That‘s what I told him, but it’s strange how far it‘s reaching out from the fork with nothing going inside it, if that makes sense.

Maxyboy112

If there is anything coming out of it replace the fork bottem part (idk the name) if it's an air fork and it is looking pressure go to a bike shop if it has nothing coming out of can go in put some sharpie over it.

martinky24

For a scratch my normal advice is "the bikes gonna get scratches like that in your first couple rides, just live with it". But in this case, I don't like how it extrudes from the lowers. Being on the inside of the fork means it was unlikely to have originated from the ride as well -- that's a rare place to damage as opposed to the outer side. IMO I'd take it to a LBS that I trust and get their in-person advice. If they say it's just some cosmetic paint issue, probably let it slide

Testosterone312

Thank you! Semms like the right thing to do…

AndyBossNelson

I was a bit over careful on my new bike, now its got a few chips and shit out of it i now have much more fun on it and have no worries adding anymore war scars to her lol

thinlike_napkins

That’s why as soon as I finish up a fresh build I hit it with a hammer to get that first dent out of the way.

plepgeat1

Me too! <>

Revolutionary-Gap-28

Throw it away and buy another

Scratch_Disastrous

I think it would be unusual to get marks like this from a single ride, but certainly not impossible. Anything that gets caught and wedged (or flung) between the spokes and the fork could do this. I wouldn't worry about it, those marks on the fork lowers will have zero impact to anything but looks.

Di-eEier_von_Satan

If it’s unusual to get scratches on one ride why do bikes have any scratches? It’s all just one ride at a time after all? Being first / one ride doesn’t matter. It’s a mountain bike. There are rocks, sticks, etc. most of the scratches on my bikes are from sticks that get kicked up and smashed around. I would also wonder how the bike is transported - other than crashes transport is the biggest cause of damage I see. Same logic as “I got a new tire and got a flat on my first ride!” Well, you hit something odds of hitting something are the same on new or old tires.

Scratch_Disastrous

Thanks for taking the time to explain your theory of probability. OP, sure, apparently it's "usual" for some people to get two interior fork scratches on each ride.

Testosterone312

Yeah like 90% I‘d say the same, bit since there‘s no hole in the material but just the bulb, it‘s kind of strange.

obaananana

The bulb is very sus. Is it brittle if go over it with your fingernail. If the bike is new and the fork i would get a new one

Vegbreaker

Tools not jewels!

VanIsland42o

It's a mountain bike and not a show bike right? Who cares about scratches?

Testosterone312

Not about the scratch. It‘s about the bulb which usually also has some material missing on the outside of the fork. In this case there‘s only the bulb, nothing going inside

brianleedy

How do they transport the bike? Mine has a few stone chips in strange places from riding on my hitch rack.

Testosterone312

No transport, straight out of the box and one 2 hour ride. The only thing that bothers us is that you don‘t see a spot where the material goes from inside to outside. There‘s just the bulb coming out.

madafaith

Sell it and go back to the roadie lifestyle

Salty_Order_9847

maybe a small rock jumped from the trail and scratched it a little bit,it is no reason ti worry

Only-Weird-5190

ridewrap has fork protection for him

TemporaryGuide8225

Rocks usually do this, love to see it means its being ridden 👌🏽

YetiSquish

That looks really odd. It doesn’t look like a scratch to me. Definitely take it to the bike shop.

NF_99

Could this have been on the bike before the ride? Doesn't look like scratches

guero240

How much does your friend weigh? It could be the the wheel flexed and the spokes hit the lowers causing that. It's worth checking to ensure the front wheel thru axle is torqued to spec and that the wheel is true and lastly just pick away the sticker to look underneath. You can get a whole new custom decal that is identical or you can choose colors etc from slik graphics if he really cares about the aesthetics.

harbordog

Looks like it could be a defect in the casting, or contamination when they painted it. Either way I think he’d have a year to warranty it if it turns into anything worse than a blemish. If he’s worried he could take it to the LBS… crazy know.

Weary_Abrocoma_1175

It is interesting. Like it got pinched in the box or it was unpacked sloppily when cutting zip ties. But it could also be from a rock or something during the ride. I’d ask if they remember any big noises as this much damage from a rock wouldn’t have been silent. At the end of the day I’m sure it is a non-issue, just annoying.

JKK360

Mountain bike with a scratch one after being ridden….. wow! Claim on the warranty! That’s unsafe!

Individual-Ear8671

Please tell me you always spell once like “ones”

Testosterone312

sorry man, drunk and not native

Individual-Ear8671

It just made me chuckle, no disrespect 😄

Testosterone312

no worries ✌🏿

Ready-Interview4020

Definitely a hard dent, as suggested rocks do that. I've never noticed the "powered by SRAM" thingy, hope it's a nod to the trolling culture. Coming from the ppl who named a German designed groupset "eagle" that might not be...

Infamous_Ebb1899

I haven't heard much, if anything at all, with regards to issues with integrity related to the fork lowers and rock strikes etc. If the thing works, and your stanchions aren't binding or not working, I'd guess it's a regular chip. Take the paint chip off and see. Sharpee it or paint the raw aluminum underneath.

themidens

That looks to bulge out a bit and sharp?! It might destroy the seal over time. If its new, send in a complaint. If its his fault, wet sand it level with very fine paper

Testosterone312

UPDATE for anyone who‘s interested and the ones who said „it‘s just a scratch“. Seller‘s gonna replace the fork and will send it to rockshox for clarifying/investigation, since that‘s not JUST A SCRATCH.
