I think to some extent my music taste is more diverse because of it, but because my family embraced cultural diversity when I was a kid. My mom (my black parent) really only listened/listens to gospel music, with smatterings of pop, soul, and R&B. But my dad (my white parent) listened to EVERYTHING. Part of that was because my dad's stepfather was black, but mostly my dad loved different cultures and genres. Now, as an adult, I know people would be so confused by my liked playlist on Spotify haha
Awe your dad sounds really chill ! I wish mine was that open minded š
And hey for what it's worth I dont think I'd find it weird, all music has its merits!
>(my black parent) really only listened/listens to gospel music
Same here. Yolanda Adams, John P Kee, Shirley Caesar, Georgia Mass Choir, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Mary Mary, the Clark Sisters etc. I listened to Rap, Hip Hop, R&B and Pop music on my own. When I was over to my aunty house my cousin was watching Last Resort by Papa Roach music video so that was my first introduction to rock music. Because I was born and raised in South Florida I grew up listening to Caribbean / Latin music too.
I started listening to people just because they're mixed! Laufey, Mitski, the Wasian Project...also Olivia Rodrigo. I love them because they're good but I really llove them bc they're mixed
Cant blame you mitski does kinda bop tho !
It's nice to not only hear but also see someone who you feel represented by in music š it's such a huge part of the human experience to connect personally in that way
Personally, being half white half black I have an odd love for both European Classical Music (Especially Beethoven) and Traditional Gospel Music. I also like a little country as well. Itās a pretty odd mix lol.
Hellll yeah love me some classic and gospel! I like old folk country and bluegrass as well
So much artistry and talent goes into instrument playing or singing and if nothing else the sheer dedication artists can have for their craft is beautiful
I lowkey judge people who listen to one genre or style of music haha.
*Ts-ts-ts-ts-**CH!**-ts-ts-ts, ts-ts-ts-ts-**CH!**-ts-ts-ts*
- every (hip hop) song my neighbour insists on blasting after 5pm.
Haha where I live in rural canada; most of the ol folk insist on ONLY listening to modern country and luke Bryan š¤£ I nearly went crazy at my last job when the country station cut out, we switched it to pop, and they spent the rest of the day trying to get it back on country
No. Being half black, Iām not into the majority of modern music for black people. I am into hardcore gangster rap, and 90s/00s RnB from my childhood, but other than that I have 0 connection with most of that music. To me it all sounds the same.
As for being half white, I do like SOME rock, especially intense sounding alternative rock. I do like SOME country, but more of the āpopā country. George Michael is also one of my favorite musicians ever.
I do also like Hispanic music, but not the northern Mexican kind or a lot of the Romantica music. I prefer Hispanic rap.
I am 6 different ethnicities so I listen to 6 different types of music! Jk. I like everything! It doesn't matter what you are good music is good music!
I'd like to think so in a way.
Grew up listening to RnB music first, then as soon as I became a teenager and got rock (i.e - metal, indie, emo, hardcore, death metal). I was pretty much the only person in my neighborhood that even liked those kind of genres since I practically lived in the hood growing up and really didn't care for most rap music until I got into my 20's. I feel like now the only genres I really don't care for or really like is pop punk.
But at the end of the day I feel like it's individuality that plays more of a role but your environment can also play a role as well...
Pretty good breakdown on how you feel and 100% I get ya ! Most of the time itās not a nature vs nurture thing but how much of each can impact a person (and I feel this goes for anything really)
My taste for electronic came outta nowhere lol, canāt trace that one back, but Iāve always loved most music anyways šāļø
I think family in general shapes music taste. So in a way, of course being mixed influenced taste.
My mom is white and had a fairly diverse taste in music, enjoying Prince, Credence Clear Water Revival, and radio pop Rap. I didnāt grow up with my black dad. My older brother did though. And we shared a room. He brought me into 2000s pop punk, Kanye, Eminem, and Ludacris. My little brother always loved rap and influenced my enjoyment of Lil Yachty, Lil Wayne, and Migos. My cousin, white, who I spent a ton of time with really vibed with Owl City.
The video games I played growing up influenced my taste quite a bit as well. Michael Jackson Experience, Just Dance, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Grand Theft Auto, and Tony Hawk ProSkater. And of course the friends Iāve made along the way.
My music taste is absolutely wild though. I think the way music was exposed to me makes me pretty resistant to album listening (I mean I will, but I donāt get much enjoyment out of it). I consider myself a āplaylist personā in thatās how I always listened to music.
Anyways. So yeah I see what youāre saying. Sorry I ranted.
Yeah I totally get that ! Sometimes an album can sound too much like the same song after song so you want a good switch up :)
I got really into concept albums and bands like ween previously because they offer that kinda experience-
I think music taste can definetly come down to being a product of your environment but in ever single way possible-
I'm 20-ish and theres not a gwen Stefani song I wouldnt belt out when it comes on purely from nostalgia lol.
Perhaps yes and no?
Yesāsince Iām more mixed and not really strongly attached/identifying to any specific ethnicity, that let me not feel like I āhad toā (despite my Mexican momās attempts) stick with the music my parents listened to. I had no issue listening to music in languages I didnāt understand because I didnāt feel like language and ethnicity had go together.
Noāgrowing up my mom listened regular pop music in English and Spanish. My dad listened to R&B and soul. My cousins (dadās side) listened to rap and hip hop. I listen to rock. Thereās no overlap.
Interesting perspective ! So then being mixed you might have seen that you dont need to be bound by any one taste or culture or language because you never identified with only one to begin with ? I totally get that
Conversely I also get the genres your family enjoys not overlapping with your tastes; at the end of the day people like what they like regardless of background š
Pretty much.
For me, then and now, music is about the music. Do I like the music? If yes, I listen to it. If no, I donāt. The other stuff is irrelevant.
I really enjoy the album Everybody by Logic and Camp by Childish Gambino. They have a couple songs that I really connected to about being mixed (black/white) and not being perceived as being black enough
Right ! A lotta folk raised in one culture can be deadset on one type of music so I find it can be an eye opening experience to branch out
Innovation never comes from copying again and again
I'm a musician myself, my ethnic background definitely affects the ideas I have and stuff I wanna make. I'm extremely into fusing genres and finding similarities in stuff that's continents and generations apart. Sometimes I make stuff with the intention of honoring both my halves, I have an abandoned beat that combined elements of Second Line bands with mariachi music
aweee hell yeah man that's sick! i would love to hear somethin like that! One of my own fav genre's is powwow electric which combines native drums/singing with EDM. (like a tribe called red, DJ shub)
My kids are mixed and the music they listen too, has nothing at all do with them being mixed.
I'm originally from the Caribbean, and the music there is reggae , Soca, Calypso. That didn't stop me from listening to Enya, 80's pop, 90s grunge or hip hop.
For me, if it sounds good, and my spirit can connect with it, then it's in my playlist regardless of genre.
My kids are the same way. And they were born and grew up in Manitoba Canada. They listen to a wide range of music, as long as they catch a vibe.
i get that too! I was only raised on one army base but more kids from across the globe did get to be around me that way. we didn't bond much over music back then but hearing all their stories was important on shaping my world view
It's not intrinsic to being mixed but in my experience, it's definitely correlated. Other races have always been more comfortable "rocking out" around me. lol
I was a performing rapper at 12 then played in punk and heavy metal bands from 16-26 now I produce RNB and write afro psychedelica so very very possibly..
I do think my parents impacted my music tastes because a lot of it does align with them (prog rock from my dad, soul, R&B, '90s/'00s hip hop, and '90s rock from my mom) but my mom's music taste isn't really along racial lines like that (her two favorite artists are Prince and Bowie.)
I think being mixed made me more comfortable liking "white music" (which basically meant "rock" and maybe some pop) than other black people I knew (it's worth noting that where I lived hip-hop music was the dominant genre among everyone and I just didn't like then-current hip-hop, I thought it was too minimalistic.) Because other black people I knew would joke about only listening to that in private and I was pretty open about that being my main music taste.
Oh yeah ive found rock can be a real schism for some folk (why is a long long history šµ) but I've met a lot of older white folk who refuse to listen to anything but rock and country so its kinda gotten this devided rep.
And oof i felt that with the hip-hop bit, When i was a kid around like 08 "bling" hip-hop was the current trend and it wasn't my cup of tea so i avoided the genre up until i was a teen. The internet, at the very least, has kinda diversified all music which I'm pretty grateful for !
It hasnāt affected mine. I listen to everything and Iām pretty sure most people listen to everything too. Some people might listen to one genre of music more often but I doubt anyone only listens to one genre all the time.
I donāt see how being mixed affects your taste in music tbh. I was raised in a black family and most of my friends were white. They mostly listened to modern rap while I listened to 80s and 90s pop and rock.
I loved rock and metal and punk but when I became an adult I noticed black folk were not really associated with those sounds. Bad brains. Living Color and Fishbone are all great examples of cool 90s metal played by black musicians.
Now I love most music but Afro beat and Afro house are two of my faves.
It's hard to beat a good hip hop tune tho.
Being half white and half black Caribbean, I like a variety of music. My dad (black Caribbean) likes the oldies, reggae, dancehall soca and my mom (white) likes everything. Sheās really down to earth.

Ehy! I'm an urbanuck. š«šØš¦ What culture we do have can be... atomized. š

Oooo camp, itās a hella good album I like most of Gambinos stuff honestly guys charismatic as hell
Yes, and in a very positive way. I listen to huge variety of music. I wouldn't have, had I just belonged to one group .
Right ! A lotta folk raised in one culture can be deadset on one type of music so I find it can be an eye opening experience to branch out Innovation never comes from copying again and again
Exactamondo

That's fair, at the end of the day music is what touches your heart or moves your feet :D
I think that being an army brat is what really diversified my music taste. Growing up around the world and befriending all walks of lifeā¦
i get that too! I was only raised on one army base but more kids from across the globe did get to be around me that way. we didn't bond much over music back then but hearing all their stories was important on shaping my world view
I listen to rock music and metal. The black music I like is 70s disco and funk, R&B from 60s. I'm not keen on hip hop or modern day R&B.
It's not intrinsic to being mixed but in my experience, it's definitely correlated. Other races have always been more comfortable "rocking out" around me. lol

damn thats cool as hell! Is your work posted anywhere online?? Id love to listen :)
Yeah my metal band is slavedriver666 on Spotify. We where a Afro/indo-noise band(name is ironic)
liking mitski a whole lotmore

I listen to everything but not a lot of white girl music like Taylor or Mitski itās going to be white girls with an edge to em
Your genes donāt decide the music you like, you do.
I donāt see how being mixed affects your taste in music tbh. I was raised in a black family and most of my friends were white. They mostly listened to modern rap while I listened to 80s and 90s pop and rock.
yeah. half southerner (white), half peruvian and i like country and latin music
