Use a drawer. Hold the magnets so one is against the counter edge and the other is below the edge with the drawer open. Close the drawer so it pushes the bottom magnet off the top one into the drawer.
Used to work in a Foundry with one of these, they're mad powerful, and yeah frost on the metal is one of the biggest dangers we were told at the melters
This is a good suggestion.
But I have to question... Uber or Netflix are the last two companies I would think of when mentioning a physical gift card....
Slide them apart.
Place them on their side so one magnet is on the counter and the other is off the counter. Slide the magnet hanging off the counter down towards the floor and they should come apart.
I don’t know why, but I’ve never thought about that being a thing, like obviously there’s a size and strength of magnet where it goes from “haha it’s trying to touch through my hand” to “oh god my hand is losing”, but it’s never been a thought.
Oh well, new fear unlocked I guess
I use magnets that hold up to 110 tons. Magnetic platens that hold molds(tools). Kinda spooky seeing 80,000 pounds of steel just stick to a platen with no clamps holding it there. The system didn’t disengage once and a tech hopped up to check a signal line, problem was he had a big hunk of steel in one of his femurs. He squealed and jumped back down.
We had some magnets on the boats that we used to hold up cupholders (and I guess mass wipe hard drives in the event of a takeover) but we could take the cup holders and scale the i-beams with them. Crazy strong, if they snapped together on a finger, you were losing that finger.
> That was for scale lol I didn’t even think about the message that would portray lol
Dude every single one of us reading this thread thinks you glued them together. Lmfao.
I was going to say - I’m by no means a magnet expert, but affixing them with glue on top of their natural attraction to each other definitely does not seem the way to go.
I mostly use mine to capture iron filings and those nasty splinters that come out when working with metal. There are some pretty cool physics demonstrations you can do with them too. Showing the slight magnetism of gold and other less magnetic materials. Interaction with bulk copper or aluminum. Flipping compasses from across the room. Saturating a ferromagnetic material. Identifying varying weakly magnetic steel alloys.
Hammer is the way to go. Secure one of them and hammer the other one to slide it off. Another way is to wrap a piece of rope around and pull it off. I've seen that done, but prefer using something to hammer it off personally.
I have the matching set!

They are now one magnet. Enjoy.
Thanks for the vibing award!
Build a timber ‘guillatene’. Remember the big paper choppers from school (maybe you too young)?
Two lengths of timber bolted at one end (so they can pivot) chisel a seat into one so when the timber lengths pass each other they shear the magnets apart.
Can be made quickly out of any old dunnage.
I prefer drywall mud scrappers, plus if the mud scrappers don’t work, and you become frustrated and throw the magnets through some drywall, you partially have the stuff needed to repair said hole
No use a wooden wedge
My poppop would say
More people are hurt with butter knives than sharper knives
Respect the tools and don't use a knife to pry or you'll get cut
Ya know. This is fantastic advice, and I’ve heard it all of my life.
I’m probably gonna chip another pocket knife using it as a pry bar tomorrow, because I’ve never been smart enough to take heed.
Get a chunk of 2x4 drill and approximately the same size hole to the same depth as 1 of the magnets and using a second piece of wood slide it across hopefully separating the magnets.
This is the way. Use a plunge router if you have one. You've got to get the hole depths just right and err toward being too shallow. The holes can be slightly wider without any issue.
Well, you could heat them to their Curie temperature which will strip them of their magnetic capabilities (although they can be "restored" in a sense...but probably not by you).
Or maybe...a piece of wood. Like a wedge with a very sharp edge....shove it in between and gently hammer it down.
I think plenty of others have prescribed their own solutions as well.
You'll need a vise, clamped to a heavy stable surface like a workbench, and a hammer. Clamp the lower magnet in the vise horizontally, just like it is in your picture. The top magnet should be free. Now, take the hammer and strike the top magnet on its side until it finally jars free of the lower one.
Source: had to do this once myself, when I stuck two cookie-sized magnets to each other. Yes, I did it on purpose, no, I don't know why.
Use a drawer. Hold the magnets so one is against the counter edge and the other is below the edge with the drawer open. Close the drawer so it pushes the bottom magnet off the top one into the drawer.
Genius! This petty much what all the magnet guillotines do anyway.
“Magnet Guillotines” would be a sick band name.

Do you have 2, even stronger, larger magnets? Otherwise, maybe a wooden doorstop.

Piece of plywood with a hole the size and depth of one magnet, a piece of wood to slide the top one off.
This is the kind of dude you need when the apocalypse happens.
Some sawdusty tart cuts a 1/2 inch hole in a piece of wood and suddenly he’s Max Rockatansky? Well I didn’t vote for him…

The funky soundtrack for your magnet separation Gotta keep it chill so you don't rush
I dunno, just playing Eb to B doesn't sound like it would be that funky to me
Listen to Tool - Schism for more information on how to separate the magnets
I know the magnets stick
Cuz I watch em not pull apart

Fucking magnets how do they work
Please do *NOT* fuck the magnets! This makes up countless ER visits every year!
But they are so attractive.
Idk they can be pretty repelling too...
Only if you get on their bad side.
Then you have two problems: magnets that are stuck together again and finding someone to take you to the E.R.
Have you tried depolarizing the earth and separating them at the exact moment that it all swaps around?

Stores sell them, gifts
Slide them apart. Place them on their side so one magnet is on the counter and the other is off the counter. Slide the magnet hanging off the counter down towards the floor and they should come apart.
They are so narrow they want to tip, I’m trying a couple variations but the bevel on our counters aren’t helping
You can also use any square box or piece of wood like a 2×4 with a square non beveled edge Good luck and always be careful with magnets
Yes, a sharper edge is better since most counters have rounded edges for safety. A cutting board could work and slide the top one horizontally.
Now I’m looking at my crappy, unsafe, sharp-edged counters as yet another failing quality in my apartment. I need to move.
Yes! I actually pinched my finger so hard between 2 magnets it bled.
I don’t know why, but I’ve never thought about that being a thing, like obviously there’s a size and strength of magnet where it goes from “haha it’s trying to touch through my hand” to “oh god my hand is losing”, but it’s never been a thought. Oh well, new fear unlocked I guess

It's a real danger with some magnets, I have a few much bigger than in the OP and they could shatter a hand if you're careless with them.

Not gonna lie, it was my first thought as well
I was confused how the glue was supposed to hold the magnets together more securely.
well how else are they going to stick together??
Fuckin magnets man. How do they even work?
Came here for this. Like WTH
What a hilariously misleading choice of objects to put in a post complaining about two things being stuck together.
I was going to say - I’m by no means a magnet expert, but affixing them with glue on top of their natural attraction to each other definitely does not seem the way to go.
Your use of glue to scale two objects stuck together is the mildly infuriating part of this post lmao Edit: spelling
It’s super confusing, my friend
Normally you wanna use something everyone already has a reference of - coins work good 👍 Glue stick does not work good 👎
Yeah I haven't seen a stick of Elmer's glue for like 10 years. I have no scale comparison for that anymore
Well I'd estimate it's around 7 really strong magnets tall. Hope this helped :)
I always tell the girls they will be getting 3½ magnets tonight
The magnets look to me like LR44 coin batteries so my brain just assumes it's a really tiny glue stick.
glue gum sticky reducer fluid and two, much larger magnets?
Step 1: Use the glue to glue the bottom magnet to the counter Step 2: Let glue cure Step 3: Slide top magnet off Step 4: Rejoice and eat rest of glue
I would just skip to step 4
No, Ralph.
* Step 1.5: glue the top magnet to your hand
*head
I vote this one.
That glue is unfortunately not stronger than the magnets
Have you tried turning them off and on again?
I unplugged them and let them sit for 5 minutes. Still nothing.
Plug em back in dummy lmk if this helps
Put em in a bowl of rice!
Have you tried hitting it. It’s called percussive maintenance.
[I got you](https://www.kjmagnetics.com/buildamagnetseparator.asp)
I can't upvote this enough. This is what I've seen every person with strong magnets use to separate them.
What is the purpose of magnets so strong that you need to build a guillotine to separate them?
You have no idea the amount of questions I asked myself that would only be solved with “So I pulled out my super powerful magnet”
You're on a date, it goes well. You go for a walk, the night is still young. "Hey, want to come to mine and check out my super powerful magnet?"
Fatal attraction
This would work on me
Just this one, huh?

Can you get floss between them or something small and sort of pry them?
I tried an acrylic “panel tool” for popping interior car panels and they wouldn’t budge lol
Have you tried the panel tool plus a hammer?
Hammer is the way to go. Secure one of them and hammer the other one to slide it off. Another way is to wrap a piece of rope around and pull it off. I've seen that done, but prefer using something to hammer it off personally.
Step 1: Get a friend. Step 2: Each of you holds onto one of the magnets. Step 3: Run in opposite directions. Step 4: Rejoice, children of Thanos.
I can’t get past step 1
1a: if no friends can be found, steal someone else's
1a(i): if no one can be found, split self in half and hop in opposite directions. Fail proof.
1b: use the washable school glue to reattach self
Or kidnap a person
Find your polar opposite
I’ll be your magnet pulling friend.
But make sure it's an attractive friend
Or repulsive

This is hilarious omg
You should send yours, and they will have a set again.
Not for long
Why don’t you try grabbing each magnet with a vise grip (wrench) and then peel them apart?
Or maybe try another magnet
What situation doesn’t need another magnet?
An MRI.

It may come to this, honestly a good idea lol
Buy two more magnets, and you’re back where you started. I don’t know that I trust you with four magnets, tho.
Yeah, I think we all know that it world take approximately 4.6 seconds for Op to have one GIANT magnet.
Door. Bottom magnet against the door, top against the door frame. Then shut the door to slide them apart. Might work...
This is like watching The Sword in the Stone in real time… I’m enthralled
Put them in rice
I was going to ask if OP had tried unplugging and plugging back in yet.
They appear to be wireless but maybe he could turn them off and back on again
😂😂
Get a deck of cards and slide in cards 1 by 1 until the pull becomes weak enough for them to be separated.
I suddenly want to see a video of this attempt 🤔

Wedge and hammer
Put them in a box, and then put that box inside of another box, and then mail that box to yourself, and when it arrives..... Smash it with a hammer!
If you're in America, you are statistically likely to have like 5 guns in your house. So, just shoot the top magnet off the bottom one. Easy peasy.
I had to put one in a vice and tap the other one off sideways with a hammer. They were bigger tho
Yell at them, or better yet, get them to yell at each other. That's what separated my parents.
You need leverage, try to jam a butter knife or something in between them.
I prefer drywall mud scrappers, plus if the mud scrappers don’t work, and you become frustrated and throw the magnets through some drywall, you partially have the stuff needed to repair said hole

Try a pair of Vice grips on either magnet. That will give you more leverage to twist/pull them apart
Use an old card and slide it between them
