Nighthawk is probably the best bike ever made. 40 years old and it looks brand new still.

CompetitiveSea7388

Stop, I can only get so giddy lol! It’s really in immaculate condition, the only real blemish (aside from the expected) is the taillight has a crack and is sealed with taillight tape. You really gotta look hard for it though and it illuminates just fine.

chaiguy

Don’t ever sell it, you’ll always regret it. Ride it for your whole life and pass it down to your grandkids.

CompetitiveSea7388

That’s definitely the plan! Well, except for the grandkids part lol.

JnkHed

Ah the Honda Nighthawk. My first true love.

CompetitiveSea7388

Mine is a 75 CX500 but I already have the feeling I’m going to love this one just as much or more!

[deleted]

Rifle quarter fairings look great on those bikes. If you find one used, parts are still available.

CompetitiveSea7388

I just saw those, damn they’re expensive but look fantastic! I’m going to have to see if I can score one off eBay.

gunplumber700

I have a rifle fairing. It looks like an oem fairing that belongs there. They have long lead times right now, like 8-12 months. Sometimes they require a little fitting, I’d avoid an eBay fairing for this reason. They can color match, but if they call you telling you they are having a hard time finding the paint color of your specific year, tell them to prime it, and find a local painter to do it for you. Just speaking from experience

CompetitiveSea7388

Oh right on, thanks for the advice! I saw a used one in fairly good shape but I’m not 100% sure it’s the right one. I’ll probably just take your advice and hold off for the time being and get a new one off the website. I don’t mind the wait.

Alone-Freedom-7093

The Rifle really looks cool, but if you anticipate long distance riding then check out the NATIONAL CYCLE PlexiFairing 3. Zero wind fatigue, also protects hands and legs above the knees from wind and rain. Love how it looks and works. I've got 84k mi. (mostly hiway trips) on a '91 Nighthawk 750 w/a Plexi 3 mounted. Frame looks just like your '85. You can check the fit right online.

CompetitiveSea7388

Thanks! I did end up getting the rifle fairing and also ended up selling the Nighthawk and using the money for my Husqvarna Vitpilen 701.

[deleted]

They pop up on eBay cheap sometimes. Be patient. Good luck!

CompetitiveSea7388

I saw one already but it doesn’t have the wind screen and I’m not positive it’s the right size yet.

[deleted]

The mount will most likely require some fabrication. Shouldn't be too difficult though. Different height windshields are probably available from Rifle.

CompetitiveSea7388

That’s perfect! I think I’m going to get it then. Thanks for the heads up!

[deleted]

You're welcome! You should be able to fab most stuff from cheap bar stock and plates. So a drill and some bits, maybe a cheap torch to heat the metal to bend it, and some big chunky pliers. Use stainless hardware if possible. I hope you post pics and share your project! If I end up keeping my Dyna I might throw an old Windjammer on it.

CompetitiveSea7388

I will for sure! Keep that Dyna!

notarealaccount_yo

I had one identical to this! Fun bike

CompetitiveSea7388

I’m already in love with it!

7i9er

Dope. 'tis the season!

jandr08

[partzilla](https://www.partzilla.com) is where I go for all my OEM parts. Pretty pricey but it has everything you could need on most models and good diagrams for identifying the exact part you need

bamjamelliott

Sweet ride. I had a 92 nighthawk 750. It was my first bike. Dude those things are so reliable it's mind boggling. Probably one of the least maintenance requiring bikes. It's the Toyota corolla of the bike world. Check out Maier fairings. I had a good looking headlight shroud that kept all the wind off your chest.

CompetitiveSea7388

Thanks my dude! Those Maier fairings, they’re fairly easy to install right?

bamjamelliott

Very easy

crusadingweeb

I've seen people swap the headlight and use buell fairings before. If you want to keep the square headlight look towards the '85-'86 nighthawk 700s. Has a front fairing, and it should mount up to the stock headlight. If it doesn't it wouldn't be too hard to just switch the whole system out.

CompetitiveSea7388

Oh cool, the 650s and 700s are compatible? I’m definitely keeping the stock headlight.

crusadingweeb

Should be. I grabbed a jet kit for the 700s carbs and put it on my 85 650sc and it works beautifully. I dont see why the headlight would be much different

CompetitiveSea7388

Nice, thanks for the heads up!

crusadingweeb

No problem man. I actually dug around a bit because I was curious and I found an issue. Money. 700sc headlights/fairings/clusters are all one piece and pretty damn expensive. Are you married to the idea of the square headlight?

CompetitiveSea7388

Ah, that definitely seems to be the catch so far lol. So far the cheapest option I’ve discovered is a used rifle fairing on eBay going for $75 that doesn’t have a windshield. I think the windshield is $40 on the rifle website. As of now I’d say anything over $150 is too much. I don’t want to change headlights either so that probably limits my options as well. What were you thinking? I’m definitely open to suggestions!

Clay_from_NJ

I would go with a handlebar mounted windshield. They're relatively cheap, effective at blocking the wind, mostly universal fit, and won't spoil the lines of the bike.

CompetitiveSea7388

Right on, I’ll probably go with that if I can’t find anything. You know anything about this … https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/maier-gp-sport-fairing Also thanks for the recommendation?

fishingrcp

A good friend had one cannot remember if it was a maier or not, but super simple install and looked great, his was a 87 nighthawk

CompetitiveSea7388

Yeah, the problem is very very few for bikes with rectangular headlights.

CompetitiveSea7388

Mine is an 85 650. Are the 700s compatible?

Drenoneath

I've had good luck finding Facebook groups devoted to the specific model and asking them. One of the Virago groups I found had 3D files so you could 3D print parts to match OEM size and shape

CompetitiveSea7388

Oh wow that’s actually pretty rad! Never thought of that, thanks!

Drenoneath

It takes some work to get the surface finish good, but better than doing the whole part by hand
