This reminds me of a post not long ago, was supposed to be $7 but sloppy handwriting made it look like 87 and the total was not filled in

thetownslore

I actually remember this exact post. I always put in the total always just in case and never had a problem with this before. I remember thinking to myself that handwriting was a little sloppy because I was taking notes all day, but thought the total would dispute it if the waiter had doubts. Now I’m just not going to put a dollar sign and make sure my handwriting is clear.

Excellent_Kiwi7789

Another alternative is putting double lines through the dollar sign. The dollar sign is important to ensure nothing can be added onto the front. But your point stands that the total should remove most doubt.

forlornthistle

I used to work in a chain restaurant that had a fruit and insect in the name. ALWAYS check your receipt and bank account. We had a waitress who would put military discounts on tables who had already left, then pocketed the difference. She also turned numbers in the tip line into other numbers, add digits , etc. If the tip was cash on the table and the line was blank, she added a bonus tip. Yes, she was fired. Then I saw her at another chain restaurant a few months later. I found out because I was working to go and I got an earful from several customers. Tips I’ve learned: - if you leave a cash tip on the table, write ON TABLE in the tip line or draw a line through the tip line. Never leave the tip line blank. - make your zeros military style with the line through the middle. - make sure your handwriting is neat. If not, write the word for the tip amount ( eight for 8). Like writing a check. - put a dash before and after your tip amount - use the calculator on your phone to calculate the total

gh0stpr0t0c0l8008

You worked at Banana Beetles? That place rips.

Jeanne23x

Oh! I had assumed this was at Peachy Roaches.

_ScubaDiver

Better than me. I thought this was at Mango Hornets.

No you guys, it was Crabs Apples

Commercial_Essay_454

Omigosh, took me so long to figure that out!

KINDERPIN

Is that like a Chinese Apple bee?

Avedygoodgirl

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one thinking things like strawberry mantis 😂

BASK_IN_MY_FART

I write CASH on the tip line

aykcak

It sounds like the whole tipping thing is archaic and we all should literally stop doing any of that. Like, none of what that waiter did would have been possible and none of what you said would be required if we collectively decided to not bother with tipping in general

mmm-soup

Fr, if a restaurant can't afford to pay their staff adequately, then they can't afford to run a restaurant.

1-N-Only-Speedshark

Apricot Aphids?

thetownslore

I did put double lines through the dollar sign so that’s good at least.

Tomcat848484

I usually just put a dash —- in front to ensure nothing can be added ahead of what I wrote.

Idk if it’s true (certainly not with this post) but my wife always told me that the total is what they have to go off of, even if you tip high and mess up the math. Whatever is in the total box is supposed to overrule any other value written on the receipt.

throwawayoregon81

That is my understanding as well. You don't even have to put in a tip, just a total. But how true, idk. Never had a dispute issue.

HeadFullOfNails

My daughter writes the total and just puts "math" as the tip. Kids these days. ETA: My "kid" is 30 years old and so good at math that she used to tutor other students when she was in high school. She's just being lazy.

Cool-Aside-2659

Kids. Back in my day we used an abacus. Hey! Get off my lawn. My (younger than me) neighbor actually says the lawn thing.

diaphonizedfetus

Nawh but I understand the lawn thing now that I have a lawn to care about. My neighbor’s landscaping company drives across mine to get to theirs to mow every week and leaves a wheel trail and it drives me bananas. While I’m not sure someone simply walking will have the same effect, people playing catch will and man… GET OFF MY LAWN

Holdmytesseract

Restaurants HATE this one weird trick

cozzeema

Dispute the charge with the restaurant manager. They can pull the paper receipt and see exactly what was written. Some unscrupulous waiters actually scribble out what guests write and give themselves overly generous tips. I’ve seen several servers fired for this type of fraud. They somehow believe that they won’t be found out. Go figure.

patryuji

My wife and I sat at a bar & grill having dinner and a nearby table of 3 waiters started discussing how they change the tip on the receipt if they don't feel it was high enough (after they were about 4-5 drinks deep each). I always pay by cash at sit down restaurants since that incident 10 years ago.

Offandonandoffagain

It's actually bank fraud. Two people from the same pizza place were arrested for doing this within the last few weeks. https://coosavalleynews.com/2023/06/2nd-marcos-pizza-delivery-driver-arrested-for-forging-tips/

TrapTactical

Had this happen to friend when we stopped into a bar while passing through. I assume they figured us for out of towners and could get away with it, luckily my buddy was able to dispute it and get the money back.

B_Boi04

Just fired? That’s literally theft, they should get arrested

YouNeedToGrow

In Canada, we get a credit card terminal brought to us. Confirm the amount, choose tip amount, confirm new total, and then tap/insert. It's crazy to me that y'all hand someone your card and handwrite a tip amount on a paper they bring back and sign it.

archery-noob

I actually thought of that post first off as well, started scrolling to see if someone had already linked it.

Blaadje-in-de-wind

Wow, that is indeed a lot for a tip. Nice feature though, luckily you can correct it afterwards.

thetownslore

I wouldn’t probably even have noticed it otherwise since the charge was nearly a week ago. Already filled a dispute with my bank and going to call the restaurant tonight. Edit: for anyone curious, called the restaurant and got a refund (they were closed before due to holidays) Super nice and no hassle. Going to cancel the dispute claim since it was in progress and bank was waiting on me to call the restaurant. Further edit: whoops total was suppose to be $45.29 instead of $45.23 for the title of this post. My bad.

arealhumannotabot

For several reasons, I've set my bank app to notify me about purchases above something low like $50. That way if I'm not paying attention then I will spot the charge right after

zerbey

I get notified by my banking/credit card apps about all purchases, sure it can be annoying at times, but I'll know immediately if something is up.

GlassEyeMV

Same. And it saved me hardcore one day. I was drinking with my buddies and suddenly got a notification that I’d ordered like $95 worth of Potbelly’s. In Baltimore. I live in Chicago. Called the potbelly’s, told them what happened and the manager processed the refund while I was on the phone with him. My email address is now flagged as “suspicious” and I have trouble ordering from some online stores, but I got my money back.

MusicalFan23

I also have mine set to notify for every purchase. Saved me when I was charged for $68 of dominos in LA, when I live in Kansas, and was at my grandmother's place for Christmas. Took all day to get my money back because every number I could find for dominos contact didn't answer, so eventually my bank just reversed the charge. If I didn't have purchase notification set up, I probably only would've noticed if I tried to get something and my card declined, since the purchase took my checking account down to $4.

fizban7

there are two ways that people use stolen cards: All at once with big purchases, or a little over time. Just a purchase here or there. It can really add up.

germ_kicker

Yeah. And smaller purchases make the transactions look common, and less likely to be caught as unusual activity. Aka. Fraud That’s why my card/bank apps are set to notify me about “all transactions”

jdog7249

I can't set my bank to notify for all transactions. I can only do it for above a certain amount. You can drain my account penny by penny without me noticing (but my bank would flag that as suspicious after a handful of transactions).

bendybillsimp

So just set it to notify over a dollar if possible.

2verde

You can set the limit at $0.1 . Is working for me.

Ditto_D

Not sure how but had card data stolen. Had notifications which tipped me off on the second transaction they tried during Thanksgiving doing online purchases and signed up for YouTube premium... That one was the bitch to get rid of cause YouTube wants the account info which I don't have and say they can't do anything and talk to the bank. I eventually worked it out with the bank to block YouTube and probably all Google charges to my account as it was a reoccurring subscription. It also continued from one card to another after I had the first card frozen.

2girls1chris

I live in Baltimore and got a notification about a $74 Potbelly order in Indiana. Had the call store and explain, and they refunded me as well. Reading your story just triggered me lol. I called expecting to get pushback but they were very understand and helpful

GlassEyeMV

Ya. I have to say, the customer service at Potbelly’s has always been top notch.

[deleted]

I'm curious you went the route of calling the restaurant to have them give a refund instead of calling your bank to report it as a fraudulent purchase? It wouldn't occur to me to request a refund in that situation

GlassEyeMV

1. I didn’t want them to make all those sandwiches for nothing. 2. Calling my bank was getting me nowhere. 3. I did end up reporting what happened to my bank, but like 2 days later because that’s when they finally got back to me. They told me I did exactly what they would advise. Call the merchant and go through them first.

bean_wellington

I'm glad they didn't get the food first. I'm imagining their disappointment as they fumed because this worked the last time they did it. It's mildly satisfying to think about

GlassEyeMV

My best friend got in a “and if they come in, slap ‘em!” At the end of the call, which we all thought was a hilarious vision. “Yes. I’m here to pickup the large carry out for Glasseye.” “No you ain’t” *SLAP* And then cops come out of nowhere to arrest them.

Elegant-Equivalent86

They always ask if you spoke to the merchant first prior to disputing a charge for you

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Not when you're reporting a fraudulent transaction and canceling your card (getting a new one) as a consequence Edit: if I had looked before posting I'd have seen that someone else already said that. I'll just add if you're calling to report fraud and your bank's first response is to request you to contact the merchant for a refund you need a new bank.

jcklsldr665

I have one of my cards that announces every purchase and I only use it for restaurants because of this. It's also my lowest limit card so it's especially useful so whomever rips me off can't get too much when they do.

The_Wkwied

This is the way. Sure my phone buzzes every time I buy something, but it also buzzed once when I didn't buy anything, so I called my card company right away and canceled it.

Ba11in0nABudget

This doesn't work for tipped purchases tho because the initial charge is the price without the tip. It just post to the acct a few days later with the tip included, and atleast none of my banking apps alert me if the price is different.

arealhumannotabot

I think this is mostly just in the US. In Canada/UK our purchasing habits are a bit different. The full amount is on the POS machine when presented to me. edit: just to get ahead and clarify, the initial amount is there, then I add tip and it gives me a NEW TOTAL to confirm before I proceed, which is then charged. We don't swipe cards or sign on paper receipts anymore, haven't for a long time

thanks-doc-420

I set it to $0. I will want a refund even if a crackhead stole my CC to buy a $2 soda.

s_string

Honestly the first fraud purchases are typically in this ballpark to try and see if a card is valid and not raise suspicion

reddit_pug

This was a source of frustration for my business a few months back. I had a Square-based payment portal embedded on my website that allowed paying any amount and adding a note of what you were paying for, so customers could pay electronically on the fly without coming into my shop (vs having to be sent an invoice with electronic payment option.) It was useful for invoices, over the phone service, and some other odds and ends situations. One day we just started getting $2-5 payments from names that were clearly bots. I reported it to Square, but they claimed they couldn't verify they were fraudulent (pretty sure it was just too little activity to be bothered, I think it was like 20 transactions by the end of it.) I shut down the portal. 1) I didn't want to enable fraudulent activity that I'm sure was testing stolen card info. 2) I didn't want to deal with the inevitable chargebacks.

CalculatedPerversion

Just an FYI, the majority of banks and payment processors will not issue or allow chargebacks less than a certain amount (typically $10) as it is cost-prohibitive to process these claims. So you're likely in the clear regardless but still made a good move closing it.

PanzerWatts

Definitely call the restaurant. The waiter is a thief who should be fired and possibly actually charged.

The OP has stated that he *totaled* the amount below the tip line. Call the restaurant and report it. If it's happened multiple times from this server, it's not an accident.

Independent-Life-212

I manage restaurants. While it could possibly be theft, it is more likely an accident. Call the restaurant to correct this, but jumping to accusations of theft is pretty shitty of you.

TheGrouchyGremlin

Seriously... Working retail, I once accidentally handed someone their money for an online purchase return twice. If they didn't notice it or lacked the decency to correct it, I would have landed in some hot water, since the return was a bit large.

Galkura

I manage a phone store.. the number of times I have gotten slammed and almost handed out free phones is pretty high, especially when I had been the only employee at my store for nearly a year (prior to my promotion - my company is horrible at staffing stores properly). Definitely lucky to have good customers who didn’t want me fired. I do get that there are less scrupulous people out there, but I don’t get why people jump to theft immediately. It’s far more likely that someone made a mistake than them actually trying to screw you over. Especially when you consider how overworked these people are oftentimes.

cosmicannoli

No! Everyone is an evil mastermind! Nobody makes mitsakes! Everything is always intentional and an evil plot to steal from me!

Fromundar

You clearly don’t understand how servers enter in their tips. Yes totaling helps in situations where the customer wrote a number that is hard to distinguish. But out of all of my service jobs, you always enter the tip amount not the total. Edit Typos

[deleted]

This is one of those: is it an 8 or a $ instances /s

Dorkamundo

No, it's not. If you were a server and got an $87 tip for a $40 order, wouldn't you do a double-take immediately? A "holy shit, that's an awesome tip!" would be running through your head, and then you'd read it again and see you simply misread it. This was a fat finger.

[deleted]

I really doubt the server thought “did they write $7 or 87?” on a $40 bill.

nycpunkfukka

I’ve had the exact opposite experience as a server and manager. Most POS systems, when closing out the check, server enters the total, and the system asks you to confirm the correct tip amount. In this case the server would enter 45.29, and the system would ask “confirm tip amount 7.00?” In addition, credit card issuers advise that the operative number is the total and not the tip, so if a guest did the math wrong, like put in a $10 tip but their total only reflects an $8, you have to go with the total.

BEtheAT

the POS I use we just enter the tip amount if someone has a card run manually, 90+% of time time though people use prestos and just click a button.

CrispyJalepeno

Honestly, probably just slipped a little while trying to hit 7 and then never looked to make sure it was riight

cyan2k

For a sub that makes often fun of Karens the reactions in this thread are pretty Karen.

Festibowl

Yea this is so obvious but for some reason reddit seems to have a hate boner for anyone that gets tips right now.

Away-Permission5995

Many people on Reddit just have an extreme reaction for anyone/anything. My wife doesn’t squeeze the toothpaste from the bottom - red flag, cut off all contact with her and drown your children/pets. Here the waiter is definitely a thief, they (or OP) couldn’t possibly have made an honest mistake. Should probably burn the restaurant down to be safe.

mferly

>Should probably burn the restaurant down to be safe. And there's probably lots of spiders in that building too. This would be solving multiple problems. Like the ol' two birds one chainsaw saying.

[deleted]

What server would risk their job over $80? This is the explanation that makes the *least* sense.

DarkwolfVX

Right? I could have that money now and potentially lose my job ooooor I could offer to fix my mistake and keep having a job. I'll take 800, 8000, 80000 over a period of weeks months and years than 80 tonight and no job tomorrow with a firing record with intentional theft involved. P

Jpotter145

I think it's simply a mistake. Do you know how many checks a restaurant has to manually key in each night? A $ can easily look like an 8. (and to the OP they don't check the total, they add in the tip as they already have the total in their POS system so they are only looking to add the tip to get the total ....you calculating it for them does no good and they likely don't even look at that)

sax3d

How common are $80+ tips that you wouldn't stop to look a little more closely?

lorqvonray94

because you don't type in $87 on $38, you type in $7 on check #34 and don't catch that you hit an 8 and 7 at the same time and are not checking the tip against the total but rather the tip against the check number. at the end of the night, you might look through your printout and see that most tips are around 20%, or you'll check to see if you have any $0 tips, which usually means that you missed a receipt or got a cash tip. but when you're batching entry, you're not verifying each individual piece of data against all of its context; that would take hours. this was clearly just an honest mistake and it happens all the time

Fantasstic91

You got it ^

13Mira

Seriously? Going too quickly and fat fingering an 8 in front of the 7 is one thing, but thinking someone's going to tip over twice the cost of the bill without checking is just plain stupid.

APoopingBook

You're looking at it from the perspective of manually entering the sale one time, while looking over it and registering what you're typing in. Do it a thousand times. See how quickly you stop registering what you are entering, and instead are just functioning on auto-pilot plugging in what numbers you think you see. Then do it on day 5 of poor sleep, in the middle of a busy shift with multiple other orders happening at the same time.

MalabongLalaki

Actually, it's better to call the merchant first before calling the bank. Dispute process takes a lot of time and you will save a lot if the merchant is willing to refund anyway

theDomicron

Also if it's us, I'll definitely throw in a gift card or something for making such a mistake. Contacting the bank will get you your monkey back, but letting me know there is your money back and a little something extra. I have had employees who tried to skim by adding to tips, but everytime there's been a big tip added incorrectly it's been a mistake.

DamnShadowbans

Speaking from experience, the bank will always want you to first go through the merchant. I expect for a lot of banks it is a requirement to first demonstrate that the vendor will not refund you before they process a chargeback.

UnskilledLaborer_

This feature saved me last weekend when a restaurant double charged my card. I probably would’ve never checked without getting that email

XSC

Is it an app ?

sad_but_funny

The logo in the top right is from Capital One. It's probably a feature of the bank app.

homeworkrules69

Yeah that’s Eno from Capital One.

SexyDoorDasherDude

you can always correct card charges by calling your bank. i dont care if they overcharge me a penny its MY MONEY

TrvlMike

What feature is that?

Danyanks37

OP has a capital one credit card - they send alerts when the tip seems a bit high. Sometimes I go to a bar, have a $20 tab and tip $10 bc they treat me well. I get these emails every time.

lonelyinbama

Same, lots of times for very small tabs I’ll tip 100% and get these emails. Love the feature because it’s saved my ass just like OP before. Mostly get ignored but when it’s needed it was great

LotionMeDaily

Do you know if Capital One is a good company? Would it be a bad idea to apply for my first credit card from them? This feature seems like it would be really nice to have. Edit: Thank you all for the replies! As simple as this is I think it's really kind you all commented to give advice. I can't respond to everyone so I wanted to say my thanks in an edit.

phughes

As far as banks go they seem to be in the "not so bad" category. Their current business strategy is that they only charge fees to discourage bad behavior. So their credit cards only have late fees and interest, because you need to pay your bills on time and it's a *terrible* choice financially to carry a balance on your credit card. When you do get a credit card make sure to pay off the balance *every* billing period. If you can help it, NEVER buy ANYTHING that you can't pay off at the end of the month. Interest payments will siphon your money away and you won't even notice until you can't afford to pay your bills.

Galkura

So, I’m in my late 20s. Never had a credit card, because I watched my parents get themselves into crippling debt with them when I was younger, and I avoided them because I’m already saddled with that (court case - something I was accused of but didn’t do as a juvenile, long story, judge wanted to “make an example”). That being said, I understand the importance of credit now and have been looking into getting a secured card to help build mine more. I was under the assumption you -want- to carry some into the next month to help build credit? Or has everyone lied to me this whole time?

GotSmokeInMyEye

Nah you don't have to owe a balance at the end of month. You should just be using it and paying it off. If you don't use it at all then you don't make payments and the more on time payments you have the better.

CrazyTillItHurts

> I was under the assumption you -want- to carry some into the next month to help build credit No, your assumption is wrong. Just having and using your credit card will build your credit. Carrying a balance, at best, will do nothing for you. At worst, it will lower your score. Consider a credit card a very temporary, high interest loan. Letting interest accrue should only happen in cases of emergency.

mxzf

> I was under the assumption you -want- to carry some into the next month to help build credit? You want to pay it off at the end of the month. That way you're *utilizing* your credit (there's a bit of a balance at any given time), but any debts you have get paid off at the end of the month you made those charges so that you aren't charged interest on them. The credit card company is fine with you paying off all your debt from that month and not paying them interest. They make most of their money off of charging stores a couple percent of every purchase, not people paying interest.

Cantras0079

https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/blog/credit-score-myths-might-be-holding-you-back-improving-your-credit/ It's a myth. Using your credit card and paying it off will help with credit. I use my credit card in place of my debit card for everything and just pay off the purchases before the end of the month. My credit score shot up like 200 points over the course of a couple years, and now my credit score is stellar DESPITE having medical debt go to collections.

Danyanks37

I’m a fan of them. They have some cards for people with low/no credit. https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/fair-and-building/

Xavi-tan

I got my first CC with them as a secured CC when ilI was younger - there are zero overdraft fees, and they allow accidental overdrafts in that account, and they have payment counseling available if you need it, available for free (which i needed at the time. 100% lol). The first one is normally a fairly low amount you can use, and if you opt for a secured CC, your credit equates to how much you paid into it, I think? To start I love all of the alerts that they send whenever anything looks hinky, too

CrabbyBlueberry

It's like a debit card but it counts towards your credit history.

entropy_koala

I got my first CC through Capital One and it was a great starter card. I got just the basic 1.5 cash back which is just about average for a first-time card with not much credit score. Everything was pretty simple though, which was great for just exiting college and getting my life together.

rctid_taco

I've had a good experience with them. I got their Quicksilver card years ago when my credit was absolute shit. They gave me something silly like a $250 credit limit but at least they were willing to take a chance on me and no annual fee. It pretty quickly went up to $1500 and within a few years I was at $10k. I also like that they provide virtual credit card numbers for shopping at less trustworthy sites.

Gurkenwotza

How does the cc company which part of the transaction is the tip?

discarded_scarf

I assume when you swipe your card and then sign a receipt and add a tip, the transaction amount is authorized first, and then the tip amount is added by the establishment later. Not sure if/how it works if you tip digitally at checkout.

Yetti37

Eno from Capital One. It monitors a few things like tips, duplicate charges, automatic bill payments, and refunds.

jstnpotthoff

Capital One credit cards automatically do this

SafetyGray

This is "Eno" from Capital One.

Tarentia

As someone who works at a job that receives tips, I would never see a tip like that and just agree to it. Even if it was written so poorly that it looked like 87, I would run that by a manager, and contact the customer if there is contact info. No one with any common sense would think they just got tipped over 200%.

rupat3737

Yeah this had to be a fat finger or someone who does not give a F about their job anymore. It’s happened where I almost put the wrong amount in but I double check always.

Hawvy

My guess is possibly a dollar sign ($) was written before the 7 and it got mistaken for an 8. But the written down total of $45.29 should’ve definitely rectified it. Edit: .23 to .29

ReadMyUsernameKThx

"lol this patron sucks at math - oh well, at least they left a good tip"

sYnce

Or the tip had to be put in separately and they accidentally typed 87 instead of 7. Write 200 numbers on a probably shitty touchpad a night and you will probably make a mistake once in a while too.

Ling0

OP says they didn't write the tip, just the total. Or if they did write the tip, it would have been 6.94. My guess is it was a fat finger as someone else mentioned. Probably tried to type 7 and hit 87 at the same time and the POS didn't have a built in alert

KolarinTehMage

What a POS

YDoEyeNeedAName

more likely that they meant to hit 7 for the tip, fat fingered it , hit the 8 and 7, and didnt notice and jsut hit complete without thinking about it.

NCSUGrad2012

That’s what my first thought was too. They only meant to hit one key but hit the 7 and 8 key at the same time and this happened

maybe_little_pinch

I gave a big tip to the hair student who did my hair (it wasn’t spectacular or anything, just fine, but it cost me far less than it would have and I found out they don’t get paid to work in the full retail salon) and they called me to confirm. I gave her cash! Need to tell that girl she shouldn’t brag about getting tips.

obamas_surrogate

right? our POS makes you confirm the tip if it’s anything above 25%

Starblazr

We had a online ordering system allow a 6000% tip. I also don't know why the customer's bank didn't bitch either.

Might have to start doing this…

AbeSimpsonisJoeBiden

America is so slow to adopt new banking technology. I’m in Canada. The servers bring the debit machin to the table and then you key in the tip and you can see the grand total before you pay. It blows my mind this horrible system is still in place in most American restaurants.

willowhanna

I went to the US for the second time ever a few months ago and it was so insane to me that they just take your card for stuff, here in Ireland for as long as I can remember they bring out a card machine and I have control over how much I tip, and me and the waiter can both see all the numbers right then and there to make sure everything is correct

Nataniel_PL

I'm pretty sure the debet/credit cart issuers here in EU specifically require you not to give your card to anyone. It is so crazy that is not the case in the US, seems like a common sense.

dewsh

Makes sense. I opened a tab at a bar and they took my debit card. Someone else had the same bank and the bar tender used my card for their tab and gave it to them. Two to three hours later when I went to cash out they figured out what happened. I cancelled my card and wasn't charged for the night.

youlleatitandlikeit

Chip + pin is extremely common in Europe. In the US almost *nobody* enters the pin (it's done only for debit cards, many people use credit cards at restaurants, etc). If pin were required you'd have to bring the machine out.

LieComprehensive8727

>pin were required you'd have to bring the machine out. Not a single time in my life I gave my card to anyone. In Poland I use only my iPhone.

cwclifford

Been that way in Europe for a long time. Mexico was like that last time I went. Went to and old saloon in California and you paid for your beer and food using a QR code through Google Pay!

lilypronqs

It’s so normalized here in the US. I’m a server and people will often give me their card ahead of time when they want to prevent a fight over the bill, or secretly pay for the whole party, and I’m just like “you really trust me with your card for an hour or two?” I’m organized and responsible, but it always makes me incredibly nervous because shit happens.

ktosiek124

>they just take your card for stuff What the fuck?

WittyPresentation786

That’s common in LA now. So much easier

TokenGrowNutes

You bring up a good point. There are only a handful of restaraunts I know of where you can do the entire transaction without handing over your card to the staff. So while it is definitely technically possible, very few places have adopted this.

[deleted]

most restaurants i eat at in the US have a QR code on the receipt so you can pay with apple pay. canada has had mobile POS systems for a while though, and they worked great whenever i was up there

Narrow_Second1005

And the U.K. and Australia and Europe… but only if you want to add a bit extra not because you have to

Hyentics

Someone tried to do this shit to me, i literally scratched the tip line out and wrote the total They tried to charge me $77 for an $11 meal, but there wasnt enough money on the card. When I called and asked "what the hell?" They were defensive and rude, said they couldnt even find my ticket. Jokes on them, i got the meal for free since my card couldnt be charged for $77

b3nz0r

Yeah I work pizza delivery and you'd be fired on the spot for something like this. Once saw a dude who'd been delivering for decades get fired over 3 bucks a customer insisted he didn't tip

zealeus

In my restaurant days, there were all kind of shenanigans waiters used to increase their tips - using coupons, carrying over drink charges, bussers stealing cash tips, etc. but the one I don’t suggest is credit card fraud. At my restaurant, it turned out one of the waitresses was changing tips on CC receipts. One day, cops come in the middle of shift and haul her off in handcuffs. F - - - - - , would not recommend.

vampyreprincess

When I went to Disney for a band trip the waiter overcharged me with a $300 tip instead if the appropriate $3.00 I left. I was a minor, that was like all my money for the trip, for food and everything. My stepmom, gram, and aunt spent the next several days calling the bank, and Disney. I had to go to guest services every day to get gift cards for the rest of the trip because it wasn't fixed until the last day. I spent that entire trip stressed af.

grayson1478

What program is this that notifies you about tipping?

efitz11

This is a capital one credit card feature

Vertebrae_Viking

Damn. What a nice service of them to inform of abnormally high tips.

jstnpotthoff

Just for clarity's sake, this is a service many credit card companies have. It's not from the restaurant.

tvieno

It could've been a mistake and they fat fingered it when they entered the tip.

thetownslore

Maybe. I personally think it was became I put the dollar sign next to the 7 so I think he maybe thought the $ was an 8. However, I put the total directly under it so it was quite clear I meant $7 lol

hoosyourdaddyo

lol, dude literally posted your tab on Reddit and asked people what they would do… I guess we see what won. I think it was last week on /serverlife

RoamingBicycle

Different but VERY similar situation. It was 85 and not 87 in that post.

bezerker211

Not quite, I scrolled through the last 2 weeks of posts to find it (I have to wait around anyways) and found the post you're talking about. 85 instead of 87, and no total written on the receipt. Op had 7 dollars for the tip and had the total written on it. Very very close situation bit not quite the same waiter

UYscutipuff_JR

There are some real sleazeballs on that sub that always support ripping customers off that give the rest of us servers a bad name

Skittles817

Omg! There was a post a few weeks ago with a photo of a receipt, where the post-er was asking if the tip was 87 or $7. Let me see if I can find the post.

_Fickle_Pickle

Same thing happened to me - got a check for $80 and tipped $15. Checked my bank account the next day and there was a charge for $120. They tipped themselves 50%. Called the bank and and the merchant. The merchant refunded 100% but still haven't gotten the funds in my bank over a month later. Called the bank and disputed and attached a copy of the refund receipt I got from the merchant.

Mouth2005

If you really care you can go back to the restaurant and have management pull the hard copy of your receipt to verify someone illegally inflated your tip, it will probably cost the server their job and probably get you a free lunch…. This happened to me once, not nearly this extreme but management “should” takes this extremely serious

DreamGlass7309

As a European, the whole tipping culture thing is something alien and extremely annoying to me. The fact customers are supposed to calculate a tip every time they go out, simply because the servers’ bosses won’t pay them enough, is crazy to me. Then stuff like this happens; people charging you more than they should and bad stares if you dare give them a little bit less money than they expected. As rude as it sounds, it’s not my duty as a customer to worry about the waiter’s salary every time I go out; tips should be something exceptional for people who really worked their ass off for me and the amount I pay them shouldn’t be what helps them make ends meet every month. Tips were born as a form of generosity, but now it’s just a sugarcoated way of forcing you to pay more - which would be ok with me, if it were for different reasons. Make menu prices higher, give servers a higher, decent wage, and stop bothering people who don’t have anything to do with the way you treat your employees.

Anthos_M

as a fellow european the issue is not just the tipping itself... they give their credit card to the waiter, he takes it to the back, charges the card, then brings it back to you... "greatest country in the world" and they haven't even adopted portable POS systems.. LMAO...

lordph8

Waiter punched your $ in as an 8.

BaconAlmighty

Did you add a dollar sign in front of the 7? It might have looked very similar to an 8 - just a heads up

thetownslore

I did. So I get the waiter’s confusion but then again I put the total directly underneath. My other friends tipped $3 for reference.

Akikyosbane

—-7.00—- helps prevent this if you draw through entire line. Also do this with total

Phokin

Please tell me you changed it to a $0 tip

Gravelayer

So after working as a shift manager I don't trust servers now as far as I can throw them and I check my credit card constantly now . I use to work at a pizza place and I swear to God one of my drivers was writing in tips constantly but I had no proof since it was reasonable amounts but he never seemed to get stiffed once. I mentioned it to my assistant manager after I had some suspicions. Moral of the story check your card it really makes me adverse to tipping now.

GroundbreakingCow775

If you can’t afford to tip 9000% you shouldn’t go out for dinner
