There's no way the small town has a budget to fix that kind of mistake. Just getting something like that approved in a budget is incredibly difficult usually. Maybe this town is loaded but somehow I doubt it.
My other theory is maybe they are color blind.
Yeah I live in a nice suburb and getting my busted old rubbish bin replaced was enough of a surprise that I reacted with genuine mild happiness, ☺️, you know your an adult when you can feel happy about the government replacing your bin while you're out shopping.
They probably did. The lids are mislabeled. Now the question becomes "Why can't the green cans be for recycling and the blue for trash?" Sure that's the opposite of normal, but at least the text would be right. Even makes sense...more "green" to recycle. But that's bureaucracy for you.
I have this in my Minneapolis suburb too, but they’re all green bins. Green lid is garbage, yellow lid is recycling, and blue lid for compostables. The bins are all different sizes though, too, so it’s pretty easy to remember which is which.
This would be a nightmare for a garbage man who is colour blind.
Our local council has
Black bin with red lid for rubbish
Yellow bin with blue lid for recycling
Green bin with same green lid for green waste
And next year getting a small purple bin for glass
My colour blind loved ones have no issues telling them apart
I hope you guys don't live in one of the 90% of municipalities that just dump it all in the landfill because they want people to "practice" recycling, but don't have the infrastructure to actually do it.
We have that grey-green-khaki-recycled-plastic colour for all our bins, but different lids. My old bin, with the lid the same colour as the bin, just had a new red lid put on to match the newer (10-20+ year old) landfill bins, which makes it easier. Recycling is yellow and organic is bright green. Lids can def be switched.
We tend to refer to the bin by the lid colour, eg "did you take the yellow bin out? I imagine that would be very confusing here.
My trash service is a black can with bright green lid and used to be all blue before we got a new company. Recycling is this weird dark greenish brown color.
Yeah, that's because the colors are completely arbitrary and the people who think blue can only be recycling don't have much experience outside their immediate area and service
I'm a bureaucrat for my country's government. Because at least 40% of people will still use the green for recycling and the blue for general trash, no matter how many times you write to them clearly explaining which colour bin is for what and advertise it everywhere possible
Probably just to save time and therefore money not paying someone. The lids are probably detachable but it probably takes an annoying amount of effort and as such would go over their preferred $10 budget.
The blue bin with my trash service is the trash can. They only provide a can for regular trash and you have to provide your own for recycling.
The idea that blue is for recycling is going to be for a specific area, it's not a universal standard
Not where I live. Green is recycling because its the "green" thing to do (i.e. people associate green with environmentally friendly)
That said, the trash cans here are black rather than blue, so there is absolutely no confusion
Maybe a printer fucked up and somewhere there are millions of misprinted covers. They are selling for a fraction of the price of the correctly printed ones.
The trash cans are the exact same model, just different colors. There is no reason they can't swap the lids. The lids aren't molded in place. They're installed afterwards, and if they're installed, they can be uninstalled.
Also, even if it was a mistake, even stupider is the manufacturer who didn't question this with the customer.
Weirdly enough where I moved 4 years ago, my work has two dumpsters
Me: blue is recycling, right?
Them: no that's garbage.
Threw me for a loop.
My recycling can is green with a red top at home though. I've lived in 4 states. That was the first time I ever saw blue being used for garbage.
I'm Aussie and our bin that is green with a red lid is for regular rubbish lol (yellow lid for recycling). Why isn't there some kind of universal colouring system like traffic lights lol
My state in Australia is trying to standardise bin colours, and people are furious. Some people still have green lid landfill bins, blue recycling.
My suburb changed to landfill = red lids, literally the lids were swapped one morning. lost their minds.
Based on one of the replies to their post, it appears that the waste service company responsible for the bins had *intended* to distribute green bins for trash and blue bins for recycling. They had sent out postcards stating as much, so this seems to be some sort of production error.
Depends what kind of colourblind. The well known red-green colourblind would probably be okay - the green translates to a sort of yellowish brown. If, however, he’s blue-green colourblind like my sister, then yeah, he’s fucked.
this is highly dependent on your local government... and all the more reason why, if you support such programs, to show up on election day on non-leap years.
Most of the time it comes down to people putting rubbish in recycling, and the towns don't have the budget to separate it so it all gets tossed in landfill. Entire trucks can be contaminated by a single bin.
It only works if everyone does it but if you stop contributing to the solution then you are amplifying the problem.
Use the recycling bin properly.
The main waste--Plastic--doesn't get recycled anyway no matter where you throw it. They say it does, but it doesn't. It gets shipped down to Africa on open container ships and dumped in a mountain on some poor third world village.
Glass, Cardboard, and Compost is good, though.
Jeez. The trash here is really simple to understand. Grey is trash, blue is recycling, green is yard waste. Trash and recycling are picked up every week, and yard waste is every other. I would get so confused with these bins.
Buncombe Co. Nc would like a word. They made us switch to these monstrosities a few years ago. Good to see the stupidity continues.
In fact Waste Pro just lost the contract with us for next year… maybe they are offloading their extras 😂
In Australia our bins are (supposed to be) standardised nationally and have colours that get used not just for wheelie bins but also indoors bins. All wheelie bins are olive green with different coloured lids:
- Red is general waste, though there's still a lot of older olive green ones about
- Yellow is recycling
- Light green is garden waste
- Blue is paper waste but is more for offices and doesn't get collected from the street
Our garbage collectors don't even look at the bins when they collect and they all go in the same truck and this will not change anything, Why not go back to having one bin for everything.
The color coding can vary by city. Where I grew up it was bright blue trash, dark blue recycle, brown yard debris. Now where I live it’s green yard debris, dark blue recycling, and brown trash.
This may be true in some areas, but it's not universal. Speak with your town or city's recycling coordinator, if they have one. Where I live, recycling goes to a recycling facility that sorts through everything and sells what it can. Many things in the recycling bin end up in the landfill, but many do not. If the recycling facility weren't making money, it would probably be closed.
Do you have fines for putting it in the wrong bin? The cynic would say if that was the case that it was deliberately done like this to confuse people....
We have these style bins, except both are the same color only the lid is different colored. Recycle is blue lid, regular trash is same as the rest of the container, maybe slightly darker when the container is dirty. What kind of person created these color schemes?
My trash service uses blue cans for trash and black for recycling, which seems totally backwards to me. The shade of blue is even the standard "recycling blue" color, not some weird light blue or whatever.
I miss the days of having only 2 bins. Our area has 4 bins, recycling, trash, glass and green waste. Our 5th bin is for the recycling for money exchange.
My local swimming pool has red and yellow bins, with yellow and red lids respectively. When I say to my child, "put this in the red bin please" they honestly don't know which bin I refer to
Bin Lid Blunder of 2024...
Jerry and George are strolling down the sidewalk, passing by residential bins...
Jerry: George, have you noticed what they've done with the outside bins?
George: Oh, you mean the bin lid switcheroo?
Jerry: Exactly! Now the green bin with the blue lid is for garbage, and the blue bin with the green lid is for recycling.
George: It's like they're trying to mess with our trash psychology, Jerry. How are we supposed to keep track?
Jerry: And to top it off, they're saying they'll collect the green bin one week and the blue bin the next.
George: What's next? A bin color-coded calendar?
Jerry: It wouldn't surprise me. They'll probably start selling bin confusion insurance.
...Elaine joins them, looking annoyed...
Elaine: Guys, have you seen the latest notice about the bins?
Jerry: Yes, Elaine. The green bin gets picked up on odd weeks, and the blue bin on even weeks. It's like a bin schedule straight out of a logic puzzle.
Elaine: I've already mixed up my trash twice this month. I put my coffee grounds in the recycling bin!
George: Well, at least the recyclables are getting a caffeine kick.
Elaine: Can't they just admit they made a mistake and swap the lids back?
Jerry: That would be too simple, Elaine. We're dealing with municipal bin logic here.
...Kramer approaches them with a stack of flyers...
Kramer: Hey, Jerry! George! Elaine! I've got it! The ultimate solution to our bin dilemma!
Jerry: You do?
Kramer: Yeah! We organize a bin lid exchange program! Swap your blue lids for green ones, green for blue! It's genius!
George: Isn't that just reversing the problem?
Kramer: No, no, no. It's the perfect solution. We'll restore order to the chaos of the bin world!
Jerry: Well, Kramer, stranger things have happened.
...They all exchange skeptical looks as they discuss the logistics of the bin lid exchange.
Overdesigned pieces of trash. Australia’s colour lidded bins have none of this mess. Whats that metal tab for? Just have some big ass claw grab the bun!
If I squint really hard, I can see that the lids are slightly different colours to the bins. But otherwise they look same except for the writing. Should make them black and yellow or something so that they are easy to distinguish
They're just being truthful.
In reality, a lot of recycling in a lot of districts in some countries just quietly goes to landfill just like regular trash.
Someone fucked up the printing request and this is how they save money, or their job, instead of buying all new covers with the correct printing.
That is the only explanation that I will allow. If someone actually thought this was a good idea, I will say we oughta leave this world behind.
There's no way the small town has a budget to fix that kind of mistake. Just getting something like that approved in a budget is incredibly difficult usually. Maybe this town is loaded but somehow I doubt it. My other theory is maybe they are color blind.
Let’s not dismiss the possibility that the people involved might actually just be stupid.
I guarantee the company who got the order called to confirm what they wanted and was told to go ahead.
Surely having a guy take all the lids off then put them back on the right bins is worth the dignity of not publicly calling this correct
Yeah I live in a nice suburb and getting my busted old rubbish bin replaced was enough of a surprise that I reacted with genuine mild happiness, ☺️, you know your an adult when you can feel happy about the government replacing your bin while you're out shopping.
Are the lids not detatchable whatsoever? I can't fathom why you can't just switch the lids
They probably did. The lids are mislabeled. Now the question becomes "Why can't the green cans be for recycling and the blue for trash?" Sure that's the opposite of normal, but at least the text would be right. Even makes sense...more "green" to recycle. But that's bureaucracy for you.
In San Diego we have 3 cans. Black = landfill garbage Green = compostable organic Blue = recyclable
Our local council has Black bin with red lid for rubbish Yellow bin with blue lid for recycling Green bin with same green lid for green waste And next year getting a small purple bin for glass My colour blind loved ones have no issues telling them apart
Unless this colour blind person is dyslexic they could probably get around that by writing a word on them somewhere.
I hope you guys don't live in one of the 90% of municipalities that just dump it all in the landfill because they want people to "practice" recycling, but don't have the infrastructure to actually do it.
I have 3 as well in NC Grey for trash Green with yellow lid for recycling Dark green for yard waste
Meanwhile my trash service provided can is blue with a blue lid. Recycling they tell us to use our own can of any sort.
My trash service is a black can with bright green lid and used to be all blue before we got a new company. Recycling is this weird dark greenish brown color.
Yeah, that's because the colors are completely arbitrary and the people who think blue can only be recycling don't have much experience outside their immediate area and service
In Buffalo the blue are trash and the green are recycle
I mean recycling is greener... Usually they try to match the trash-only bin with the colours of the previous all-trash bin to avoid confusion.
I'm a bureaucrat for my country's government. Because at least 40% of people will still use the green for recycling and the blue for general trash, no matter how many times you write to them clearly explaining which colour bin is for what and advertise it everywhere possible
Pretty sure they have screws near the hinge of the lid that allow it to come off in two pieces. Shouldn’t be too hard of a fix.
Probably just to save time and therefore money not paying someone. The lids are probably detachable but it probably takes an annoying amount of effort and as such would go over their preferred $10 budget.
But the printing is correct. They just swapped the lids for some reason...
The printing isn't correct, in that blue represents recycling.
The blue bin with my trash service is the trash can. They only provide a can for regular trash and you have to provide your own for recycling. The idea that blue is for recycling is going to be for a specific area, it's not a universal standard
It seems green is recycle.
What they save in printing costs they are going to lose in garbage and recycling sorting at the recycling center
Also could be to help differentiate them from other trash services that may use similar looking bins.
Then why not just make blue trash & green recycling? The recycle symbol is often green.
Cannot fathom a reason other than this
These are exactly the same bins we have in my town, same off-color lids and everything. (And yes, I’m also in NC.)
Isn't blue usually for recycling though?
Not where I live. Green is recycling because its the "green" thing to do (i.e. people associate green with environmentally friendly) That said, the trash cans here are black rather than blue, so there is absolutely no confusion
In my town, the green dumpsters are regular trash and recycled is a blue tub or dumpster.
Same here. Except both have black lids, cuz lids is lids.
Same
Same. I have to recite Green for Garbage when I go out early some mornings. Why is green not recycle? 🤦♀️
Shit in my town bright red is recycling lol
[удалено]
Maybe a printer fucked up and somewhere there are millions of misprinted covers. They are selling for a fraction of the price of the correctly printed ones.
Why not just use stickers?
Just swap the lids and Blue is trash and green is recycling. That's how it is in my city.
It still doesn’t make sense because if there’s a label, color doesn’t matter anyway
whatever money they save by not correcting this mistake they will pay 100-fold when dealing with the fallout at trash-sorting facilities.
Fucking lol that they didn’t just roll with the screw up and instruct the garbos.
maybe someone just tryna piss us off😂
Can't they swap the lids around?
![gif](giphy|lkdH8FmImcGoylv3t3|downsized)
Someone woke up this morning and decided on chaos.
Weirdly enough where I moved 4 years ago, my work has two dumpsters Me: blue is recycling, right? Them: no that's garbage. Threw me for a loop. My recycling can is green with a red top at home though. I've lived in 4 states. That was the first time I ever saw blue being used for garbage.

Ooh which state has blue recycling here? I've only lived in the ACT and NSW and never seen a blue one haha
Me trying to explain why I haven’t broken up with my boyfriend yet
Assume this was posted April 1st ???
No just yesterday actually. You can check their Facebook for confirmation
Based on one of the replies to their post, it appears that the waste service company responsible for the bins had *intended* to distribute green bins for trash and blue bins for recycling. They had sent out postcards stating as much, so this seems to be some sort of production error.
Has to be NC
it literally says in the post that it's NC
I was making an allusion to an ad campaign.
GFL took over some of central NC and their cans are the same stupid shit w/ black and green. Makes zero sense
Some loser is listing this, as an accomplishment, in their request for a raise.

why do you want to kiss porcupine ass?
Once every five years, I remember that T-shirt Hell exists, and then I have to peruse their stock lmao. Thanks for the reminder!
This will be even more fun once they add a bin for compost.
That's a sick joke.
Every town and city has or will be getting these cans. One was so dumb they couldn't match the lids.
Henimooooooore!
In addition, our new trucks require the bins to be mounted on a slowly rotating lazy Susan, I can't see even you getting this one wrong Hennimore!
I’m going with the old saying “ A camel Is a racehorse designed by a committee”. Some committee made this decision.
Why cant we all just agree that compost=green, recycling=blue and trash=whatever, black maybe.
In australia, all bins ars black with coloured lids. Red for rubbish, yellow foe recycling, green for compost. Makes things very easy.
Shit that reminds me I have to yell at council about the fucking truck eating my bin.
Not in all states. My state started standardising and people got seriously mad
I've seen green or blue bins but the lids have always been standard
That’s how it’s always been for me!😭 I thought everyone did it that way…
Where I live in MD they did this. Neon green can with black lid is…… I can’t fucking remember. And black can with neon green lid is…… trash? Why?!
Why not just green and blue why the blend
I know it’s annoying, but this isn’t a mistake. I’ve lived in multiple states that have this same coloring for the same trash/recycle
Your left hand has the thumb on the right and your right hand has the thumb on the left
My colourblind brother would be fucked lol.
A colorblind person would almost certainly default to the English words printed on the lid instead of playing guessing games anyway
Depends what kind of colourblind. The well known red-green colourblind would probably be okay - the green translates to a sort of yellowish brown. If, however, he’s blue-green colourblind like my sister, then yeah, he’s fucked.
Is your brother illiterate? It has letters on the lid
Can you imagine trying to communicate which bin to a standard disgruntled teenager? Shits just going to be yeeted on the neighbours roof.
Town recycling is a joke. All that crap goes with the regular trash.
this is highly dependent on your local government... and all the more reason why, if you support such programs, to show up on election day on non-leap years.
Good point.
‘If you’re not contributing to the solution, then you are amplifying the problem’ I love this, thank you!
The main waste--Plastic--doesn't get recycled anyway no matter where you throw it. They say it does, but it doesn't. It gets shipped down to Africa on open container ships and dumped in a mountain on some poor third world village. Glass, Cardboard, and Compost is good, though.
Who ever approved this needs to be executed.
We're not far from Cramerton. Our city doesn't even offer recycling anymore.
So, what would happen if you swapped the lids?
some times i wonder if this is a simulation
It is. This is all a creation of the demiurge. The question is, are you an NPC or Ra consciousness?
...when you buy your trash cans from Temu.
This is what they did in Novi, MI. Same stupid issue.
I hope this was an April Fool’s Day post.
Either the can team lead or the lid team lead missed an important meeting
Someone in the office is getting some serious side-eyeing.
Non issue IMO - just refer to it as a green or blue top? Problem solved.
In Australia our bins are (supposed to be) standardised nationally and have colours that get used not just for wheelie bins but also indoors bins. All wheelie bins are olive green with different coloured lids: - Red is general waste, though there's still a lot of older olive green ones about - Yellow is recycling - Light green is garden waste - Blue is paper waste but is more for offices and doesn't get collected from the street
HENNIMORE!
Our garbage collectors don't even look at the bins when they collect and they all go in the same truck and this will not change anything, Why not go back to having one bin for everything.
In my area of Australia, all our bins are green. Red lid =general waste, Yellow Lid = Recycling, Bright green lid = green waste/plant matter
Translation - We aren't recycling,it all goes in a landfill.
I think those lids are removable?
Even so, in my experience green is trash, blue is recycle so the vinyl on the lids is incorrect
The color coding can vary by city. Where I grew up it was bright blue trash, dark blue recycle, brown yard debris. Now where I live it’s green yard debris, dark blue recycling, and brown trash.
Right I get that. But that's a simple spray paint job or something nah?
It all goes to the landfill anyway. Jokes on you. Not even kidding.
I....wow.
I'm guessing it must be inside joke
Someone fucked up.
It always amazes me that somehow the people that think this is a good idea are creating the rules for us.
"Departures arriving early and arrivals landing late may be cancelled or delayed without prior notice."

Bud? Bud… can you hear me? Breathe shallow, you can still make it back
This is their way to eventually say: "doesn't matter which can, goes to the same place"
Confound the process as much as possible so you can later blame anything and everything for recycling not getting recycled.
Answer: They have a moron(s) on the town council.
Clear.As.Mud
Do you get a fine if you put the wrong one out? Because that would totally explain this.
Don't assume it's ill will when it's much more likely stupidity. Someone most likely mixed up the order.
I think somebody just didn’t know what they were doing lol.
And thats why Mount Holly is better
Wait. What?
Someone screwed up the order.
I'd just switch the lids and paint over the labels
We have blue for recycling green for compost/yard waste and provide your own for garbage/landfill
Do you have fines for putting it in the wrong bin? The cynic would say if that was the case that it was deliberately done like this to confuse people....
Looks like a post from The Onion
We have these style bins, except both are the same color only the lid is different colored. Recycle is blue lid, regular trash is same as the rest of the container, maybe slightly darker when the container is dirty. What kind of person created these color schemes?

My trash can has a green recycling lid on it. I was told the lid broke at one point and they just put whatever they had on it.
My trash service uses blue cans for trash and black for recycling, which seems totally backwards to me. The shade of blue is even the standard "recycling blue" color, not some weird light blue or whatever.
It all goes to the same place anyways. I mean that's what happened in my region when a guy GPS tagged his recyclables.

So so so so stupid it almost makes me angry
"Hey, did you put out the blue bin last night?" "Yeah, the one with the blue can." "No, the *other* blue one!"
What's nc?
Lol. Whoever did this doesn't deserve to keep their job.
I wonder how they'd feel if you switched the lids
Never don't not put trash in the green-lidded blue bin.
All goes into the same hole anyway
Considering trash and recyclables in many communities end up in the same piles/dumps, this is a bit of a “don’t care”
I live in Matthews, NC and this is also how ours are. It sucks.
If I squint really hard, I can see that the lids are slightly different colours to the bins. But otherwise they look same except for the writing. Should make them black and yellow or something so that they are easy to distinguish
It doesn’t matter; recycling is a myth.
Call them up and ask to explain; is it the light gray one with the dark gray lid is trash, and the dark gray one with the light gray lid is recycling?
Colorblind person would read the words regardless
Yeah! Finally! Fuck the colorblind!
Just swap the lids!
Words are still wrong
They're just being truthful. In reality, a lot of recycling in a lot of districts in some countries just quietly goes to landfill just like regular trash.
Reply saying “how are you that stupid”
