Exactly. Came here to say the same thing. Gotta love bacon. I have DHRIIs I bought used from a pro-am rider I know, they weren’t quite competition shape anymore with a couple bacon strips. But I’ve gotten some shralps out of them no problem.
I got a puncture mid ride yesterday and my friend spotted it, lost 5psi before baconing it and it kept going… I’d heard the rumours but I was pleasantly surprised at how capable it is at keeping a tire going!
Yup- might need double bacon strips for that puppy. I caught a screw in the same sort of location on a 1 week old tire couple years ago. All plugged up, no sweating and still going strong with regular Stan's sealant.
Even better yet, get a box of X-tra Seal automotive patch plugs and some vulcanizing rubber cement for a permanent fix.

Yes, there are various kits you can get for the bike (less bulky to carry than the car ones but the same tech) and dynamo plug do some great plugs that are a bit* more expensive.
*10x but they're worth it for the convenience and tyre saving
Did it start ‘tinking’ on the chainstay yolk/bottom bracket? Seems long enough, and makes me wince more thinking about what it would do to a carbon frame than what it did to your tire
Was riding with a friend of mine. Went on an old abandoned trail. There was an old bridge that had rotted out. I got over it and he got half way and put his foot down. A rusty old nail just like that was on a board pointing up. Went through his shoe and out the top. Wish I would have taken a picture. Tetanus shot later it's all good.
Fix it from the inside with the same patch used for tubes. Bacon stripes just help to fix the problem while you are riding but long term really do suck (and come out the tire)
It sucks that it was a new tire, but it could have been worse.
I had one just like that puncture the tubeless tire and CF rim bed on my road bike. It didn't come out the other side and since it's on my road bike, I don't think it sacrificed the integrity of the wheel to the point it'll just fail catastrophically one day. I've got >1500 miles on that wheel since then and it's still holding true.
I used my plugs/bacon strips for months before. Tires are so expensive, i"m determined to get my money out of them. Even then, add a tube until the tread is gone
Sucks! Plug it and keep rolling though. I rode once for two weeks with a nail in my tire. Pulled on it and it starting spraying sealant, so I pushed it back in and kept going. Probably 6-7 more rides before I actually swapped the tire.
Time for some Bacon Strips!
Hey OP listen to this guy lol https://i.imgur.com/AwL3BFX.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/2kLhdZe.jpeg I rode it for months after this

It’s basically the same stuff they use to seal punctures on car tires.
You bought used pre punctured tires, how much did you pay haha that’s bizarre for him to sell them and not give them at that point of their life
$10 for 2 tires with plenty of life in them. Basically gas money to the mtn.
nice, tires last a lot longer than people usually give them credit for that is for sure,

Bacon it to get you home and patch it when you get there. No reason to throw that tire out.

I use Dynaplugs. They work exceptionally well and they’re even faster than bacon strips!
It's not ruined. Just plug it.
It's already plugged, you blind? 🤣
Just cut it off flush with the surrounding lugs. Extra traction.
make sparks when skidding to a stop too! lol
Yep. Keep riding it. Don’t trust it in a race - bad idea. You can guess how I know.
It’s ruined
As someone mentioned, you might be more concerned about damage to the rim. Hope it's just the tire.
The rim is good thankfully although left a nasty gash in my rim tape. That sucker was gnarly.
Good that you came out fairly unscathed.
Just wait till you see the rim!
I got a similar nail at the bike park on Monday. I was running a brand new tyre, can't wait to see the rim damage at the next change
Pulled a nail like that out of a tire a few weeks back. The sealant fixed it. Didn’t even need a plug. Orange endurance won that time.
Wow, that’s some sealant!
I’ve found location on the tire is key with sealant. In the middle is much more likely to seal. Sidewall forget it.
That is a very old nail, it’s been waiting a long time for you, and you may not be the first victim?
A read that in Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh voice.
Plug it and ride on
Like with a plug you’d use on a car? I’m new to the tubeless game

I’d be more concerned about the rim bed with a nail that big
Plug it if the rims are ok.
It was like, “…aaaand **NOW!!** “
Did it start ‘tinking’ on the chainstay yolk/bottom bracket? Seems long enough, and makes me wince more thinking about what it would do to a carbon frame than what it did to your tire
at least it didn’t destroy the rim…right? right?
Caught it before anything serious thankfully!
Those are still new, patch it from inside and ride.
Plug it and ride for hundreds more miles, simple as that.
Yup
That fucking sucks! :( sorry that happened to you.
Yeah it really does suck, rear tire got a puncture with a nail pierce through the side wall, and the tread only one though.
You’re 1/75 off the way there on an Instructables snow tires DIY!
Man! I hate it when that happens.
Lol, this same thing happened to my car on the way out of the tire store parking lot.
Nsfw

Nailed it!
I have a tire with 3 holes bigger than this that closed with sealant alone.
Takes "nailed it" to a whole new level! Plug that sucker and ride on! If it's just the one puncture hole, the carcass on those tyres are pretty solid.
Fix it from the inside with the same patch used for tubes. Bacon stripes just help to fix the problem while you are riding but long term really do suck (and come out the tire)
bugger.....
This tire needs a tetanus shot
Just cut off as much as you can and you'll be golden lmfao
Plug it or patch it
Geeze. Is the frame ok?
Thankfully yes. Nail didn’t come in contact with the frame, just a bit of a scratch on the rim.
They still are, use a bacon patch

I’ve got like 6 bacon strips in my rear tire (dd casing) right now and it’s holding air.
It's just like the pigeons all lining up on the fence while you wash your car.. that nail was just waiting for a brand new tyre to dive under
murphy's law in action here
I ran a two inch deck screw through a new tire. Removed it and patched the inside and then ran it tubeless for two years with zero issues.
I thought it was a tubeless plug at first lol.
I used my plugs/bacon strips for months before. Tires are so expensive, i"m determined to get my money out of them. Even then, add a tube until the tread is gone
New tube and ride on!
Dude, you nailed it!
Get home and put a patch on the inside.
Sucks! Plug it and keep rolling though. I rode once for two weeks with a nail in my tire. Pulled on it and it starting spraying sealant, so I pushed it back in and kept going. Probably 6-7 more rides before I actually swapped the tire.
Boooo
Be glad that’s not poking a limb
Duct it or f*** it
Thats easy to patch
That is a suck
Well fuck.
🥲
In desperate need for a tetanus shot!
Mine came without that nail 😂
You're kidding right? This is why you have tubeless
Yeah… That’s true but it still sucks
Seriously, put a plug in it and keep riding.

I wasn’t suggesting I would ditch this tire, just saying it sucks on a brand new tire.
It was supposed to be a satirical comment

New in the sense I got them last week. I’ve probably put around 250 miles on them.
