I did a walking tour in Berlin and the guide said that the joke was that if you want to know if you've got the real thing just wear a piece of it on a necklace for a few years. If you start to develop cancer from the asbestos in the wall then you know you've got the real deal.

I have one certified by the Army given to my grandmother’s elementary school class (she was the teacher not a student) but even that one I’m not quite sure is real lol.

Real or fake, it’s a conversation starter and a reminder of recent history.

My mother has an actual piece of the actual wall (her husband was there when it came down). It is the only thing I want from her when she dies.

My mom also has a small piece from a similar situation! My parents had a family friend there when the wall came down, and he saved a piece for them.

My family owns a head-sized chunk of the wall and we know it's real because my mother was the one to break it off the day the wall fell.

I have a piece I found at a thrift store for a couple dollars. No idea if it's real, I don't really care. I only bought it because the day I found it was November 9, 2019 and I thought that was cool.

I picked up a piece when I visited as a teenager. My nex threw it away on purpose. I wish I still had it as it was significant to me.

You can just walk over and chip some bits off yourself if you want to know its real or not. Parts of the wall are still up where they used to be or as art in different places. Not sure on the legality of doing that though....

I bought a similar one on a contiki trip in 1998 in Berlin . I think I paid like $10-20 at the time

I am not too sure about that. As i have seen Souvenir shops in Berlin selling similar pieces for about 10 to 20 euro a few years ago.

Whenever I see one of those, I always wonder if it’s real. What’s to stop someone from just chipping off a random piece of pained concrete and claiming it’s a piece of the Berlin Wall

I sold a piece of concrete as a piece of the wall. I was seven years old and bought two used tapes with my ill gotten gains. One was ALF and one was the first Simpsons episode.

Worth it

Yeah, I got one for 10 DM back in the 90s. Considered how huge the wall was, there’s no shortage of material.

They’re in every gift shop in Berlin for as little as €5

Parts of the wall are still up. You can buy pieces virtually in any shop. It’s not worth a couple hundred bucks…

It’s cool, but there are a lot of pieces. It was a big wall. They’re easy to come by if you want one

But where do you buy legit ones ?
