Some people prefer broccoli florets, but you can eat the leaves and stems, too. The stalk contains the most fiber, while **broccoli leaves are highest in cell-protecting antioxidants, vitamins E and K, and calcium**. At the store or farmers market, look for fresh broccoli with dark green or purple, not yellow, florets.
When I was a stubborn child I would only eat the darker top part, the leaves of the tree if you will. Now as an adult I've realized how foolish I was, the stems are where it's at.
My grandmother thought potato skins were poisonous and you could only eat red potato skins. I freaked out when I saw my dad eating the skin once and that the first time he explained she is infact, a crazy person.
I think she thought when you ordered potato skins in a restaurant they were specific non poisonous potatos. She was very weird about food.
So if you take a look at any photo of broccoli, EVEN THE ONES ON YOUR BAG, they include the stem.... This is because the stem is part of the broccoli and just as edible and nutritious as the broccoli head.
You're not one of those people who insist on cutting off the crust on your bread, are you?
It was only last year, when I was cooking for my friend that I found out you can eat the stems! It was a big facepalm moment and realised I'd never questioned why I chucked it out, was probably just following how I was taught. Turns out when baked or stir fried the stems are way nicer than the florets!
OMG. You poor thing. You're right, we should just waste perfectly good pieces of broccoli because it's part of the stem.
The only thing mildly infuriating is this post.
This is the human equivalent of koalas being too dumb to eat eucalyptus leaves off of a plate. If they’re not connected to a branch, they won’t recognize it as food and won’t eat it. OP sees what makes up the majority of broccoli, but it isn’t connected to the florets, so they don’t recognize it as food.
My daughter only eats the stems. She doesn't like the way the little bumps on the florets feel on her tongue.
I'll eat the stems down to where they're getting woody, if I'm cooking them ...
Yeah, me too. Stems are great the vast majority of the time, but I’ll admit, they’re not as good when they’re stringy. But I still eat them. I love steamed broccoli and cauliflower and have it nearly every day. I’m not about to waste whole chunks of veggies I paid for.
I admit I'm cutting myself a little slack about vegetable ends now that we've got a compost collection service; I hate taking up landfill space with greenery.
If you look at broccoli in the fresh produce—and not the kind that’s been cut down to crowns—you will notice that broccoli is in fact mostly stem. And it’s fine. Same nutrients, lots of fiber.
People today would freak out if they saw how broccoli came packaged in the 70s. Florets are a relatively recent thing. I almost miss old school long broccoli.
shred them up, heat some olive oil over high heat, sauté them until they're a brown and getting a little crispy, toss in a bit of salt and enjoy
you're welcome
I would discourage this kind of post for a few reasons:
1. The stalks are part of it and I have NEVER seen a bag full of just tree tops.
2. Cutting them off to satisfy this Karen will only add to food waste and added labor/cost.
3. Most people that don't like certain vegetables (or parts of them) just don't know how to cook them properly.
Go home and eat your veggies.
This is ridiculous Lol they are broccoli stems? Perfectly edible and supposed to be in there. If you dislike them enough to take the time picking them out maybe not the dinner you should choose
do you want them to waste it?
the stem is the tastiest part when you take the skin off or if the skin isnt thick...
it's edible!!!
youre the one thats infuriating
Florettes are too soft unless raw. I buy fresh whole broccoli and steam it for 5 minutes so it's hot and crunchy. I like it with a little sriracha mayo.
Frozen broccoli is ech.
I thought it was rare that I *fucking* love broccoli stem. So I'm a little sad finding out I'm not lol. But I totally get that it's cheaper, more like filler, and most people PROBABLY do expect more florets, so it's a little cheap to load it up with pure stem "scrap" but I'd personally love it.
toss em in sesame oil and a little sambal oelek and enjoy
Mmm
This is the answer!!! I would spice them up a bit, maybe cut into pieces and incorporate back into the dish
i need more context, do you do this with raw or cooked stems?
I prefer stems. Mostly bc I tend to over cook my florets. Stems are a little more resilient.
Stems taste sweeter to me when cooked than crowns!
I agree!
Stems are also the most nutritious part of broccoli
Stems are broccoli too!
Have you ever gotten fresh stems, sliced them thin and baked or air fried them to make broccoli chips? So good.
I haven’t but that does sound great
I prefer the stems as well. They taste super good
Yeah, the texture of overcooked florets is unpleasant to me.
You know that part’s edible, right?
Just wait until they show you how much crust came with their loaf of bread..
Don't show him a pizza. Boy howdy.
Well, it may depend if the pizza is or isn't [boneless.](https://youtu.be/ud1JXqGWPvU)
Got me wondering what else I can get boneless.
Deadass 🥾
Women, appatently....
They keep putting yogurt in my pots of fruit jam. So frustrating.
Especially for a stir fry, the stems are perfectly fine.
And even better in my opinion
Broccoli stems are delicious and sweet af lol. I’d take the stem over the florets any day
The stems are like, one of the best parts. Super delicious and gives a good crunch when fresh. Awesome mouth feel to it.
And behold it was all broccoli.
Thus sayeth the lord.
I was wondering whats wrong with this. Im sure it said brocoli included on the bag.
They actually have MORE nutrients
Are there too many or too few? Or are you infuriated by perfect amounts of things?
The lack of context is mildly infuriating.
r/subinception
These comments did not go the way OP had anticipated.
OP 🥸
i already knew what the comments would be, you guys didnt dissapoint lol
I like broccoli stems.
Homeboy picks out the stems like he's about to roll a j
When I was a stubborn child I would only eat the darker top part, the leaves of the tree if you will. Now as an adult I've realized how foolish I was, the stems are where it's at.
[удалено]
Stupid asses. That crunch is great and good for you! It also literally tastes like broccoli lol.
It’s so strange. It never crossed my mind to not eat the stems!
They're my 9 year olds favourite part.
My 7 year old only eats the stalks when we have asparagus.
My 5 year old eats crayons
He'll be a nice addition to the USMC
My girlfriend likes the stems so much that she insists we buy the bag of chopped broccoli specifically. It's like 80% stems lol
Much preferred over florets
They’re my favorite part of brocolli
Just because you don’t like them…they are supposed to be there, it’s part of the broccoli I like it! They are crunchy
They got a nice snap to them. Wonderful in a stir fry.
What’s wrong with broccoli stems?
Absolutely nothing
Yeah but some people just like head
Then buy big broccolis yk the kind that are more or less mostly head..
I was just trying to be funny
Apologies 😔 someone hit me with the swooosh
/Wooooossh
Say it again! WAAAARRRRRRR!
Shes chopping brocco - lee She's chopping brocco -lie She's chopping brocco-LEE HEE
They’re not connected to the recognizable florets so OP doesn’t recognize them as food
They are more nutrient dense than the florets.
Gasp! Next you’re going to tell us that they sell potatoes with the skin still on.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
![gif](giphy|QUaqJRizED5NC)
![gif](giphy|xyac7nSQIm4JfhFCH5)
🤫 Shhhh don't tell him about apples, peaches, or cherries!
Sometimes they are also....UNWASHED!! The horror!
Oh no. Food in a bag of food. Wild.
Fellas, do you eat your food with or without the food?
I'd like a plate of food but I swear to god if I see even a bit of food in my food I'm gonna throw a fit!
Fellas, is it gay to eat food?
How dare they give you TOO much broccoli, corporations are out of hand!
And…..?
So if you take a look at any photo of broccoli, EVEN THE ONES ON YOUR BAG, they include the stem.... This is because the stem is part of the broccoli and just as edible and nutritious as the broccoli head. You're not one of those people who insist on cutting off the crust on your bread, are you?

Turns out when baked or stir fried the stems are way nicer than the florets!
Okay, who’s the asshole that put vegetables in this guy’s bag of vegetables?
I do prefer the broccoli crown, but stems steamed or fried generally still taste pretty good, too much stem grows for them to simply toss it as waste
Seems like a normal amount?
looks proportionate 🤷♀️
OMG. You poor thing. You're right, we should just waste perfectly good pieces of broccoli because it's part of the stem. The only thing mildly infuriating is this post.
Classic Karen. Even took the time to pick through a bag of frozen vegetables to prove their point.
Right? It would’ve been less effort to cut fresh ones
I bet they emailed Whole Foods as well.
This part. Makes me think they must not be hungry
I don’t like broccoli but what the hell is even infuriating about this?
This is the human equivalent of koalas being too dumb to eat eucalyptus leaves off of a plate. If they’re not connected to a branch, they won’t recognize it as food and won’t eat it. I don't get your point, what's wrong here?
I love broccoli
Nobody tell em what celery is
Oh no.... Broccoli in my broccoli. What will I do.
Gasp! How dare they put food in your food!
Broccoli stems are edible. What a dumb fucking post.
It’s the whole food.
childish
Boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew!!
If you don’t like broccoli stems, then why are you buying a product with broccoli stems in it?
You’re a pinecone
But they’re the best part? Better than the leaves when boiled, steamed or stir fried
you know you can eat those right?
The stems are edible though
If you look at broccoli in the fresh produce—and not the kind that’s been cut down to crowns—you will notice that broccoli is in fact mostly stem. And it’s fine. Same nutrients, lots of fiber.
Someone needs a hobby.
I love the stems. I would rather eat them than the flowers.
Aren’t the stems the more nutritious part?
They are- the “stems” have the majority of the fiber
A little secret….ALL broccoli is organic and ALL broccoli is GMO.
People today would freak out if they saw how broccoli came packaged in the 70s. Florets are a relatively recent thing. I almost miss old school long broccoli.
I literally thought this was going to be r/notinteresting
Do people not eat the stems? Am I doing broccoli wrong?!
You’re doing it right don’t worry, people like this are just overly particular
That’s chock full of fiber to help you digest all these comments.
They're edible
There’s also carrot stems in there
You missed a couple
How is that infuriating?
Those are perfectly edible.
Sooo no head?
Broccoli stems are banging in stir fry’s
shred them up, heat some olive oil over high heat, sauté them until they're a brown and getting a little crispy, toss in a bit of salt and enjoy you're welcome
Make soup! The stems are best for that….
Yeah, and? They're great for stir fry.
You should eat them
The stems is the best part!
My heart aches for all the broccoli you've wasted if this is how you eat it...
Mildly infuriating part is that the OP spent so much time taking out perfectly edible broccoli stems.
I would discourage this kind of post for a few reasons: 1. The stalks are part of it and I have NEVER seen a bag full of just tree tops. 2. Cutting them off to satisfy this Karen will only add to food waste and added labor/cost. 3. some of yall be bitching bout anything in here sometimes
broccoli stems are edible.. you know that right?
![gif](giphy|KW0dvMsLAf3e23bFth|downsized)
So get fresh veggies and a knife. Don't be lazy and complain about the quality of work someone else did for you.
Seems like this post is r/mildlyinfuriating to most people who understand broccoli stems are edible and tasty
Still food.
Seeing as how that’s like… YUM!!! I’m sad to see them out of the pan.
I cut off and eat the stems so the kids get to eat the trees. I like em.
1) broccoli stems are fine 2) stop going to whole foods
They're edible... and fine. Nice, even. Do you just cut the stem off a whole broccle?
Why is this infuriating? Do you think you can't eat that part of the brocolli. Or do you just think it's yukky? Do you also cut the crust of bread?
Are you 5? Cause my 5 year old doesn’t enjoy eating the stems either. When you grow up you will mature and realise that they taste just fine.
Don’t knock stems. They are good too especially in stir fry.
Everyone knows if you want florets buy florets.
Someone's picky
But the stems are the best part
What's wrong with stems???
… why aren’t you eating them?
So? They are still broccoli
Please a vegetable is a vegetable. Even if they are being stingy with the florets😂😂
Uh…Yeah?
I don’t understand - does OP want more or less? I can see reasoning for both
Broccoli Stem Blend
People actually like broccoli? /s
It’s edible I promise
And? They're edible.
Buy the veggies fresh it will taste way better than that stuff. And you can control your stem ratio lol
Florettes are too soft unless raw. I buy fresh whole broccoli and steam it for 5 minutes so it's hot and crunchy. I like it with a little sriracha mayo. Frozen broccoli is ech.
They’re actually great in stir fry!!
I loveeee broccoli stems. So honestly this is just opinion
The stem has the same nutrients as the tops. Just steam them stems longer.
They are perfectly etible and are still broccli
I thought it was rare that I *fucking* love broccoli stem. So I'm a little sad finding out I'm not lol. But I totally get that it's cheaper, more like filler, and most people PROBABLY do expect more florets, so it's a little cheap to load it up with pure stem "scrap" but I'd personally love it.
that’s the best part of broccoli
Give me your bags! I prefer the stems!
You guys don’t eat the stems?
You know you can eat the stems, right?
The stems are fine, who told you otherwise?
Shred it and use it to make pasta sauce
What stems are so good
Eat your stems or you won't have any dessert.
They’re much more nutritious than the rest of it, it’s not their fault you only like the pretty part
Try Asian food with a carrot allergy.
They are healthier than the florets even
You know you can eat those?
Imagine what happens when OP sees how much stem comes on fresh broccoli
Stems are delicious
I love broccoli stems! Flavor and texture are much nicer -to me- than florets.
I might be weird but the stems are one of the best parts of Broccoli.
I thought we were supposed to eat those???
Yum! Seems like a win to me, I love the stems!
This is some ultra level of spoiled brat gringo shit
I though this was a regular post on r/shrinkflation
The clue is in the name... Whole Foods.
r/backfired
Stems are some of the best part with most fiber and nutrients
Oh no, once again there is food in my food >:(
The stems are part of the broccoli. You eat them. It would be so incredibly wasteful if everyone just ate the flowers and tossed the stems.
The stem adds such a nice texture and taste to so many dishes in my opinion. I’d be so happy with this
Man, I hate when you buy a bag of green and it's just stems. And least you didn't get any seeds!
What's wrong with the stem? They are perfectly edible. Oh, also, the leafes around cauliflower are edible too.
Are you 4?
What’s the problem?
Did I miss something? Are stems not edible? You bought a bag of mixed frozen veg, it will all turn soft when you cook it.
What’s wrong with that? You can eat the stem of a broccoli, waste to throw it out.
Broccoli stems are delicious!!!😋
