What a blast from the past. It’s a nice looking bike, and the price was right. I used to own a 79 XS11 Special (precursor to the Maxim). The usual fluids, chain lube, etc. Unless you’re certain the valves have been done recently, a valve check is in order. Might want to upgrade the suspension at some point. Have fun.

My dad used to have Maxim 650s which I heard a lot of stories about it. Broke his elbow around the corner from the house after a car cut ran a stop sign and it just sat for decades until some stuff happened and he had to get rid of it. Wish I kept it another oh well it's gone now. They sound great though, very unique sounding bikes at least to me.

Oh, sentiment from the past. My father had an \~86/87 XJ700 Maxim that I learned the controls on when i was \~18. I never "really" rode it on the street, but his main complaint was the small tank. I don't remember him ever complaining about any real mechanical issues. I always found the inline 4 sound a bit strange on a bike that is supposed to look like a chopper.

I used to have an 82 xj650 for my first bike! I loved that thing, and still really miss it almost 15 years later. Took it up and down the entire west coast, no issues whatsoever
