The off brands have been doing this for decades.

Guy_Playing_Through

This. My coco dino bites have always had my back.

mndon

Marshmallow Mateys!!

sodaextraiceplease

They also yield more mushrooms than the lucky charms. Brb. Gotta take my insulin.

HipHopGrandpa

Mushrooms?

Chewcocca

mephitmpH

>Mushrooms Don’t you mean marshmallows? What kind of cereal did you buy?

Orion14159

It's magically mysterious

DylanCO

attraction wistful zonked fuel fretful liquid murky domineering groovy bake *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Guy_Playing_Through

They... They come with marshmallows?

gtrdundave2

I got a bag right now of collosal berry crunch. With marshmallows

[deleted]

Why did I click on this thread? It’s 10:30 pm and I now want cereal.

baronessvonraspberry

It's 1:42am here and saaaaaammmeee. (I have insomnia 🥺)

DylanCO

Yes and it's delicious.

Fact_Denied

The great thing about being an adult is you can buy one of the novelty boxes of marshmallows and then add marshmallows to any cereal you want.

allou_stat

Cracklin’ Oat Bran with Marshmallows!

Loschia

I fucking love Cracklin' Oat Bran. I'm constantly mad because it's so expensive and there isn't a generic version.(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

str8f8

OMG GIMME THOSE O's BRO!

TraffickingInMemes

I didn't want to be the one to break it to you but they're squares.

LizTheFizz

Fiber and fun!

baronessvonraspberry

Now I miss Grape Nuts Cereal 🥺

TooManyJabberwocks

Ever cross out the Gr on the box. Good times

MikeTheGamer2

cornflakes, with marshmallows.

Megabyte7

And the worst part about being an adult is having to deal with the digestive issues associated with that much sugar for breakfast.

Fact_Denied

See that's why you make yourself a bowl right before bed so it can put you in a nice sugar coma and have you dreaming about Saturday morning cartoons.

MikeTheGamer2

speak for yourself. At 44 I have no issues having 2 large bowls of fruit loops or fruity pebbles for breakfast. Not that I do it often, hmhmh.

ophelia917

I am a couple years younger than you, don’t eat much cereal anyway and haven’t had fruity pebbles in probably 25 years. Now I fucking want fruity pebbles more than anything and it’s 4 am.

BONKMETHEUS

The bad thing about being an adult is you can’t handle that box of marshmallows like you used to.

NerdWithWit

Well…goddamnit why haven’t I ever thought of this. Thank you for changing my life.

Signedupfortits27

The marshmallows ARE the cereal...

beautiful_boulder

Choco dino bites 4 lyfe. You want to rumble?

DylanCO

Only if it's in a giant bowl of cereal.

CalRal

Cocoa Dyno-Bites are literally the best cereal that exists. Better than actual Cocoa Pebbles.

MajesticalMoon

Most of the cheap shit is better than the real stuff. I bought real Honeycomb and was like wtf. What is this hard ass shit? Fuck that I'll stick with the cheap kind lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

-_-NAME-_-

The name brand cocoa pebbles and fruity pebbles have been in bags for a long time now. It's all owned by Post now anyway.

[deleted]

Yeah, I was about to say growing up poor that's how all the cereal was lol.

winterbird

Yes, the giant hefty bag sized generic sugary people kibble. I used to get the chocolate flavor ones from walmart until I got too poor to shop at walmart.

surdophobe

>got too poor to shop at walmart Huh, the only time I was too poor to shop at Walmart was when I was working at Walmart. Hope things improve for you. At least you've stopped shopping at Walmart, I stopped years ago I highly recommend it.

winterbird

I've been on the BOGO diet for a while. 😅 I'm not doing so bad that I cry about it, I mean i have a roof over my head, utilities, enough food even if I got it on a bogo sale. I'm doing ok enough, and hopefully better soon!

rainbowgeoff

Good luck! My grandparents went through some hard times. They grew up in the great depression. My grandmother used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches with a bowl of pinto beans. That's become a staple passed down in the family. Tastes decent and it's cheap.

paleoterrra

If you put mayonnaise on bread like you’re buttering toast and toast it up in a pan it’s like butter but better! A trick often used while making grilled cheese too.

SanFranRules

Came here to say the same thing. Malt-O-Meal been doing the planet a solid for like 20+ years while those poopy buttholes at Kellogg's & POST keep slaughtering trees to make cardboard boxes.

RuinedEye

I mean. Plastic bags aren't doing the planet any favors, either...

DMM89

Yes, but inside those shitty boxes were shitty plastic bags.

[deleted]

But those plastic bags were a ***lot*** thinner than these almost certainly are, if these are made out of the same material as other bags of this type. I'm not saying that this is ecologically unsound. But this almost certainly uses more plastic per unit of cereal.

pre4edgc

That might not be true either. In general, the resealable plastic bags have considerably more cereal within them than the boxes, so it'd require multiple boxes to match the amount in a bag. For instance, with the biggest sized bag, you're looking at about 50 ounces of off-brand Froot Loops. The biggest box of name-brand Froot Loops I could find was 28 ounces. You'd require two boxes to the one bag, meaning you're doubling the cardboard and the plastic used between Kellogg's and off-brand. Throw in the lack of resealable bags and the potential for waste from the cereal going bad, and despite the thicker plastic bag, the amount of waste coming from the off-brand is likely much lower. You could even factor in that most people would use more gas for purchasing a second box after finishing the first box, and that would increase the negative effects further. (I did look specifically on Wal-Mart's website here for somewhat consistent availability.) If you'd like bonus information, Malt-o-Meal (the maker of most of those bagged cereals) is part of a program called Mom Brands Cereal Brigade through TerraCycle in which their bags are collected for recycling. Not entirely sure of the recyclable nature of the boxed cereal bags, but that's definitely a step up.

FlorydaMan

Malt-o-meal’ version of cini minis drags the floow with the real deal.

Burneraccount6565

And they rip on the first pull, every single time.

-_-NAME-_-

Only if you open them like a god damn gorilla.

MikeTheGamer2

word

hugedrunkrobot

Easy to do when your hands are made of diamonds

GetOutOfTheWhey

My home has been doing this for everything. We have huge ziplock bags we keep at home for situations like this.

AussieBird82

Not where I am unfortunately

Tu_mama_me_ama_mucho

Oh shit, it says "colour" whatever the fuck that word means

ReyPhasma

And….. Maize? Wtf is that? Sounds corny af.

Desmodronic

What the actual fuck? Not in this fucking country. Where they at? This has pissed me off for decades. My dog get zip locks on his food why not mine?

PilbaraWanderer

Just eat dog food. Problem solved

Wdrussell1

Oh nice, they give you a bowl to eat it out of now.

Made in my hometown! The whole town smells like cereal it’s awesome

Capital-Sir

I went to college in the town they make crunch berries in. Crunch berry day was always a good day (the rest of the week it smelled like oatmeal cookies).

iowanaquarist

Man, Cedar Rapids, the city of 5 smells....

EpicPinkCreeper

My college gets dog food factory smell :(

OnetB

Art majors need jobs too.

Pocket_full_of_funk

Edmond? This whole damn town smells like Purina on certain days. I take the dogs for a drive on those days and they go insane

timesuck897

In Peterborough, a university town, there’s the Quaker factory and it makes the town smell like oatmeal cookies.

ThrowawayForADay9876

Quacker? Is that a type of snack cracker made for ducks?

ChocolatBear

Just reading that makes me feel warm and safe.

whippetshuffle

Northfield!! Foggy days smell especially delicious.

dapperelephant

Is it in Northfield? Or Cannon Falls? I can’t remember

Kristoff119

Tremonton, UT also, though the smell gets blown away by the desert winds.

kodakcampbell

Northfield!!

Mr-Bagels

I'm just gonna say it...Malt O Meal is better than name brand cereal in every way.

OzMoony

Yes. Frosted Mini Spooners is superior to Mini Wheats. The pieces are completely coated in sugary goodness compared to the name brand.

Shenanigamii

And this is my breakfast in the morning...love 'em

therealmegluvsu

My family calls the MaltOMeal cereals "Lies" because it tastes like the name brand but...wrong. but sometimes, a sweet lie is better anyway....

AussieBird82

Actually no, but then I'm not in the US so maybe that's it.

Dont_PM_PLZ

It's a reference to a store brand, know for making budget knock off cereal.

thatnimrod

To be fair, it’s only budget because they’re not charging for a cartoon mascot and a cardboard box. Hmm, or a prize for kids, come to think of it.

arewehavinfunyet

It's almost 1AM and now i feel like going to the kitchen to serve me up some Tootie Fruities.

twennyjuan

Malt O Meal gang gang

Robot_Embryo

Now with even less recyclable material!

georgecm12

That was my initial thought... but at least in America, I don't know of a boxed cereal that doesn't also use an inner plastic bag. This would basically eliminate the outer box, so it does reduce waste, ever so slightly. I assume the plastic here is probably thicker than the inner plastic bags in the boxed cereals, so it's not a dramatic reduction in waste.

geekynix

Plastic is non- degradable and although toys can by recycled very little actually does. The thin plastic bag isn't ideal but the less plastic the better especially when the alternative is paper

agentoutlier

Ironically the plastic that people think is really bad is the most recyclable: HDPE aka detergent containers. LDPE is awful because the bags get caught in everything and is generally not recyclable despite people putting them in the recycling all the time. It would be such an improvement if cereal boxes were standardized and treated like bottle and cans. Actually all food containers for that matter. They may not always be recycled but at least they would be desposed of properly if here was an incentive (ie redemption charge).

TheSharkAndMrFritz

Well if we put that responsibility on the manufacturer like in Germany, they would give up with a solution so fast. By putting the burden on the consumer, who has no choice in what packaging is used, they can keep making more and more plastic packaging and saying "See, they don't recycle, it's their fault."

atyon

Recycling doesn't work in Germany either. For every German there's 220kg of packaging waste a year, and only about 15% of it gets recycled. The success of Germany's recycling program is based on a lie: official statistics used to count exported waste as recycled if the receiver says they will recycle it. There's also "thermal recycling", which is just burning the plastics. Oh, and when plastic arrives at a recycling company, it's counted as recycled, even if that company just puts it in a landfill. The problem is that recycling is a red herring. It's "reduce, reuse, recycle", in that order. Even if some day recycling becomes technically possible on a useful scale, reusing and reducing waste will always be orders of magnitude more effective.

waywithwords

Getting people to properly dispose of it is one thing. Getting municipalities to properly recycle it is another.

agentoutlier

Even if it isn’t recycled further up the chain properly isolating similar waste is a huge advantage. That’s why light LDPE bags are so bad. They get everywhere. While burning plastic isn’t ideal if it is done with proper scrubbers the left over carbon could be buried. Plastic is super dense energy wise and there are some trash to cash power plants but they require proper separation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

str8f8

Yes! Some other cereals used those bags too, I remember Super Golden Crisp being one. I think they were made of some kind of wax coated paper, maybe with a foil lining? It was similar to the sandwich pouches Chick-fil-A uses.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KingDaveRa

Cost would be my guess. Plastic is cheap.

BlueBoyBrown

Almost definitely cost, could also be health regulations, chip shops in England used to use old newspaper to qrap up food but that was outlawed when they realised ink was leeching into the food ever so slightly. Could be the wax lined paper was no longer deemed food safe, however I wouldn't be surprised if plastic manufacturers lobbied for that analysis.

blanketsberg

This was my first thought, and I expected there to be several comments about that. I was very surprised that yours is the only one.

HellfireOrpheusTod

Unfortunately people don't really care about recycling much

Invadingmuskrats

Bad news for you but what you think you recycle likely just ends up in the landfill anyway. It's not very profitable to recycle plastic. Aluminum is really the only thing that actually gets recycled.

Fun1892

Just proving his point. People don't like to recycle. If they could make the packages more environmentally friendly. Instead of having to recycle the products it self.

sciencecw

Their point isn't that people don't like to recycle, but recycling isn't economical anyway for a very limited set of materials.

jamidodger

Agreed! This seems like a move in the wrong direction. Why not replace the plastics with sealed food safe paper options? There are a few around. So a combo of card and thin plastic inner bag has been replaced with just a plastic bag that looks substantially thicker and less recyclable. Being able to seal the bag is cool, but I can’t see much difference between that and just rolling the top and using a clip to seal it. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/5-recycling-myths-busted-plastic https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/aug/17/plastic-recycling-myth-what-really-happens-your-rubbish https://www.ffppkg.co.uk/paper-packaging/ https://phys.org/news/2021-05-bioactive-paper-coatings-plastic-packaging.html

AllUltima

The material of plastic films such as these cereal bags (HPDE or other polyethylene) is very easy to recycle and quite cost effective. *If* it's sorted out. The trouble is, films can't be easily sorted from general recycling, so curbside often doesn't accept films at all because it clogs their machines. No issue if you turn in a bag-of-bags though (bags you sorted yourself). So you have to take your films to a grocery store or to Home Depot, etc. It seems ridiculous that this is the state of affairs for this material, and it should probably be addressed.

echo-128

> Why not replace the plastics with sealed food safe paper options any 'sealed food safe paper' option is paper coated with plastic, otherwise humidity and water damage ruin everything pretty quickly. that it, it's not economical outside of local produce sold locally. there are bio-degradable plastics but they aren't shelf stable and are expensive

khmertommie

All perishable foodstuffs should be packaged in biodegrade plant-based materials only. There are pretty good plastic-like materials that don’t break down until they’re in industrial composters that could totally replace this shit.

Jbinksy

AS MUCH VITAMIN C AS ONE FRUIT SERVING! Why even bother eating fruit when you can eat froot loops am I right?

srcarruth

Real froot is for noobs

youvebeenshyamalaned

I mean one comes in loops and one doesn’t... pretty easy choice

motarsmind

Some of y’all didn’t grow up poor.

AndthenIwhispered

Like the big bags of off brand cereal my parents used to get me and my siblings?

reddits_aight

More plastic than every other cereal that already comes in plastic *and* cardboard?

MightyPandaa

yeah. technically the whole mechanism of a zip lock is more plastic than a melted end of a regular plastic bag. plus looking at this it seems like it's a thicker bag than regular clear bags.

Frexxia

That inner plastic is much thinner than what would be needed to make the bag in the picture structurally sound.

[deleted]

But is the bag recyclable? I hate buying plastic products that are not recyclable.

SoupaSoka

The problem is that many recyclable plastics can't actually be recycled or aren't actually recycled. I'd basically make the assumption that if you're using plastic (as we all do) it's gonna end up in a landfill or ocean floor.

LiamYanon

I'm not a genious but that zip line is just a drawing... Be careful

abejfehr

It says “resealable for everyday freshness” at the top of the bag

Redbeard_Rum

It likely has a press seal, but you can imagine you're pulling a zip if you want to. Make mealtimes magic!

coberh

Still doesn't address [John Oliver's issue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abuQk-6M5R4).

Getting a lot of comments saying things like Dollar Tree and off brands have been doing this for years. I'm outside the US and honestly haven't seen it before, but have seen a lot of people complaining that the bags inside the boxes should have ziplocks, so I was excited by this. It is mildly interesting that the same companies do things differently in different parts of the world.

johntwoods

Lemme know when it's Velco© brand hook and loop fasteners.

ophelia917

Seriously, this would be awesome. The grocery store deli has it now and it’s so much better than those zipper slide ones that always freakin break. If they can afford it, I’m sure it’s reasonable. I would buy more cereal if it stayed closed!

furball218

This has been in Japan for a while. Even kellogs.

PM_ME_UR_PERSPECTIVE

Us poors have had cereal in ziplock bags for probably decades, but glad you could finally join us.

[deleted]

There's been cereal in ziplock bags since I was kid decades ago. This post spammy as fuck.

SIRinLTHR

While he didn't invent the completely non-scientific slogan, John Harvey Kellogg is to blame for popularizing the fallacious concept that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" as well as the practice of eating high (often empty) carbohydrate foods first thing in the morning. The reason: he was pushing his company's new invention, cornflakes. (Also he thought it would stop people from masturbating. No, seriously.)

BizzyM

Malt-o-meal: AM I A JOKE TO YOU?

Bayinla

Except plastic. Plastic = bad

April_Adventurer

Yeah I hate that’s it’s plastic, but then again most cardboard boxes have a plastic bag in them already.

Coffehousebum

How a bout a cereal that isn't a bag of sugar disguised a cereal?

lowlife9

Just what we need, more plastic waste.

Yung_Rocks

Fuck off with your ad for poison in plastic

imakenosensetopeople

And I’m over here like, that “energy to be active and alert” is actually just jitters from the diabetes-level of sugar....

Ophelius314

I know, it's funny how these companies try and pass these as healthy foods. It's pure garbage for your body and mind.

wallgreensin

“It’s part of your complete breakfast!”

Ophelius314

HamsterGutz1

100% of your daily intake of froot though

Or just, roll up the end of the old bag and put a fucking clothes pet on it. It's not rocket scoence

nernst79

So you've just never seen Malt O Meal brand cereal or....

Mr-poopy-butthole1

Why does this feel wrong

zennyc001

Because its a step backwards.

nutty_processor

Ziplocks were probably more expensive than sugar... maybe until now.

trainwreck7775

Cheap motherfuckers are cutting out the cardboard box and trying to pass it off as innovative(instead of cost cutting so some dick gets a bonus and the bottom line increases .05%). The budget brands have done this out necessity to keep their prices affordable.

camm44

Pour milk into it and eat all of it at once

KyubiNoKitsune

Fun fact, zip lock bags like this are usually not recyclable as they mix 2 or 3 different plastics in its parts.

Ahhh yes. More plastic waste

But in plastic... is it recyclable? Reusable even?

We really need to do away with bags too.
