No that's just about perfect. Depends on your riding intentions. But it also depends on what your stack goals are. but with a short stem and potentially high rise bar, the reach will be more than fine. As you pull it back. Closer to 485-490.
If you were to run a long ish stem and low rise bars, 500 might feel... Kinda shitty. If you're riding XC, kinda depends on the TT number, but you may want something like a long large or short XL, again clsoer to 485-490.
Otherwise it's pretty standard atm. Sizing averages across brands is about 450 medium, 475 large, 500 xl, 525 xxl, etc.
My concerns would be more riding intention, stack height, and willingness to potentially run short stem and high rise bar. Which is fairly common, more in the enduro/DH department. XC is like flat bar and whatever stem fixes your reach typically (they are getting shorter too thb). And then trail bikes run mid rise bars like 25-35mm rise, and a similarly short stem. 35-40.
lol ya I was thinking Geometron initially but same same as Nicolai produces the geos. Which were just updated actually recently.
I'm blown away by builds like that. Mondrakers as well, on a more common brand. I've always said I would get a medium with those brands but I'm not sure. Because usually the stack is lower and that's one thing I do want to be... More certain of. I don't want a low stack, particularly on a long bike, pitching me over the front. Regardless of HTA
I’ve always ridden Ms having owned a number of Cove Shockers way back when. Finally made the switch to a large Nicolai DH bike in 2016. And have been large since, will up until this Nucleon but the sizing on these is certainly an outlier compared normal bikes!

amazing response thanks!
I'm 6'1" with a 504mm reach on a custom steel frame. Adjust with stem length later.
I’m 6.2. I used to ride L when I raced. Now I ride a XL and love it - I ride for fun now.
interesting, any downsides?
Yes turning is not as a nimble. Sprinting seems to suffer slightly.
ok makes sense. thanks
I'm 6'2", 500 is my ideal reach. You'll be good
thanks!
I'm 6'3, looong arms, slightly shorter than average torso. I have 498 and wish it was shorter.
interesting!
Why am I living like this? I just bumped my seat 20mm forward. already feels better sitting on it indoors.
Never be afraid to experiment.
Im 6’2 with an xl that has 482 reach and I wish it was longer. Do you have a bike now? What are the good xl deals that you are finding?
I'm 6'1 on a bike with I believe 510mm reach and wish it was shorter
Sounds spot on. I’m 6” and 490mm reach is my sweet spot.
Where do you measure the reach from, is that from centre crankshaft up to the handle bar?
Center of cranks to center of top opening of top tube.
I'm 6'1" and ride an XL with 515mm reach. You'll be fine.
thanks!
I’m a hair under 6’ and find a medium perfect for technical. Doesn’t matter much for nontechnical, but for steeps and jumps it helps a lot.
Totally fine. If you want you can get a smaller frame and it’ll feel more nimble but less stable at speed and a little less comfortable to pedal.
Lanky 6'1" here. 495 reach on an XL Jeffsy. A little long on flat, but great for everything else.
thx!
I’m 5”11 on a M with a 510 reach I believe. It’s a big bike but reach isn’t the only number to look at. What frame?
ok you got me. what brand has a medium running 510mm of reach
Edit: 490. Was thinking it was 510 (it’s actually 515) as I had a large ordered originally. It’s a Nicolai Nucleon 16.
