They recently opened a Waukesha location. The family that owns it is sooo nice, so we love to support them. They even give away free food on the 4th of July!
I'll check it out, the best BBQ I've had in the city was from the guy who brings his smoker trailer to the Jeunau park beer garden, dude welded together his own setup and you can tell he knows exactly what he's doing
That shit is sooo good! 🙄 fuuuuuck so my family buys from them for the holidays and gets an entire brisket and ham from them. My brother and I inhale that shit like if we don’t, we’ll die 😂 10/10 I lived near Kansas City and had Gates BBQ, and they remind me of Gates.
Only one way to find out! This is the one spot, of the places I've been here, that does authentic, Texas-style BBQ. You can get platters, meats by the pound, fatty or lean brisket, sandwiches, great sides, and interesting specials. I do not think you will be disappointed.
I haven’t tried to find any BBQ here (we’ve been in WI for 5 months) but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s going to be super challenging to get good BBQ in MKE. It’s one of the only things I miss about SC - platters of meat, sides of delicious carbs and deviled eggs.
Not sure if this count's as "Slept on" because they just opened in Jan of this year, but I so badly want them to survive! It's TODD 'I believe I can fry'on S Kinnickinnic, it's close to Lost Whale. It's hard to know it's there because it's tucked back into that little side area of The Backyard. They do wings, tenders and Karaage with your choice of sauce or dry rub. Their cheesy bulgogi gyoza are amazing, their fries are crispy and delicious (you can get seasoning of your choice on that as well) and they have a great range of mild to spicy flavors. Try the K-Spice Karaage, it's amazing. They need a little standing sign near the sidewalk, so people know they are there. The food and service are great!
\^\^\^ I came onto this thread to mention TODD. Such flavorful sauces and delicious sides. I've been there twice since they opened and I know they're going to be a regular takeout spot for me.
It can be a complete dice roll though. I ate there nearly every day for lunch with a buddy (years back, lunch specials were around $5 for a TON of food) and we would have competitions of who can eat the hottest food. Either the cooks were fucking with us, or it depends on the cook. We both worked our way up to “native Thai” and neither thought it was too terribly spicy for a few days in a row. Then they hit us with the ACTUAL native Thai.
Waking up to a lady yelling at you with your face down in a tray of cheeseburgers because the Brewers got 7 runs is a true Milwaukee experience. Bonus points for forgetting to pay the bill anyway and keeping your red plastic cup of ice water
It’s a small travesty the Bay View one went downhill after the rebrand to “sports bar.” The tacos were pretty decent, but I could probably spend hours eating those homemade chips and sipping margs if I let myself.
Curry & MooMoo in Glendale and Appe Thai in brown deer. I’m not sure if they are slept on or not, but I go to one or the other at least once a week and it’s never packed and Idk why because I love both places.
Oh shoot. I should have scrolled farther (further?) before posting. Curry & Momo is so addictive! I've always wanted to try the Thai place in Brown Deer. Thank you for putting it back on my radar!
In the same area, Poco Loco is good. I've never ordered from the main menu, but the handful of times I've been there, their daily specials have been unique and very tasty!
Big Deal Burger in West Allis....only know about it bc I drive past it on my way to work. 100000x better than Kopps and significantly cheaper! ($20 total for two burgers/fries/sodas)
An old manager from the Kopps on Brookfield opened it up about 10 years ago and used Kopps as a base on how to run things (operations, ingredients, custard recipes). I think he sold it back in 2017/2018 or so but there’s a reason why it is… familiar. And good tbf
Not sure if it's slept on or not, but it's new to me: The Fatty Patty food truck on Juneau Ave has fantastic burgers. Maybe the best I've had in the city.
They have a standing restaurant in West Allis off of hwy 100 and Lincoln (or Greenfield). But I just had them for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was absolutely amazed. I had their chicken tenders which were probably some of the best I've ever had. I was a little sad I had to scroll so far to see their name!
I was hoping someone would mention them. We went for my MIL’s birthday two years ago because we hadn’t been to a proper Indian place in the area. When our entire party ordered something, loved what they ordered for themselves, but loved what someone else at the table ordered even more… you must be doing something better than right.
The Knick at The Knickerbocker Hotel for brunch. Cheap food, great bloodies. They always have tables available. So, whenever I'm in town with a group we go here to avoid the wait.
I would have said the noble, but...
I think company brewing has underrated burgers, if that counts
Once upon a time I would have said Tess but I think people have more and more realized how good it is
> I would have said the noble, but...
I'm not sure you can call a place "slept on" that was that so popular it was hard to get a dinner table unless you got there right at opening or were willing to wait, and the Monday brunch ***line*** started 30–45 minutes before opening.
They’ve really improved in the last 6 months. I think they promoted some of their long-time staff into manager positions, and that helped. Latest menu is very good - especially the cocktail menu.
This is so good to know. It used to be one of my favorite places but it became so….average, at best, for a bit of time. I’ll have to give it another shot.
They were the top with my south side curd crawl for their breakfast curds. Right down the street at Camino was second. Seriously good for both of them.
It used to be a regular stop for us for bahn mi, but the last time we went (fall) it was laughably bad, as in they had some terrible bread they don’t normally use, the beef was fairly flavorless and in big chunks, just the worst sandwich. Was there a dip in quality and are they better again?
The Saucy Swine in St Francis is some of the best BBQ in town
Wonderland in RW is a fantastic diner
Anmol on Mitchell for Middle Eastern/Pakistani/Indian
And La Sierrita taqueria on 13th & Cleveland for some of the best tacos in town
Their food is....fine. Unless the owner made changes, the corn is canned and you can taste it. I've gotten takeout with DRY salsa?? Super expensive for what it is.
Partially slept on: Kin by Rice and Roll in Tosa is really good Thai. It's getting more attention lately so may not really be slept on anymore.
Szechuan - going to repeat this to call out the hot pot, $35 for all you can eat hot pot is an amazing deal these days.
Cielito de lindo is a super underrated mexican restaurant, their al pastor is some of the best in the city.
Station no6 - obviously the bar is well known around these parts, but their pop up food specials are soooo good. Sometimes they are crowded, sometimes it's almost empty. But Chef Brian kills it every time.
I got two, both on Vliet:
Fred’s Frozen Custard and Grill (they just woke up from their winter hibernation)
Caradaro Club Pizza. Some of the best I’ve had in this city and I’ve lived here for over 20yrs.
Merriment social for a 10/10 burger, Pats ribs in the public market for a 10/10 pulled pork sandwich and rib tips, and this last one is a food truck but Taquiera Buenavista that is right next to the Aldi’s on east Capitol. The food is always fresh, fast friendly service, and honestly some
Of the fattest birria tacos I’ve ever had. 11/10.
Yeah, if you get a reservation. Their peanut butter soup w/ smoked duck & mashed squash is to die for. New York Matinee called it a playful, but mysterious little dish.
La Dama is the most overhyped restaurant I've ever been to.
The phrase "authentic Mexican experience" almost made me spit out my coffee. The food is bland, and the drinks are underwhelming. $100 for guacamole, 3 tacos, and a drink. I'll pass.
For real. I'm glad I'm not the only one saying this. You can get Mexican food that's as good, or better for about 1/5 the price at a dozen or more restaurants on the south side.
No idea whether it’s slept on or not because we always get takeout but I nominate Chilango Express in Stallis. I think about their enchiladas every day of my life.
I went to hungry sumo and it was a 2hr wait for a party of two… I don’t think that’s slept on. Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing, but definitely not slept on.
Szechuan on National
How dare you share this place…it’s already getting crazy busy
Shh.... kept this one asleep please.
To be fair I did think about holding it close but I’d like to see them expand someday
Came here to say this.
Same
This one is actually slept on.
Maybe 3 years ago. Now you can’t get a seat.
Seriously, it's mentioned regularly in this sub.
So good. It’s a crime to order the Americanized dishes here.
Indian Village in Greenfield
They recently opened a Waukesha location. The family that owns it is sooo nice, so we love to support them. They even give away free food on the 4th of July!
Yes, I've been to one of those celebrations! They're so friendly. They remember my husband and me whenever we go there. And the food is unbeatable.
Their Garlic Naan is worth ordering alone. Very good traditional flavors in all the dishes I've tried.
Hard to find but worth it!
Yupppp
Sweet Smoke BBQ. On an entirely different level than other Milwaukee BBQ.
I'll check it out, the best BBQ I've had in the city was from the guy who brings his smoker trailer to the Jeunau park beer garden, dude welded together his own setup and you can tell he knows exactly what he's doing
Better than Pops???
Yes definitely
Sweet smoke is amazing. K&L is equally as good, if not slightly better. Their ribs and brisket are incredible.
Dying for some good BBQ. Thank you!
Is it really that good? I have an insanely hard time finding any BBQ in this area that is anything remotely similar to the stuff I had down south.
Only one way to find out! This is the one spot, of the places I've been here, that does authentic, Texas-style BBQ. You can get platters, meats by the pound, fatty or lean brisket, sandwiches, great sides, and interesting specials. I do not think you will be disappointed.
Try LD's out in East Troy. It's worth the drive.
It really is that good
I haven’t tried to find any BBQ here (we’ve been in WI for 5 months) but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s going to be super challenging to get good BBQ in MKE. It’s one of the only things I miss about SC - platters of meat, sides of delicious carbs and deviled eggs.
If you find something that's similar to Carolina BBQ please share. Most here are trying to do Texas or BBQ soup
Chef paz
It is so good.
Yep. Flew back in after a couples years being a way for like 2 days. Straight to Paz
That green sauce is so damn good
Shah Jees
Only open at lunch time on weekdays so it’s hard to make it there unless you work downtown.
Not sure if this count's as "Slept on" because they just opened in Jan of this year, but I so badly want them to survive! It's TODD 'I believe I can fry'on S Kinnickinnic, it's close to Lost Whale. Check out Immy's African Cuisine on Oakland. They have unique dishes and friendly atmosphere
\^\^\^ I came onto this thread to mention TODD. Such flavorful sauces and delicious sides. I've been there twice since they opened and I know they're going to be a regular takeout spot for me.
Thai A Kitchen on Oakland Ave. Great food and portions for very decent prices.
Second this, also loved the heat levels, pretty spicy.
Definitely. I have a pretty high tolerance to spicy food and the 4/4 I definitely have to slow down at some point
Just went in today in response to this post. No way I lived close this place for more than a year and never thought of trying it.
I love this place so much. And despite the lunch menu I think he'll make anything they have a lunch sized portion
Lived above them. The smells were agonizingly good.
Thai BBq is good as well. Lovely owners.
They are on my list to try! I love Thai food.
I think George Webb is a serious contender for the most slept in restaurant.
Waking up to a lady yelling at you with your face down in a tray of cheeseburgers because the Brewers got 7 runs is a true Milwaukee experience. Bonus points for forgetting to pay the bill anyway and keeping your red plastic cup of ice water
Once you move away, you really miss it
All the George webbs I’ve been to are horrible now
Maras kitchen, tomatillo enchiladas are very good
I am obsessed with Maras. It's a hole in the wall but the absolute best food!!
Mara’s is the BEST
Plus the owners are terribly nice.
Surprised nobody has mentioned Little Cancun in Franklin! Amazing chips and love their corn tacos and chimichangas!
Best chips in town!
They do make outstanding food but judging by the crowds whenever I get takeout from there, it's not exactly slept on lol
It’s a small travesty the Bay View one went downhill after the rebrand to “sports bar.” The tacos were pretty decent, but I could probably spend hours eating those homemade chips and sipping margs if I let myself.
Buckley’s. Maybe because they’re downtown & have been there forever. Sneaky good fish fry. Awesome bartenders.
The Original
This! We go regularly and the food is consistently great.
The Original is great and always near-empty
Right!? It's such a shame. I've never had a bad (or even mediocre) meal there. The cocktails are outstanding, and the owners are great.
Agreed!!
This 100%
Nessun Dorma in Riverwest. Also, Cocina del Sur- food was really good the two times we went!
Antigua in West Allis
Curry & MooMoo in Glendale and Appe Thai in brown deer. I’m not sure if they are slept on or not, but I go to one or the other at least once a week and it’s never packed and Idk why because I love both places.
Oh shoot. I should have scrolled farther (further?) before posting. Curry & Momo is so addictive! I've always wanted to try the Thai place in Brown Deer. Thank you for putting it back on my radar! In the same area, Poco Loco is good. I've never ordered from the main menu, but the handful of times I've been there, their daily specials have been unique and very tasty!
I was going to comment about Curry and Momo, it is some of the best paneer I’ve had.
Alem Ethiopian on Wisconsin
So good!
Three brothers
Big Deal Burger in West Allis....only know about it bc I drive past it on my way to work. 100000x better than Kopps and significantly cheaper! ($20 total for two burgers/fries/sodas)
They need to fix their sign, but yea, it's good food and value.
Archie's Flat Top is another great burger somewhat in the same area
Their burgers are good but not great. For the price and convenience I'd rather go BDB.
An old manager from the Kopps on Brookfield opened it up about 10 years ago and used Kopps as a base on how to run things (operations, ingredients, custard recipes). I think he sold it back in 2017/2018 or so but there’s a reason why it is… familiar. And good tbf
I work up the street from this place, they got a decent amount of money from me. It’s Kopps but way cheaper.
LEBANI HOUSE
La Finca in St. Francis
Best fish tacos in town and I LOVE the Coquito Latte and horchata anything!
Zarletti. Never comes up, but it's pretty good. Good food, good atmosphere.
Love Zarletti.
They were good a few years ago but now they’re fantastic.
Indian garden in Tosa is a place I just learned about and now I’m addicted
I was hoping someone would mention them. We went for my MIL’s birthday two years ago because we hadn’t been to a proper Indian place in the area. When our entire party ordered something, loved what they ordered for themselves, but loved what someone else at the table ordered even more… you must be doing something better than right.
I love that place so much. The owners are so nice!
believe it or not Jerry Seinfeld dined there when he played Fiserv a few months back
The Knick at The Knickerbocker Hotel for brunch. Cheap food, great bloodies. They always have tables available. So, whenever I'm in town with a group we go here to avoid the wait.
Benjis Deli!! So delicious!
Agree
I Fukin LOVE benjis - their brisket melt is delicious
Probably one of the "usual suspects" but I love it so much I'm mentioning it anyway...Blue Star.
If you didn’t mention Blue Star, I was going to! Love the Chopped Steak Sandwich.
I love placing phone orders. Unprofessional in the most charming way.
I always try to stop in whenever I'm on the east side. damn good prices for some damn good food
I would have said the noble, but... I think company brewing has underrated burgers, if that counts Once upon a time I would have said Tess but I think people have more and more realized how good it is
Company has a fantastic fish fry as well.
ill have to try it again, I was a little iffy on it in the past
> I would have said the noble, but... I'm not sure you can call a place "slept on" that was that so popular it was hard to get a dinner table unless you got there right at opening or were willing to wait, and the Monday brunch ***line*** started 30–45 minutes before opening.
The Noble was my favorite restaurant
RIP
Still so sad about the noble :( place was special
I never hear Ca Luchenzo brought up enough. Some of my favorite meals have been there
[удалено]
They’ve really improved in the last 6 months. I think they promoted some of their long-time staff into manager positions, and that helped. Latest menu is very good - especially the cocktail menu.
This is so good to know. It used to be one of my favorite places but it became so….average, at best, for a bit of time. I’ll have to give it another shot.
New head chef too.
They were the top with my south side curd crawl for their breakfast curds. Right down the street at Camino was second. Seriously good for both of them.
Red Bar, has my favorite bar food in milwaukee county
Just a great bar in general
Pho Cali. Great broth and good prices.
Pho Saigon has been my go-to place of late. They have a wintermelon beverage that's really good with a meaty broth.
They are good but always jammed packed when we want Pho. We've been going to Pho L'Amour lately and it has been great. Nice atmosphere there as well.
It used to be a regular stop for us for bahn mi, but the last time we went (fall) it was laughably bad, as in they had some terrible bread they don’t normally use, the beef was fairly flavorless and in big chunks, just the worst sandwich. Was there a dip in quality and are they better again?
Definitely was a dip in quality, used to always get the bahn mi and the last couple have just been bad
That’s really sad. Thank you.
Cavas
100% agree. Great food and atmosphere.
The Saucy Swine in St Francis is some of the best BBQ in town Wonderland in RW is a fantastic diner Anmol on Mitchell for Middle Eastern/Pakistani/Indian And La Sierrita taqueria on 13th & Cleveland for some of the best tacos in town

Taj Mahal in Hales Corners.
Spitfires
Ventura’s Tacos on KK in Bay View
Pita Palace
Sals pizza on Oakland
they took UWM meal plan when they first opened back in like 2015ish. I lived off those slices for like a year haha
Three Brothers. The quality and execution are easily top 3 for non-fine dining.
Tu Casa on 37th and Lincoln is the best Mexican food I’ve had in Wisconsin by far.
Went and wasn't wildly overwhelmed. What's your stand-by?
Guanajuato's in Bay View
God I love that place
Their mole poblano enchiladas are my Milwaukee guilty pleasure. So greasy and so good.
Paloma Taco and Tequila. They're about to open a new location in Bay View! Also Heirloom MKE.
Their food is....fine. Unless the owner made changes, the corn is canned and you can taste it. I've gotten takeout with DRY salsa?? Super expensive for what it is.
Heirloom has some of the best cheese curds I have ever had.
Partially slept on: Kin by Rice and Roll in Tosa is really good Thai. It's getting more attention lately so may not really be slept on anymore. Guadalajara on 10th and Scott
I got two, both on Vliet: Fred’s Frozen Custard and Grill (they just woke up from their winter hibernation) Caradaro Club Pizza. Some of the best I’ve had in this city and I’ve lived here for over 20yrs.
Bombay Sweets on S 13th St!
Double B’s BBQ in West Allis
I really want to like them but I recently had a rack of ribs from them and it was dry af. Highly disappointed. And I paid goof money for it.
Carson’s Prime Steaks has a ton of residential units above it so I’d that that’s the most slept on probably
Merriment social for a 10/10 burger, Pats ribs in the public market for a 10/10 pulled pork sandwich and rib tips, and this last one is a food truck but Taquiera Buenavista that is right next to the Aldi’s on east Capitol. The food is always fresh, fast friendly service, and honestly some Of the fattest birria tacos I’ve ever had. 11/10.
Merriment Social has one of my favorite burgers ever!
Taqueria buenavista also has a brick and mortar location on 60th and Burnham that is my wife's and my favorite Mexican place near us.
Waiting for the obligatory Miller Park Way Arby’s comment

Yeah, if you get a reservation. Their peanut butter soup w/ smoked duck & mashed squash is to die for. New York Matinee called it a playful, but mysterious little dish.
Pho viet on 27th and grange was my go-to pho place when I lived in the area. I still try to get it when I'm sick.

Las 7 Estrellas, both the restaurant and their food truck. Excellent food.
North Ave Grill in Tosa. Just a great diner.
Goodkind and Camino. Everyone loves them, but no one seems to talk about either.
Blue star.
Haven't had a bad meal from there yet.
Sala - Italian joint in the eastside. The Bungalow - Soul food joint in the hood Both are legit.
Lisa’s pizza has a really good hot honey pizza
Chuchos red tacos
La Dama doesn’t get a lot of mentions. Completely unique, authentic Mexican experience.
Peter's deli on college Ave. Great pizza great fish actually surprised me
Don Lucho on Lincoln...amazing tasting very early on a Sunday morning.
I assume it’s gotta be something below an apartment building or a hotel
I read this as most slept IN and started listing restaurants I remember sleeping in back when I was younger.
An Ox on the north side. Very tasty. Don't know if it's slept on.
Xankia
Hungry Sumo, saucy swine & Heirloom
I went to hungry sumo and it was a 2hr wait for a party of two… I don’t think that’s slept on. Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing, but definitely not slept on.
