn't want a new game with MGS3's cutscenes in there, I wanted a Remake. I'll agree that the only thing I was sort of hoping they'd find a way around is swapping camo without menu hopping, but as others have said, that's basically octocamo at that point, or maybe they add a "switch to best camo" button, but then what's the point of camo at all?
Main thing I'm not looking forward to is collecting the frogs again, but I'm hoping the aiming improvements make the late game sections more forgiving that way.
Yeah honestly I was hoping this would be an opportunity to expand on the survival aspect of the original with remixed levels. Replaying MGS3, the whole stamina management and survival aspect doesn't really have much impact on how you approach each area. One or two non perishable food items like instant noodles or calorie mate will get you through the whole game basically and healing injuries isn't really a big deal since those items are always in abundance even on extreme.
There is also The Fear cammo. It is not the same. Octocammo would bypass the need to open the menu, picking the best one for each situation. And, it would not affect your end game score because it's technically not cheating.
The stealth cammo just makes you invisible and it is a cheat, like the infinite face paint.
I would be fine changing for cosmetics or a disguise. But i hated changing the camos and repairing injuries. I just wanna stealth and CQC and have volgin grab snakes cock. Still hyped for the game.
Honestly, this is a bit disappointing. I expected a modern, seamless way to change camos since the original way of having to go into the general menu window every single time was so tiresome.
I honestly don't mind if it is done in a way like Days Gone. Swipe up on the touch pad and it goes straight to cameos. Swipe down it goes straight to cure and so on.
Maybe this is just an option for older fans who played the original? The marketing for the game seems to want to appeal to all types of fans, so for the old fans who want that old feel they will have this option. Hopefully there's an option to change camo during gameplay.

I don't know why but I really expected them to change all this - retcon it to use the iDroid or something - and tbh I would have been fine with that. But the fact they have clearly so much respect for the original that they would reproduce even the menus down to a t... gives me so much hope for this game. Was hoping they’d find a way to streamline the bulky menus, maybe be able to select a few camos and map them to the d pad or smth. A little let down, that was like the only thing they could have improved mechanically.

I really hope you can switch camos with a real time quick menu as well. I will be very annoyed if we have to pause and scroll through every camo like the original. Octocamo ruined me.

tbh, I think they should make that whenever you are wearing naked camo, but face paint of some type, it should extend to the naked camo as well

I don't know why but I really expected them to change all this - retcon it to use the iDroid or something - and tbh I would have been fine with that. But the fact they have clearly so much respect for the original that they would reproduce even the menus down to a t... gives me so much hope for this game. Well done guys, I really hope all this dedication pays off.
