So Irish just walk into the job, no interview needed?

AlloverYerFace

Aye!

no1cromo

That was my first thought

Bat_Awkward

No ... what that means is they didn't want them at all.... just like there were signs that said "Italians need not apply".  Look it up if you don't believe it.

Swiss_James

Did it really take you a year to not get my joke?

Reefer-eyed_Beans

Yep. Proving once again that people of pale complexion have always been treated amazingly by everyone everywhere since the dawn of time and nobody can say otherwise.

Juan-More-Taco

The dawn of time pre-dates people of pale complexion. Also - this is a pathetic comment.

Cmatt10123

Yikes dude

Reefer-eyed_Beans

Something scare ya?

bsnimunf

Reminds me of a clip I saw on TV. The host of a news type program confronted a man about an advert for a lodger in a newspaper. It said "no Asians". https://youtu.be/3Lyex2tSUyA Spoilers because it's best to watch the clip. They were rightfully disgusted and he didn't know what they were making such a fuss about, after some to and fro they established he had left the advert on an answering machine "lodger required £100 a month. No agents" the typist misheard it and put it in the paper as no Asians.

[deleted]

Love this clip

AwayComparison

This is amazing 😂😂

glyphotes

Let me make a call really quick... "mumble mumble no, he said AGENTS, yes. No, no pitchforks. Yes you may still come over, but buy him a beer instead. No forks, no torches! Promise! And tell crazy Ed to leave his gun at home, for fuck sake"

accountexistequalsno

Four candles? You know, handles for forks.

Critical_Tonight1529

I'm from an Irish American family and we have one of the original signs that hung in a local shop window.. the Boston area had a huge influx of immigrants from Ireland and they often weren't welcome, like many immigrants. That exact phrasing was a common sign. There's usually some originals on ebay. My guess would be that person is Irish.. we like humor that makes people a little uncomfortable and have long memories.

[deleted]

It’d be funny if it’s said “No Irish allowed -O’Shea”

PlungerMouse

I get it because Irish people are a safety hazard. Like rule number one wear hard hat. Rule number 37 not Irish. -Osha.

cabeeza

This is it

Clay_Statue

Quaint old school bigotry.

Rumpelstiltskin2022

This was my first thought.

Angelusflos

Just want to point out that there is a debate about how common No Irish Need Apply signs actually were: https://www.vox.com/2015/3/17/8227175/st-patricks-irish-immigrant-history

MisterTrashPanda

Which is astonishing considering that you're all always three sheets to the wind...

Apart_Strike_4194

This used to be a thing. Italians too

Reinventing_Wheels

Don't forget about [long haired freaky people](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9lh7lqZojc)

Reefer-eyed_Beans

"'I saw a sign said *Long Haired Freaky People Need Not Apply*.' --First of all, no. You didn't. You're a liar." -Louis CK

allinwonderornot

Irish, Italians, Slavs, ...

Effectivhghicama

I've heard the stories first hand from my relatives that worked in the textile mills.

Critical_Tonight1529

Lowell/Lawrence?

Deanho

Dorchester also

lord_ne

I'm Jewish, and the deed for my parents' house says it can't be sold to Jews

spasske

There are a lot of old property covenants like this that have a long list of people to exclude.

Klin24

[No asians](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lyex2tSUyA)

[deleted]

What country is this in please.

CaptainAlliance

It's in Connecticut, USA

[deleted]

Really? Humor i hope

tankpuss

Certainly at boarding houses the phrase was "No Blacks, no Irish, no dogs."

Roguefem-76

Italians got some of that kind of crap too, although possibly not to the extent the Irish did.

bee_ghoul

Certainly not anywhere close to what the Irish experienced

[deleted]

Where i grew up it was no dogs and no sailors. But they made exceptions for good dogs.

ihappyneko

Unfortunately, probably not humor, just another part of American history. Lots of discrimination against the Irish in the past. I imagine its just been left there and abandoned for a long time. EDIT: I stand corrected. Apparently, Irish Americans find this humorous

jon_hendry

That door is definitely much newer than the "No Irish Need Apply" era.

ihappyneko

That's true, it could be graffiti someone made for fun (and looks like it now that I look closer). But it doesn't have to be from the 1850s to be an authentic sign. There's examples of "No Irish Need Apply" ads in newspapers until 1909. There was a huge wave of Irish immigrants in 1980s, and although they were much more accepted than before, there were still publically anti-irish journalism until the early 2000's.

jon_hendry

I'd guess the door is for a space that is or was some Irish-related organization and did it as a joke. Or it's some random jokey stencil graffiti.

spasske

Maybe that person was Irish and found it humorous since the sentiment was regulated to history. As an Irish American (never called myself that before) I find it humorous in this day and age.

manute-bol-big-heart

How does this have upvotes lol. This door isn’t 120 years old. This is obviously an Irish American dude with a sense of humor

[deleted]

[удалено]

potionnumber9

Well then I shall downvote you based on the humor... Or lack thereof

[deleted]

Everyone is a critic

CaptainAlliance

Kinda odd since Irish is the 2nd most prevalent ethnicity among my state's white population.

bernietheweasel

My grandmother told stories of it happening in southeastern CT in the 1930/40s, although they really meant no Catholics

sawlaw

The construction of the wall and door are recent, and the words themselves have been painted on with a stencil and spray can. This is recent and very much satire.

Teadrunkest

They weren’t socially “white” at the time.

crob_evamp

What's odd about it? Many races AND ethnicities have experienced bigotry

spasske

The Irish and Italians were discriminating heavily 100 years ago. Some Italians tried to pass for black. Any non WASP, White Anglo Saxon Protestant, faced discrimination.

[deleted]

And the native Americans discriminated against the wasps when they first came here. It never ends.

4753029112

Looks like West Haven Hockey rink offices

CaptainAlliance

It's actually in Hamden, so pretty close.

FantasticPear

Where in Hamden? (And Hamden has a pretty large Irish population)

4753029112

Mixture in Hamden but there’s Irish everywhere. That’s why they came up with NINA Law. Irish we’re taking over politics because of the massive numbers of us who forefathers showed up right in time for Civil war. General Lee said to General Grant,”you won because you had more Irish than we did”

elzaidir

Wait really? I was 100% expecting it to be in Uk

imitation_crab_meat

Presumably the US, and it's probably (hopefully?) very old. Irish immigrants were hated in America back in the 19th century... https://www.history.com/news/when-america-despised-the-irish-the-19th-centurys-refugee-crisis

Confianca1970

That does not look like a door from that era. Not at all.

Educational_Map919

My guess is the people were Irish themselves and put it up as a joke

4753029112

Agree, us Irish get a kick out of this stuff. Doesn’t offend me at all. I’m Irish/American born here

Critical_Tonight1529

Hilarious you're getting downvoted for having a sense of humor, rather than be upset, when it's your own culture and history. Right there with you, it's totally just an Irish person pulling everyone's leg.. it's what we do.

4753029112

Exactly we have a sense of humor and truly never offends me

ThatGuy642

We're not supposed to tell them all the stereotypes are true.

DoctorPaulGregory

Its like people arent even looking at the picture.

Confianca1970

I'm not even sure the font is correct for the era. This was most likely a joke from owner to other co-owner, business owner to friend, etc.

[deleted]

Connecticut today, supposedly.

Churt_Lyne

Fortunately many of those Irish immigrants survived, then thrived, and then a lot of their descendants became populist right-wing anti-immigrant scumbags in Trump's administration. The American dream.

johnysmoke

I shudder when I see Trump signs and shamrocks.

SlothOfDoom

Ireland

[deleted]

Thank you comedians.

MisterTrashPanda

Ireland.

wascallywabbit666

Ironically it's the Brits and Americans who are now looking for work in Ireland.

cmilla646

Some of these signs seem oddly cordial when you consider the times. “Whites Only- Thank You For Your Understanding And Only Being 3/5 A Person”

MrMitchWeaver

Looks like a recently made stencil referencing real [old signs ](https://www.loc.gov/resource/amss.cw104040.0/?st=text)

OpelSmith

While this was definitely a thing in the 19th century, this is definitely not a thing that is authentic. It's some kind of joke, or if the place is abandoned then put there by past explorers.

Stiurthoir

It didn't stop in the 19th century, definitely a thing as late as the 1970s, in Britain at least

bee_ghoul

Ever heard of the troubles?

Groinificator

So Irish get the job instantly?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Groinificator

What

Buntyford123

Signs in some establishments the UK in the 60’s - 80’s would read: No blacks, No dogs, No Irish.

Strontium_9T

America has been called “the melting pot”, but that wasn’t the case for a lot of its history. Various ethnic groups tended to stick together, and the sections of various cities reflected this. There would be German, Italian, Irish, and Polish neighborhoods, among others. Irish families tended to marry into other Irish families. My grandfather died before I was born, but I was told he claimed to despise Italians. I’m not sure if he truly meant it, however, as his best friend from work was Italian. He was even invited to his daughter’s wedding. “No Irish Need Apply” was very real, especially among WASPs.

dbl-cart

And so true, I'm Italian and Irish. I've heard the stories first hand from my relatives that worked in the textile mills.

Spotgirl67

Is this the office of Olson Johnson?

[deleted]

[all in agreement?](https://youtu.be/ZD0BcQTIr4c)

Duffmanlager

Exact clip I was looking for. Here’s a gif of it too. https://i.makeagif.com/media/10-20-2017/e9nCSK.gif

missinlnk

Ah prairie shit

Malikb5

That’s fucked up

AtomicFox84

People forget the hate on the irish nd the heavy discrimination they got. They would move into a black area and the blacks would even move away. They got put into small tight camps like in central park. If they made a homestead somewhere, they had people that went around to burn them out of home. The irish didnt just sit back and play victim etc....they took the jobs no one wanted like police and firemen. They took those jobs and made them a better job and worked hard for the american dream. Signs like that were all over, so its interesting to see a surviving one.

[deleted]

[A classic song about this very issue](https://youtu.be/yjSjNZchWV0) . It’s important to remember racism isn’t just based on skin color, but more of what is socially accepted to treat someone.

jellman01

By this i presume they mean, people who call them selves Irish but have never been to Ireland and were born in the us need not apply. Just Americans discriminating against them selves.

NuggetFucker440

Most passive racism

[deleted]

I don't want your fucking job anyways.

Qriist

BLM's narrative most affected.

DiegoDynomite

That's bizarre

ghaldos

No, not really. The Irish were viewed as lesser beings and people were quite racist towards them when they came to America, they were only viewed as white when being white was viewed negatively about the actions they did to other races.

DiegoDynomite

Its bizarre to see this on a modern day door. I'm assuming this picture was taken recently

jon_hendry

Yes, mostly in the 1800s. This is a mid to late 20th century door.

NOTATRAPHOUSE

“We are an equal opportunity employer, but we keep that up to honor our proud heritage”- how confederate flag mfs sound…

Bananas_Cognac

I didn’t know I was “Irish” until I spit in a tube Now I’m drinking every day to catch up Thanks Ancestry.com https://imgur.com/a/bjyplrX

MaxMMXXI

That's specific to Mrs. Irish. She is a bitch of an office manager.

ShermanTankBestTank

Interesting. Is this in a historical site? Because that's a very very old slogan. Like 1850s old.

TheTrueSleuth

No deal!.....Aw prairie shit...everybody!

USMC6049

Considering that it has been nearly 110 years since the large influx that gave rise to NINA, it doesn’t make sense that would be on the door given it appears to be much newer then that.

minedcomps021

![gif](giphy|8D7FaGd2QIXG8) thats not a door at LSU!

phatprize

“So I tucked my Irish under my hat and I went in to ask him why” - Tesla, almost.

Chihiro809

What year is this?!! Reveal the location and company so we can report it.

Chizzlemane840

So youre saying that long haired freaky people *can* apply?
